Leaving Android... Any thought what logical choice is?

Hey Guys im done with Android, i found it very disapointing. The applications and devs just arent there. And if they are some games etc apps are meant for a specific resolution...ie: gameloft games!
Im on verizon and left ATT because of to many dropped calls. But I loved the Iphone...do i wait for iphone on verizon or go windows mobile phone 7.
Android was awesome for what it was... but there was nothing of value in the market. Atleast for me.
If there was no apps in the Android market for you then you will be really disappointed in the WP7 market. It sounds to me like you need to wait for the Verizon iPhone.
I was thinking the same thing blazingwolf.... but i wanted something different. But i guess different isnt always best for some people.
PLus I know wp7 is coming in january for verizon, but if i wait for iphone God knows when its coming to verizon.
I guess im stuck in a waiting game. Thanks!!!!
go with the iPhone, it'll satisfy you more than anything else.
I currently have an N900 running Android, Maemo and Meego. I also have an iPod Touch 4th Gen, and to be honest I use my iPod Touch more than anything else. All the apps/games i play on the go are all on my iPod Touch, i barely use my N900 other than txt or make phone calls.
I had a HTC Touch PRO and wasted so much time with installing custom ROMS and all these other stuff (I was using Energy ROM and always up to date until a few months ago where I sold my Touch Pro) and to be honest, it's just not as fun as owning an iDevice. That's my personal opinion and preference anyway.
I'm not an Apple fanboy either, I will never go for the iPhone coz it's way to expensive and I only go for phones with a qwerty keyboard. But my point is, judging from what you're looking for I say the iPhone is definitely the best choice.
Windows Phone 7 seems promising and I've been following and keep up to date with it since it was announced, I know all about the latest phones running Windows Phone 7. But I don't think it'll do well. Ur better off with the iPhone since u can just get everything straight from the go, not to mention you can jailbreak it (which is ridiculously easy btw) and install even more tweaks and stuff on it, and "FREE" apps and games (if you know what i'm talking about *wink*).
For Android, it's the same *wink* *wink* but the contents aren't as fresh and popular as what the AppStore and the jailbreaking scene or Cydia offers. Trust me, u'll have TONS of fun with so many apps/games for the iPhone. I have like 30GB+ worth lol.
But at least u have an Android phone. I'm sick of my N900 already and wanna get a Desire Z....
Yeah guys thanks for the input, im gonna wait for the iphone. Its my best bet. Thanks again for the opinions!!!
What i learned is a OS is only as good as the applications!!

well that's the thing, iOS itself wouldn't be good if it weren't for the APP Store and 300,000+ developers backing it up. Let alone the jailbreaking scene, there're tons of *special forums* *wink* if you know what i'm talking about. There're literally hundreds of repos out there, u can find anything u want so easily.
I think one of the strong points about the iDevices is that they all use the same firmware. There're no custom firmwares or anything so everyone focus their development and support etc on the same thing. Not like Windows Mobile or Android where we have tons of stuff everywhere for different devices, and then there're sub-sections for custom firmwares specific for those devices and so on........I'm not saying that's bad but to newcomers that just started with all this, it's a bit of a cluster-fuk and confusing to find what you need.
I have used many OS platforms and almost all the top brands out there, and I can definitely tell u that iOS is the most straightforward and simplest to use from experience.
well dude wherever you go be sure to send a postcard about how much you miss is back here rofl

Thoughts on Android.....

As CES nears i began to thing about what phone will i upgrade to. I am using a Droid Eris with 2.2 right now and its becoming out of date. So like many of you I have been to look at upgrades and what I want to get. Then I thought.....do you have to root your android to enjoy it? I know you can wait for new software, but it seems that the hardware is moving aso quick that your phone will be "out of date" within a few months if you don't root it. EOL for the Eris was Mayish of 2010....not a long life for a phone that was released in November of 09. So I have looked elsewhere. I am looking for Verizon to show a WP7 device at CES and the iPhone to follow after that. What are you thoughts? Do you need to root your phone to enjoy it? Do you feel that Android is the "rebel" of the Smartphone world?

The myTouch 4G from T-Mobile is an awesome phone. 768MB of RAM, 1Ghz. processor. It's very fast and responsive. You would not be disappointed.
Oh and let me say I am on Verizon and not looking to leave the Big Red V.

Sorry. I can't stand V. I left them years ago and never looked back. Good luck.

i had a Nexus One and EVO prior to getting my DroidX. which is very unfriendly towards custom roms and other hacking fun.
needless to say i miss the Nexus and EVO immensely, half the fun for me was flashing custom roms and tinkering with stuff.
I agree it is fun messing with the Eris, but then i thought, what if my next phone I don't want to hassle with flashing roms, fixing things, and what not. Also My biggest issue with the software is not the software at all, its the app developers. It seems like it is 100% iOS4 first, Android second. I also like the intergration of Xbox Life with WP7.
My thought is this. You must root your phone if your a phone junky. Other wise we would all get bored quickly. There isn't enough high quality apps to keep me from rooting and changing things on the phone. Also I feel like I need to change phones at least once a year or I'm not happy lol.

See that is my issue, i am not sure if I want to root my next phone. I like it, but sometimes it sucks. I am a phone once a year kinda guy. I might check out the WP7 when they come out on the the V......

I came from the Hero. I'm on a vibrant now, and loving it. There is a app on Android for adding removing and messaging Xbox live friends. Pretty much the same thing on WP7, minus the points you earn playing games.
I had no reason to root my phone but I couldn't resist the urge.
Now now. There is no reason to do something that drastic. Stay with Android. Lol

What's your beef with rooting? It's not like it's a difficult process, and it opens up so many options for you. It honestly doesn't make any sense to me to not root.

No beef with rooting at all, but that is my point, do you have to root to enjoy your android? I know it ipens options but the developers from the big apps are slow to the android game.....
I don't think you have to root to enjoy a device, but for me, it allows me to enjoy it more. Why wouldn't you root? I like trying out different ROMs and tinkering with stuff and overclocking. Apps are fine, but those are only part of the fun for me.

That's my point i guess. I'm an app guy, i like apps, want the latest apps, and U just don't feel i can get that with Android.
The Xbox Live integration looks really nice so again when the verizon WP7 comes out I may look at it.
Something that has bothered me is the fragmentation of the Android OS. There are some devices, that are not that old running 1.5 and 1.6, some on 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3.....you get my drift.

How does the fragmentation bother you if you're rooted? Any device with a decent community will have the latest OS.

I agree but it seems that the Android devices are so spread out that it gives the developers hell. For example look at Angry Birds. They are developing 2 versions for "one" OS.
(Wall of text approaches)
About Rooting:
I don't have to be rooted but I definitely enjoy the phone more because I am. I don't have to pay additional tethering fees to my carrier because rooting allows me to do this for free. I don't have to wait for carriers to send an OTA of the next version of Android because my rooted phone allows me to upload ROMs made by the awesome devs we have here at XDA.
About Apps:
Android's marketshare is rising exponentially. I am definitely seeing more application development for the platform and a lot of popular iPhone apps being ported over as well. I admit that Android's Marketplace isn't as intuitive as the App Store but it is getting better. I recommend checking out Appbrain if you want a better market experience on Android.
About Fragmentation:
Its openness is a double-edged sword in my opinion. Openness allows a multitude of different products to be running your OS but it also causes fragmentation because of all the skins manufactures choose to run on top of it. Take a look at the Motorola Droid, it runs Stock Android and it received Eclair and Froyo relatively fast because of it. Now take the Galaxy S series running a Touchwiz version of Android, all of these devices were released this year and have none have received Froyo when the Motorola Droid was released last year and does have Froyo. 95% of typical android users probably don't know what version of Android they are running anyway so it could be that manufactures aren't putting it as high priority because their customers don't care. 2.2 to 2.3 isn't a very big leap outside of aesthetics.
Good post. I only started this thread to get some good conversation.. I am not against rooting, against Android, against iOS, or WP7. I just like to keep my options open.
^ we understand.
The fragmentation argument is nonsense. Any good developer will tell you its no different than developing for a PC. With a PC you have a infinite amount of hardware combinations same as Android.

We've produced a large number of "why I love my Xoom" threads...well it's really great. I can do so much with it and it's always with me. My family's actually jealous of my relationship with it, lol.
There's a great community of developers and enthusiasts and everyone tries to help each other root and mod and test new stuff. The Xoom's great as a stock pure Google Experience tab, but it really shines when it's rooted and running custom roms/kernels. It's also built like a tank and is really hard to brick. So yeah, I think it would be a good trade.

How to bring life back to a Transformer thats become dull?

One of Androids larger problems, and I know this is something Google say they have improved in ICS, it just isn't an entertaining OS to use day to day.. Don't get me wrong I love my Transformer but actually interacting with it has become a bit meh. Since installing Miui, CM or even a hacked port of Sense isn't on the cards does anyone have any suggestions on how to breath new life into the tablet?
Thanks.
Well when I.C.S arrives, you will be able to use custom Roms firstly in the form of CM9.
http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...t/10226-cyanogenmod-9-coming-transformer.html
This will pave the way for MIUI, and beyond.
The life of the Transformer is only just beginning.
Regards
Entertaining! What do you want it to do? A little dance for you? Its an OS not a TV show!

No need to be so harsh. I'm sure we all think this at certain moments
Get involved more in Android. Maybe take up java as a hobby and create your own apps, or make your own themes. You can also try setting up and designing different layouts (like Hubs). Every OS gets boring if you just use it on a basic level. Start customizing it and it will get a whole lot better. And like buzzboy said, once we get a ICS port (hopefully someone is working on this already) and CM9, we will have a lot more customization. Unless every hops on the Prime wagon, which I hope doesn't happen until I pick it up
I try to change my phone and tablet's layout almost every week just to always have a refreshed experience.
My apologies if the OP finds that harsh as well, didn't really mean it that way. But I've gotta admit, give or take the headaches it'd keep a TF from being dull for a long time lol.

Sell it and get an iPad.

into the world.. try going back to 286 tech and see how bored you would be..
jezzz.. flash a rom one of the great roms that the developers have got for you..
then tweck it like it hasnt never been tweaked then come back and show us your startling results..
even better.. work on multi tasking for android then bring it to the masses..
this will save you from boredom ..
or going off topic.. you could try this way..
lol.. its a bit like the way i treat my women..
once i get bored.. trade them in..

Uhm, well, I don't know what you expected. A Playstation/XBox? A desktop replacement that lasts a lot of hours?
An Android tablet is, at least to me, more of a time saver and productivity improver than a time filler. I use it to check news/mails/feeds/.. write some articles, create office elements and, in my spare time, I do play aswell some games. But thats the rare case.
So, if you don't have anything to do with yours, I'd recommend selling it and investing into something that fits you.

For my two cents: I find that Android tablets should be utilized and marketed for what netbooks were marketed for, hence the net; but in reality a netbook is just a budget laptop in a form factor that used to cost *a lot* more than a normal laptop. The difference is you're trading a PC optimized OS for a Mobile Phone optimized one.

This is what happens when you buy a tablet as a toy. Plenty of people seem to get off on installing programs and customizing their computers and other tech gadgets --almost like how lots of people work endlessly on their cars but don't actually give a crap about driving them.
I prefer to drive...and to use my gadgets as tools.
dont think its the tablet thats dull, more the content on the tablet. look for some new games and apps to play with.
or go out!
Oh I didn't buy it as a toy its my companion device and a damn good one at that. All I meant was that in its current state the UI isn't as gratifying to use over time as say Sense UI Miui or dare I say the ill fated webOS products.
And ladies and gents is it really necessary to throw around insults because I criticised the UI on a product I own and quite like? I am not criticising you or your choice of purchase by saying the Transformer is less than perfect. Lets act like adults here shall we?
Putting that way..then i agree with the OP..
Different framing of the topic might have been in order..
As said in another thread..I am only missing multitasking in that windows or tabs..
An example if a perfect day with my Tranny..
6.45am wakeup check emails transfer the movies, shows and books for trip
12pm 1st plane..movie
Stopover..check emails..have a chat with family via Skype..
2.30pm 2nd plane.. movie..bit if a read of a Pdf..
5.30- hotpot dinner with staff.. a bit of a flick thru of customer case studies setup as frames.. wow factor
9pm.. back to hotel..plug in hdmi watch a bit Hawaii5o..
11pm finish..
A big day with me and my tranny travelling for work around China..

[Q] Why isn't this phone getting any development?

Buyer of the blaze here, after i turned in my Amaze 4g due to battery problems (even with a custom rom, it was literally dead after 5pm, with nothing but heavy talking and minor web use), i honestly love this phone. It's snappier, has an AMAZING battery for a smartphone, and basically easier to hold in my hand.
The question i do have, though, is why isn't this phone getting any development compared to similar phones like the S2 and the blaze? like the others, its pretty futureproof, and as fast, if not faster than them. Does it have a locked bootloader? Did samsung do something to make it hard to root? Does the recovery not work? seriously whats up with this lack of dev support?
Basically i just want an ICS rom to remove the damn bloatware and make the battery last even longer. I know samsung is coming out with ICS, but knowing their track record, it could take months before we get it, and even worse, contain the same bloat as it has now.
tl;dr why are there no roms or devs working on this phone?
No Samsung phone comes with a locked bootloader, and root has already been achieved. This phone is considered mid range even though it's a baby sgs2 that's why I think most devs aren't knocking at our door because there are higher end phones out now and in a couple weeks. We should be seeing ports or something. The phone is relatively still new as well.

Here's a thought, maybe because they aren't paid to?
I gotta say, the android community clashing with the traditional linux OSS community is an interesting thing to watch. In the linux world you wouldn't see so much sense of entitlement as you see with android devices. I guess that's because with a linux install, the community is still more full of tech minded people than it is of novices. With android, it's been thrust into the hands of the unsuspecting consumers.
The sad fact is that this is a being treated like a middle-of-the-road phone. Devs do like their sexy and sadly this device isn't as sexy as a SGS2 or the upcoming SGS3. Therefore interest is low. With the multitude of phones growing at such a rapid pace, there isn't enough talent out there to cover them all. If you want rom development, you gotta go for the phones the developers will want. And you also shouldn't buy something that has just come out.
From a tech side, even though this seems to have the specs of an SGS2, it seems internally to be wildly different from an SGS2. It is named in the SGS family and it'd not similar to anything there either. It's all ext4 (fairly different).
I've been working on this phone in my spare time trying to get a build that would run. I am not a programmer but thought that my skills were enough to hobble together a working CM7 device profile. I thought I could look at similar devices and come up with a working hybrid of other devices. Here's the thing.... there don't really seem to be any (or many) other msm8660 in the official repos. It's hard to find other devices that are similar to this one.
With ICS coming out for this phone at some point, I'm not even sure I want to spend that much time focusing on CM7 anymore since presumably we'll be able to get native drivers for the cameras at that point.
If you want to help, then offer to take up a collection to commission a dev's time or send someone a phone. It's difficult to do this process from a distance. I spent money on my own hardware and I'm deathly afraid of damaging my flash memory with constant flashes and what not.
dr4stic giving you a thanks just wasnt enough
dont forget man your always welcome in teh irc channel, may not know a whole lot but whatever i do know i happily share
oh and official no, but for the msm8660 you might wanna look here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1230
the evo 3d has that cpu and is gsm as well
lol
Yeah, I imagine that first line in my post is what did it too ;-)
Thanks so much dude for all you've done. I know I'm welcome. It's just that after my day job (and some of my night job), the last thing I wanna do is look at a computer. And I got told this week I've got a 90 day deadline to complete 2-3 of the biggest projects and migrations I've ever had to do for my work.
As for the evo 3d, I actually did look at it, as well as the skyrocket. There are just too many quirks. Plus I believe the msm8660 handles part of the camera interface and the Evo 3D has a very funky implementation in that space. It ended up just looking more confusing to me than helpful :-(
From the way things are looking, I'm REALLY starting to look forward more to doing this for ICS. I get the sense that I might have an easier time there. I do, however, plan to keep moving forward ;-)
