my One X just went through the wash...... - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Ok, so my wife just sent my new One X through the washing machine, and I think I'm completely [email protected]#ked. From past experience, they don't usually recover fully, and the first thing you're supposed to do is remove the battery.....good trick with this phone.
So, she's now buying me a new one, but my question is, any ideas what a water damaged One X, in very good condition is worth these days?? I tired ebay, nothing listing for damaged ones yet, but past I have seen damaged SGS2's selling on ebay before. I'm just wondering if it's worth the bother, or just send it to be recycled?
Not very happy right now, I'll tell you that :crying:
Funny, this is the second smart phone of mine that's gone through the wash, first one was my fault, but I just went out a bought the identical model, so I wouldn't have to tell her

Damn, that's no good, take it apart, have a look

you could probably salvage some parts like the digitizer if thats not broken or something. im sure you could sell or use the digitizer in the future

Put it in a bowl of white rice immediately. That trick has revived multiple phones for me, my original iPh... went swimming in byron bay, a swimming pool, the rain, and a mai tai and all 4 times the rice brought it back.
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app

Yes I agree with the white rice. Also, never try to turn the phone on after it drops in water. Put it quickly in the rice.

I think hox doesn't hav removable battery
Copied signature

it doesnt, but you can take it apart and disconnect it. and yes bag of rice, more rice the better. if your anal about reviving it you could disassemble it in pieces, put in rice for 2 days, then soak it in 99% alcohol then air dry, and put back in rice for 2 more days.
the first 2 days will draw most of the water out, the alcohol will then clean most of the corrosion if any, and draw away more water, then the final 2 days will completely dry it. so long as nothing fried...itll work.

- Use a tab of some sort (plastic, not metal) and pop off the body (its held in place w tabs along the sides
- lift the bottom, and slide it out of the top end.
- disconnect the battery lead (since it's now accessible)
- put a section of paper towel down on half the bowl of rice.
- place the digitizer/circutry portion of the phone on the piece of paper towel on the rice
- add another layer of paper towel on top
- cover with rice.
the back cover (that contains the speaker and mic section) can be dried manually and out in the air.
after a day, pull the digitizer/circutry out of the rice/paper-towel-sandwhich and press the copper power button at the top after reconnecting the battery lead.
It should power up now (if it didnt blow any resistors while in the wash)

That's a divorcable offence.

How was it her fault? Was it in her pocket or yours? Certainly she didn't think it was dirty and threw it in with the other whites.... If so the yeah, her fault lol.

Sorry for OPs phone. But this picture looks too familiar. I broke my arias screen twice & replaced it twice.lol. That phone was pretty easy 2 fix. I dont know if the One X is as easy though, but I guess that problem is not about screen. The only problem I have with fixing screens is that the screen never wants to stay down tight. Over time it pushes back up.

Just dropped my skyrocket in the toilet...

Yea, pretty self explanatory. Clean toilet thank god. I saw it drop in slow motion and it was probably in there less than a second. I yanked it out, pulled off the back cover and yanked the battery immediately. Then removed the SIM and sd card. The water damage indicator on the battery wasn't activated which is a good sign. I wiped it up with a paper towel and cleaned out the usb port and headphone jack. Like an idiot, I powered it up about an hour later and it worked fine. Called my dad, and messed around with it. Car navigation kept popping up which was weird and the soft keys at the bottom stopped working. Bad idea on my part, so powered it down and left it in front of a fan for about 2 hours. Powered it back on and the buttons work, and it seemed fine, but now it is apart in a bag of rice. Hope I didn't F it up by powering it up too early.
Yes, that was way too early to be safe, but it seems it should work fine.
I once dropped a Motorola StarTac flip phone into a bucket full of car shampoo. Didn't notice right away (it fell together with a bunch of stuff). The last item I picked up from the bottom was the phone. I removed the battery and left it basking in the sun for 48h without the battery.
Worked fine for 2 more years.
Good thing it was a clean toilet. cuz whooo.... imagine if you had a explosive diahrrea just before... oh man... that's a big mess.. you'd be drying that thing for ages until galaxy s4 comes out.
Was wondering, can't we just use microwave to make things more subtle.

****ty
seriously though, to thoroughly get all the water out, you need to do one of 2 things:
remove back cover and battery, stick it in a bag of rice over night
or
soak it in rubbing alcohol (as pure as you can find, i use 90-92% for everything) for a half hour, then let it dry
I have access to pure isopropanol but I'm skeptical

Get some rice so it can extract all the moisture out of the phone. Guy Kawasaki washed his GNexus in his washer and it still survived.

$H** happens! No pun intended being he dropped it in the toilet.

My scary story for the day

So this morning my phone happened to be sitting on a toilet paper dispenser. As I was walking out of the stall the scariest possible thing happened. My phone dropped off, and plop... landed right in the toilet, as if that wasn't bad enough it was full so I had to flush it to get to the phone. So I couldn't just pull it right out, it had to sit there as I flushed 2 or 3 times.
So after I managed to fish it out, I immediately removed the battery, sim card, and SD card and took it back to my room. I then stuck it in a large cup full of rice. I figured I should be ok since the contacts on the battery were dry, and the sticker on the top of the battery is still white. 6 hours later, I poured out the rice and booted up the phone, and now I've decided someone upstairs loves me.
All phone functions were still working, including music and ringtones from the internal speaker. I am vastly impressed, and must say, thank you Samsung for making your hardware right!
im speechless lmfao
Wow! That's a ****ty thing to happen to someone lol.. I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself. I'm glad your phone still works.

You should rename the title of the thread 'My ****ty Story For The Day'
As a short time ex cellphone technician I can state only 1 thing. Water damages sneak up on you.. your phone could be working fine now then a week or 2 weeks down the road random reboots.. phone starts glitching up and starts opening up random apparel by it self. I had many and many encounters with water damaged hardware!... u can't see rust unless u remove everything to the last screw... and even then the memory disk could rust down the road... u did a smart thing with rice.. its one of the best things... another is partially cleaning the phone with wd40 very neatly and then partially soaking it with rubbing alcohol something that's more of 91% or at least 70%... but I hope ur phone continues to operate without a flaw.

This morning trying to return a text while taking a whizz, I dropped mine in the toilet of pee. For a millisecond I was like no way in hell am I sticking my hand in piss but I did and wiped it down and took it apart and washed the battery cover. I then wiped it down with alcohol. I just let it sit in a room with a fan going all day and then in rice for an hour after my mom suggested it. It's actually still working so far (I haven't tested speakers) but the battery sticker is red.

[Q] Has anyone replaced a digitizer for g2x??

Any tips would be appreciated.
Maybe links to somewhere i can get the parts for cheap or a repair service.. thanks
You can get a cheap digitizer at Amazon.com, and there are a few videos on YouTube that'll teach how to replace it.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I got mine from RepairsUniverse.com. It was 67$ with shipping. Order their double sided tape, too. When you get it, disassemble according to their YouTube video. To remove the glass, use a hair dryer to heat the glass, and nudge it out with the plastic tool they provide. If you go slow and don't rush it, the whole process will take about an hour the first time. Clean the frame well, and place the tape on it. You'll have to cut the piece provided, so don't worry if it doesn't line up exactly. Press the glass down on the tape and reassemble the phone. BOOM.
Also: if you want to do something REALLY cool, search for the white digitizer and battery cover. The all white G2X looks awesome, and you can get the whole kit for like 80 bucks USD.
I never needed to use a hair dryer. It's fairly weak adhesive that keeps the screen on to the glass.
Look up the YouTube video. I actual commented on there about my experience replacing it. Same user name but with an x at the end (buru898x).
Oh and you also don't need to "re-tape" the screen either. The screen is locked in securely with or without glue/tape.
Actually I'm going to replace my aunts g2x this Saturday when she comes over. I got the digitizer plus the alluminim bezel (idk if it is aluminium or not) for 60 and I got it 3 days. I use Amazon

This auction had the housing as well so all I did was replace it completely. Simple.

Really, it happened while the screen was facing in against your body? That's bizarre. I learned the same lesson, luckily on my old Samusng Blackjack, and it only cracked the screen cover, not the screen itself--I leaned against a table corner and heard the "pop" when it happened.
I also find it weird that it cracked while the screen was against your leg...If it was facing outwards then I could understand. I dented the side of my Macbook Pro by accidentally hitting it against a railing while it was in a padded carry bag. You'd be surprised at how much force you exert even with just a tap.
Though, I guess hitting the back of the case really hard may crack the screen. My friend had one of those indestructable Nokia flip phones and it took a shot from a competition air rifle (.1775) at 10m to crack the screen...and we shot the outer casing (which only left a dent)
I think I bumped into a table and it "bent" the phone enough to crack the glass?? I don't know............anyways, I'll get a new one soon (I hope).......

It may have broke from just your pants pocket. Normally, when you stick the phone in your pocket it will be in portrait mode, but occasionally it will fall into landscape. When this happens and you sit down your pants pocket will push the phone against your leg very tightly and bend it, possibly to the breaking point if you don't notice it right away and shift your weight right. Try it.
Of course, this largely depends on the type of clothing you wear... It should be noted that this can happen with any phone. I've never had it happen but I've come close to it with my HTC Aria.

Lol the aria is tiny. Get an otterbox on it and it will never change orientation in a pants pocket unless you're a hipster wearing trip pants with giant pockets.

I thought hipsters wore skinny jeans...
But anyway, yeah, the aria is super tiny. It's the exact same size as the visible portion as this screen.

well Grey is available now on Amazon so I switched and will get that to replace my white one..........ordered a case too......... Now i'll have to wait to root (damn, since this phone is rooted and good to go)
I wonder if that video on YouTube where this guy hammers a nail into a board using a One X is real or some form of trick movie magic.

first to break one!

so heres the story. it was on my kitchen table. my cat jumped up on the kitten table. the phone fell OFF the kitchen table. it landed on my wood flooring, and BAYYM. shattered like a christmas orniment. i can say the screen is fragile.. very different from my Galaxy S phones, which have been dropped numerous times, landed on concrete, and have dropped inside of a machine at work (lol). guess this is why samsung desides to make those "cheap feeling" light weight builds..
sigh. already ordered a replacement screen here

It also depends on where the phone fell, screen first w.e , and and the energy when it hit the ground. The must have been hard.

Ouch.
Yeah man that sucks. I dropped my Vivid the exact same way except it was outside on concrete. I am assuming you didn't have a screen protector on? Some screen protectors are said to spread the impact and protect it better.
Is it easy to install the replacement screen?
Also $45 isn't bad at all. My wife recently did the same thing to her Samsung Infuse and it cost $150.

I really wouldn't say "fragile" as much as I would say it just happened to land in a manner that would cause it to break.

wow at 45 bucks i might as well never use another screen protector again.
thats real cheap for a new screen
Correction, you are the SECOND person to break one. I beat you to it when I had it in my pocket when I went to the pool Sunday. It didn't enjoy swimming as much as I did.
bad kitty....
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think the LCD and the glass are fused together...

I believe the cover glass and LCD are laminated together, so you won't be able to separate them...

You weren't the first to break one...HTC was the first to break it when they released it.
This is relevant to my future interests. Did you successfully replace the screen? Is it true that the screen is laminated/glued to the LCD? How did you pry it apart? Can you post instructions on how you did it after the deed is complete?
Keep us in the loop!
Mine fell off fbe olyptical this morning. Bounced ariund. Cracked the blue HTC plastic case. Nothing physical to the phone at all. A faint rattle inside the phone that may have been there before. You can only here faintly when shaking.

If the rattle is around the camera area, don't worry about it, there's somewhere in a thread in here talking about it and if I remember correctly it has to do with the camera and is present in all of the devices.

Does it sound like its near the camera lens? Mine does it and its never been dropped.
It does appear to be by the camera. That makes me feel better!
Either way I still decided to add the best buy protection plan in case it were to happen again.
