Recovery version, looking for input. - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been using CWM..... I think 5.1,and I used it pretty exclusively for a long time. Though I can and am willing to manually do my flashing and backups and such, but with the JB file changes I don't get to be lazy anymore. I was wondering if you guys would be willing to give opinions on your choices for recovery images.
CWM is easy to use and has everything in logical places.
Rogue touch is on my xoom now and I was introduced to it in the great eos radio upgrade of 95 ICS.
There is one now that goomanager wants to put on that I am not sure I am using correctly because I can't seem to... Well, let's just say I got tired of playing with it. I am thinking rogue and this new one I can't remember the name of might be the wave of the future being touch and all.
Anyway, give your 2 cents if you don't mind.

That's the one that Goomanager wants to install, just couldnt' remember the name at the time. I'm not sure I am using it correctly because I can't seem to browse where ever I want throughout both the SD cards (int/ext). I'm thinking that I might just save my targets for downloads and copy stuff to where I can get to on that recover version and I may give it another try.

[RECOVERY] ClockWorkMod Recovery [Updated 7/22/12 - New Info]

EDIT: Koush is working hard on compiling CWM6 for all the newer devices. He already has a working version for the international S3 up so we should be looking at getting it here shortly. Notable differences, 720p support. Once it is official for us I will post it. If it is fully functional I will remove everything except my port, and the stock option that way people are not confused, but can still have some preference if need be.
Edit 2: When pushing a new recovery do it TWICE before using. I know mine works fine. My version should display as v.5.8.4.5
Edit 3: ROM Manager does NOT work with any recovery except the official recovery by Koush. You CAN boot into recovery via ROM Manger on the others, but that is it.
I am not responsible for your newly formed brick! I am also not an ADB expert, please search if you need help! ROM Manager DOES work with this version, you must install recovery manually first, then use ROM Manager to boot into recovery. Since we don't have any custom ROM's yet I can't say it works to install them.
Use whatever method you are comfortable with to push this, be it ADB or Terminal Emulator. CWM Standard can be installed via ROM Manager. The direct link for the Touch version is posted below to avoid purchase costs. Not superseding paying, Koush specified that pushing the recovery manually is free of charge.
Terminal Emulator commands: (Thanks - pdinphx)
Remember to change the name of the recovery, OR change the command line to reflect the name of the recovery! (Replace recovery.img with the appropriate img file name.)
$ su
# dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
# reboot recovery

Lastly, DO NOT donate to me for this, PERIOD. This is none of my work, all I did was push a couple buttons.

How would this work if we use recovery for custom kernels?
Let me figure out one thing at a time, lol. I am a newb dev. I know almost nothing about custom kernels aside from how to flash them on a device with an unlocked bootloader.

I am currently using the Recovery Builder Koush made for CWR. If anyone beats me to the punch, let me know because we don't need a thousand different CWR versions. I planned on building a touch version.

good luck with this, i've tried several recovery.img's on his builder site
none of them worked for me
since he doesn't have source (i still dont understand why) it might be a bit
do we have twrp for this?
I don't think we have any recoveries aside from the one you ported. You input the image from the update tar?

i didn't port that recovery, its the exact one from the e4gt team
i tried using the one from the stock image (in the sticky on this forum)
i think we might have better luck (although more work) getting TWRP going on this
we have source code with that, plus it has more features
True... Is anyone from TWRP getting the phone?
Took nearly 10 minutes but I got a recovery output img from the builder. I am about to jump off here really quickly though, I have to be up at 4:30am. I'll PM you the img and you can take a look.

Just used TWRP today for the first time on my Prime. I really like it and was hoping it would come to this. My vote goes to TWRP. I'm no good with dev work but can try and help out if needed. I'm a good tester lol

In my experience, never test what a dev wont test, lol. I'll gladly brick my phone as I have backups. I wouldn't push something I am not sure about onto you.
Just in case votes are being counted <wink> I vote TWRP.

If the dev won't put on it a phone they own then it won't go on mine. But if they have it and aren't having issues then I will test and see if I get any. 2 people never use their hone the same way.

For those potentially still interested I will try to work on this more tonight and test it out. I had to work 5 hours late due to a big fire/hazmat call at a factory out here. I smell like peppermint now because it was a potpourri fragrance plant -_-... Post progress of my testing later.

anybody have any luck with TWRP seeing internal sd contents?
**edit** or cwm for that matter?
Nope, testing right now finally. No luck even booting.

Is it possible to have more than one recovery program

There are times that I want to use either TWRP, CWM, or Rogue recoveries. Has anyone ever come up with a method of choosing from more than one recovery when booting? I have a bunch of nandroids saved on CWM and don't want to risk losing them. I have one or two from when I was using TWRP as well. I don't know if they will still be there if I return to using TWRP.
I am a relative noob when it comes to all this moving stuff on and off my Xoom, so I apologize if these questions sound like, "I have a cow and can't figure which udder to squeeze to get cheese, and which is for chocolate milk"
The backups will be there until you delete them. And no you can only have one recovery at a time.

You can have flashable zip versions of these recoveries stored in your internal CD card that you can flash any of which thru any of which to switch between recoveries, but I am not sure if the restore would work after you switch from one to another, try and see.

Even if you flash different recoveries you can always come back to the original one and restore.
Hit the thanks button and wam it disappears ! Try it.

Switching recoveries

I was thinking about switching over to CWM recovery since I've been hearing some bad things about TWRP, but I am not sure how to do this. Could anyone give me a guide or point me in the direction of one?

Not sure what bad you've been hearing about TWRP, but after using both, TWRP is easier, faster, and doesn't create all the blob files. Stick with TWRP

I've just been seeing that TWRP doesn't properly get rid of everything and was leaving traces of previous ROMs or something like that. Maybe this isn't true?
I'm using TWRP at present. In the past I have used a CWM style recovery and am certainly more comfortable with the interface with CWM, but will be giving TWRP a fair chance to win me over.
Just flash cwm like you did twrp. And cwm doesnt create those dup files by default anymore and in the past you could have easily changed it to tar in the options.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've used CWM for as far back as I've been modding my android phones, but I recently switched to TWRP (because I thought it would solve a problem I thought I was having; it didn't) and I like it so far. The interface seems much more user-friendly than CWM, so I really have no reason to switch back at this point.
I personally find TWRP to be much better than CWM right now.
I think the layout for twrp is way better. But I have had zero problems with CWM which I have been using for well over a year.
I just see no need to make the switch

I want to move to TWRP from CWM. The steps are to just go thru the normal install of TWRP?
Is there a way to remove CWM?

Twrp the new, better, recovery?

Back in the day (droid eris days) there was cwm and twrp and twrp was thought of to cause more issues than anything so it was recommended to use cwm. Now it seems to have changed (at least regarding the gs3). Is this true? IS twrp that much better/stable/safer than cwm? I've never used twrp (have seen videos/screen shots) and it looks alot easier...well user friendly...just curious as to if it is more stable/safer or just as safe as cwm? When it comes to changing the recovery in a phone I view that as updating a bios in your computer...don't do it unless you really really need to (last time I upgraded a bios the power went out the same time....not a good day). Just curious as to fellow flashers opinion on the topic? Seems twrp has been getting alot more updates than cwm as well.

I only used TWRP, its so much more innovative and easy to use with the touch based interface and i have absolutely no problems with it.

You were still in the wrong. Plus, there's already a dedicated TWRP recovery thread in the dev section.
To answer your question, TWRP really is a nice recovery. I usually stay a few versions behind the latest because what works now is good enough for me. I don't think you can go wrong with either TWRP or CWM, but having used CWM for so long I wanted to see what else was out and TWRP didn't disappoint. It's as safe as a custom recovery can be flashing modified software not intended for your phone.

CWM

What is the best way to install CWM on my TF300T, I am on the 4.2 bootloader, and I tried to put the CORRECT JB 4.2 version of TWRP 2.5.0 and it is like a split screen and will not function. Some time before that it asked for a password when I booted the recovery. I just want to start fresh with Clockwork Mod I guess.
Please point me in the correct direction.
Thank you

Not to be a douche but use the search function. And use twrp. Cwm is too buggy on the tf300. Its very easy for it to bug out and brick your pad.

If you searched you would have seen all your questions are answered in the stickies. Also you would have seen twrp is recommended over cwm due to cwm bricking devices. I'm sure you would prefer that not to happen.

Update to the most recent boot loader. I'm trying to tell you. You have to use twrp. Cwm bricks the tf300t while flashing ROMs. Everyone advises not to use it. I don't even think there's a guide here for it since its too much of a liability. If your getting a split screen you are doing something wrong. Reading everything and doing everything exactly right is the name of the game here. The tf300 is way to easy to brick. If your having problems just installing a custom recovery your best to just stay away from flashing on this device. You have to pay attention to boot loader version and firmware version or you are going to get errors. Your lucky you haven't hard bricked yet.
I know what I'm talking about. I didn't just fall off the turnip truck.

This is defiantly one of the most sensitive device to do everything on. Asus wasn't to friendly. Its like they want you to brick. And my bad about the rudeness extreme lack of sleep has made me very irritable.

Indeed flashing cwm is another way to brick the TF300. Lucky you didn't flash it.
The problem is that the latest bootloader changes the partition table on the TF300 - it makes /system larger in order to accommodate the larger Asus ROM. The issue is most of the legacy recoveries including the non 4.2 twrp and cwm don't understand this and thus the device becomes bricked as the partition table is now messed up.
