Hello I have gingerbread, but I bought it used and the guy had it rooted. So now the phone is always trying to update to ics but it can't because its rooted. All these popup messages are getting really annoying. So I just want to either update to ics or get a custom rom. Idk which one is better and I have no idea how to do either. Please help, thanks.
You should get rommanager and flash cwm recovery. Then donwload a ota that can be flashed with cwm and flash it. After that download the superuser zip to gain root again, flash it and you are set.
Good luck.

If you're happy with stock and dont need root, why not try to flash the stock JellyBean ROM?
if i do this, will it wipe everything off of my phone?

Yes it will wipe everything (apps, data) but NOT your sd card. If you have titanium Backup use that, I but I'm guessing you don't. The OP does say that it will wipe your phone also.

so.. i bought my nexus s 4g today, it will be here in a little over a week. do you guys think we will have full root access and maybe a stock rom that we can tweak by then?
i assume clockwork will be the recovery we will need to use? sorta excited here.
all i need is a stock rooted rom and a custom kernel with sbc and ill take care of the themeing.
we also are going to need a cdma section on here for the nexus s.
Excited huh?
Assuming existing CWM recovery works, all you have to do to root is use fastboot to unlock bootloader and flash CWM recovery, then in CWM flash the SuperUser zip. That's it!
SBC is an HTC thing. You won't find it around here.
Get your Android SDK ready now, and you be rooted within 10 minutes of getting the phone!

actually i was hoping some new nexus s 2.3.4 owner might be able to tell me if gingerbreak.apk works on 2.3.4, because if that works then its perfect for people just looking for root...

like i said we will need a cdma section here for rooting & flashing the recovery/roms.
i hope we get some decent devs for the phone as well. i see netarch makes some kernels for gsm.
How did you order it already? ? I though it comes out the 8th.

Hello, I´m trying to find a ROM to flash in my SGS 4G. Can anyone tell me if I can use the ROM's developed for the Galaxy S and flash it nice and clean in SGS 4G.
By the way, I'm using the stock Froyo and I live outside the US, since I've rooted and unlocked it I've not been able to use my local 2G/3G connection. Does anyone know any solution for that?
Thanks

If you don't understand what I mean when I say flash the stock rooted version of the ota then you need to stop and learn alot about your phone before you mess something up.

There is no need to tell me what i need or don't need to do with my phone.
There is no point in useless advices.
Let me be clear:
I want a stock 2.3.6 rooted phone, I am very capable of rooting it myself but because of a weird bug i am incapable of doing that.
what i tried to do is to install a 2.3.6 OTA and re-root, that failed.
so if you are able to provide me with a fix it would be appreciated, if not please provide a rooted version of a STOCK 2.3.6, and not a ROM with million unneeded extra stuff.
if you are unable to help that is ok, but do not presume that because i am newly registered i have no idea of what i am doing.
I still need help ...
Why did it fail?

From all the threads in general, it would seem the update does unroot your phone. Also from those threads it would seem flashing a custom recovery and, subsequently, the su zip will give you root back. I don't know of a pre-rooted version out yet.
i just upgraded to ics a little while ago using rom manager, i had to go back to stock 2.3.3 which unrooted my phone but did not lock the phone . I was wondering the same thing and that is how the heck do i root my phone now lol. my phone still shows the unlocked lock on the boot up screen under "Google" but i dont have SU permissions anymore. if I still have su.zip file and cwm can i just use fastboot and flash the img and su.zip ?
What if I don't have my original files to roll back to stock GB? I just downloaded the version Koush put up on his twitter...will that allow me to flash in CWM and update?

Download stock images from from manager then update to 2.3.6 then you can flash the one from koush's twitter.
Root will be lost after update. Currently flashing su.zip wont work. Still trying to figure it out.

We might just have to re*root when they release the info.

Let me ask you also, I'm currently running Alpha13 w/ Francisco.Franco kernel. Is the official that much smoother that I should lose my root?

After a while i got bored and tried installing Cyanogenmod 7 on my phone by reverendkjr's guide on installing cyanogenmod 6.3 using open recovery. After doin this, it said "well done" and "install success" then i chose "reboot now". After that, it stuck on the M logo. Plz help! I dnt want my parents to get mad.

Have you made a wipe all user data ?
Sent from my Milestone XT720 using xda app-developers app
I guess you haven't wiped the Davlik cache, wipe it back to factory data, wipe the partition cache (guess that's the name, if I recall) . Anyway, I do not recomment 7.2 !!! Install the CM 6.3 or CronosX !
Flashing back to stock is very simple, so there is nothing to worry about .
thanks for replying

If your phone won't boot & you can't get into Open Recovery you will to flash an SBF back to stock, root your phone & install Open Recovery to be able to flash any custom ROM.
I'll check back if ur advise works, thanks

It shouldn't. I know many here (me included when I had this phone) flashed the UK & Singapore SBFs without any issues with the carrier.
Which sbf should i flash
ive read a list of SBFs for the xt720 and there's only two SBFs thats in US. Brightpoint US and Cincinatti Bell US. it could even be Videotron Canada. which one should i use??
Viedeotron!
OK i guessed and i got it right, it was videotron, i used rsd lite and flashed it!! thanks, it works again!!

It shouldn't matter. You should be able to flash any of them.
