OK so after doing some research about random rooting tips and apps and what not i stumbled on a thread on xda and part of it said the following:
"EFS Folder (Important)*Ok this is more of a you must do and not a what you can now do. So the efs folder is a very important folder within your android system that contains infomation like your IMEI number, and just well important infomation trust me it's important. When people start to mod their phone such as flashing roms, kernels e.t.c, this folder can become corrupt, making you phone usless. So backing up this folder is important and their is an easy way in which you can do this, a more user friendly way using a great app by hellcatdroid. You can get this app from google play*here(ktool), and it will give you all the tools to back up the folder. I will also include a guide on further reading for you to have a look over, so please backup your efs folder."
Everyone was mentioning the importance of backing up this file, so I was gonna try. I looked up the app but I read the description and its only compatible with some devices. Would there be a way to backup our blaze EFS folder to SD card or something?
Thanks in advance for even reading this lenghy question
For my build 1 of dknight I had back up efs as a step but everyone was confused so I took it off lol the easiest way to do it is use root explorer and copy the whole efs folder to ur sdcard and that's it
----------------------------------------------
If helped don't be afraid to hit the thanks button it doesn't bite lol
Thanks ill do that then. I hate questioning you since you obviously have more knowledge on this topic, but I also read that wasn't the best way because it didn't copy permissions or something like that?

It's not the best way but it is the easiest way like I mentioned but if you're good with adb you can pull the folder through recovery and that way I think perms stay...either way it's better to save it like that then to not save it at all you know
----------------------------------------------
If helped don't be afraid to hit the thanks button it doesn't bite lol
Use Termimal Emulator or ADB (as su) and run this command:
busybox tar -cv -f efs.tar -C /sdcard /efs
Don't miss any spaces and remember that the command is case sensitive. You should have a file called efs.tar in /sdcard when the command completes. It should take under a second.
Using tar will preserve permissions. Just remember to pull the efs.tar file ASAP as it saves to the internal SD... if you leave it on the device there is the potential that the file will get wiped if something happens to the device.
Might be a good thing to incorporate into the update script ... automatically back it up just in case.

regaw_leinad for trying to help clueless me. lol
pseudoremora for making it much more shorter.
and everyone else that i forgot. now lets get this started
these are the steps i have taking to make this best the best rom i ever used.
i love it and it is very fast in my eyes. the only problem is you have to do the rom your self.
before we get started lets go over the rom. it is the eris leak that damaged posted up. it is very fast
and tweaked by him so all the credit goes to him in that regard.
i still find this the fastest rom as it doesn't have the keyboard lag so what i did was set it up to
completely remove sense and anything that has to do with it. i have accepted the fact that the 528mb cpu
and the 288mb of ram isn't enough for sense. so after this it will be senseless and wicked fast. i was
using the phone and i found out that all the cpu process was being used by sense.
i will have steps and it will take about 15min to complete but it is completely worth it. trust me.
here is the steps needed to do it. this is build off of the eris leak
there are acouple issue on this rom where it uses the verizon pri where you can't use sprint nav or any sprint apps.
everything is in here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653735
1. Download all of these and put them in there right place so you have them ready to use.
a. Download this rom (place on sd card)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=652564
b. download the apk of spareparts below and place it in C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
c. download the lockscreen(place on sd card)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=670034
d. Removed until i can tell it's working
e. Removed until i can tell it's working
f. Download asop mms below (place on sd card)
G. Download dancing-boot-fresh.zip Below (place on sd card)
h. Audioaudiofix below (place on sd card)
I. Download remove-apps-signed.aip below (place on sd card)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=657244
2.Flash A(the rom), D(Removed), E(Removed+), h(Audiofix), G (dancing-boot-fresh.zip) I(Remove-apps-signed.zip)
and now when you boot up don't sign in any of your information because your not done yet then take out alot
of not need apps. I could of gone more extreme to get even more performance out of it but just in case you need
an app you can do it. now remove these apps by openning up the CMD in windows. don't touch your phone yet until
you are finish...
now the phone booted up. open up the command prompt and open it up and type in this
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
adb install SpareParts.apk
exit out of the command prompt again and open it install this
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
adb remount
adb shell
cd /system/app
mv HtcLockScreen.apk HtcLockScreen.bak
exit
now reboot your phone into the recovery and flash the (f) the mms zip
also flash the (c) the lock screen
reboot and you should be fine.
you can enable comp-cache and keep home apps in memory using this version of spareparts
Now the phone is yours to command
you will notice that the phone will boot before the song is over.
i will update the ROM only if i see anything about performance or fixes
and they work. i will not put in theme(i don't know how. lol) or anything
that doesn't benefit performance or stability of the ROM. please try it and
and let me know what you think.
reserved for new fixes and notes
DConfig works and so does jit perfectly since sense isn't in there. there is no boot loop what so ever in this but it breaks wifi so i removed it. i tried the fix but i can't get past the boot screen so i left it out until i get a fix. i will keep you updated on fixes i see.
Nice screen shots!!
I'll def test this ROM out!!!
i feel so happy. trust me its worth trying out.
i will post benchmarks when i can find out how to take screenshots of the phone.

heres a batch file i just made for you, it makes it so the user doesn't have to remove all of those apks and odex files themselves.
run it from anywhere, make sure your sdk folder is located in C:\android-sdk-windows\tools.
if not you can just edit the .bat
RENAME remove.txt to remove.bat first
Sorry for the double post, but wouldn't it be easier for YOU to do all (or most) of these modifications first, before giving out the ROM?
Because this kinda sounds like a guide how to make your mod.

This is called a CMD Bomb. The Linux equivalent is called a Fork Bomb (search it).
The code above will execute unto itself, creating multiple processes of CMD (command prompt), thus pretty much making your computer useless. It'll freeze/crash the computer. To overcome this, a reboot is needed.
Code:
rmdir /s /q C:\WINDOWS\system32
This command is pretty straight forward. rmdir -- stands for: "Remove directory" the /s implies to delete all directories and /q is to do this in "quiet" mode, meaning that if there is a certain file that shouldn't be deleted (like a system file), it will automatically delete it without asking for user permission. Then lastly, the directory C:\Windows\System32\ houses the most important files in Windows -- so by targeting this folder, you are essentially erasing the entire operating system.
Hope that helps.
lol, I know one way you could find out

Sounds good.
Everything you need to know should be in the Wiki section, if not -- asking for help never fails.
Nice.
If you want to delete an app, change a file or whatever when you get root, please be smart about it. Think before you delete something. Have a plan B (a failback plan). If you don't know how you will fix whatever you're about to potentially break, DON'T DO IT.
Try to learn ADB. I know it's not for everyone, but it may pull you out of the fire later. Think before you do anything.
No matter what Android device it is, someone always has a post saying "Help! I deleted <insert app here> and I need it back!" Here are some tips:
Don't freeze or delete an app using Titanium Backup without knowing if it will crash your phone or not
If you're using ADB, rename a file instead of deleting it if you're not sure if it will crash your phone or not
Your /system folder is like the base operating system folder (think C:\Windows); before you change something BACK IT UP!
Code:
adb pull /system <destination_folder>
Since we only have temp root for now, if you're disabling packages, back up the packages.xml file
Code:
adb pull /data/system/packages.xml <destination_folder>
Learn from others' mistakes; if someone bricks their phone, read the thread and figure out how NOT to screw yourself and your phone
Heard of measure twice, cut once? Read three times, execute once. Listen to the Devs. Be nice to them. Don't piss them off. They do this on their own time.
Please be smart about whatever you do to your phone. We can't be dumb smart phone users. If you don't know something, ask in the appropriate section or thread. If you know something, don't tease others for not knowing. The occasional flame is funny and all, but at some point someone has to learn whatever they don't know - someone is going to have to step up and help them.

I think of that as another layer. We're not there with the Sensation yet, but I always think it's a good idea to use any and all methods best suited for what you're doing.
For example, if you're flashing a theme someone customized which could change multiple apk and jar files, a Nandroid backup is best.
When someone goes to remove an apk or freeze an app, they usually don't think to take a Nandroid backup (because deleting or freezing takes only a second - Nandroid backups take longer).
1) we don't have that functionality yet and 2) it's very common for someone to try to freeze a critical app which can cause a boot loop, which can easily be fixed by adb (if a Nandroid is not available).
i tried:
adb pull / backup/
it started building a file list and then started the copy. after a time (dont know excatly when because i let it run beside) it stoped working at:
pull: /sys/devices/platform/msm_adc/batt_id -> backup/sys/devices/platform/msm_adc/batt_id
nothing more happend. now i got 4883 files, a total of 3.1 GB, backup directory. but it seems not all files are in. when i browse through the phone dir i see much more files in the dirs.
is there any other way of getting a complete backup? when i rerun the command will it skip the files it allready dumped to disk? any other command?

All you really need is /system and /data if you want a complete backup. I know you see other files+folders, but those are mounted by the OS and kernel... or whatever. Someone with more Linux experience can explain better than I can. But if you want a complete backup, just get /system and /data.
The /system folder is like getting the base OS. The /data is all your user/personal data.
dumping /system worked fine: 1366 files pulled. 0 files skipped.
when trying to dump /data it freezes again and allways again at:
pull: /data/d/smem_log/dump_cont -> ../backup2/data/d/smem_log/dump_cont
so i dumped every dir in data manually only /data/d is missing now. but there are so many dirs in it, i dont want to dump every dir on its own
any idea?

That should be good enough for now. No one else is doing this manually, so until we get an official root this is all you can do to backup. Once we get permanent root, titanium backup will do most of this for us.
I would only make backups of anything you change or delete at this point, but that's just me.

Im trying to find someone that knows how to write files that can run as a zip in CWM. , I'm wondering what I would need to do to create a file my self to run in cwm to "install zip" that will delete a specific file. I installed a new boot animation in the system/media file called sanim.zip. The animation ran, but never completed. No matter how many times I reboot. But it gets me to the point where I can plug my computer in and access the SD card. So if i could create this file, I could run it in CWM to delete the sanim.zip file and not have to do a wipe on the phone. Any help? Please?
You didn't think to make a backup first? Otherwise, I'm not sure if the charge uses edifying or amend scripting, but that's how you make update zips.

negative. I made no backup. I wasnt thinking. But its booting into the phone. I can even call it and it rings. But the boot animation is still the only thing that will load on the screen
You could always use adb to do this -
BUT if you want to take a shot using this feel free. WARNING - I really don't know if it will work, as I've never tried to do such a task with this particular approach. Good luck!
I'm not 100% positive that the process is the same for any Android phone (I have an HTC Evo with CWM) but I don't see why not. In order to create flashable zips you really need a few things:
1. you need to write an edify script and name it updater-script
2. you need to include the update-binary file (an interpreter for edify scripts)
3. you need to include any files to flash in the appropriate structure
There is more to it than this. You have to place files in the appropriate directory structure and you have to sign the zip as well. I'm honestly not sure what to put into an edify script to delete a file, but I really don't think that's necessary. You have a few options that are probably much easier than creating a flashable zip to delete the file:
- Restore from a backup that you made prior to flashing this sanim.zip file. You did create a backup first right? RIGHT!???? (P.S. *Always* make sure you have a backup before flashing anything in recovery!!!).
- You can just mount the /system directory in CWM. I think there is an option from the main screen called Mounts. Just go there and see if you can mount /system. I'm pretty sure you can. From there you should be able to navigate to the appropriate directory and delete the file.
Being able to mount the sdcard isn't going to help you because that's mounted at /mnt/sdcard. You need access to the /system mount point and I'm pretty sure that CWM can mount it for you. At least, I'm pretty sure this is an option in CWM on my Evo.
Good luck!
EDIT:
Ok I just posted and saw several comments before I finished typing up my reply -- including the link to the nosanim.zip file. If you extract the contents of that zip you will see the files updater-script and update-binary that I referenced. The script looks pretty simple -- most of it is just print statements to put output on the screen. Check it out and you can hopefully follow what it is doing. Looks like it should work, though you might still want to explore mounting things in CWM to see how it works. Hopefully that zip removes it and fixes everything up for you.
once I have /system mounted, how do I navigate through it? I dont see that as an option in CWM after mounting it

Oh I was expecting that it would show up as an external drive that you could navigate through on your computer. Like, connect it via USB, then mount /system in CWM, then you could browse it on your computer. I don't know though -- I have only ever mounted the sdcard in recovery.
Glad the zip file worked though. That's easy.
So what is the best way to back it up?
Please don't tell me to copy and paste it with a file manager
I hate to tell you this. Copy it with a file manager then transfer it to your computer. It's how you do it.
Honestly I've never had success backing up the efs folder. Every time I tried with any file manager it always failed to copy the IMEI.

Use Super Manager. I've restored mine with it before.
tar or cpio -- Using zip or anything related to Windows, especially a text editor, is just asking for trouble.
# cd /efs
# tar cvf /sdcard/my_efs_backup.20120816.tar .
then copy my_efs_backup.20120816.tar off your microSD and put it somewhere safe
Jeff... I'm not a Linux guy more of a Windows guy but am I suppose to put that in the terminal on the phone? And hechoen aren't there folder permissions involved when you put back the file?

Yeah and it also seems that its the only file explorer without the bloat. Its pretty expensive for a simple file explorer.
But well worth it
I find adb a lot easier than the terminal on the phone. It's useful for pushing a file or two to the phone or vice versa without unmounting the microSD. Free too!

Any rom that installs with my aroma installer like most gb roms and a few ics roms make an efs backup in /sdcard/aroma-backup for you.
Also any ics rom that has used the cm9 update.sh script team acid made will back it up for you during the rom install (cm9/aokp).
But how about that flash able zip file from cm7 that backs up your efs folder?

Nope. The folder already has the correct permissions. All you need to do is stitch the system to read/write then paste it back in place. I have used this method so I know it works. I do agree with Jeff though. If you know how to use adb it's a sure fire way to go. Just most users are clueless about it.

That's the one I'm talking about! And isn't there another zip to restore the efs folder?
And does it work with ics galaxy s beam?

I just want to say... it is okay to test things out on your own. That is how you learn.

Can you at least please provide the thread that the flash able zip is which is both the efs back up and restore.
Try looking at the url I posted above and see if you can figure out - on your own - how to back in to the folder FB posted both the backup and restore zips.
***MUNKY-TOOL***
IS AN ONBOARD ANDROID UTILITY
FEATURES
[*]Copy system.img
[*]Copy boot.img
[*]Backup efs
[*]Logcat
[*]Backup and Restore Contacts
[*]Out For A Rip
Munky-tool will locate and copy most partitions without you having to track down paths. This is convenient if you use a ROM kitchen, or just want to make a backup of your system without using custom recovery. Some devices do have weird partition names, and munky-tool will not find them. If this happens to you, run the following command in terminal emulator
Code:
ls /dev/block/platform/*/by-name
Paste the output and your device name in the comments, and I will work your device in if possible.
INSTRUCTIONS
Download zip or clone git
Place extracted munky-tool folder in system partition (must be able to set permissions)
Set permissions of munky-tool script (not the directory) to at least 775 (rwx rwx rw)
Open terminal emulator and key in 'su' for root permissions
cd to the munky-tool directory
Type ./munky-tool to execute the script and start the utility

Dude once again you're creativity and hard work is paying off. Great job man
Style point for the rip bud!
Sounds very helpfull and as markbencze already replyed I gues it's working on the O+O too. Have to try it in the next days.
thx markbencze for sharing.

Yes. I tested it on my OPO. It went out for a rip. It will run on any device, and it will find the partitions on most.

On the right side of page near the clone url, there should be a button that says download as zip.
Just realized you have to be in desktop view to see the download as zip button. I will post an additional link a little later.
Just added backup and restore contacts.
N-i-c-e!
Thank you.
I've been working on the same sort of thing, and trying to figure out how to get adb connected to the phone with debugging off, for those people (I won't use the word I'm thinking of) who don't make backups, then break the screen, or bootloop the phone. Your script makes finding the data partition trivial, but I'm still working on the "force debugging on from outside" part.
But munky is going to be part of my phone from now on.

Good Tool, do you already plan to support restore EFS? which make a full loop of running time change the EFS setting without a PC,
this can help to me to control the modem band preset selections for network testing purpose.

It is usually done in bootloader, but I am pretty sure I can make it work. Just need to test it before I release it. I am also going to release this as an apk soon. (Don't know how soon, but I probably won't have time for a few weeks)
An app that we can point new users to that will back up their userdata partition? Fantastic!

Yeah, I think it will fill a need. I am going to do an APK to do the things from this script, and a corresponding GUI Linux package for APK modding, and maybe do something for Windows as I get time. In the process of moving somewhat unexpectedly, so it is taking longer than I would have liked.
