I am about ready to pull the trigger on a captivate, but was wondering if there is a skype app available for it?
I need to have it... WHen I checked the skype website under android phones there is a skype app but only for Verizon Phones.
Am I screwed?? no skype for Captivate
the skype people said it was coming this year.

I found a beta app which works fine

I've been using iSkoot from the market. No video, but great for audio (uses cellular voice for voice chat).

So to verify, iskoot will run on the Captivate and I can make skype calls with it? I don't care about video..
Also where could I get the beta version of skype?
Thanks

Does the beta allow use of wifi? I read the official skype program only works with verizon 3g (it doesn't run with wifi).

Installs fine through the SDK...
Chat works fine with wifi.
But if you make a call, it always wants to dial through (813) 527-2000 regardless if you dialed a phone number or skype contact. So it always needs your cellphone voice service.
FYI, I was able to complete the call to an 800 number, and I'm on AT&T.
I didn't finish the test of calling a skype contact.
You can alos install Skyp through the market if you use Market Enabler and change to VZW ID. I am not sure if it is the same as the beta or not.
EDIT, the VZW one exits with message "Can only be used on VZW phones"
I downloaded Nimbuzz and Iskoot and they suck BIG TIME. Recently, I was looking around and I found Skype Lite Beta and It works great. It's not in the MARKET! I guess, if you have a rooted phone, you can download it...I don't! But you can remove the SIM card, turn on your wifi connection and scan the application right here androlib.com
Like I said earlier, it works just fine on my non rooted Samsung Captivate. Give it a try!

Calls tested on Samsung Captivate using 3G/Wifi
Actually there is a official version on Market
By the way.. Very old thread )
I tried the official version from the market and voice calls work fine but I want to use video chat. Has anyone got a confirmed version of Skype that works with video chat. The market version just gives me a black screen even when set to use the back camera
Can any one advise this as its not listen in the 3G Specs..
By default no, but there has been talks about possibly getting it to work and a lot of people have success getting Line2 (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.toktumi.line2&feature=search_result) to work on it but requires you to even find the APK somewhere or download it on another android phone and copy the APK file off it.
I am looking for a core 2 Andriod 3.0 with at least a 7.1 or 10.1 screen...
Have to be able to make call.
Any recommendations..
I don't think you're going to find that anywhere.
Good luck with that, last I checked there were no tablets out there (at least in terms of Android 3.0+) that will allow you to make phone calls with them unless you use Skype (or mod it to allow making phone calls nativity.
I have heard that Samsung Galaxy Tab does allow you to make phone calls but I haven't tested myself and don't know if the newer Tab 10.1 (not sure if it's out yet or not) will support the phone features either since the Tab 10.1 will have 3.0.
I'm sure other members on this forums will step in to correct me if I'm wrong at anything I've said here but this is what I've saw so far.
I had some limited success with nettalk and my Google Talk phone number. Could connect with my home phone but my husband said it was very echo-y. I'm wifi only so it can be done. I'm going to try Line 2.
GrooVe IP works
i downloaded groove IP from the market tonite and it seems to work fine, it uses your Google voice number. No monthly fee like Line 2

receiving calls
you have to be logged out of Google talk on your xoom. Also, make sure that in your gv settings you have it set to google chat rather than your mobile number. Not sure if that made any sense, but they explain it step by step in the help section.
is that video calling or just voice?

How can I get the google chat to show up rather then the mobile number because I do not have that option. The only options I see are my mobile number and add this phone, nothing else. I can make calls with excellent quality on both ends but cannot get any calls on my Xoom because of this. What am I doing wrong?

That's the same problem that I was having. You have to log on to google voice settings using your web browser for the log in to chat settings.

I forgot about that. Well I am there on the web browser version of voice and I am a bit confused as to what I need to do exactly. Am I setting up a new number? I still don't see anything about google chat. I'm not a noob to technology by any means but never tried to set up calling on my Xoom until now because I never had the need for it. I do appreciate the help a lot.

Not really sure. When I go to google voice on my browser and then click on the setting tab in upper right corner and then choose voice settings, I can then click on the phones tab, that is where I am able to choose google chat.
Hope that helps, that's about all I got.
I will add that my calls work a lot better for the other party when I use bluetooth.

Dang... I just remembered a long time ago I deleted the google chat from my registered phones list because I didn't think I would ever need to use it. So that would mean I would have to add it back, but... yeah. If I try to add another phone it gives me the name to choose and I need to set a number for it, and I have no idea what the number would be for google chat. Thanks for the quick responses though! I'll try and figure out what to do next. And I have 2 nice bluetooth headsets and they do work great!

The legacy Galaxy Tab does let you use a GSM sim card and allow one to make phone calls as well as access EDGE/3G data...i helped a friend set up his tab a couple of weeks ago and can confirm this....im located in Mumbai, India...and the versions available here do allow the ability to also use it as a phone..

i believe its the kernel that is stopping it from possible.
at the momenet, honeycomb is designed to be a tablet OS, hence it didn't include the Phone's feature in the system.
for galaxy tab, (the older one), it running on Gingerbread which a Phone OS, hence it can be easily enable the phone feature.
i believe we need to wait till Ice Cream where it unite Gingerbread and Honeycomb, so that it has the phone's feature in the system and can be enabled easily.
Hey All
Just thought I'd add to this old topic. I have an Australian 3G Xoom, on the American 3.1 update, with my settings pushed back for 3G etc.
Tonight I installed the UAString/SMS mod, so that I could send SMSes (which work perfectly with Handcent, over the Telstra 3G network - just like any mobile phone would do). Then I tried calling my tablet. This also worked perfectly! The call came up, it connected, etc. I answered and this is where we hit trouble. No sound. Either way. So the Xoom doesn't have a microphone/speaker set up for sound during a call. I even tried setting the Xoom on speaker phone, but still nothing.
Any ideas? Not sure if this has been posted about before, and I thought it was pretty exciting, to be making normal calls, and SMSes (there is all this talk about Google Voice, which is useless outside of the US) on the Xoom, and this was very exciting for me.

None of the developer's are able to help me out on this ?
does it give you any error messages? you might have a setting enabled saying "prefer voice only on wi-fi"
Hi Fongz27,
the error i get is "You must be connected to a Wi-Fi to start a Video or Voice Chat" i checked all the settings it doesnt say the option you gave me anywhere.
Thanks a lot for your reply.
REgds,

I believe this is a limit in place by Google developers.
Here is my reasoning:
1. If you can use google chat voice feature, you will also be able to use Google Voice over Data, which means you by-pass "minutes allowed" by your mobile carrier (say you have 450 minutes airtime only....).
So if you think about it, and pair Unlimited Data Plan + Google Voice over GTalk = UNLIMITED CALL TIME!
Carriers would not be happy about this and would not carry android OS capable phones. This is the reason why I believe they only allow GTalk voice over WIFI.
=) Hope that makes sense to you.

Here you go. I had to zip it up since xda won't let me upload a*.db file. So just unzip it, transfer the file (gservices.db) to you phone, and use root explorer to move it to /data/data/com.google.android.gsf/databases/ and set the permissions to rw-rw----. Hope it works for you!

You hit the nail on the head with the statement " But I cant't find a version of cyanogenmod for the gt p6200." because there is not one currently. A quick look i the development section would only yield a result for a developers preview. That preview is not stable nor fully functional.

Hm... Are you sure you need CM for this?
I use Sipdroid+pbxes.org+Google Voice on my WIFI-only GT-P6210. It seems to work well enough.
If all you want to do is receive and place phone calls on your Tab using your Google Voice account, and you don't want any of the extra features of pbxes.org, then all you need is the GrooVe IP app.

I use Groove IP with little to no problems, can even use my bluetooth headset most of the time. Usually if I have issues, a reboot or redial solves it.
I use
CSipSimple + SipSourcery + IPKall + Google Voice for calls.
Works great.

Same here.
Which means we with T-Mobile devices don't get to use voice commands to answer or reject calls. One of my favorite features has been left out! WTF?!
Really REALLY not happy here... I use S-Voice CONSTANTLY.... I have (or had) the ICON on my desktop front and center... for years. Seriously use it 4 or 5 times a day to directions, to make calls, to make appointments. WTF ????
However... and this is the wierd part... It WAS on the phone until the latest update. I bought the phone Saturday.... migrated with switch from my S5... USED S-Voice Saturday evening... noticed an update had been postponed... did the update.... then S-Voice was gone. Again... I repeat... WTF????
I may be dead wrong and talking out of my a** here, but isn't Bixby supposed to replace S voice?

I believe that is what Samsung intends to do.
No S-Voice on Galaxy S-8+ which affects Gear Neo smart watch
I noticed that when I went to reply to a text on my smart watch, a Gear S2 NEO, there was no option to voice text, in fact S-Voice is no longer there at all. I could not find in the Galaxy Store or Play Store. This is a very valued feature on the smart watches to answer your text messages vs templates or emoticons. Please let me know if there are any other options or please bring it back!
I went to the previous link and a message appeared saying I could not download. I went to apk mirror and found this

I was able to download and install. After the install it said it had to update the voice service framework which it automatically downloaded and installed.
