Xoom connection to ad-hoc network - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Xoom (Wifi Only) with ICS 4.0.4 and a xperia x8 with the default rom from sony.
I installed bernacle wifi tether in the X8, and I set it up.
I tryied to connecto to this ad-hoc from my xoom but I couldn't. I tryied all the wpa_supplicant files I found googling.
Wifi analyzer sees the ad-hoc but when I try to connect it says that ad-hoc is not jet supported in android.
Any Ideas?
Best regards

I need to use barnacle as well because im on Verizon.....and the answer that I've gotten is that were probably never going to get ad hoc support.

Dyelon, I'm new to tablets, I think I'm missing something.
My Xoom is Wifi Only (no carrier lock). My xperia X8 is locked for Clarot (Telmex). When I tether on the X8 my laptot sees the ad-hoc network, Wifi Analyzer (on the Xoom) also sees the ad-hoc network (and when you try to connect to it Wifi Alayzer says that ad-hoc networks are not supported by android), but I cannot connect to it (Android doesn't see it)
Regards

I can tell you that my Transformer connects perfectly to the mobile hotspots on both my HTC Desire and Galaxy Tab.
Does your WiFi Router application create a real hotspot, or is it an adhoc network? If it is adhoc, it probably won't work out of the box, and I think you'd need to be rooted in order to make the necessary changes.
Regards,
Dave
Hi Dave,
I can't actually distinguish between the two (real hotspot vs adhoc network), but I did start a Desire HD rom on my HD2, then started the WiFi Hotspot app that comes with it.... and surprise, surprise it works....
Good catch and thanks this will have to do until I figure out what to do with the WinMobile WiFi router.

Hi there,
Does usb tethering work? Well, for sure, the native usb tethering won't work, because there are no drivers, but is there an app to make it work? (@HD2 with DHD Rom)

I don't know, there is no usb on the tablet only on the keyboard (which I don't have). As far as I can see in the Adnroid settings "usb tethering" is available though.
Hope this helps,

Hi Guys,
Did you work out the original problem with the Wi-Fi router on the HTC HD2 and the Asus Transformer, im using the exact same combo and they will not see eachother (Wi-Fi) No Wi-Fi at work cos of Security but now i dont have comms to my tablet
Thanx Guys
I achieved this by using the Wifi Tether application, it requires root on the phone (Android phone here, sorry). The biggest problem with mobile-to-wifi internet is that most applications will create ad-hoc Wifi networks, as opposed to hotspots. Transformer with stock software will not even see an ad-hoc network, I imagine this is your issue, too. There two options here:
1) if you want to root the Transformer, it is possible to make it see an ad-hoc version, but changing one of the configuration files.
2) you can use Bluetooth tether instead of Wifi, for most situations it will do the trick. No need to root the TF then.
See this thread for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074317&page=1 (it is about droids, but may help anyway).
I'm also using the Wifi Tether app that came with MDJ ROM for HD2 and it works great... too bad the small battery on the HD2
I havea motorola Atrix,i can tether using barnacle a rooted app, stock mobil hotspot, and through blue tooth. Havent had an issue yet.
Same problem here HD2 (WinMo6.5) + Transformer
I don't want root my transformer (yet)

You don't have to root your transformer to use a mobile hotspot (takinga 3g signal and converting it into a wi-fi router)
If you have any rooted Android phone, you just need to install either Baranacle, Wireless Tether, or Open Garden. All are root-only apps, and you sometimes have to try each to get it to work. At first only open garden worked, wireless tether/barancle didn't. It's very doable though.

You do have to root your transformer for barnacle.
Barnacle creates an ad-hoc connection which the transformer won't see without first rooting and replacing the wpa_supplicant file. Most wifi tether applications do the same thing.

I had the same issue until I tried the settings below. I have a EVO 4G so I don't know if the HD2 is anything like it but if it is then you can try these:
Go into setting
Go into wireless and networks
Go into Hotspot Settings
Go to Menu and click on Advanced
Select LAN settings
Click on DHCP
After that you should be able to connect. If not then your setup is different then mine and won't work. It's worth a try though.
not much helpfull I guess but works fine on my xperia arc stock rom unrooted android 2.3 so no need to use apps at all

[Q] Portable Wifi hotspot software

Had been using aNetShare on my rooted HTC Hero to setup wifi hotspots and has worked fine with laptops etc.. but seems the transformer cant see it - I guess its because its an ad-hoc network and not supported ?
Just wondering if anyone can recommend an app I can run off my phone that does work using somthing other than an ad-hoc network - or is this not possible ?
Many Thanks !!!
This prob wont help but the personal wifi hotspot option in android 2.2 works fine but android tether or barnicle don't seem to work.
Doesn't PdaNet support bluetooth tethering? Is that an option for tethering the Transformer?

[Q] WiFi Tether Help

I'm trying to set-up a WiFi hotspot on my X10mini pro, I have root access and have tryed opengarden + barnical Tether apps from the market.
Barnical seems to work ok until I search for the SSID, it can't be found.
Opengarden comes with an error saying I am missing drivers or something.
Can anyone advise an app or a way through a terminal emulator to fix this and get the WiFi working as a tether.
Thanks,
Blade

Verify in your router wifi option if you have SSID visible.
Barnacle don't give you the option to Show/Hide SSID
I have scanned for it on both mine and my friend HTC, I have even tryed matching IP/Gateway settings, But it just dosnt seem too broadcast.
Is the xperia X10mini, phisicaly capable of broadcasting a Wifi signal

[Q] katkiss 4.3 v020 problem scaning wifi ad-hoc

Question for Timduru.
I got sony ericsson xperia x8 with [email protected] kernel runing just fine.
i use barnacle app to setup a hotspot.
my pc,laptop and other devices can connect to my x8 barnacle hotspot without any problem.
my sister have tf101 with yours 4.3 v020 katkiss and it cannot see my x8 hotspot even i changed every setting in barnacle app trying to somehow get EEEpad to see hotspot.
before katkiss 4.3 i had team eos4 rom and it recognized and connected perfectly to mine x8's hotspot but now i got this problem.
barnacle sets up as ad-hoc network with wep encription and im used to it.
so,mainly problem is that when i scan networks tf101 cannot see barnacle wifi hotspot from mine x8.
do you have any solutions or is there a problem in ROM?
im posting on this forum for first time even i have this acc for a while. im not much a question-type of person, rather reader so finaly i bumped on problem and i have to ask you this.. hope you got some solution because i am rly used on barnacle app and i dont want to change the way of setting up hotspot on my x8.
sry for my bad english. u got best grades from me for your work on this rom and keep up that way.
with best regards, iwek from croatia
Ad-hoc is not supported in KatKiss 4.3
