[Q] Want to take Nexus S back to Stock - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a Nexus S i19020A that I bought off someone. It came with ICS and I have been using it for a good 2 months. Just a couple days ago, I received an update for Jelly Bean on my phone and figured it would be safe to update it, so I did. After the update, the phone restarted and rebooted but my settings would not run. Every time I try to go into settings, I get this message, "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped.". I tried to factory reset the phone back to ICS using the recovery mode but all it did was erase all my apps as if it was taken out of a brand new box but the problem remained as well as the Jelly Bean. I would like to return the phone back to its stock. I am a total noob when it comes to android phone since this is my first android phone and it came with ICS already. Would someone be able to walk me through step by step on how to return my Nexus S back to stock or fix the settings app problem? I would appreciate it if someone were able to help me. I also have skype if it makes it easier to walk me through the process. Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Go to https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Find your NexusS version (ICS 4.0.4) and flash it. Then feel free to update or not to jelly bean. (The system will download the upgrade automatically)
All instructions are in the same page

Thanks for replying back to my post. Unfortunately, I can't seem see Android on my device manager on my computer maybe because I can't get access to my settings to turn on my usb debugging mode. I also can't get turn on wifi as well on my phone to download an app that will help me enable it. I can't use fastboot on my computer to flash my phone if it cant detect the device. Do you have any ideas to get around this? Thanks

Do you have exclamation marks in Device Manager when you connect your phone?

Hi ekerazha!
Thanks for replying to my post. I actually somehow managed to get my phone installed properly onto my computer and my device manager shows android now. With that said, I was able to use fastboot to unlock my phone and fix my problem and reverting back to ICS ROM instead of the Jelly Bean ROM. Im still debating if i want to update my phone to JB ROM but im afraid it might screw it up again. But thanks again for replying. I really appreciate it.

Yes you can update. Your problem was special (may be something u ve installed). There is no raison now u have flashed your data to get Setting error again.

[Q] g2x Major Problems after Rooting / unRooting

Alrighty.. This phone has caused me so much time and trouble, I finally decided to start a thread. I really cannot find an answer for my problems by surfing...
In the beginning, all was great. Then I wanted to root my phone...
I went here and followed these instructions to root initially.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
(Stock Gingerbread OTA 2.3.3 Rooted)
I started to have problems:
-WIFI kept shutting off upon sleep. I depend on WIFI because I only have a 200MB plan..
Also, I have low signal in my apartment, so I use wifi calling very frequently. After about 10 minutes, wifi calling disables itself.
SO, I wanted to UNROOT. The link that said 'UNROOT' did not work..
Next, I used this link to unroot..
http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/23/how-to-unroot-the-t-mobile-g2x/
I returned to stock froyo OS. BUT i still wanted gingerbread!! I tried to use the LG update desktop tool, but it kept on saying that 'the phone was already up to date.'
SO, I ended up 'installing from zip' the backup that was made before I downgraded to froyo.. Unfortunately, this left me back at square one: A rooted gingerbread.. Exactly where I was before.
I went to this link next.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
I used the 'UNROOT ZIP', and it unrooted it!!
Seems perfect right??
BUT, ever since I did that, my GPS doesn't work. It is unable to pick up my location.
I tried to 'restore to stock' using BOTH the option while the phone is on, and using the 'clockwerk mod' (Where you hold power and the down button).
I just want things to go back to the way they were.
I'm hoping that I can just have a NORMAL 2.3.3, with GPS working, and everything back to the way it was before I started this whole 'root' journey..
Thank you so much ahead of time for taking the time to help me. Your 5 minutes could save me hours..
try restoring to stock, 2.2.2, then get the LG Updater tool to "Recovery Phone" which is at "Customer Support" and the last one, enter your phone model, and serial number, and it should recover it to stock with no problems for you. Good Luck.
Wifi is suppose to shut off on sleep mode unless you configure it not to.

I will try this now.
Thanks. Hopefully it works.
It still says 'Update not required' after I use the recovery version.
It is saying that because just flashing 2.2 you are still on the July baseband which is telling the software you are on the latest. You should be able to find a stock nandriod in the forum somewhere to flash Gingerbread stock.
Go to Wireless and networks > Wifi > hit menu > Wifi sleep policy > never.

I was unable to find such a thread. I decided just to root it and go with the 'eagle' and deal with random problems..
However, the front facing camera keeps on stretching the picture..
Any thoughts?
FFC issues are common on non-stock roms trying to use LG camera instead of Android stock camera. Rooting your phone cannot cause wifi issues, etc. unless you made some errant changes to system files. Rooting does nothing but allow you or programs to get what is called in the Linux world SuperUser permissions. It allows you or the program to change or do anything it wants and removes the restrictions placed on the handset by the manufacturer and/or Google. All the rooting process does is add two files to your system and set the proper permission for su to be able to become root. The SuperUser.apk is the gateway to root. It is there to protect you from malicious programs getting root, as you have to approve all root access requests. It is actually very safe unless you do something stupid.

System Firmware Update notice....

Hi All,
Newbe with a Asus TF101 and I have to say it's been an adventure !
Originally I found a posting how to root my tablet and it worked great until an update notice appeared and locked up my system. After much panic stricken hunting around I found this site and was able to update the tablet to ICS 4.0.3 which is even better then before and runs great.
Now another update notice is appearing again......
[Q] How can I check that this update is ok to use or since I've installed a custom ROM I won't be able to use any of these updates from Asus ?
thanks,
Don't update if you have CWM or custom roms installed( root is fine in most cases). If you do want to update, return your tf to stock first.
Thanks for the reply.....
I was thinking that given my last update experience. Is there a way to turn off the update notices so I don't accidentally update ?
Stop DM Client running in the settings menu. That'll stop your notifications, at least until you reboot and then you'll have to stop it again. You might be able to freeze it using Titanium but I haven't tried it so I can't confirm it won't cause any problems.

[Q] Reinstalled stock rom, can't get upgrades

Hi, I'm sorry if this has been asked before, basically a few weeks ago I was having problems with my Tab 2 p3110, it just wasn't running right. At around the same time I ordered an EZCAST hdmi device for my tv.
Well, I used Odin and cwm and taught myself how to upgrade to kitkat withCM11 nightlies, great stuff, fixed the issues I was having.
Then my tv dongle arrived, the one feature I wanted to use more than anything was screen mirror/AirPlay. No you can imagine my dismay when I couldn't even find the option in cm11, I found cast screen but it wouldn't work.
So, having tried several nightlies hoping the problem would be fixed I settled on reinstalling the stock 4.2.2 rom following the instructions on here. It bricked my tab 2 but I managed to get it going again and reinstalled the stock rom after several days of trying.
All this to find the screen mirror option was not available on the stock rom!! I can't figure out why but thought, maybe, an upgrade was needed, so I headed to the update tab to be told that my device was modified, updates are not available!
To be honest I'm ready to throw it in the lake behind my house I'm that frustrated, does anyone have any suggestions on getting screen mirroring working?
http://live.samsung-updates.com/index.php?device=GT-P3110
Here... get the clean firmware here. It will give a pure system that won't trip the modification check.
It will also give you the factory recovery system.
Look up the p311x PIT file and when in odin pick the size that matches your tablet.
If it hangs at boot try doing a factory reset from recovery.
That's what worked for me to allow me to check updates.
I can't say that this will fix screen mirror, since I've never used it or seen the option on my p3113

Thanks for that. I can't find my model number on the list, The british one is close and as thats where I live i think i'll give that a go.
Thanks again for your help
Didn't work, still saying that the device has been modified and in download mode shows "count 1"
Any other ideas?
Triangle away?

Hey, I use my tablet with the Samsung Smart View ap.
You must have the right samsung tv for it to work and it's not perfect, but it is a nice feature. I stopped updating my tab because this is the most important feature for me.
I rooted my device and have the same issue as you, that's how I came across this thread.

[Completed] Formatting Samsung S3 Problem

Hey, so basically I'm in a situation where I have no idea what to do.
I recently just got a new phone, and am going to give my Samsung Galaxy S3, SGH-T999V model - from Wind Mobile to my Dad. Basically, when I first got the phone - a couple months after, I decided to try Rooting it, and I did, successfully. Since I didn't really know what to do with my rooted phone, I decided to unroot it - then tried rooting it again some months later, but it didn't work successfully. Basically my phone wasn't rooted, but I had the "Team-Win" recovery on it.
I wanted to bring my phone back to it's original state - and have the stock recovery on it. After some Googling, my solution seemed to be to flash the stock rom for the SGH-T999V model onto my phone using Odin. And I did that - and it worked successfully. But I still couldn't check for OTA updates or anything, it said my phone had still been modified in an unauthorized way.
Now that I need to give the phone to my Dad, I have to format the device and erase everything. This is where my problem starts. When I try to format it (using the Stock recovery), I see a bunch of error messages, with the Android logo falling down in a kind of dead way. I reboot my device, and nothing changes.
It still has all my data, and everything on it.
Sorry if this is the wrong area to post this (I'm relatively new to the forum), and if my problem doesn't make much sense - I've tried being as detailed as possible. Could anyone help?
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. Flashing the stock firmware should show you to get ota's. This should have everything you need,http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/samsung-galaxy-s3-sticky-roll-thread-t2344125. GT-N8010 - Firmware Upgrade

Hey there!
Just ran into some troubles with my GT-N8010. I had been using stock on it for quite awhile, but have been noticing that many of the newer apps do not work with JB. I had rooted and used my Asus Transformer before, figured that it was probably about time to get some more life out of the Note 10.1.
My first option was to upgrade from JB to KitKat. Unfortunately there is not an official update in Canada, but using Odin I should have been able to upgrade it. This is where the issues came. First, it failed twice. I restarted the computer, and tried it once more. Success! It was downloading. It took a few moments, but eventually it failed as well. The download stopped and I was left looking at my tablet having 3/4 of the install complete. I left it for awhile, hoping that it would restart itself or reload. Nothing happened, and I had to restart the tablet.
Situation now: I am stuck at the "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
First thing I tried was getting to the download screen, so I have that. I figured I could just flash it back to the offical JB from Canada, but now it's like the computer won't recognize the device. Even unplugging and plugging the USB back in does not even give me the PC Recognizing sound. I moved to a laptop, and it could read the device, but once I installed Samsung USB and Keis, it stopped. Odin doesn't recognize it and I am not sure where to go from here.
Is using the SD card an option? Can I somehow force the computer to read the tablet?
I have looked through the forums, but didn't really see much in the way of help.
I hope to hear from you guys! Thanks in advanced! If I need to provide more information, please ask.
Is using the SD card an option>>> NOT for stock custom rom only .
I don't mind installing a custom rom at this point. If it is still an option at this point the I don't mind at all. If there is anyway you could point me towards that option, I will definitely give it a shot.
The development threads.
You will need to flash a custom recovery tar through Odin .
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2490954
Part of the problem is that the Odin, even my PC, are not recognizing the the Tablet is connected through my USB. So I cannot flash anything right now.
I figured it out. It was all because of my cord. I went out and got a new one, flashed 4.4.2 easily. Hope that helps everyone who has issues as I did.

Hi, I've read your posts. Helpful.
I'm in the situation of having tried to flash a custom recovery, to then flash a custom ROM.
Started Odin, began to flash, then Odin showed failed.
Now the n8000 no longer starts, just hangs after the Samsung logo/music.
I do have two different cords, so will try that later.
Question, did you end up flashing a custom ROM later, and if so, which one?
Thanks.
