Put apps without a grid - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Wierd question. Any way to put apps on my home screen with no grid? Just drag and drop like on a computer. I am an avid homsecreen customizer but I have no idea how to do this
Sent from my One X using xda premium

pretty sure you cant. there would have to be an option for the homescreen setting to align the icons to the grid like on a computer and when you uncheck it, it would allow you to place icons on your homescreen as you please. i dont know of any launcher that has had this option built into or if there is a way around it. a mod would have to either make a launcher with this option or customize an existing one to do so. hope my assumption is right, and is so i hope this helps your question.

PCs also have start screen grids. Not sure what you are asking.

You can turn that off though and have total desktop anarchy (Right click -> View -> Align icons to grid
Also, I don't think it would be feasible to not have a grid system on Android. Widgets must know how large/small to draw themselves and without a set grid I think they would just choke and die.

I know at some point, there was a launcher that had *less* of a grid. Not completely none, but a little less. Not positive if this is the one, and I'm about to flash a new ROM so I can't test right now.
But it *may* have been SSLauncher. If I remember what it was for sure, I'll try to let you know

EDIT: Accidentally quoted the poster above me lol
EDIT 2: Also this https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDEwNCwiY29tLmFwcHMuYW55d2hlcmUuZnJlZSJd
appears (based off description, once again I haven't tested sorry) to be a widget that allows you to place app shortcuts wherever on top of it. Or something. Haha, I don't know.

TSF Shell has this functionality. IIRC you can place an unlimited number of icons in any arrangement you want, including overlapping other icons and widgets. It's actually a half decent launcher (after some recent updates), albeit gimmicky at times.
The only issue is the fact that you'll have to pony up a measly (read: ridiculous) $17.

Ah! that's the one! Haha, I never used it, but I knew it existed. I knew it was one of the letterLaunchers. Thanks dude.

I would like to see the grid spacing more compact atleast. It only allows 4x4 right now. I think it could be bumped up to 6x6 maybe.

Have you ever tried Lightning Launcher?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.pierrox.lightning_launcher
It can do what you're describing and more. I have to warn you, though: its concept is a little different than the traditional android launcher, so it may take you a little time to get a hang of it and customize it to your liking. However, it is very, and I mean VERY, customizable. In addition, is very light-weight and fast, even on a low-end device (hence the name Lightning Launcher), so the HOX would think it's a feather.
I used to run it a while ago, but I'm back on Apex Launcher now to complement my AOKP ROM experience. I don't really mind the traditional grid layout. Who knows, I might come back to it that's just the beauty of Android!
Give it a try if you want!

GO Launcher/SMS

I use both GO Launcher and GO SMS as of today....very amazing.
Beats LauncherPro and ADW IMO.
Allows a folder style just like the iphones in the app drawer where you drag and drop apps on apps to make folders. It also allows different app drawer styles....left to right scrolling or top to bottom.
It also has re sizable widgets...just like launcher pro plus.
Its overall the snappiest launcher i've used.
Here's some screenshots of my setup!

Go launcher is the only one I use as well. Lp is kool but I really like that built in app uninstaller and task stop. Its pretty tight especially on the synergy rom.
I haven't used GO Launcher, but I am using GO SMS right now and I am impressed. It seems to be pretty laggy for me, but that is improving with every update, and that I have now set message limits. Also, the turn on screen pop up function is lacking.
It looks nice...MIUI'ish

I have paid versions on LP and ADW Ex. I am currently using Go Launcher. It is fast and unobtrusive. I always worry that by adding more features the launchers get bogged down.
I will probably try customizing ADW some more but right now I like Go launcher. I used LP for the longest time before.
People keep requesting more and more features in the Go Launcher thread in the Android Apps section. I actually hope they don't add to much.

Just gave both a try. I really like the go launcher, but its missing a few things I like. I would like the ability to shrink the dock size and put a custom background. I like the app drawermuch better than lp or ADW.
not too shabby

I use the MIUI rom, even though I'm not a fan of the iProducts. Aside from a few features and the lack of an app drawer, mine doesn't look like an iPhone since I've themed it. It has the feature you're looking for, but I'm not sure if they make the rom for your phone - or if you're rooted, for that matter.
I know Go Launcher Ex does this in the app drawer. I didn't use it long enough to notice if it does it on the homescreens as well.
thanks for the info - I'm an ex-iphone user and I'll check these out.

The ONE thing that bothers me about Sense.

The lagginess of the app drawer scrolling. Maybe it's because I'm so used to LauncherPro but it just doesn't feel smooth. I really do like all the other aspects of Sense though.

At least that's possible with root. I can remap the right button to whatever I want. I don't think it's possible to have sense + horizontal app drawer, though, even with root.
I like the horizontal app drawer because unlike vertical app drawer, I don't over-scroll.

I recommend go launcher ex over either of those. I never actually see anyone else recommend it though, but it's a drastic change from sense. It has a horizontal sliding app drawer and I never notice lag. You can do a vertical one as well if you like with it, though I dont see why. The only complaint I might have is the lack of built in widgets (it only has 2 right now), but they're adding more. However, I dont care about those anyways.

ADW ex needs folders in drawer

Hi to everyone.
First if this kind of post is frowned upon I do apologizes, but as you read on you will see why it's necessary. As the blog for ADW has the comments closed, i suspect the out pour of requests for folders in the drawer has caused Anderweb to become frustrated as well.
I have been a hard core ADW user and love the launcher more than any other, it's fast, feature rich and meets all my needs but one....
Andrweb has decided to adopt a categories view for the drawer and as cool as that is, it's just not something i can get use too. trust me i have tried, several times.
I really just wish we could have folders, I can have all my apps on one page and folders with names just works with the way my brain works.
So with out further a due here is my begging post, please Anderweb can you help me out and add the option to have folders in the drawer, the way you have them on the desktop is sick (love it) and adding that feature to the drawer would be awesome.
As for adding comments about other launchers, please save them for another post. No need to fill this with try this try that. I have tried almost every launcher and ADW is what I'm comfortable with.
if you are with me and a loyal ADW user and would also like to see folders added to the drawer please share your thoughts and maybe with the power of word we can get this feature added or at minimum a reply from Anderweb saying he will never add the feature and at that point I/we can decide if we want to move on.
this post is in no way interned to offend Anderweb or any other person, no animals or live stock we're harmed writing this post. In fact a few trees have been saved. LOL

I think a lot (10% ?) of ADW user's might have already left waiting for folders in the drawer. plus update's.
Maybe if we can get everyone to post we can send Anderweb the link here.
So share the link to people you know use adw and want folders in the drawer.
Should have titled the post, folders in the drawer. Kind of catchy. lol
Ok i have been thinking of this to much. lol
I thought this post would get more hits, maybe I'm the only one waiting for folders in the app drawer.

Unfortunately I too have left my ADW Pro copy uninstalled because of folders in the drawer, using instead Go Launcher as well... I'll much prefer to use ADW, but the categories in ADW are too "clunky" to actually use at this time, well in my mind I should say.
I use ADW on my transformer with ICS and love it. I never used folders in android but I use my tablet for work and sometimes I find myself looking through a slew of apps looking for what I want. I could see putting all my work stuff into a folder would make things easier.
I also like to hide apps that Widgets and launchers throw in there, plus apps I never use like Latitude. On family members tabs, I like to hide root apps and file explorers and the likes.
Thank god for android and choices!

guess the need for folders in the app drawer is not as big of a deal as i thought. or most have moved on.
I have been pestering go launcher to add 7 icons to the dock. the dev said he tried but it looks bad. i asked him to try adw or zeam as both have the ability to add more icons to the dock and both do it well. time will tell if the dev adds this to go.
gloves are off, maybe adw will wait tell next Christmas to release an update? same as last year, no updates but a new one for Christmas. must have needed some extra cash... LOL
the free version of adw is already open source. that is why cyanogenmod used to use it long ago. only adw ex (paid) is not open source i think.
http://code.google.com/p/adw-launcher-android/
Am I the only one to find that ADWLauncher EX is more complicated and harder to use than the free version? I had to roll back to the free version just a while after trying the EX one. I love the scatter transition effect which is not available in Ex and I really hate the 2-line app labels.
Morever, I can't access Launcher settings in my phone settings. It was not there and I had to make a shorcut on my Home screen. Maybe because I had my free version still installed. Doesn't matter, Free ADWLauncher ftw.

Go Launcher EX VS ADW EX

Alright, here's a short, crappy head to head review of the two launchers.
I'm on Valhalla-Final ROM, which has a UI based off of ADW. I started out using Go Launcher, which over the past two months, has seen major updates with new features and improvements. It's probably the most customizable launcher I've used until now. It's definately no slouch, and the coolest thing, to me, would be that you can take bits and peices of each theme you download, to piece together your own. For example, I wanted a green and black theme, but none of the ones I could find met my needs completely. So, I downloaded a girly theme that had a green dock background, and another theme with nice icons, and another theme that had great backgrounds, and pieced them together. GREAT! It's smooth, and the launcher has many plug-ins available to enhance your ability to truly customize your phone, such as Go Locker, and Go Weather.
Anyways, a couple of days ago, I decided to check out ADW Launcher EX, to see if it molded to my ROM better. I was so surprised! ADW Launcher, in my opinion, blows Go Launcher out of the water! It doesn't have as many screen transition effects as Go, however, the in-depth customization is far deeper. Hidden dockbar is great, as well as the NUMEROUS icon custom options. As far as I know, ADW doesn't have any plug-ins to enhance the experience. However, I've found Widget Locker to be far more superior to Go Locker, and I use it in it's place. Themes for ADW are just as plenty as Go, but themes in ADW seem to blend better, and provide more eye and finger candy. A person can get lost inside the settings menu of ADW, and that's a good thing for folks like us.
Verdict:
Go Launcher - Great launcher! Perfect for those looking for freebies. Great customization. Plug-ins.
ADW - For a couple of bucks, you get a highly customizable experience, Definately worth it!
I deleted GO after messing with ADW for 10 minutes. The only thing I miss about GO is the triple dockbar. ADW is still cool, with the 'hidden dockbar.'
BONUS!:
A few apps to add for more customization:
Simi Folder
UltimateFavs Pro
Widget Locker
Clockr
Beautiful Widgets
If you haven't heard of any of those apps, YOU MUST CHECK THEM OUT!
If this helped you decide on your launcher, hit thanks!
Yea I bought adw ex 2 yrs ago and never looked back.

Seriously, skeptics...Try the paid version of ADW! You won't regret it! When on your home screen, press the menu button, then press 'More', the 'ADW Settings', then 'General Behavior', then go to App Drawar, select type, and choose 'Vertical 4D'. It's wicked!
They're both great launchers, I wouldn't say adw is more customizable though. Something I always liked about go vs adw was the ability to change your icon to any custom image, such as a downloaded picture. The hidden dockbar of adw is nice, but does nothing other launchers scrollable dockbars don't.
I actually use zeam though. Its not as customizable as adw or go, but it still has more customization than alot of people realize. And I like the minimal size compared to others.

Yeah your right, you can use any image for icon now. I just downloaded the updated (Dec 11) version.
Now the only option its missing that I like is the option to have app drawer automatically reset to top of page every time you open it. I hate opening my app drawer and starting anywhere besides the top.
Give 360 launcher a try, its kind of cool.
Then of course there's the famous 15 dollar launcher, spb shell. Looks cool, but not 15 bucks worth for a launcher.

I have to agree with you on spb. Looks nice, but there isn't that much customization in it. Like you said, definately not 15 dollars worth. I think it would lag like crazy on our device, anyways.
I tried a pirated copy of spb just becuz I wanted to make sure I'd like it before I paid that much for it and I'm glad I did becuz it definitely is not worth $15.00
In my opinion its not worth more than a couple bucks.
Its not very customizable ....I didn't notice any lag.
My opinion is adw ex is top knotch .
Only thing I'd like to see is the option to have a transparent background in the app drawer or an option to change the background with a pic
