Hi,
Not sure if I could phrase my question right (or posting in the right place) but,
I am really looking forward to getting a TF700 as my first tablet (and android!). But after stalking the infinity forum for the last month or so, I am beginning to feel that using an android tablet is quite complicated....
If anyone could just point me to a place where I can read up more about how I would go about tweaking my android device (like rooting? flashing? etc,) so that I could assess if it is too difficult for me to get the most out of the device if i purchase it, it would be very much appreciated!

Hmm,
Note taking, movies, and games! (I heard there is an emulator for the dungeon and dragon arcade game? hmm).
It is also nice that the android tablets can be customised with widgets and what not too.
First, my 3 year olds can do what you just said you need to do. You don't NEED to mod your device in order to use it for almost everything out there. After you use Android for awhile you begin to develope this sickness where you just gotta fck with your device to see what not it can do, but what you can do too. Don't fear the device. If you can manage to download an app and move files onto a removeable SD card then you already can do almost anything with the pad. Right now there is little reason to root the device. Eventually there will be custom ROMs available and at that point you may want to play around with it, but for now watching movies and playing games and doing notes and such is easily done. I have lots of kid games, coloring apps, and cartoons for my kids to watch on all my devices, and as I said they are only 3.
riightt,
I was under the impression that knowledge of how these work is required to really make the tablet awesome.
If I may ask another question,
You mentioned " Eventually there will be custom ROMs available ".
These are unique to the particular device? To utilise this, i figure i would have to learn how to "root" the device isn't it? Is the methods specific to a device too?
Pardon the ignorance, I tried searching up a little but the tide of information available is a little overwhelming :silly:

there are certain rooting methods for certain devices, as well as specific roms. if this your first tablet (or first time using an android device), i would hold off on rooting until you get a little more familiar with it. I have two daughters, 8 and 5, they took over my xoom so much, that i had to buy them their own tablets. They had no problems figuring out how to do things, from watching movies, listening to music, reading and playing games. its all quite simple. It will probably only take you a few hours to get used to the ins and outs.
I see,
I guess these methods will appear in this forum for tf700 eh. So at least when the time comes i would know where to check
I've been rooting and roming since the first android phone the G1. Now ROM availability is a huge factor for me because I know the OS inside and out where there is very little learning involved. But if you jump into a new realm and try doing crazy stuff right off you'll be in for a harsh reality. So like you said, it'all be awhile so buy the tablet and learn about it first. Sometimes it'll be exactly how you want it without having to mod at all.

Sound advice.
Thanks!
Now to wait for the tablet to be sold at where I am at...
If online purchase is an option, go for it. It may be a couple weeks before stores can stock them on the shelves. Perhaps longer depending on your location.
delivery option to my location will be quite hefty unfortunately So I will have to wait!
But news from asus states that it will arrive end july
Oh, is there a way to figure out whether a certain app require you to fiddle around with the tablet or not?

when you go to download the app from the market, the description will usually tell you if root is required.
right, thanks!

I am going to purchase a tablet ASAP. I have been waiting and looking for something to come out that is just the one, but that has not come. I waited forever for the Xoom but the price is staggering in my opinion. I have come back to the Viewsonic G Tablet for the reason that it is pretty fast and thanks to you guys the rooting seems to make it show its muscles. That being said I would like to know that this is a good purchase and that I am not making a mistake. I also would like to know about the rooting and which one works the best for this unit. Also, after being rooted how hard is it to update the system. I am a noob at these units so please understand I am just searching for answers. Oh, and can you run torrent programs on tablets?
Thanks
I guess really what you need to do is make a list of available tablets. Then base the decision on the best price point via hardware/support. I think one of the main things that makes the G-tablet shine is XDA and its developers. But as in all electronic inevitability, its only good as the people behind it. I got my G-Tablet because it was going to be one of the cheapest tablets out there, its what I could afford. Are there better ones out there, well yes and no just depends on what your going to be doing with it. Know the devices faults. Don't listen to reviews, most will give you a half-ass answers, play with the device in person if you can. Thats all I can really help with, do research make sure you get the most bang for the buck. And above all else, good luck and I hope you enjoy your future purchase, it's your decision

The only real issues I have with my GTAB is the viewing angles since I like to stream Neflix and Hulu and the sort via "Playon". It's not so good unless you have it facing you near direct
Also, the PDMI port is only for use with a dock (until someone puts out a PDMI to HDMI cable).
The great things about the GTAB is the hardware, this thing is virtually unbrickable. Believe me I have bricked it and was able to bring it back from the cold dark black screen that makes you think this thing is a goner!!
Performance is TOP NOTCH, Aside from some glitches with the custom roms its very responsive. And thanks to the Fantastic Dev-Nation we have here at XDA this thing has gotten a lot of love!
Battery life is amazing, I get 12+ hrs of use even after watching three 2 hour movies back to back to back!.
Torrents are supported, I have used "tTorrent Lite" to aquire a few things though as with most torrents speed is questionable and even more so with the tablet.
Rooting this device is very easy, "z4Root" will do it in a tap.. (Litterally)
ROM? I use VEGAn 5.1 Beta (without the 5.1.1 supplement patch)
Others here like, TnT Lite, and there are variants of CM7 floating around. Some are Officially supported and others are not.
The GTAB can be a Fantastic device provided you are willing to make the effort it takes to transform it from "Out of the Box CRAP" to the magnificant device it was meant be.
So unless you have issues with viewing angles (as many do), can aquire a dock to stream AV to an output of your choice, are frightfull of modding, then perhaps this device is not for you.
Hey I really appreciate the posts. I am not afraid to mod the device at all, as a matter of fact I find that half the reason for getting this tablet. It is going to be for fun so I am looking forward to learning more. I feel that technology is something I am always chasing and pushing into areas like this helps to keep me young in this area. I think this solves my issue and I will get my unit ordered today. I still have the question of a torrent program. That is something I heard you can do with Android.
Thanks again guys for the helpfull posts. I appreciate it very much.
DVDFab
I've said this before on another thread but if you plan on purchasing the DVDFab software with all the bells and whistles do a google search for tarzan media. I've bought it from them for less than $40 with free lifetime upgrades.
It is by far the easiest, most flexible dvd ripping/converting app I've ever used.
Edit: posted on wrong thread somehow... Sorry.
Being that you have brought up ripping......are you ripping and burning to dvd from a tablet, or what? This is a new thought being that I was not aware of an external burner plugging into the unit. Please fill me in on this or did I just misunderstand.
thanks
What if i said you could get the GTab for $300 shipped?
I was also going to wait and see how that Tablet Market plays out.
Then I heard about and posted this: Available from SearsOutlet for $279

Oops, somehow my post got in the wrong thread. But, since you asked...
No, I am not using my gTab for ripping or burning; just viewing.
I ordered mine today. I took the advice of a member and bought a used/like new in original packaging for 327. I thought that was a good price. I will be researching the ROM loading now while I wait. If any of you guys have good easy instructions or tips please feel free to post or PM me.
Thanks
I have seen some threads for kids apps. I am interested in finding/building a kids ROM.
My child has a prepaid SIM card and RAZR to be used for certain situations. I would want to be able to let my child carry the phone all the time but restrict what numbers could be called.
So my idea, which can't be an original one, is leverage Android power to install a rooted ROM but run in user mode when I give it to my child. User mode could restrict calling to the phone book only or restrict wi-fi/data access; basically anything that you wanted to restrict or remove. Maybe there could be a ROM builder.
I have many scenarios in mind but maybe they could all be solved by software apps instead of getting into a custom ROM? I'm tech savvy, but haven't ever done a ROM. If the answer is to develop a custom ROM, what device should I choose that would get the most community support? I figure it would be a low end phone, since the point is to make a children's rom.
May I ask how old is your child?
[Sig] dId you know? If you Insert a Coin on your Desire, then it levels up to HD, Z or S :[/Sig]
i was thinking of my son when you mentioned this, it is a great i dea, and i also thought if the original att kid's phone that was out a few years back. it was revamped and it sucked. but good luck on either building one or have some one make one ( put a bounty on it?)
Phones and ROMs
My child is 8 years old. I figure in a few years that it would be fine, but it seems like there would be more of a market for this.
I would put up a bounty for it but I'd prefer to make this a community effort too.
So I will change tack here and ask what the best ROM might be for me to start with and what phones might be recommended? I'm figuring that CM would be easiest to start with, generically?
Thoughts?
I think that is a very good idea.
A good part of that could be accoimplished with a kids theme on an existing ROM.
im sorry but the RAZR is a dumb-phone! it doesnt support 3rd party modding. im afraid you are mistaking the word 'ROM' and actually don't know what it means! You will have no luck finding such ROM for the RAZR... A bootloader of any sort does not exist!
You need a smartphone if you want such a job done, but it requires a investment into a smartphone which are generally more expensive and not intended for 'kids'
I understand...
@olyloh6696: Thanks for looking in on the thread!
You misunderstood what I was explaining. She _currently_ has a RAZR. I want to figure out what the best GSM _android_ phone would be to do the project I'm describing would be. I would of course have to get the new phone; I do understand that the RAZR does not support android (dumbphone).
Any thoughts on phone model or something out there like this already?

hi
well i guess the best option for a relatively cheap phone (that has android) is the zte blade (in my sig) it is a british phone, but gsm, so i think it should work in the us. if you read reviews for it, it has specs of the desire, nexus one, etc in a cheap budget range. read some revies on it! it also cost £100. Not sure what your budget is though. before you set out to buy the phone, you may need to look up a rom that supports the requirements you want, or you could request one/build your own.
good luck
Unrelated, but the RAZR does support modding lol. Back in the day, pre-Android, I used to hack the hell out of my Razr. There's even a hidden feature called Club Lights that uses the phone's microphone to detect music and make the lights on the phone go with the beat. Youtube it.
That's a great idea... it would be great on a tablet too.
I'm always worried that my son is going to click around in the market and download tons of apps without know it.
Remove Dialer.app, replace with custom Dialer.app
Is the source for the Dialer.app known, i.e. part of the main trunk of the Android sources? I was just thinking that it might not be too hard to just modify that original source to limit it only to the "contacts" tab, that way you can only call the contacts tab.
Another feature I thought of is using some kind of Dynamic DNS client to be able to dial in to the phone.
I was thinking that there could be a "phone home" app that would call home and report the currently used minutes and GPS coordinates, or similar.
Just trying to get the features set worked out and find out if there is existing apps that do this stuff.
2018, quick google search for Kids Custom ROM.... dead thread no progress. There is definitely a market for this, since it's easy to shove a phone into an OtterBox like case and let them have at it with safe guards. My kid has had an Ipad since age 2 without issue. Now she asks for my phone on occasion (years later). It would be easier to just take a custom ROM shove it on a cheap device and give it to her.
Sure, I am a minority, definitely but I can't consider myself the only person who would want to do this.
This is what I'm looking for my child. I'm a software engeneer but I've never works on Android. I think it's not a great works for an Android developer.
I'll follow this post for news.
digging this one up again. anyway to take something like at Nexux 5x and put a totally stripped down version of android on it to achieve something like the lightphone?

Per capita, there are very few people that actually root or flash custom ROMs, the number of kids that could/would use such a ROM is even less than that, this means it is not worth a developers time and hard work to build a ROM for this purpose, especially considering the plethora of different devices out there in the world. There would not be enough kids using "this" or "that" device with "this" or "that" custom ROM. To be as convenient for kids as what you are asking about, there would have to be a "kids ROM" for a large number of devices. This is not a reasonable expectation by any standard.
Add to that, the fact that rooting devices and flashing ROMs can quickly go bad if the user is not familiar with certain aspects of using a device that is rooted or flashed with a custom ROM, this makes for some rather difficult issues to solve due to user error, ignorance and inexperience of the user.
If you want a "safe" or "basic" ROM for a device, you'll have to learn how to build it yourself because I can promise you that no developer is willing to put that much time and effort into building ROMs that will only be used by a small number of users.

I wonder if anyone knows if it is possible to root and install a ROM for someone using remote access of some sort. At least maybe be able to explore the file directory or flash something even on an already rooted phone. I could see why Google may have built in something that would block this from being possible though. The only reason I ask is because there are so many times I try to help a friend on FB or twitter who is having a problem with their phone and I would LOVE to be able to help them! Most of them are somewhat technological idiots and I don't want to lose them to the dark side! We all know every brand and model of phone has it's different quirks and problems and issues Most can be easily solved with a little searching here on XDA. I'd love to be able to help a friend install an OS update or a custom ROM so they can enjoy their phone to it's fullest potential the way it's meant to be enjoyed and they won't get that phone The Borg use( I'm sure most of you will get the Star Trek reference)!
Obviously, the potential would be there for people to make money rooting people's phones remotely. I'm sure there are some people that wouldn't be happy about someone making money off an otherwise mostly free Development community and I understand that completely. I do think it would be a great way for a developer to raise money to continue their efforts and possibly bring in enough to quit their other job to devote themselves full-time or at least add a little to their income. My thoughts on that would be this: For one, at least it would be someone with a hands-on knowledge of the particular phone and various ROMS for that phone. People such as Mike's Recognized Users of his ARHD ROM would be perfect candidates for something like this. It would certainly also cut down on the overly repeated questions we all have to deal with in EVERY forum on this site. When Mike puts out a new rom there are 10+ new pages an hour, mostly repeating the same three questions, and you know what those are. If I haven't checked in a couple of days that could be HUNDREDS of posts! I am actually someone who reads as much as I can before I install anything, even a small update. Would be nice to have one post answering all the questions I would have. Repetitive questions lead to FIVE repetitive answers of "search before you post" followed by "I did" and a two page conversation about searching. Ugh!
Of course, there is also the problem of someone who is not fully adept at doing somethin like this and bricking peoples phones without recourse. For sure, it would be tough to identify a qualified person to do this but it could be possible. Now, unfortunately you would also be opening yourself up to a stranger accessing all your files and information that are on your phone. I'm not a developer by any means but I'm sure there could be an app and program created that would allow you access but block any files containing personal information.
Overall I think there would be some definite postives to something like this, as well as negatives that I'm not thinking about. Would love to hear your opinion.
Oh, and if anyone tries to steal my idea and profit by it I'm reserving all rights to the concept right now!

If you really are an IT student, you should have been told by now that a search function comes in really handy, and surprise, surprise, we have one on XDA. You could also have taken the pretty limited effort of browsing the forums and you would have stumbled upon several threads in which we commented more in-depth.
Considering you didn't make any effort at all besides typing this (in the wrong forum to boot), I can't be arsed to direct you to the threads themselves. Use the search function, and read the XDA forum policy -- it's actually one of the rules in here.
Have I already said you should use the search function?
And to be honest, not being able to do ALL your homework on a portable Android device shouldn't have come as a surprise. Do your homework next time before buying into an ecosystem and hardware.
People are expecting other people to take them by the hand more and more. I see less and less people able to fend for themselves, not only here, but in the real world, too.
Hey I am a young android enthusiast and just like many others, I love android very much. When I first heard android I was too happy with my Sanyo Incognito and I didn't care what my dad was talking about. Now many years later in, I am so overwhelmed with android.
Maybe too overwhelmed.
It has come to me that their are many cellular companies all competing for price and blah blah blah. Well this has come to the conclusion where many of us are 'throttled' by our services. This is a big problem.
If you don't have a really stubborn mind, you will get nowhere in this world and stuck all of the time. But that's not my issue.
My issue is that it is really so hard to find anything on the web for things I need, which would be simple necessities for anyone.
Like searching on how to build a android game on android; on an android, searching Google for what is the best most fastest customizable phone ever, and then looking for a budget version, searching Google on how to root a phone and then getting bumbuzzled by ads and wrong videos, and by people trying to make their living off of youtube by paying them to make there video come first and all of that.
Well I am tired of this, and I am pretty sure everyone else trying to do the same thing is tired of it (probably more tired than me, and have a much bigger headache than me)
This has slowly happened here at XDA I believe and here's why. If I look up "top phones" right now in the search bar, the first result I get will not be about that. If I look up "best customizable phone" the same thing will happen, and this will happen if I try to search up a lot of other things as well.
If that problem can be fixed and I can look up anything without going to the second page that will be amazing for all of us.
A quick note:
I am not a stubborn person, actually I am open to anything really. I am pretty sure the developer:regular android user ratio is pretty far off.
Sooooo, why not when I get on XDA their is an tutorial that is so epicly easy to understand( you'd have to be stubborn or insane) not to understand it, that bassically greets you to XDA and starts you off on the journey to learn the way of developing! Yess, I mean a tutorial that anyone can see when get on XDA and read it and reread whenever, and because its so easy and always their, anyone can become a developer by following the procedures! I believe that will get the weight off of all of you pioneer developers. :good:
Make XDA the easiest thing on the planet, then I will be able to log on to Google one day and be to a website where a bunch of people are able to help me make a game and device all for free. And what do we do after that? wow there would be nothing else to do. :cyclops:
