I'd like to use NFC more often, but there aren't too many uses that I'm aware of. Anyone know of more uses?
Just look at the way it's being implemented in ICS. NFC is still a relatively new tech in cell phones, it probably won't be widespread for at least the better part of 2012.

Here is a comparison chart for three RT tablets (not the full windows version).
Some info is still missing either because the information has not been released publicly yet or I cannot find the info. If anyone knows the missing info let me know.
Anyway, from doing this chart it seems that the Asus Vivo RT Tab could be the best. Reasons being is that it is thinner, lighter, faster CPU, better camera, better screen technology etc. To me, these are all positives.
What do you guys think?
The information may be mismatch because there are not fully details about the Microsoft Surface. Correct me if I am wrong.
All RT tabs will be 1366x768 or better, since that's the minimum res for using Metro. In the same vein, I doubt if any RT tab will pack less than 2GB RAM, and they'll all have BT/etc.
The main attraction of Surface RT is its innovative Touch/Type Cover. That allows the device to maintain a tablet's portability, but with a laptop's functionality. Note that the Touch/Type Cover is unique in that it has a built-in trackpad. No other "keyboard cover" has that.
I also like the fact that MS prominently played up the 2x2 MIMO wifi antenna. Wifi performance is the main bottleneck for all mobile devices, as most tablets have abysmal antenna design. People obsess over trivial things like how many MP the cam has, or the stupid Quadrant bench, but they ignore the factors that really matter.
All these are academic, however, since the clinching factor, PRICE, isn't known yet for any of these.
And lastly, none of these will sell well, regardless of what specs they have (not unless MS decides to do the $199 deal). Windows RT for this iteration isn't ready for consumers--no apps, and Office is still in Preview. It's strictly a tinkerer/early adopter's province.

Thanks for the information, anyways I think it's better to rely on Microsoft Surface since it will have better support than other companies I know...... (long story)

what do you mean by support?
Read up on the Asus Prime and Asus Infinity boards and you will see some of their quality issues. You will have a hard time finding that from Samsung and Microsoft has a lot at stake to make this great.

Asus has serious QC issues with all their tablets, as others have indicated. I also think there's something to be said about the hardware manufacturer and software manufacturer relationship. Microsoft will spec everything to make sure it matches perfectly, just like Apple and Google(The Asus Nexus 7). There are boatloads of android tablets out there that don't run Android very well (Asus being one on their privately branded tablets).
I'm sure if anyone would be able to answer this however, on air planes they have USB ports, if you plug in your tablet, will it draw enough power to charge your tablet?
thanks

OK, hardware support. yes, its a much more expensive type of support than software. I've seen xbox returned for issues, Microsoft mice, keyboards, iLads, iPhones, radios, every type of consumer electronics made.
if you are suggesting there will be no defects or failures, hmmm, that's an interesting line of thinking.

Asus tablets have been plagued with issues to the point where Amazon UK pulled their flagship infinity from its stores! Light bleed, and screen separation issues on a 500 quid tablet is a joke.
Also cheap wifi chips meaning no Dual band and cheap flash memory meaning IO issues. You won't get these problems from companies like Samsung due to their already strong relationships with chip makers such as Broadcom for wifi ect..
I will stick with a Samsung Tab tbh. I really wanted to buy the transformer infinity recently but all the issues put me off, so I am holding out for an ATIV SmartPC or SmartPC Pro
yeah im with the above now. I didn't want an infinity because of all the probs I've been reading so I was going to wait for the vivo.
now i have to research a bit more for a new win 8 tab

No GPS? What are they thinking. How does the mapping work then if not on wi-fi?
Please tell me this has been updated
No Gps, No Nfc, 5pt Multitouch...OMG!!! Why Microsoft!
If you live near micro center they have pre order up for Asus vivo tab rt for 499 which is cheaper than other retailers from what I know.

yep looks like they just dropped the price. Im sure other retailers will be doing the same.
TBH, this is tablet, why on earth would you need more then 5pt multitouch??
Also why would you need GPS? Most people getting these tablets have smartphones which do gps, who wants to hold up a tablet and walk around using navigation software?? Maps will allow you to check a route and find your way even without GPS
I've read in several reviews that this device has an IR emitter to control your TV or other equipment, yet none of the reviewers demonstrate that.
Asus' own page mentions an IR sensor, but without explanation what it would sense.
Finally, one youtube review mentions a built-in TV receiver, but doesn't demonstrate it.
What hardware does the device actually have built-in? It's fine even if it's nothing from above, I just wish to know.

In response: It appears that the device has an IR sensor that is used for the camera functionality but no mention as to whether it can be used as IR Blaster as we know. Secondly, as far as I am concerned there is no built-in TV receiver in this device and none of the specs refer to this. Also, sadly, this device does not have a NFC chip, which is really annoying in this day and age. All this device needs given what it can do is: Independent Dual Sim + MicroSD Slot, IR Blaster and NFC Reader. Lets see if any other major brand or Chinese name will learn and get the next iteration right.

Hi everyone i want to ask if there is a possibility of adding IR feature to Samsung S8 coming in 2017.
IR Blaster is very useful feature of android, i normally use this with my Canon 6D Dslr and secondary for TVs in hotels bars or conference rooms where staff hide the remote controls.
if it is not possible i will have to change to LG
i have sent an email to Samsung headoffice in Korea and also i wrote to president of South Korea Park Geun-hye. I requested her to have a look at Samsung's policy of adding/removing features from Samsung. I also requested her to force Samsung in adding Dual-sim to its flag ship phones, Samsung already have this feature in low end phones just need an extra bay in flag ship phones.
I just hope we will get back IR-blaster in upcoming Galaxy S8.

One person will not influence whether Samsung adds back the IR blaster..
Good luck, but I highly doubt they'll re-add the feature. They probably determined not enough people were using it to make it worthwhile

I agree it's a useful feature to have. Certainly more so than a heart rate Monitor!
I think manufacturers will increasingly leave it out, unfortunately in order to spec the latest and greatest ueber processors which no-one fully utilises anyhow.
I owned the s6 and s6 edge ....probably only used the feature once....I gave the s6 edge to my wife and she's never used it the feature (don't even think she knows it's there. I own the s7 now and really never miss the IR blaster feature...again this is just my input!

Sammy won't release it for sure I think
Contacting them is of no use at all. They will not even bother
I own s5 and IR blaster works beautifully
It would be really nice if Sammy releases IR blaster in S8. If they release it I would go for it
If not I will stick to s5
It was a feature
I would love to see the S8 made of materials meant to withstand a drop or 2, also the IR blaster was a nice feature. Why they can't make the phone as it was before just faster and smarter?
The features we all liked, removable battery, SD Card, IR blaster and waterproof was all achieved on the S5. "Premium feel" is for hipsters since 99% of the people puts a cover on their smartphones... so where is the premium feel? Making the S6 back of glass and repeat it on the S7 was the stupidest thing they did. They actually downgraded to the Iphone4 quality which everyone knew was a flawed design. The only people that criticized the impact plastic that the Sammy phones where made of where the ones that did not have one, I loved the fact that I have to only worry about the phone falling on its screen.
They learned about not taking out the SD card, I hope they learn about the rest after losing a lot of clients to LG, which still makes smartphones the smart way. Even do I love Samsung I feel very aggravated with their changes (not all of them, but most of them).
I want the IR blaster back!
On my S5 i ditched every remote i had to use my all-in-one phone remote Then when i got my S7 edge i installed my IR app, copied the remotes config over and *#[email protected], no IR blaster! I now have six remotes around my room and they always disappear. My phone never went missing like they do.
Im kinda hoping they bring IR back since they are meant be ditching the headphone port. Although my car has bluetooth for phone calls but not for music streaming so how how do i plug in my aux lead to my phone after the port goes? :/ Headphone ports are still needed. I dont want to pay 100 quid to replace something i already have! We arent Apple!!
*crosses fingers for IR and headphone to exist in S8
well offtopic but eventually i will sell my s7 some day... but i cant say the same for my note4
I want it back again too. and is not impossible, since Samsung give us back removable storage and water proofing.

I wanted keep my S5 as an all in one remote but i accidently toasted it when i set it up for BOINC. My IR went with it
I have recently set up an RPi for home automation (LEDs around my room and cooling fans for my PS). This has a web frontend so i might make a web remote and add an IR blaster to my RPi instead!
I wanted an S6 until I found out about the non-removable battery and the lack of an mSD slot. Then I wanted an S7 until I found out about the lack of the IR blaster. I'm not sure why they think making their phones shinier makes them better.
My S5 is a great phone. I use the IR blaster all the time with AnyMote, and it's not a feature I'm willing to give up. I'd definitely give up Samsung first. MicroSD slots are mandatory. IR Blasters, for me, also mandatory.
Well, technically S8 have a lot of IR stuff...proximity sensor, iris scanner, hertbeat sensor, face scanner(and almost all of them are in the front, so theoretically this can increase the frequency a lot if done right)...but i havent seen anyone make use of them to make an ir blaster unfortunately...

To control them in any way that you suggest would require the drivers for them to be rewritten. They were never designed to be used in the way you want so the existing drivers won't provide the functionality for the software to control them in that way. They will be proprietary devices too so the task of reverse engineering it would take considerable time. Thats why no-one has bothered because there's too much effort and too little reward.
Hi. Apparently I have very high demands for a new small tablet, because I can't really find anything that suit my needs, but I would like to know if I missed something.
What I'm looking for is:
7-9 inches
USB-C connector
On-screen navigation keys (not hardware like Samsung for instance)
Good root/toolkit/ROM support
So far I'm coming up short. The ASUS ZenPad 3 8.0 (Z581KL) is totally perfect and cool, except for virtually no root and ROM support as far as I can see.
Am I missing something, or is my wishlist simply not possible to fulfill so far? I realize that if I don't care about either USB-C or on-sceen navigation I can perhaps get something, but I really think these features should be standard on tablets today.
Any suggestions are very welcome. Thanks
