CWM Recovery - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hi I recently unlocked the bootloader and rooted (oneclick method) my HTC One X on rogers. I want to install CWM recovery, but I have heard it is unstable on the One X? If it's not, can I just download rom manager(premium) and flash the recovery through there? Or let me know a way I could install it. Thanks

I'd suggest using TWRP instead of CWM, CWM randomly wipes your SD from time to time.
To install TWRP, download the goo.im app from the play store and let it find a compatible recovery for your device. It will reboot and TWRP will be installed.

My advice would be to stick with the recovery installs methods that are in our specific forum. Just head to my index thread and look under "Recovery".

CWM does not officially support our device, its just a port. Because of this, I don't even know if ROM Manager will let you install it.
More importantly, CWM is known to cause some serious issues for some people while flashing ROMs. Some (most?) of the devs don't advise using CWM. TWRP officially supports our device, and is the way to go.

I've just had an instance of random files being erased or corrupted, this time it was on TWRP. I also had it happen on CWM a while back before I switched to TWRP, but neither recovery seems free of this bug (and may not be solely recovery's fault?). I've seen at least a few others have had SD contents corrupted by TWRP. Maybe its more common on CWM, but its probably hard to say.
I haven't had the instance of the entire SD card being wiped, so this may be a CWM exclusive thing, I can't say at all.
Moral of the story, before flashing anything, whether on CWM or TWRP, backup to your computer any contents of the SD that are not easily replaced. In particular, Titanium Backup folder, and any personal photos.
Also, aside from the SD wipe issue, CWM is known to cause some major problems when flashing some ROMs, so best to stay away from it.

Does TWRP work the same as CWM. Also does it have all the same features as CWM? Thanks

I've been using clock work since its been available for the One X & personaly never had a single issue. You however can't flash CW through Rom manager.
Try this worked perfect for me.

Rom not installing

Hi I am a follower of LeeDroid on Sensation and thus far have always been able to find the answers to my questions without any issues. But now I am starting to dabble with root on Xoom. Needless to say I had a LOT of issues as it's not nearly as straight forward as my Sensation. I resolved most of my issues and am finally ready to install Team Tiamat's rom. Reboot into recovery, choose the zip and it freezes on Unpacking New Files.... I've been at this all night and really would like to go to bed knowing that it's installed and I can mess with it tomorrow. Any ideas?
Thanks so much for the anticipated help!
Like what excatly is happening? You do have the CWM recovery flashed to the recovery partition, right? What have you've done so far? What guide you've followed thus far?
Pretty much rooting the XOOM is pretty straight forward, unlock the bootloader (adb reboot bootloader, fastboot oem unlock, on xoom press volume down then up and repeat once to unlock), boot back into the bootloader and flash the recovery (adb reboot bootloader, fastboot flash recovery recovery_image_name.img, fastboot reboot), then reboot into the recovery and flash either the root files or the ROM you want to use.
^^^
Totally agree. Once custom recovery is installed flashing rom is same as with other devices:
Boot into recovery.
wipe data/reset
install zip
choose zip file
Done
................
Avoid flashing through rom manager.
You need to have custom recovery tailored for Xoom (not what is available through rom manager)
.................
The rooting process is done and I also have already flashed cwm. The problem is when I go into cwm through recovery and attempt to load the tiamat rom it freezes at the step "unpacking new files"....

please check the md5 checksum (given from where you downloaded tiamat).
also flashing takes some time.
do not inturrupt.
Yesterday i flashed it and it took some time(even i thought it is doing nothing).
But it flashed ok.

Great minds and all that!
Hehe...
BTW I have flashed international stock version over US MZ604.
It has last update of 3.1 with micro sd support.
It gives a choice of what to mount(internal or sd card)
2 extra wallpaper also there.
Let's see how it performs.
Are you using the correct version of the recovery? This seems to be a common mistake made by quite a few people. You need to be using this version and loading the ROMs and kernels to a Microsd card. "Newer" versions do not use the microsd card so you would be flashing from the same internal memory that you are trying to flash over.

What he said, read the pre-requisites very carefully on the ROM page. Also what ROM are you trying to download and what version of honeycomb are you currently running? What xoom? Wifi or 3g?
I was finally able to get it done. The issue it turns out was my own impatience coming out. I just had to be patient and eventually it installed.
Thanks for all the help everyone!!!

I'm glad it worked. I know what you mean about being impatient...sometimes it seems like nothings happening and in fact, you just need to hang in a little longer.

[Q] First Time Root Help Please?

Hello everyone,
I just bought a Verizon Galaxy S3 and I am in the process of rooting it. Im kinda freaking out because things really arent going that well for me. So far what I've done is root and unlock bootloader. Here is where the problem starts. When I try to reboot into CWM recovery it just boots me into the normal android recovery. Is this normal? every video I have watched shows people manually rebooting straight into CWM. The only way I can get it to work is if I go into EZ recovery and press "Flash" then "Reboot Into Recovery" buttons.
My second area of confusion is regarding the IMEI backup. Is this something everyone does when flashing roms on this phone? I am very confused as to what I'm supposed to do. Do I use the adb or download a terminal app from the play store? If someone could clarify that would be great !
Sorry if these questions are pathetic but this is my first time doing this and it's a learning experience I geuss. Here are the links to the guides I used for what I have done so far.

I recently saw someone have a problem getting custom recovery persist, and another member pointed out a step you needed to do to get it to stick. I'll see if I can locate that post and add it to this post.
As far as IMEI goes, you only need to back it up once, and then you are good to go. Perform step a followed by step b in the backup thread.

Alright thanks, so for most people once they flash it once it should stay every time they reboot into recovery? I have probably the noobiest question of all time, what does flashing CWM recovery even do? is it like flashing a rom where it just gets baked in to the OS permanently? Or does it actually provide a backup of data because I thought thats what nandroids were for.
Havent found exactly what I was recalling as far as the recovery problem, but I found something in a thread below this that makes me think maybe your bootloader wasnt unlocked properly. What version (if any) of ez recovery did you use?
Also, flashing CWM (ideally, at least) replaces the stock recovery with the clockworkmod recovery. Then, when you boot into CWM, that is where you make a backup (nandroid) of your current ROM. Once you have backups made you can quickly switch between ROMs by restoring the nandroids.
I hope I understood your question correctly and also answered it properly.

Yes you did, thank you so much. In the tutorial I used it was saying that the newer versions of EZ unlock were having problems so I downloaded version 1.2. How do I proceed if my bootloader was unlocked improperly? Also, I went in to EZ recovery and flashed CWM and made a nandroid backup if this matters.
Thanks so much for your help.
If you used version 1.2 then my point was moot. So you can only get into CWM if you install CWM from ez recovery and then hit reboot into recovery? If you do the hold vol up + home button while powering on it always takes you to stock recovery?
Yep its very weird. Not sure what to do.
Someone else will likely be able to chime in on how to correct this, unfortunately (or fortunately? lol) it hasnt happened to me so I havent had to deal with it. Its not a huge deal so I wouldnt worry about it.
Personally I use TWRP recovery. You can try that and see if it will stick, you can always go back to CWM later. Try it in ez recovery, or Goo manager from the play store (I use goo manager). If you want to try installing it from goo manager, install the app, hit menu, then select install open recovery script.
K cool. So would it hurt me if I just used ez recovery to flash and reboot everytime I need to get into CWM? Also for goo manager does that install the one you were talking about or CWM?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Goo manager is only for TWRP recovery. And as long as the backups are being stored and you can access them the next time you get into CWM, it doesnt matter. Like I said, hopefully someone will be able to tell you how to correct this issue and we will both learn a thing or two from it.
Did you follow Step 12 in Section 2 in the first link you posted?
You have to make sure to go to CWM v6.0.1 in the drop down and install that version of Clockwork Mod Recovery.
I'm not sure if that's the cause of your issue, but you may want to check into that
Yep i did that

How to Switch from TWRP to ClockWorkMod?

Hello, I'm needing a bit of advice on what to do when switching from my current recovry, TWRP, to ClockWorkMod. I do realize that some say it was never ported over right to the One X, but I'm needing to use it to test a theme for a dev that uses Universal Flasher. I'm pretty sure I can just go into the CWM app and click "Install CWM" but I'd like to make sure I don't corrupt my recovery If anyone could help me that'd be great!
*Edit* Whoops, I didn't realize that the One X was not officially supported. So seeing that, could I just flash the CWM recovery.zip in TWRP and then again once I'm in CWM to make sure it sticks?
The theme is here if you'd like to take a look- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1843805

Yes, but could you please elaborate on that? I understand people think it was never properly ported to our phone, but I'm needing to use it to test a theme for a dev. The only reason I'm wanting to use CWM is that his theme uses Universal Flasher, which isn't supported by TWRP.

sure you can overwrite twrp by flashing cwm, but why would that theme only be flashable through universal flasher ??
if you're gonna go to cwm better make a nand backup and a full backup of your sd and pull all of it onto your computer. CWM on hox has some unpredictable reactions.
Here's your answer : you don't want to ..If u want I will laugh when u accidently f up and sd card gets wiped and u can't mount and have to reflash twrp

I actually found in the CWM forum for the One X that one guy who has an AT&T version of the One X, like me, tried using CWM and erased EVERYTHING on the phone rendering it useless. I'm really hesitant with this now. I'll contact the dev and see if he can somehow make it work on TWRP (doubt it, but it's worth a shot)
And the international cwm is mot for us that's for endeavor you'd have to dig up a old thread somewhere in this forum ..but don't install the one from Rom manager

let me repeat what i said earlier: if you cannot be talked out of it. just make a nand backup and a full sd backup and pull it on your computer, that way if something happens you can just restore everything, just seems like a lot of work to test a theme, must be some THEME
I pm'd the dev of that theme he said flash cwm to flash theme then just flash back twrp. Im about to do it soon to flash the theme. Id backup sdcard first though.

Making my own recovery

I am successfully rooted (thanks Hasoon2000 and everyone else who makes it possible) but I have a couple more questions.
1. I tried flashing my own recovery but I can't find it? I used Hasoon's toolkit. I used (Your Own Recovery). It went into bootloader screen and then rebooted. Could I have done something wrong? I'd like to make sure I have a recovery.
2. Could someone explain APK installer? I know it's for backing up things but isn't that what Titanium Backup is (Google Play)?
3. Could I please get a quick guide on ways to learn Superuser? I installed it, it's there but I don't want to mess with something I'm not 100% familiar with. I hate searching on the Internet for things sometimes. Too much misinformation!
Thank you all very much for being patient with a NOOB!
Jon
You made a recovery? Just install twrp through fastboot...
---------- Post added at 03:10 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:07 AM ----------
Backing up apps is titaniums smallest pro ...it backs up your app data and you can freeze and mess with system apps it.does much more than just backing up...and for superuser if you have att you should already have root privileges...if you have a non att one xl you'll have to flash a recovery than flash root but it.sounds like you're on att.... Superuser grants you root rights
---------- Post added at 03:11 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:10 AM ----------
Google will give you more info than anyone here
Yes I was in twrp already as per the video and instructions. I think I'm a bit confused still on .IMG backup. I tried flashing one, it went through the reboot and then that was it. Maybe I'm getting confused on flashing recoveries.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
If you haven't already I recommend flashing twrp in the same toolkit. if your phone acts strangely and you back your phone up with stock rooted you can flash back to your normal stock rooted and then wipe and install another rom from their. All Superuser is (anyone correct me if I don't get the basic stuff right) is a program that grants specific rights to apps that require root access. Then get perm rooted if you have not already flash superuser and then perm root in the toolkit or install it (SU)in Google play. To check if you are rooted install root checker off Google play then superuser should come up and you can grant it access... Hope I helped someone who views this thread. If so click thanks
Now if you want to flash a rom and you have a HTC one xl version of 2.20 you have to drag the rom you installed to your computer desktop, extract boot img and drag that to your phone( plug phone in via usb and mount phone to computer should come up) Do NOT do this in recovery as it will wipe your stuff..) then install the full rom with the same process. The 2 easiest roms to install I think are cleanrom (wipe phone and install, boot img is in installer land and their are directions I think and viper one xl (installer does everything for you) if and only IF your phone is not the international version one x. (quad core) is the non international version is dual core. Make sure your phone is dual core in these forums. (HTC one xl).. Have fun p.s before flashing another rom a full wipe and clean cache and dalvik is recommended. Only on roms that require a wipe before flashing, flashing roms is easy you just have to READ.
Thanks for all the info. I appreciate it. So what I did was flash my own recovery (already did twrp). Phone was ready to use. Then I flashed my own recovery. But I didn't see where that recovery went. That's moronically my problem. Hahaha. Yes. I'm certainly in the right forum. Att HOX, dual core. I am just rooted right now, haven't done a Rom yet.
Sorry for sounding like a dope.

Lol that's what I was wondering...I don't think (no offense to op) but has the skills I mean neither do I and a huge percent of xda to make a recovery by themselves I think he just means twrp
Again, I'm obviously confused. I thought a recovery was in case there was a bad malfunction and I needed to wipe everything and reinstall a backup. Like an image for a computer or simply reloading the OS. Yes, I'm a novice noob at this. Nothing compared to jailbreaking an iPhone. That was as easy as breathing.

Recovery = TWRP
Backup = In case of malfunction
Recovery aka TWRP is where you flash your roms. You need to read a bit more before you mess your phone up. DO NOT FLASH INTERNATIONAL HTC ONE X ROMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your phone will be a paperweight
If you want some more help send me a private message with your gtalk
Haha... No its easier then you think it is.. If you know how to get to recovery (twrp)from bootloader you can make backups in twrp and it will make backups of your phone for you.. And you can name them If you want. If you don't know how to get into recovery from bootloader itself.. Hold down Power and volume down until the capacative buttons stop flashing( 3 buttons that are lit) and then hold vol down until you see htc men on skateboards, and then go to recovery from their.. Then their should be back up option and restore and install. Etc.. Do not touch mount as you can drag roms to your phone just by connecting it via usb.. But before you do ANYTHING backup your current stock rooted so you have something to fall back on..
Backup!!! That was the word I was thinking of and I can't imagine why I couldn't think of the word. Yes. So I can go into twrp and make a backup of my current rooted phone there. Then I can save it to my computer in the data file I used to unlock/root.
Yes I do know how to get into recovery. I can use the tool to go to bootloader screen or do the hardware button method. I've gotten pretty good at it with all the snags I ran in to during the unlocking/rooting procedure.
I would like to say I wish to remain stock rooted for now. I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I would take the cool plunge in to flashing Roms. That seems like the harder part.
Thanks for all the replies and explanations!

CWM/TWRP "Can't Mount"

I am having issues flashing a custom ROM to my d2vzw. I originally followed the directions on the CM wiki for putting CM onto my phone. CWM would give me errors about not being able to mount my SD card, which meant that I couldn't download the ROM. However, in a previous thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516163), I was told to start the rooting and flashing process over again. I ODINed back to a stock, pre-rooted ROM and then unlocked my bootloader with EZ-Unlock 1.2. I tried to download TWRP from GooManager, but it said it couldn't find any compatible recoveries when I went to Install OpenRecoveryScript from the menu. I instead flashed TWRP 2.6.3.0 via ODIN, but it gives me the same errors. It is also worth noting TWRP 2.6.3.0 asks me for a password when I boot into recovery, but the modded one did not. At one point, I downloaded a modded TWRP that turned out to be for Sprint GS3s (so it wouldn't let me download CM), but it did not give me the same errors (can't mount SD card, etc.). I have since put TWRP 2.6.3.0 back on the phone and get the can't mount errors again. Today, after a few weeks of inactivity, I went into GooManager and tried Install OpenRecoveryScript again. This time, it said that TWRP 2.6.3.1 was available, so I tried to download it and got an Invalid MD5 Sum error. It is also important to note that my SD card is formatted to FAT-32 (I could try to format it again in case there is an issue with the SD card). I am currently using a brand new SanDisk 8GB SD card (which I bought specifically to ensure that the issue was not with my SD card), which I formatted to FAT-32 after I got the Can't Mount errors. Even after formatting to FAT-32, I still get the errors. Any idea what is going on?
EDIT: I just read that the issue may be with data encryption. As far as I know, I never encrypted my data, but for some reason, the password screen on TWRP shows up.
Bump.

Not really sure what the deal was really, but I haven't changed recoveries since and I've had no issues flashing any roms. The only thing I can think of is the phone is a new upgrade, so maybe something different in the hardware... Glad it worked for you!
