Since I attached the dock I now feel like its a under powered over priced netbook, Is this what it really is?
For 200 BUCKS I could have a windows powered netbook that is more usable.

1st, sorry for my poor Eng, i'm not an Eng speaker.
Then why don't you just buy a Windows netbook and forget about the tablet?
Do your netbook have the touchscreen? And if it have, can it work smoothly like on android device?
Can you just take your netbook's LCD out and rotate it portrait to read?
All about here is about a tablet with a keyboard docking station not a netbook which you can't take the LCD out.
One more thing, you can just forget about the dock if you just want to use it as a tablet.
To OP,
seriously if you really think that then you have totally missed the point of the device. Its so much more that an overpriced underpowered netbook.
this post smells of troll.
sorry.
Technically the CPU and GPU is faster than that of a netbook with longer battery life as well.

do netbooks have an ips display that's at least as good as the ipad screen?
I don't own a netbook, but I have used a few of them before, and none of them have a comparable battery life and performance. Flash even runs better on the transformer than some of the netbooks i've used before.
Also, android is much better than windows
im assuming that OP is trolling but .....
I bought a tablet - an Android tablet with a great spec.
However a tablet on its own isnt really enough for day to day use. Thats where the keyboard fits in.
Its not a case that the transformer is 'just' an overpriced netbook its more a case that for the money you are getting an 'iPad' AND a 'netbook' all rolled into one.
Then add in ... Kindle, iPod, Media viewer and its a great 'all in one' ......
That was my logic anyway ....

Well stated wilbur-force. Pretty close to my thinking also. Docked TFs, to me, are an "extra benefit". I bought primarily for the eclectic uses of a "tablet". Portability formost. And the opportunity to learn a new OS..android. Admittedly, am looking forward to getting one of the projected desktop docks though.

Then go and exchange your TF for a netbook and leave all of us who are happy with the purchase (and did some research before making stupid comparisons) alone.

yep - ill be keeping an eye out for when the desktop docks appear.
Long train journey yesterday. Used my TF dockless to watch a movie and play a little RoboDefense and then the keyboard was snapped on to write a speech for a Junior football presentation while listening to music. Dropboxed the doc to my home PC and the missus had it printed off for me by the time i got home plus i was using my HTC Desire as a wifi hotspot to browse the web PLUS the TF was charging my phone at the same time ...... its a great piece of kit !
A $200 dollar netbook won't get you the same performance.

I am on the fence on whether to buy this tablet or keep my recently acquired galaxy tab (woot deal). So, I appreciate the different perspectives. I can then decide whether the posts are valid to me and if not I'm certainly not going to criticize the individual for sharing insight.
For the record, I'm not flaming you but ask yourself "Why read the OP's post if it is going to be upsetting to you?".

Is a 200 dollar netbook more "usable" ? If you could tell me what a 200 dollar windows powered netbook could do better than the transformer, i'd gladly discuss with you the merits of your assertion. Let me start with two thing thats it can't do: video encoding, and playing select pc games. I would never try to convert video on a crappy netbook as it would take forever, nor would i try to play any worthwhile game on a netbook especially a 200 dollar one with integrated graphics and 10 inch screen. Your turn!

To each their own. For my daily use this tablet is great, the keyboard dock allows me to actually use it as a produtivity device and not just for entertainment. I travel frequently for work, with this I can leave my laptop at home 90% of the time. As to the comment about it being under powered I have to disagree, it has more than enough power to run Android like a champ. I was listening to a podcast in the browser and jumping between Touchdown, Pulse and multiple browser tabs, pretty much exactly what I use my laptop for most of the time and it never skipped a beat. Sure it would be on the underpowered side if you installed an OS like Windows, but that's why you're not running Windows on it. I've been with Android since the beginning (have an old beat up G1 to prove it) so I already have a pretty significant investment in the Marketplace, because of that and Android tablet just makes sense for me.

You do know you can remove the tablet from the dock, right?
Hi all
I want to buy a bigscreen
And i am confused, what to buy tablet or ipad???
And if tablet then which one??
Tablet that i can carry easily and which have good specifications, hardware, and good dev support..
Pls guide me!
You do know people will say anything other than iPad, but for an android tablet here we go
10.1 inches: Asus transformer series, Acer tablets, galaxy tab 2 or galaxy note 10.1.
7 inches: galaxy tab 7 inch, nexus 7
I don't know the real specs, but these are the tablets I would choose.

Thanks for the reply..
Galaxy tab 2 7 inch..is this tablet worth buying,i mean will it get dev support??
I would never buy a crapple product as long as long i am breathing but it is true that the ipad has a large collection of tablet optimised apps but on the other side is completely locked down and if u have a symbian/android phone u will want to throw the ipad away after one hour or jailbreak it.
But we have to root android too!!!
I mean in what way everyone says that android can be customized and apple not..apple has cydia!!
Galaxy Tab 10.1
We just rolled out the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to a bunch of homecare/healthcare workers so I had a good chance to play with them, and would highly recommend it. The screen size was just about perfect, it felt comfortable and sturdy in the hands and the speed seemed very snappy, even with just the stock Android and no modifications.
I would expect that support from the Dev community will be in abundance and should continue for a long time to come.

Cydia doesn't do nearly as much as Android out of the box. Right now, iOS has no way of getting widgets, and I think that is a very important part of Android.
If you want size, the 10.1 inch tablets are actually bigger than the iPad (at 9.7), but the 7 inch tablets are much more portable.
Rooting Android is NOT the same as jailbreaking, and not even close to the same in meaning. So you cannot say "we root, they jailbreak"

iPads aren't tablets. Tablets can actually do simple things like download files off the internet, or offload your camera pictures without retarded dongles or "the cloud"
An iPad is nothing more than a toy. There's no way people can actually be productive on one, not when it's so locked down into that ecosystem. If I create a document on a tablet, I want to be able to throw it on a thumbstick and put it on someone elses computer without internet, or attaching the tablet to another computer (the latter I don't even think is possible on the iPad because you have to use iTunes to transfer files). I mean, why relearn something as stupid as transferring a file, when the best method (drag and drop) has been around forever??
The lack of a user accessible file system is a deal breaker for me.

Android
I definitely prefer android over the ipad. I agree that the ipad is nothing more than just a toy. The imac pro i have is an amazing computer that allows me to do graphic design here locally with two 20 inch screens i can use the adobe cs software and it will pay for itself.
I took my ipad back and purchased a quad core transformer prime. To say the least it is amazing bar none. I usually can go a day or so with full use at work and home without charging, the best part about it is the keyboard connection, it comes with a backup battery that powers and charges your asus transformer tablet. so just incase you fail to charge it that night it should still be able to get ya through the day and get your emails sent out in time so when you make it back home you can charge it then. I definitely recommend it...
On another note, you can also look into the MK802 by android, it is an android computer a bit bigger than a flash drive it comes with one USB port, a micro USB, mini HDMI so you can make your tv your personal android the micro USB has a connector inside the box that allows you to have 2 full USB ports along with a micro sd card slot. plug it into your surge protector, you know that one last port you have available on the surge protector, . and plug it into your tv via HDMI and since it has a built in b/g you can connect to your wifi and browse on your now smart TV. Definitely worth the 74 dollar price tag.
Whatever you shall choose to best suit your need; I am wishing you the best.
well depends for simplicty i would recommend a ipad as you can do facetime and theres good accassibility support, but if you like custormizing the your tablets then go for a google tablet as ipads are quite restricted
Thanks for your replies
Personally I would go win win8pro. Where u can actually use it to root or jailbreak ur android and ipad.
But it expensive, have a fan, and ****ty battery life.
For good developer support. U can't go wrong with having a nexus.
For bigger, I like the transformer. Really really like it.But I hear it doesn't come with an unlockable bootloader. So one of those ipad/ios looking, plasticity sammy should be good

I was looking at the asus transformer infinity tf700. can you install windows 8 on these?
the reason I say the infinity is because all the recent reviews say it's the best android talbet out atm. kinda like the galaxy note 2 for specs. it will be the best android phone specs atm.
this is totally disregarding prices, just what's best.
it looks like the infinity came out in the UK 3 days ago. is this true?
is it recommended to wait until end of october 2012 for a win 8 tablet, or will it not be as spec happy as the infinity? I will use it mainly for movies web etc.
I keep up to date on the samsung phones and I'm always anxiously waiting for the galaxy's coming out. is anyone up to date on the aus tablets, as it appears they dominate the tablet market (I'm obviously anti apple). if I'm wrong please infrom what tablets are best atm.
this entire wall and my requirements could change if someone tells me you can't install win 8 on an android tablet. then I'm done here.
:good:
wait for the surface pro > its gonna be expensive but its gonna be awesome. I wholeheartedly recommend a phablet in place of a tablet though i never thought a phablet would be actually ergonomical until i got mine. and its the best of both worlds .
I watched some clips of the surface pro and thought sweet, but then I saw the seminar of it and I was like -_- that prick in the blue jumper. script galore. it cashed once or twice, at one stage he was like 'I can smoothly bring down the menu bar' or something, and he's swiping it like 5 times then basically moves on because it wouldn't swipe down and open.. I just found it extremely annoying to watch rofl...
I don't want to support it, I know I'll be supporting them in the end with a win 8 tablet, but I don't want to support then much more than that.

Amazon has accpeted to refund my Transformer Prime. Now I am wondering if I should replace it with the Infinity (in that case, I won't send my keyboard dock) or the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. I have read about some issues that people were having with the infinity such as problems with the screen, hardware problems or lagginess even with Jelly Bean. I was wondering if these problems are generalized like the problem with the Prime or if they are isolated cases. Would you get an Infinity again if you could go back and choose?

I would get a note 10.1 personally. The TF700 suffers from lag because it uses a slow nand chip. The note 10.1 uses a fast nand chip and there are no major flaws with it.
Would you rather have a higher resolution screen that lags & has quality control issues or a lower resolution screen that's fast?
Just got my tf700 after returning the prime a while back. Make your decision based on what you use the tablet for. I use the keyboard quite a bit and therefore would go with Asus. If you tinker/flash like me, Sammy is a good choice plus their stylus tech is pretty solid. (I own a Galaxy Nexus and an Infuse before that)
Barry is right, these threads often biased depending on the sub-forum. Google some reviews for both tabs and compare their features.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using XDA Premium HD app
The best way to decide (if possible) is to go to a store and play around with both of them.
The "slow Nand" issue is *way* overblown, in my opinion - most users would never even notice the problem. Honestly, the *only* time that I see any sort of lag or slowdown is when updating/installing apps, which can be done when the user decides (like when you don't need to do other things) - besides, how often are you actually install/updating apps while trying to do other things? Honestly, the issue is not nearly as bad as some would make you believe.
As another user already started, if you are going to do a lot of typing and want a FHD screen, the choice is rather obvious. If you actually have a real-world use for the S-Pen, then the Note 10.1 would be the obvious choice.
But again, do yourself a favor and go and try both devices for yourself - most of the stuff you read on these forums is very biased and most of these folks haven't even used both devices, so to get a true representation of the differences between both devices, you'll need to try then for yourself.
I will say this - since the JB upgrade, my TF700 absolutely flies - it is not "laggy" or slow at all - it runs *very* well. After a few small tweaks, even the stock browser is amazingly fast.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
You can use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with any of these devices. If you need a stand alone USB port on the TF700, ASUS makes one. I don't think the ASUS keyboard is reason to select the Infinity over something else.
I think the prime is very good hardware wise. I love the screen. This screen should be on every phone and laptop.
I think JB will be faster once someone gets all the bugs out and replaces some of the molasses with the butter they promised.
Here is a good review of the Infinity. AFAICT, the only thing it lags hardware wise is the iPad 3.

True, but a bluetooth keyboard and/or the 30-pin->USB converter are nowhere *near* as convenient as the docking station. Plus, there is no extra battery that way, which is a huge benefit of the dock.
The keyboard dock is one of the features that really sets the Transformer series apart from other Android tablets - I think that it most certainly *is* a reason to chose the TF700 over something else.
I'm guessing that you don't have the dock?

Quoted for truth.
Thanks to everyone for your input. I read the mobiletech comparison of the infinity and note 10.1, which was in my opinion an unbiased review of the two tablets. But even as she did the review, a problem appeared on the Infinity (line on the screen). My heart leans toward the infinity because I used the prime and I like all the benefits of the keyboard dock. I am just worried that some people are returning the infinity just like it was done with the prime. I know software issues can resolved with updates so my worries lie mostly with hardware issues.

Honestly you will more then likely get swayed to not get the Infinity due to a few having a bad experience/issues with the Infinity or those that simply just enjoy the attention/drama. It's easy to get caught up in there issues and make you second guess yourself. I for one after seeing these negetive posts lately had made me second guessing myself, even though I have yet to find issues with my Infinity.
Go out and try it! Decide for yourself. Sometimes we are forced to come out of hiding to defend this great device from too much repetitive negetive postings. Also the Infinity is now running Jelly Bean 4.1.1 from the ICS that Lisa from Mobiltech review comparison video. A lot has changed since then... and it's definately even better.

These things have excellent battery life. I haven't seen any need for a larger battery and if I did, it charges through the USB port, which is very easy to set up and carry with me.
The reason I don't think the keyboard is necessary is because I don't use mine as a netbook. I have a netbook. My tablet is a tablet. I use it where a keyboard would be impractical, ie where I want a tablet.
I think these tablets are terrible netbooks. They don't multi task, their app selection is limited, JB is clunky, etc. Whenever I have work to do, I reach for my netbook.

I say...
...if you can wait for it.
Dump all the Android tablet stuff and go for the Windows Surface.
I'm no expert in the tablet or Android world, yet something says go WinRT8.
I've stuck by my Infinity thru bad and good and I'm happy, but sadly not elated.
The Android Infinity is slowly coming ashore, yet it's really not anything ground breaking.
Good!...just not fantastic yet.
I was going to screw myself with a second high performance (in relative terms) Android tab.
However for me I'm going to jump on the Surface bandwagon.
I know a Windows touch tablet will make me mad, yet I've been pissed at Windows
since 1995 so we might as well continue with the hate\love Microslop thing.
Hope the rumored price of the Surface is true.
$499.00 for a 32 gig is fair I believe.
Anyhoo...whatever your decision be a happy Android!

I would say the same thing as Thats OK. Windows 8 RT tablet is coming so soon, you should wait and at least get the sense of what people think about the tablet.
I jumped on Infinity because I really needed FHD and did not like Apple. Among the announced Win 8 tablet, there is only one that has Full HD level of screen resolution, which is Samsung Ativ Smart Pro, which is not RT but full Windows 8 tablet so the price is like $1100 and battery life is merely 5 hours. After reading these specs, I basically found myself in a spot (sort of by process of elimination).
Eventually, if the rumored Nexus 10 or perhaps Windows 8 as it evolves and comes up with better model, I may simply jump to it. With the pace of tablet evolving, I am assuming within next six months, there will be a device that is superior to anything out there in every aspect.
For now, each company and device put their own emphasis thus no device is truly superior to others (in my opinion)
Galaxy Note 10.1 - 2GB memory provides great multitasking on android, and its stability and speed is the best. S-pen and S-note experience is the closest to the real paper and pen experience. However, no Full HD and HD screen is just HD. Never as good as FHD.
Infinity - The best full HD screen android tablet. Speed is compatible to Galaxy Note in most cases. Keyboard dock is really great as it can be essentially used as portable battery charger if nothing else. Stability is not quite as high especially after the JB update, (at least for me) I get random white screen freeze, which I am hoping to have it get fixed but until then definite minus point. But its multitasking capability is not as the level of Galaxy Note 10.1.
Windows 8 RT - Don't know how much restriction there. But multitasking should be superior to that of any android as its Windows based. However, it probably will take time for its application market to develop as RT is not compatible with regular windows apps. Also, there is no FHD option, and all announced devices I believe are heavier than android counter parts.
Windows 8 Tablet - Full blown windows 8 tablet has a great potential but so far just as my old $2000 windows tablet suffered, battery, weight will be not as portable. Even xoom on my hand were felt heavy for prolonged use. Price will also be much higher like x2. However, it is real windows so you can essentially do everything that PC does (obviously not running high graphic games).
New Ipad - Full HD, great stability. But just so restrictive and basically no multitasking.
The problem with W8 tablets is kind of a Goldilocks thing.
1) Will RT be enough with the ability to only run "Modern" apps?
2) Are Atom-powered devices too little to run full Windows; especially HD video and games with high frame rates with no discrete GPU?
3) Are Pro devices which are as expensive as ultra and notebooks too much?
Here's what RT devices can and can't do:
Windows RT contains many of the same features as Windows 8:
Fluid, intuitive, and easy-to-use interface design that you can easily customize.
Built in apps like Mail, Calendar, Messaging, Photos, and SkyDrive with many more apps available in the Windows Store.
Internet Explorer 10, for fast, intuitive browsing.
Touch-enabled so you can interact with Windows in a whole new way.
Mouse and keyboard–enabled so you can be as productive as you need to be.
Windows RT also includes some different features:
Windows Update and Windows Defender are always on and up to date making your PC more secure.
Device encryption provides advanced data protection to help keep your information secure.
The PC can turn on instantly with connected standby.
Office Home & Student 2013 RT Preview is preinstalled.
Some features aren't included in Windows RT:
Windows Media Player
Windows Media Center
HomeGroup creation (you can join an existing HomeGroup but you can't create a new one)
Remote Desktop
Domain join
Although you can install apps directly from the Windows Store, you can't install apps on the desktop on Windows RT. Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview Edition comes preinstalled, which provides you with touch-optimized desktop versions of the new Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.
You can only install printers, mice, keyboards, and other devices that are certified for Windows RT.
The problem with full-W8 tablets is that when using native apps that aren't touch optimized you need steady hands and a magnifying glass to interact with them because of the display resolution.
W8 tablets could be the next big thing or they could be a fail. Until (non-media) people have them in their hands and start using them to do the things they'd do on an Android tablet or iPad it's too early to call. The HP TouchPad was easy to use and intuitive but died because of its limitations and poor app availibility. If MS Office was so important to non-business users Android tablets and iPads wouldn't be selling as well as they are. So for consumers, Office as the W8 tablet's stand-out feature might not be that big of a draw. To me, $499 for the base Surface RT is way too much for a product in a 1.0 state competing with more mature products (and eco-systems) like iOS and Android. I guess time will tell.
There is a lot to consider in this decision and depends on what you want to do with the tab. I have the prime, infinity and note. (Yes, I am a tablet horder. I'll admit that now, lol) I personally like the Note and find myself using it over the Asus brands. Everything just works on the Note. And works the way it suppose to. Heck, I can't even stream Youtube or .mkv audio over my Asus tabs without the audio getting out of sync. (via Bluetooth Headphones). That is because Asus used some cheaper components in their tabs. Cheaper AzureWave Wifi radios and Cheap io Nand. Yes, the TF700 can stream a little better than the prime, but after awhile they get out of sync and pisses me off. The major thing the TF700 has over the Note is the HD display. The HD display is nice. But, honestly half the time I can't even tell the difference between the Note and TF700. I actually prefer the colors of the Note's PLS display. Plus, its a hit or miss that you will get a HD display that wont suffer from some sort of light bleed. Performance. Well, performance goes back and forth. The Note outshined the TF700 for awhile. But since the TF700 got JB its now seems a little faster than my note. (That is without some major tweaking and rom modifications.) But the Note has the TF700 beat on multitasking. I can't wait to see what the JB update to the Note will do.
Go to the store check them out m8. If the HD is something that is the winning factor and you could care less about BT crap then go for TF700. Buy one. Take it home. Play with it for awhile. Go back trade it in and get other. Make a decision that way. Because its really hard to come on here and ask us. Each of us do different things with the our tabs. Some enjoy some features more than others. That is why the best bet is just go to a store that has a really good return policy. That way you can play around and see what you like more.
I keep hearing ppl saying to wait for winRt instead of getting an android or iPad, and am curious as to what winRT can do that can't be done on an Android or Apple tablet? It was my understanding that winRT would be limited to windows phone esque apps and you would have to get a windows 8/pro for the full experience. I was excited about the Surface when it was announced because i thought i could use all the programs that I'm used too from previous versions of Windows, but that version of the Surface isnt coming out untill later this year right?
I just don't see Windows RT succeeding at the current price point without the legacy support. $250-$300 would be more reasonable IMO.
OP I've seen videos of the Note 10.1 in action and its great, but so is the infinty when it works. If u can hold off until next year, I think Samsung will be releasing a very high res tablet with potentially exynos 5 series cores. I'd get a nexus 7/nook tablet/fire HD while u wait.
I'm running Fedora 17 on a Dell Duo for notebook purposes and it absolutely rocks. Its totally stable, no bugs, surfs great, fast, multi tasking, etc. Its an amazing combination for a netbook. The only thing it doesn't have a lot of is video power. Its definitely not a gamer in that regard.
The Duo came with Vista. SSSLLLLOOOOWWW. Touch a link and wait and wait and wait. It didn't even surf well. Its outright fast with Fedora and Fedora is improving with every release. Its way faster surfing with the Duo than the Infinity. Firefox works way better on the Duo than it does on the Infinity.
KDE 4.9 is a really nice desktop and tools like Libre Office or whatever its called are pretty nice these days. I chuckle to myself every time I realize I have the power of Linux in such a small device.
I got my Infinity to see what I was missing in Android land and to get a tablet that I can read in a car or outside. The Duo screen is almost invisible in anything near daylight.
I'm impressed by the Infinity hardware. The screen rocks, the GPS is good, etc. I am not impressed with Android itself. Its a poor, poor cousin to Linux, for example.
I wouldn't own another tablet without the IPS+ screen. ASUS should be releasing the 600 and 810 models later this month and the 600 might have an 11.6" IPS+ screen on it. It will be running WIndows 8. I'd get a 600 in a heartbeat and put Linux on it. I might do that anyway and retire my Duo. I'll keep my Infinity for around the house and in the car purposes. Its so convenient for browsing, which is about all I ever use it for, right now at least.
My wife has a Sony laptop with Win 7 on it. Her laptop before that had Vista. As far as Windows goes, are you kidding me ? I totally fail to see the attraction. And I pay about $100 for that crap every time I buy a device and install Linux on it.
I'm looking for advice on purchasing a new tablet for an after Xmas present.
I've pretty much narrowed it down to a Google Nexus 10 or the Asus TF700T-C1-CG with WiFi 10.1.
The reason I chose the Asus is that I like the ability to dock it to a keyboard then my laptop is out the door! That said, if I do want to go that route I just read where Lenovo is launching a new tablet combo next January that is incredible.
I would really appreciate user's thoughts!
Happy Holidays!

If u plan on rooting and flashing ROMs, get the Asus since it will have the keyboard. If u keeping stock, get the nexus for fast updates
^ Agree.
Also, when it comes to being a laptop replacement, just be aware of the limitations.
I can still use Flash on Jelly Bean, but it might not stay that way forever - well, almost certainly won't. And it's almost certainly going to take web developers longer than that to ditch it for compatibility's sake.
I'm going to be giving some of the Office software a shot, but for some people MSOffice is the only thing that will work for their jobs, or they need something very specific. This also goes for other programs that might not have direct, or good, translations to Android.
I find that I can use my TF101 basically any time I'd be using my laptop - although this is only because I built a desktop that I use for my heavier computing needs.

Thanks 'Brandonarev' & 'Pennycake' for the info.
I have a Sony All-in-one Touchscreen that I use as my 'workhorse'.
The laptop is networked for use in my bedroom at night or when traveling. Wish the Nexus had a keyword then I'd buy that in a NY second!

I actually Googled accessories for the Nexus 10 & found keyboards, etc. so it looks like I'll be heading in that direction.

You can get a bluetooth keyboard for pretty much any tablet or even phone.
The TF keyboard dock isn't just a bluetooth keyboard, though. It's an effective counter-balance what with the large battery in it - a battery that charges the tablet and effectively doubles battery life. In a bluetooth keyboard, you'd either have to have dead weight in the case or a kick-stand, and you'd be charging it / replacing batteries separately - a nice feature of the connected dock is that you'll know the battery level so it won't be a surprise to have it suddenly die (and it will still work as long as the tablet has power). The keyboard dock also benefits from having a hardware connection over bluetooth - and it has two stabiliser connections that don't send data, so that it can't wiggle around, as well as being held against the front and back by the part that serves as the immediate dock. It's very stable, just like a laptop or netbook.
The keyboard dock also has two full-size USB ports and a full-size SD Card slot and a track-pad.
Not trying to be a salesman, just point out the differences between what you get with a bluetooth keyboard versus the TF keyboard dock.
It will be interesting to see what they come up with for the Nexus 10, but it will certainly be more like the Surface than the TF series. The TF series is good for people who want something that can function as both a netbook and a tablet. The Surface is a step above regular bluetooth keyboards, but still isn't the same level of purpose and functionality as the TF dock - but it really depends on what you want.

Thanks much for this great info! One KB that I'm looking at for the Nexus 10 is a Motorola with kickstand, built-in battery, & protective case. Probably not as many bells & whistles as the one for the TF but close.

Hi,
what is about the new Prestigio 8" MultiPad Pro Duo (PMP5580C_DUO) ?
Fast Dualcore and fine Display....
Surface RT - now that they can run desktop apps compiled for ARM
I would say the best tablet is the surface, I love mine and the fact it can do anything a desktop can with the exception of installing legacy apps.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all of the advice. Unfortunately I missed a few updates from the thread as I've already purchased a Nexus 10. It arrives today.
For those who recommended the Surface, while it's a nice 'hybrid', the price is not justified IMO. I'll see what happens with the Nexus.

I am willing to sell my laptop because I am addicted to computer games (dota 2, total war series etc), especially that I'm at university and I need to keep focus on studies.
So I need a tablet for the occasional browsing, office editing/reading and especially for watching movies and TV shows (this is the most important aspect). I will get enough money from my laptop to buy the best thing out there, so budget isn't a problem.
I am an Android user since I used the HTC Desire back in the days, then moved on to nexus S and fell in love with Nexus devices. So the Nexus 10 was my top interest so far, but I heard some of the devices have light bleeding (and I'm very sensible to display quality) and the resolution is actually too big, so the GPU is not powerful enough for it. There are some rumors a new nexus 10 will be unveiled by google with a quad core CPU and a better GPU, but I need a tablet now, not in 4 months or even later, especially that my country doesn't sell nexus devices on google play. Online stores in Romania just got the nexus 10 at the start of this month, so there's no way I'm gonna wait for the new one.
Then I had a look at the iPad 4: I absolutely loved the build quality and how it generally felt, everything was extremely smooth and it looked great, but the 4:3 aspect ratio is a total bummer, considering that I will watch a lot of movies. I tried to find a video to see how movies run on the ipad but had no luck.
Other tablets didn't seem to get me excited too much, was looking at the asus transformer t700 but it has outdated hardware and I heard its slower then the nexus 10.
So the question is, iPad 4 or Nexus 10?
I don't want answers from fan boys, please be realistic.
Also, I don't want to hear anything about converting movies and things like these, I just want to throw the movie on the tablet and see it, be it mkv or avi, blu-ray size etc.
Nexus 10 is way much better and could do all the things you listed above, unless your prefer iOS

I never owned an iOS device, I'm just wondering which one is better.
bump
I would suggest the Asus Transformer prime with the keyboard dock especially since you're a student and you could use it like you would a laptop in class.
In terms of specs and power, the ipad is pretty great and has the biggest library of apps.
The nexus 10 isn't as absolutely all mighty but it's pretty close, and it's got android, so it'll be much more capable of replacing a laptop computer than the ipad ever will be.
I personally despise Apple, I have had extremely bad experiences with them. I'm currently on an iMac, so it's not a matter of bandwagoning and fanboyism and stuff. I truly believe Android is better and more capable than iOS. The nexus 10 is probably the best android tablet on the market, though the Samsung Galaxy Note could be good for you as you want to use it for productivity and the s-pen is supposed to be amazing. No experience with it though, but I have a nexus10 and I got rid of my laptop afterwards, don't need it anymore.
I use the n10 as a laptop too, I take notes in class and everything, if you add a bluetooth keyboard, you'll get a lot of functionality out of it.

Nexus 10 is beefy specs, very beautiful.
I'm using a nexus 7 right now, with logitech android keyboard and wacom tablet pen.
If you plan on writing notes on tablet instead of paper; I found it difficult in classes where proff writes so fast its hard to keep up.
I'm sure depends on tablet pen you get. But for writing apps for android, there's not too many good ones like there is on apple app store atm.
I tried alot of writing apps; best one that was suited for me was papryus for android. I still couldn't keep up writing notes on it.
Typing notes on it is amazing. Much better then lugging around a laptop.
If you plan on going with writing notes, I suggest something with a digitizer.
If writing notes on tablet isn't an issue your on your mind.
Then i would go with nexus 10 w/ bluetooth keyboard.

Asus Transformer Prime / Infinity: I've played with the Nexus 10 and as far as options go it trumps the Nexus 10. The 10 is a great device, but as far as using USB, adding options, batteries expansion (DOCK), SD, etc the Transformer wins. The outdated hardware/slower than nexus is partly true. The real truth is that the noticeable speed is only on tests. Running apps side by side the speed difference is down to a second or two. The TFT700 is a quad core and the Nexus 10 is a dual core. If you don't put the TFT700 into econo mode then the speed is pretty much even or going to the TFT700 at times.
Now the biggest thing I liked with Nexus over the TFT700 is the micro usb charger and plugin. That and the screen. But outside of that, the TFT700 offers something that no other tablet offers, expansion and expansion. Want another battery? Plug into the dock and you get a keyboard and a battery. Want to add an SD/MicroSD for more space? Just slide the car in. Need to use a USB thumb drive to share something with somebody that has a computer or laptop but don't have a wireless signal? Just put it into the dock. Comparing the batteries in just the devices alone, the 700 to outlast the Nexus 10 in a side by side comparison.
The Nexus does offer the best picture and the newest software updates, but the ASUS team and XDA does a pretty good job of keeping the two running in a neck and neck race.
Transformer series tablets are great. I bought a tf300t after much research and an extremely happy with it. As stated before, the dock ads full functionality for taking notes in class. Supernote came pre-installed on mine which allows you to add drawings to your notes which is essential if you will be taking any chemistry classes.

I am attending a medical university and I need a notebook for notes, professors also verify our notes at the end of semester so writing on an electrical device isn't possible for me. I will be using the tablet to watch movies and occasionally create some office files on it (though I can still go at the university's library where we have computers for that).
Does anyone have any experience with a jailbroken iPad? How dependent is it to a PC? I heard you need one when you jailbreak it (same goes for rooting on android), but what then? Can I just download cydia apps on it and install without problems?

Well it seems you really want an iPad. I will say this, your notes can be verified on either Nexus ( 7 or 10) and the Transformer. In fact the supernote feature of the Asus is very similar to evernote (although I would still use Evernote or Onenote). You can even use Google to transcribe directly to the supernote feature. If you are looking to take notes in class for Medical, try looking at LiveScribe Skypens.
Ok back to your question, not to bash the iPad, my mother and sister love theirs, but it is too restrictive for my tastes. This includes jailbroken. If you are planning on doing any kind of syncing that does not involve your cloud features you will have to sync via a PC. Apps / updates /purchase can all be done with a wireless feature (although it is much slower). Taking notes you can use Evernote / Onenote, but the handwriting / bluetooth keyboards are not even on the same playing field as the Nexus / ASUS. I can verify that as a CS/Cyber major these notes can be verified and the audio playback / video playback you will have to get permission from your teach if you are allowed to record in class first. Also in terms of watching movies you will be limited to what ever you purchase or convert to the iPad's movie player unless you sync / convert / play with it on your PC first.
PC / Mac Rules for Tablets:
You do need one for an iPad and most Android devices. I say most because there are some devices you can root/break via webpages (Apple has since closed the security hole... so you would need an older OS).
Downloading from Cydia is just like downloading from any market place, with the exception of that you do not know if it has been scanned for malware/virus/permissions. Unlike Google/Amazon you will not be told of the permissions or what exactly it will be using on your system. Also keep in mind that some apps will just not work due to the age of your device / os if you are going from Cydia.
Just to be more specific: when I meant notebook, I meant an actual notebook
You know, the one with real papers on which you use a pen to write
So I am not writing absolutely anything on a tablet/laptop. I will only use the tablet in university when I'm on some boring classes, to surf on some blogs or play some games.
Edit: I'm not really that convinced to buy the iPad, I would just be curious to own one for a while, to see how it performs in the long run. So I will probably buy it and if I don't get the hang of it in 30 days then im gonna return it and go for the nexus, where everything will be so simple for me.
I never actually held the nexus 10 in my hands so far, didn't get the chance to see it in any store, just online. Does it have at least equal quality as the ipad? I know its some kind of rubber plastic like the nexus 7, which felt good (tried that one).
If you want a good laptop replacement tablet: Go buy a PC Tablet (with the rotating displays, keyboard based).
Expensive, but fits the bill. Im pretty sure Hewett Packard (HP) and Dell have some tablets like that. Look up touchsmart on Google.

If you are under the age of 14, or, over the age of 45 than an iPad is a better choice.
If you want flexibility than get an android tablet.
If you want buisness stuff then get a non RT tablet (Windows 7, 8) (RT is no good for business stuff).
I find the tablets with folding displays to have the most bang for their buck. That is just my opinion though.
Please thank if this was useful.

My mom, my dad, and my step mom all have Android phones or tablets. They are all over 45. My mom is the kind of person who asks me to find where a program saved a file, my dad got his phone after having only had a flop phone. None of them are struggling.
As of ICS simplicity and noob friendliness isn't really an issue.

Hi,
I have an Asus Transformer TF300TG and it is absolutely great. We are using it at home for fast access to internet (emails, cooking receipts, small gaming). It has 3G capability, so you just plug a data sim of your favourite GSM carrier and you are OK to travel and use it on the way.
The battery lasts literally for hours, there is one battery in the tablet part and other in the keyboard part - when tablet is drained and you connect it to the keyboard unit, it recharges from it.
There are a office pack preinstalled (Supernote) and for making notes and easy spreadsheets, it works quite OK.
Hope it helps.
