The New Yorker App on Jelly Bean - Kindle Fire Themes and Apps

I was previously on a rooted stock KF and using the New York app which is only for KF. I've now switched to Jelly Bean ROM and would love to get the New Yorker app to work. I got the apk and installed which was fine. But once you open it immediately crashes. Anyone know how to get it work. Can something in the apk be modified so it thinks it's an original KF. I really like this app and want to get it work on JB which is a great ROM. Thanks.

Try using root explorer. To move the apk to system/app. Then reboot. If the app isnt installed by the reboot just install it by the apk. Then if it still crashes try moving the permissions around. I think i can mess around with it to work. What did you use to download it once u were on this rom?

Initially I had download the app using ES File Explorer. I used Root Browser to move the apk file to system app and changed permission to match the other apps. I rebooted which did install the app but still crashed once you get into the app.

Ok. There has to be a way to get it to work. When u say u changed it to match the others was that rw-r--r--

I agree that there must be a way for it to work. When the app loads it goes through the initial screen and as it tried to refresh magazine list it FC. I'm at work and don't have my KF so I will check the permission setting later today and let you know. I would really love to get to work. Only thing that I want on the Jelly Bean and I would have no reason to go back to the KF stock ROM.
If you can help me get this work I will write a blog post on my site about it and give you credit with any links that you want. Thanks.

No need for that. May i ask what version of jelly bean are u using. Is it jandycane by lithium or is it hashcodes basic port of jelly bean.

I'm using the CM10 Jelly with the SGT7 enhancements (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778010). I believe that is based on Haschcode port. I have not tried this app any other Jelly Bean ROM.

Mmm. Cm10 we might run into a little trouble cm10 doesnt have usb mounting yet. Any way we can do it without adb.Can u give me a link to the new yorker app so i can play around with it

I checked the permission in system/app and it is -rw-r--r-- and the app can be found https://dl.dropbox.com/u/49697586/TheNewYorker_2.2.0.12.37111.apk
The app is a Kindle Fire Edition and I think it probably checks to see if that software matches custom KF. May need to somehow edit within the apk file. Let me know if I can help in anyway. Thanks.

Not with the sgt7 enhancements. Thats what made me switch over to jandycane

What tool did you use to extract the apk. Maybe I'll take a look around myself. Were there any protected files within the apk that it could be in.

I used root explorer but since u mentioned using es file explorer. U can download 7zipper from the google play store and extracts apks. Its also free

I decompiled the apk using Virtous Ten Studio and the Android Manifest lists the minimum sdk at api 8 which is Android 2.3 and target api at 11 which is actually Android 3.0 honeycomb. So this might work on ICS ROM. I might switched and try later. Played around with changing the target api but that didn't help. This might not be that simple and require serious java coding to make it compatible. Unless someone has a solution. I'll continue to play with the file and see if I get anywhere but I'm new at this and dont' know my way around android apk that well.

Hulu + and custom roms...

So I've seen from my friends stock kindle that hulu plus is available from the Amazon app store for the fire. But when you have a custom rom it's not available from the app store but is from the market and that app unfortunately doesn't allow you to do anything but log in and browse. I've used both the portrait and landscape modded apks available on xda ,but they haven't been updated in months and the landscape one is especially jangy (missing thumbnails, etc). Hulu updated their app a few days ago and it looks gorgeous on my kindle..it just doesn't work. My rom like most others masquerades as a galaxy nexus and apparently they don't support that model so my question is..will changing my build prop back to a fire work? I'm guessing probably no but I thought I'd ask.

Yep..and it "works" its just that it hasn't been updated since Feb..the landscape mod is missing thumbnails and the portrait one is just that..portrait. The one from the market is light years ahead of both of those apks and I just wish I knew how to mod this new apk so it used the same checks as his modded apks.

Not working here
I can honestly say that neither of the cracked Hulu+ apps work for me on my KF anything we can do to help with a new version?
Actually, try installing Adfree and choosing "Revert", it fixed it on my kf

the Adfree app above didn't work for me. I searched the xda forums and found the instructions below. I followed the instructions and it worked (I can search and watch tv episodes). I have a KF with running ICS Energy ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528024).

It worked for me, hopefully it works for you guys/gals.
Directions:
1. Delete Hulu Plus if you have it installed already.
2. Delete any backups you may have of it in Titanium Backup.
3. Get Titanium Backup if you don't already have it.
4. Download this file here and unzip it, there will be 3 files in it.
5. Place all 3 files in the sdcard/TitaniumBackup folder
6. Launch Titanium Backup and restore the backup.
7. Enjoy?

3 then move it to data app.
4. reboot your kindle
5. go to setting/apps/ find gmail then uninstall
6. after the uninstall download the new gmail
7 then try installing. that should work.

[APP][CYANOGEN MOD] File Manager!!! :D

The CyanogenMod team has been making good progress towards the latest, stable version of its ROM - CyanogenMod 10 - but there's still time for more features to be added before its eventual release.
One of those features is a root-enabled file manager, which was announced on the Cyanogen Google+ page a few hours ago. Judging from the screenshots, it looks to blend in seamlessly with other CyanogenMod features and the rest of the Android OS, with a really nice looking interface. (Screenshots Below)
When you're browsing through your files, you will be able to choose between three access modes: Safe mode, Prompt User mode and Root Access mode. As you'd expect, it will allow you to view files on your internal storage device as well
you can get the apk here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?do5c710wiwcxwps
Simply copy to system/app and set permissions to rw-r--r--
Enjoy
Edit: Reread your post.never mind.

Opens up fine but everytime i open the app it searches for the sdcard for quite some time..
Also when i try to switch from Safe Mode to Root Access Mode, after granting the SU permission it goes back to safe mode instead of Root access
This is happening maybe cause its specifically modded for CM9
Edit: tried the modded apk on Numa btw, and the apk posted by the OP worked fine for me on cm10
On OTA ICS I get safe mode only. My phone is rooted. How do I switch to normal mode?
will try tq

Install 4.2 Clock and Keyboard?

So Droid-Life posted the flashable zips a few days ago for the JB4.2 clock and keyboard apps. Is there any way to extract the .apk from these zips and install on the RAZR HD XT926? Obviously can't flash them since we don't have custom recovery. Just wondering if there is another way to install them. I actually already have the keyboard from last week but I really want the clock apps.

unzip and copy over apk and lib to appropriate locations, and set permissions for each. working well for me.
You can just copy them over to the correct locations, look at the updater-script for locations and permissions.
These are included in the Vitreous Rom as well, which can be installed without unlocking your bootloader.

Loading custom MMS.apk's

Hello, this is my first post... I hope its in the right place.. haha OK so the issue I'm having is... well first is it even possible to install/use another UI's MMS.apk? For example if I want to use maybe Motorola's MMS.apk? So I have tried (through root explorer) and it wants me to install it... so I tried but it failed.. how can I get around that and make it work?
Thanks for any help!

Make a backup! Obviously

Thanks for the quick reply! I tried that but it still failed! And I tried using the app wonder machine app on my computer and when I tried it said something like missing shared files or missing shared library or something like that...
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app
You don't need to install it...if you push it to system/apps and make the permissions correct you need to reboot in order for it to work. But most likely it's part of motoblur so it probably won't work.
Thanks! And that probably is part of it! Is there any way to get around it?
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app
Use titanium backup to backup and uninstall the default app. Then put the mms.apk in system>apps. Reboot. If that doesn't work the mms app you're trying to use isn't compatible. I'm currently using the inverted aosp ics mms apk on viper rom.
