Stuck on HTC boot screen with ANY custom ROM - HTC Desire S

Hi there,
it's my fist post here so please do not shoot on sight if I did post in the wrong section. Also, I searched before posting if someone had the exact same problem and didn't find anything conclusive so here goes :
I have a unbranded Desire S which I sucessfully S-OFFed (HBOOT 2) a while ago, then installed 4Ext Recovery and rooted with success.
Now I reckon I am a bit tired of waiting for the ICS update from HTC, so what the heck, I decided i'd try some custom ROMs.
I did a full backup of all partitions using 4ext recovery and then wiped the data, cache and dalvik cache as most ROMs require.
I then proceeded to flash 3 different ROMs with the same unfortunate result : The flashing is always successful, and upon reboot I am just stuck on the HTC boot screen forever.
Then I have to turn the phone off (vol up+vol down + power) then remove the battery and put it back, and have to boot into recovery to continue from there.
After the same thing happened with the 3 ROMs (Fallout 4.4, Vanilla ICE 2 and IceColdSandwich) I just restored my initial backup and then the phone booted back to the original ROM without problems.
What could have I done wrong please ? What can I try next to make a custom ROM work ?
Thanks for your expertise !

Are you HTC dev unloced? or S-Off after downgrade?

I had a similar problem with my Desire S. It was a while ago but I finished up formatting my SDcard to FAT32. Used gparted to delete all partitions, then make one FAT32.
You can use gparted from the live CD or as I did rebooted PC with the CD, download here
I use Reaper v3.0 ROM which is very stable.
Hope this helps

I now entered 4ext recovery, cleared cache and wiped data, flashed the ROM, then rebooted into hboot and switched to fastboot mode. then plugged the USB and ran the command
fastboot flash boot boot.img
with the boot.img file extracted from the ROM's zip.
Rebooting did work and I now saw a different logo (HTC One since the ROM was ported from there) and then the phone booted into Android.
Thanks Skanob !

How to fix this problem once and for all
I have the exact same problem
Also did the htcdev unlock then superoneclick root.
Is there any way to fix it so that it flashes the boot.img on automatically when you flash a ROM?

Htcdev doesn't s-off, it unlocks boot loader but you're still s-on
The forum contains all the information, read the index
So you need to relock

rom/root problem

Hi. Today I got my Desire S.
I rooted it using a tool called unlock root: http://www.unlockroot.com/
then I installed rom manager, and installed clockworkmod recovery.
Next I booted into recovery and wiped everything, but now no matter what rom im trying to install, it will just show the HTC boot screen when starting the phone, and nothing more happens.
Does anyone have a suggestion how to solve the problem?
'UnlockRoot'? Have a look at this website and you might consider better ways of rooting your phone, such as following the recommended procedures listed in many places on XDA
http://lifehacker.com/5873745/unlock-root-roots-nearly-250-android-devices-in-one-click
Also, how is this a 'Development' question? This should be in the 'General' or 'Q&A' forum can a mod please move it?
yeah I found out, I tried using htc's way of rooting it http://www.htcdev.com
but that's not possible now, because the bootloader have changed because of that unlock tool, and now htc dev won't accept it when trying to root it.
I guess i just broke my phone , and i can't unroot it, because that unlocktool require that i got usb debugging enabled, witch i can't in clockworkmod :S.
sorry for posting in the wrong section, please move it.
maybe it would be possible if I had a clockworkmod backup for desire S. If this works, I would be extremly glad, if someone could take a backup with clockworkmod, and upload it
...Is your phone S-OFF ?
Maybe it is a stupid question, but I doubt you can successfully install a custom ROM with a S-ON phone
I guess your phone is still S-ON so you need to flash the boot.img from any rom.zip you want to use manually through fastboot.

If you ''unlock'' your bootloader
when you flash rom.zip from recovery, the boot.img won't be flash in.
you have you take out the boot.img from your rom,and then flash it from fastboot.
when you enter the fastboot
type the following in adb
fastboot flash boot boot.img
now you can boot your phone hope you success

HTC Desire S Clockwork Mod issues

Hi,
I'm running an HTC Desire S S-ON but unlocked via the htc dev site.
HBOOT 2.00.0002
Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4
Previously I was on the stock Android 2.3.5 and HTC Sense 3.0 from an OTA update.
I used Clockwork to do a Nadroid backup and tried to install Cyanogen 7.1 this got stuck in a boot loop and I then found I couldn't restore to the backup or install any other ROMs.
I have been searching everywhere and I can't find a method to de-brick my phone that works, can anyone point me in the right direction please?
Cheers,
Matt H
While your phone is s-on you can only flash stock roms.
You need to s-off your phone first
Sent from my Desire S using XDA App
extract boot.img from the CyanogenMOD7.zip and flash it with fastboot:
Code:
fastboot flash boot {path to the file on your PC}\boot.img
You will need fastboot configured - link in my signature.

Ahhh that makes more sense now, I had only half understood a thread I had read earlier,
Thanks
loading the boot.img via fastboot comes back as a success on the command line, however it still hangs at the 3 mobile loading screen.
Reflash the ROM and the boot.img from the ZIP after doing a full wipe.
Just to be clear, I have wiped the phone using clockwork, and reflashed using fastboot from the commandline, this is still hanging on 3 mobile splash screen, I am starting to think I am cursed...
Cheers,

Try 4ext

given that I can't actually boot my phone to install 4ext from the market, is there any way of flashing it in place of clockwork? Or is there any way of just restoring it to the state before I flshed clockwork to it?

Take a deep breath You phone is fine just need the proper components
Make a full wipe (system, data, cache, dalvik cache, boot) from the recovery
Install the custom ROM again (important)
Reboot to bootloader from the recovery power menu
Use the fastboot command to flash the boot.img
Reboot the phone normally and wait (it can take up to 10 minutes to boot)

MOST IMPORTANT STEP. Be calm
Thanks everyone for your help my Desire S is now Cyanogenmodded .
I think next week I may write a step by step for doing this on linux, once I have got over the trauma...
First posting with a problem but done a lot of reading and can't find my answer...
I have a Desire S which had the initial telco branding splash screens for boot and animation as well as all the apps they install.
Following the excellent guide here by nodeffect for beginners I used Revolutionary to S-Off and install CWM then flashed su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip to get root.
I then followed this thread by vampire36 about flashing a rom the perfect way but did not have the option to format boot in cwm so carried out all the other steps and I have Reaper 2.0 flashed but still with the initial boot splash screen of the telco when the phone initially powers on.
Two questions...
1. Why would I not get the option in cwm to format boot ?
2. Is this why the initial splash screen still remains and do i need to use adb to flash a new boot.zip through fastboot ?

1. There is no need to format boot on devices with flash memory (honestly I do not know exactly why, you can make a research if you like).
2. The splash screen is just a picture but is stored on another partition, so is not affected by installing other components. If you want to change it you can use Android Flasher and any image you like.

random stuck and reboot
Alright, here is how it goes... I bought this used sensation xe from a guy, the time I check the phone, it is already ota update. While that time the phone keep stuck and reboot.for few times. Maybe 30 minutes once. The whole phone suddenly freeze and then restart. So I decide to root it and install custom Rom, I thought that maybe custom Rom will works better, but not. I read some guides out there mention that in order to flash custom Rom, we need to unlock the phone first. So I unlock by using the HTC dev method. After that I flash dark forest ics Rom, but the stuck and reboot problem still remains there. So here is my bootloader. UNLOCKED , PYRAMID PVT SHIP S - ON RL. HBOOT 1.27.0000. any idea how to fix this? Please provide me step by step guide if yes. I have been confusing searching the forum.

ohh you got ics ota previusly...good things are easy now for you
now
1.you got rom on your sdcard or on pc ?..then extract the boot.img file from rom's zip file (usually present in kernels folder... if it has more than one boot.img choosethe one of your choice)
2.keep the boot.img in adb folder (assuming you got adb/factboot setup)
3.keep the device in fastboot mode and connect it to pc (bootloader then fastboot)
3.flash the boot.img via fastboot
command : "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
(you need to do this every time you install custom rom via custom recovery---to prevent this you can install latest 4EXT custom recovery 1.0.0.5 RC3 )
4.reboot ---then voila it should work
The Rom you mean is custom Rom? But I discover that after I flash the dark forest Rom, I can't flash any other custom Rom or kernel. It says (bad). Installation aborted . Later will try the method that you stated. The adb folder is on pc? You mean c: Android on my computer?

Lol.. I thought you are stuck at bootloop..
The above method I mentioned helps too as these random boots might happen due to kernel/module mismatch... So first do that and see the random reboots are gone.
If that didn't solve the issue
Then this random boots might be due to improper flash of rom... First if you got custom recovery installed.. Do a full wipe (use ARHD super wipe too if you want to) from recovery and then flash the rom again... See that solves the issue.. If still not then once again extract the boot.img and repeat the above process again

Hangs at bootloader or reboots to recovery

I rooted my phone yesterday and installed a rom.
I followed all steps clearly but once i flashed the rom and i restart, it hangs at htc logo screen for 1 minute and then reboots and shows htc logo screen again and goes directly to recovery. I am unable to see any rom interface. I tried two different roms and same result. Now tried to restore back to my sense ui and still it does not work. Help please
A wild guess: you used HTCDev unlock method and didn't flash kernel manually, even though it's written in zillion places to do so.

Restore stock ROM using RUU (and use misc_version script to downgrade the main version first). If you unlocked using HTCDev, you'll need to relock first. Read the guides, they're aplenty.
If it won't help or will write Fail-PU during restore - your phone is done.

HTC Sensation 1.27 stuck at boot screen after rom change

HTC Sensation 1.27 stuck at boot screen after rom change
Yes yes, and another noob reporting for duty after screwing up the rom proces, it took me about 6 hours today after dozens of guides, broken links, outdated software and offline sites to get my phone rooted and i thought, well, a custom rom would be nice too.
So i tried the rom for Sensation from codenamelungo.net copied the zip on my sd card, installed it from recovery and now im stuck at the htc screen and being the noob that i am i ofcourse did not make a backup and have no clue what to do now
If someone could explain to me in simple words how i can fix this?
My recovery is CWM v5.8.0.9
*** UNLOCKED ***
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.27.000
eMMC-boot
I did the:
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe Cache Partition
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
formatted everything.
Tried relocking it and factory reset but all it does is then booting in recovery menu nonstop on every option i choose.
Another day:
Been on the internet again since i woke up and this is driving me insane, i read many posts with solutions but ofc they dont work for my version or phone damnit. I always have this kind of stuff, why didnt i have the Sensation where stuff go easy, at this point i am hoping to get it to stock again and not ever gonna try flashing custom rom.
I just finished up a couple readings about RUU files which ofc is also driving me insane.
My cid is HTC_e11
version-main 3.33.401.55
So i googled and typed in what was suggest on a post on this forum RUU Pyramid 3.33.401.55 and the only result it links me to is this website in showthread.php?t=1919969
I dl the zip file and what is in it, not 1 .exe file while all posts talking about restoring through ruu talk about a ruu.exe
Pfff, ive read so many posts now on this website and other solutions over the internet i can't even think straight anymore so gonna take a break, was really happy getting a smart phone but i enjoyed 30 min so far ><
Surely hope some1 can assist me with this dilemma

Now read carefully and do the extra #1 step from the same guide you've used
That should solve the issue

This is not a big issue. Just remember that every time you flash a new rom 4ext should say "A pending update to boot parti...........". All roms will work fine.

You shouldn't be getting that with s-on since you don't need SmartFlash

You should be able to flash any Rom based on your current firmware. Regarding roms the only difference between s-on and s-off is that you cannot flash boot.img from recovery.
For s-on, either you need smartflash, or a manual flash of boot.img via fastboot flash boot boot.img
This is applicable as long as firmware is same.
Happy to help.

about "A pending update to boot parti...........". appears only when you are changing kernel or flashing a new rom with a different kernel than your current one
HELP
hey guys, i have the same problem, but it can't install the rom, it says "make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p. Also, E:Error in "rom".zip (Status 1). I have searched the whole internet but to no avail. Need professional help.
