CyanogenMod is arguably one of the most installed Android ROM in the world, and for good reason. It offers a ton of great features, is available for more devices than most other ROMs of its type, and has the type of polish and support that makes it easy to fall in love with. There are builds of CyanogenMod for Android phones and tablets, and slowly but surely the developers behind CyanogenMod are rolling out Ice Cream Sandwich versions for devices whose manufacturers have given up on upgrading the device entirely. To boot, CyanogenMod includes features you won't find in stock Android, like support for OpenVPN, support for downloadable themes, more privacy tools, and more.
Supported Devices:
Google Nexus S
Google Nexus S 4G
HTC Desire S
HTC Evo 3D
Samsung Galaxy S
Samsung Galaxy S II
More...
Android Open Kang Project (AOKP)
The Android Open Kang Project (AOKP) is a relative newcomer compared to many of the other popular ROMs already available, but it's rapidly growing in popularity. It offers many of the features that CyanogenMod has, and at first blush you may mistake one for the other, but as soon as you start looking at the options and add-ons, you'll see the differences. AOKP has earned high marks for add-ons and tools that you can't get in CM, centralized control over ROM options, and overall more customization options than CM. At the same time, its development community is smaller and it may not have the same polish and device support that CyanogenMod has. Still, it's super-fast, it's stable, and definitely worth a look.
You can find a list of all supported devices here
MIUI
MIUI struck me with how beautiful the user interface was and how elegant it made Android look and feel. It's not the most feature-packed or hackable ROM, but it's definitely one of the most customizable and elegant, and it's seriously fast. MIUI started life as a modded version of Android localized in China, but fans of the mod have since localized it for dozens of languages and countries. It offers strong theme support, beautiful stock apps, customizable lockscreens, support for GApps, and complete root access. You're not going to get a wealth of niche features here, but you will get a device that's much easier and more fun to use once you install MIUI.
You can find a list of supported devices here
DarkyROM
DarkyROM is a more manufacturer-specific custom ROM. They support the latest and greatest Samsung Android devices (i.e. the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II) by taking the stock TouchWiz UI, removing some of the bloatware that comes with it and then adding their own features.

App's
I have compiled some of the most used apps on rooted devices
Super User
When you have a rooted phone you will need this little app called super user that has a massive job. When you rooted your phone it will have more than likely come with this app, if not then you can download it here. The basic idea behind super user is to control the root access to you phone. Your phone must have this app before you continue with the rest of this guide. Using Super User is easy when you open an app that needs root access a prompt will come up asking if you want to allow this app super user access, giving you two options deny or allow.
Titanium Backup Root
Losing all the apps on your device accidentally or while flashing custom rom is a bad feeling. Re-downloading every app is a painstaking work so fortunately for root users, Titanium Backup provides the solution. Titanium Backup is a powerful backup utility which stores your apps, app data, and system data on your SD card for safekeeping. Titanium Backup can also painlessly remove, freeze-unfreeze any app, including system apps. This app can be configured to run its tasks on a schedule, and the donate version allows you to set up multiple schedules for the various combinations of backups it is capable of performing.
Root Explorer
Root Explorer is the ultimate file manager for root users. Access the whole of android's file system (including the elusive data folder!).
Features include SQLite database viewer, Text Editor, create and extract zip or tar/gzip files, extract rar archives, multi-select, execute scripts, search, remount, permissions, bookmarks, send files (via email, bluetooth etc), image thumbnails, APK binary XML viewer, change file owner/group, create symbolic link, "Open With" facility, MD5.
AdFree
Removes adds from browsers and other apps in just a click!
It does this by nullifying requests to known host names in the system hosts file.
SetCPU
SetCPU is a tool for changing the CPU settings on a rooted Android phone or tablet, including the Galaxy Nexus, HTC One series, Nexus S, Nexus One, Motorola Droid, Samsung Galaxy series, and most other devices. You're under control: SetCPU can improve your performance, save battery, or both!
Chainfire 3D
With this app installed, you can play any HD game on your phone.
Chainfire3D is an intermediary OpenGL driver. It means that Chainfire3D sits between your apps and the graphics drivers, and can intercept and/or change commands between the two. It has some built-in functions, and can be further extended with plugins to provide extra functionality.
ROM Manager
Make backups, flash ROMs, and own your device.
ROM Manager is THE MUST HAVE APP for any Android root user.
* Flash your recovery to the latest and greatest ClockworkMod recovery.
* Manage your ROMs via a handy UI.
* Organize and perform backups and restores from within Android!
* Install ROMs from your SD card.
* Install your favorite ROMs over the air!
Premium Version:
* Premium ROMs
* Receive notifications for when your ROM is updated!
* Automatic backups
* Install from QR Code
* Web Connect
* Support
FaceNiff
FaceNiff is an Android app that allows you to sniff and intercept web session profiles over the WiFi that your mobile is connected to.
It is possible to hijack sessions only when WiFi is not using EAP, but it should work over any private networks (Open/WEP/WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK)
It's kind of like Firesheep for android. Maybe a bit easier to use (and it works on WPA2).
WiFiKill
Well, with this app you can disable internet connection for a device on the same network. So if someone (anyone) is abusing the internet wasting precious bandwidth for a Justin Bieber videoclips you could just kill their connection and stay happy with a full bandwidth just for yourself.
ROM Toolbox
ROM Toolbox combines all the great root apps all tied up into one monster app with a beautiful and user-friendly interface. It also adds many more unseen features!
☆ Install full ROMs and other zips from a growing list of ROMs
☆ Create, manage and restore nandroid backups
☆ Wipe data, cache, dalvik-cache, battery stats

GameCIH
With GameCIH You can modify the game state(score, money, HP, ...) to allow for infinite lives, invulnerability, and etc.
Tasker
Tasker by itself doesn't require root privileges to run, but some of its more impressive features do. Giving Tasker room to do what it does best is definitely a good thing, since it can practically automate your entire phone given the right amount of power. Rooting your phone is the only way to give it that kind of access.

FAQ's
Q. What's a ROM?
One of the best things about the openness of the Android platform is that if you're unhappy with the stock OS, you can install one of many modified versions of Android (called ROMs) on your device. The downside is that there are so many developers and different Android devices out there that the custom ROM scene can be very difficult to navigate.
Please note: A ROM can ONLY be flashed to a device it is made for!
Q. Types Of ROMs?
The most popular types of ROM's come in three different flavors: ROMs that port future versions of Android to your device (when they aren't yet officially available), ROMs that add new features beyond the stock OS, and ROMs that focus on speed and stability. These aren't the only three categories of custom ROMs, nor are they hard and fast rules, but they offer good guidelines as to what's out there. Generally, you can pick a ROM fairly easily if you know which of these three categories contains the features most important to you.
Q. The Right ROM For You?
The problem with the ROM scene is that most ROMs don't have any kind of official web site; they're usually just posted on forums (which makes them a bit more difficult to search for). There aren't many comprehensive ROM databases on the net, but I did find This List at TheUnlockr, which is pretty good. Just click on your phone's model and you'll be presented with a fairly well-maintained list of the popular ROMs available for your phone.
Q. How To Download A ROM?
Installing a new ROM (more commonly known as "flashing") is very easy with ROM Manager. Just go back to the "Download ROM" section (or, if you're installing a ROM from your SD card, go to "Install ROM from SD card" and pick your ROM).
NOTE: Always, always back up your existing ROM before flashing something new. Then, if something goes wrong, you can always restore to your latest backup, either through ROM Manager (by going to "Manage and Restore backups" on the main menu) or by booting into recovery mode and choosing "nandroid".
Q. What is a bootloader?
A bootloader contains information about your device. It is quite similar to a computer’s BIOS. Official bootloader also have a security option called CID (Carrier-ID) which allows you just to install ROM’s from the provider of your phone. So, if you want to flash another ROM, you first have to turn off this security option by “CID-unlocking” your device. Check the flashing instructions below on how to do this.
Q. How To Download The Apps Given In Post 2 ^^ ?
Just click on the title and you will be redirected to the download page or their official website.
Q. Why You Should Use CyanogenMod?
1. Built-in Screenshot feature
2. Better, faster UI
3. Overclocking
4. Automatic installation to SD instead of phone memory
5. Cool Themes
Q. Why You Should Flash A Custom ROM?
1. Better battery life
2. Features that aren't normally available on stock phones can also be found on phones running custom software
3. More Themes
4. Many Options
5. Extremely Customizable
6. Lots of updates
7. Better Performance
Q. Why You Shouldn't Flash A Custom ROM?
1. Flashing Rom voids warranty
2. The work required before flashing can be labor intensive and confusing to the first timer
3. You run the risk of bricking your device when flashing a ROM or in the steps leading up to it
4. You will have to wipe data, do a factory reset
Q. Which Is The Fastest/Best ROM?
There are so many Rom's out on internet, it is impossible for anyone to answer this question. Refer to Q.2 and find which type of ROM you need.
Q. How To Revert All The Changes And Make Your Phone As It Was Before Flashing?
If you read Q.4 above, it says "Always take a Nandroid Back up before flashing any ROM". Well now you know why!
If you did take a Nandroid Backup, you can go into recovery mode and restore from that backup.
If you have a question other than the one's described above, you can search the forum and find the answer or you can post your question and let other users answer them!

Nice list, but you might want to remove Lucky Psyche from it, as it's against XDA rules.

[FAQ][UPDATED 10/12/12] The Thunderbolt Root User's Dictonary v1.0.2

I'm creating this A - Z dictionary because I myself struggled a lot with the Android/Thunderbolt jargon when I first entered the Root scene. I would assume that other newly rooted Thunderbolt users will struggle and are struggling with the same thing, and I think a tool like this might help them. Keep in mind that most of these terms are either Android-specific or Thunderbolt-specific (if there is enough variance between the general Android and specific Thunderbolt meaning). So, without further ado...
The Thunderbolt Root User's Dictionary v1.0.2!
VVV A - M VVV
A
A2SD: 1. (abvr., n.) Apps 2 SD [card]. A root-only application used to move applications from your Thunderbolt's internal memory to a separate partition of your SD card. The partition uses an ext filesystem (either ext2, ext3, or ext4), which is the same filesystem that Andorid's internal memory uses. A2SD made its debut in CyanogenMod before the days of Froyo, in which Google added their own method of moving applications to the SD card without partitioning it.
1u. A2SD has a paid version and a free version, both of which are available in the Android market.
ADB: 1. (abvr., n.) Android Debug Bridge. A tool included with the Android SDK (Software Development Kit) which is located in the platform-tools folder of the un-packed ASDK. It interacts with your device by way of specific commands issued by the user from a separate device.
1u. Unless you use a one-click root method, you will have to use ADB in order to root your Thunderbolt.
AOSP: 1. (abvr., n.) The Android Open Source Project. A Google-led project whose goal is to further the development and to maintain the Open-Source Android operating system. AOSP hopes to accomplish it's goal by making the Android source code available to all interested parties, from device manufacturers to private developers.
1u. Cyanogenmod is an AOSP-based ROM.
B
Baseband: 1. (n.) Essentially, a driver for your Thunderbolt's radio. In theory, upgrading your baseband will give you a better radio signal, however in reality, an upgrade could potentially worsen your signal. Usually the baseband version is the same as the CDMA version for any given radio.
1u. Some basebands will only work with certain ROMs.
Bloatware: 1. (n.) Applications which are installed prior to the Thunderbolt's purchase but which serve little or no purpose, are obsolete and/or of poor quality, or are just plain dumb.
1u. Slacker radio, and application pre-loaded on the Thunderbolt, is usually regarded as bloatware.
Bootloader: 1. (n.) A set of code containing instructions for the operating system which is executed at every boot/reboot. Your bootloader has a simple user interface (hboot, see separate entry) which allows for debugging modification prior to boot. 2. (n.) [Unlocked] Bootloader: A bootloader which has been hacked to allow for limitless third party customization. With an unlocked botloader, users can load custom firmware, kernels, themes, and more. From an unlocked bootloader, you can boot normally, into recovery mode, or power down, amongst other options. Unlocking your bootloader voids your manufacturer's warranty.
1u. When you power on your device, bootloader will run before any other applications.
2u. I got my unlocked bootloader today and loaded up Cyanogenmod!
Brick: 1. (n.) A Thunderbolt which makes for a better paperweight than a mobile device; A Thunderbolt which is missing key functionality or which no longer functions and which cannot be recovered by rebooting normally, in recovery, or by means of RUU. 2. (v.) Brick[ed]: To have damaged your Thunderbolt, either physically or on a software level, so that it is beyond repair, at which point it becomes a Brick (see Brick, 1. (n.)).
1u. Adrenelyne: *Eyes closed* Is it a brick guys?
2u. Arednelyne: I BRICKED THE DAMN THING!
Busybox: 1. (n.) A small software application which provides many standard UNIX tools, although these tools are not as capable as their larger GNU Core Utility counterparts. Unless you intend to develop Android, all you really need to know about Busybox is that it is needed in order to root your Thunderbolt.
1u. Just as the self-proclaimed name, the "Swiss Army Knife of Embedded Linux", implies, Busybox is a set of many UNIX tools packaged into a small file.
C
CDMA: 1. (abvr., n.) Actually lengthened to CDMA2000, but often shortened simply to CDMA. CDMA, in terms of the Thunderbolt, is a wireless air interface used to transmit voice, data, and signaling data between the Thunderbolt and Verizon cell sites. It is responsible for your 1X/3G data connection as well as for your voice call connection. Your call connection signal strength is represented by the signal bars in the notification bar at the top of your screen, while your 1X/3G connection is represented by their corresponding icons located to the left of the signal bars (no 1X/3G/4G icon means you have no data connection).
1u. CDMA technology was first used in cordless home telephones.
ClockworkMod: 1. (n.) A popular custom replacement for the stock Android recovery console. With ClockworkMod, users can access advanced commands that stock recovery does not offer. Otherwise inaccessible commands can be executed, such as storage mounting options, .zip flashing, and nandroid backup restoration. ClockworkMod is a tool used often by developers and is something that you will see a lot of as a rooted Thunderbolt user.
1u. I booted into ClockworkMod mode so that I could flash Imoseyon's newest kernel, v15.4926.0010010.666test47
CyanogenMod: 1. (n.) Custom firmware based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). CyanogenMod (often shortened to CM, or CM7 for version 7.x) offers features not found in the stock Thunderbolt firmware, and it runs Gingerbread, not Froyo. CM7 is currently in the Alpha stage of development for Thunderbolt users.
1u. Users who use CyanogenMod are able to browse the web in incognito mode.
D
Dalvik: 1. (n.) A virtual machine designed by Google for use in the Android operating system. Sometimes shortened to DVM or DalvikVM. 2. (n.) Dalvik [Cache]: A cache of small .dex files which are used to quickly and efficiently load applications. Basically, when Android starts up, the DalvikVM scans through all of your applications (files with .apk extensions) and application framework. It then optimizes the bytecode (tiny code commonly used for efficient software execution) for each application into a .dex file and stores that file in the Dalvik Cache. The applications are then run using the .dex file (optimized bytecode). By doing this, Android is able to speed up to execution of applications by loading them from smaller .dex files instead of larger .apk files. This is why when you install a new ROM, it takes longer to boot for the first time (because the DalvikVM is scanning and optimizing each application/framework). Every time an application (or framework library) changes or is installed, it’s re-optimized into a .dex file and the cache is updated.
1u. Dalvik is named after a fishing village in Iceland.
2u. Many custom ROMs give you the ability to clear your Dalvik cache at any time.
Debloat: 1. (v.) To remove the bloatware from your Thunderbolt. 2. (adj.) Debloat[ed]: A ROM which comes with some or all bloatware removed.
1u. If you want to debloat your ROM, just flash the debloat patch!
2u. Many ROMs come debloated and deodxed.
Deodex: 1. (n.) A patch of sorts that involved the un-odexing of a ROM. An odex, simply put, is a collection of bits of different applications that have been pulled from their original sources prior to boot with the intent to speed up the boot process. Therefore, a deodex is the patch applied to a ROM which all the bits from all the different applications have been returned to their respective sources. *Note: Most ROMs come either odexed or deodexed.
1u. BAMF ROMs are all deodexed prior to their release (plus they're awesome )
E
eMMC: 1. (abvr., n.) Embedded MultiMediaCard. eMMC is simply a storage solution with MMC interface, flash memory, and controller. The average Thunderbolt user only needs to know that the Thunderbolt uses 4GB of eMMC as it's internal storage, although Android and other system partitions (one for hboot/bootloader, one for recovery, and one for Android itself) take up roughly 1.4GB of that, leaving only 2.6GB that can be used for application and data storage. So in terms of the Thunderbolt, eMMC is just a technical term for internal storage.
1u. eMMC has a high capacity, reliable write, boot, and sleep modes, a dual data date, support for multiple partitions, and security enhancements over MMC.
ETA: 1. (abvr., n.) Estimated Time of Arrival. In the world of Android development, ROMs, kernels, RILs, etc. are created at whatever pace their developers decide to create them at. It is considered disrespectful to demand an ETA for any custom software or code because, quite frankly, we're lucky to have dedicated developers who are kind and talented enough to produce such things at no cost. One should not, under any circumstance, ask for ETAs. Period. /Thread.
1u. Sooooooo.... whats the ETA on that CM7 RIL?
F
Firmware: 1. (n.) In its most basic form, software that has been written onto read-only memory (ROM). However, firmware in the context of Android and Thunderbolt could be defined as the software that drives the device. It is both programs and code whose purpose is to control the hardware of the Thunderbolt, and is therefore essential to your Thunderbolt's operation.
1u. Verizon is pushing out a firmware update on the 30th... NOT!
Flash: 1. (v.) To install custom software, which is packaged into a .zip, onto your Thunderbolt through recovery mode. When you flash a custom ROM, or when someone refers to flashing a patch, the thing being flashed is the thing being installed. Therefore, if the term flash throws you off, just pretend it says "install" instead.
1u(a). I am going to flash the latest version of BAMF later today.
1u(b). Once the patch has been flashed, your data connection should be restored.
Freeze: 1. (v.) Freezeing is a function within the application Titanium Backup which allows the rooted user to "freeze", or temporarially disable, any application (including system applications). Freezing is useful in disabling bloatware that cannot be uninstalled.
1u(a). I am going to freeze My Verizon; that app is annoying!
Froyo: 1. (n.) Version 2.2 of the Android operating system. Thunderbolts currently come with this version of Android.
1u. My Thunderbolt is running Android version 2.2.1, which is categorized as Froyo.
G
Gingerbread: 1. (n.) Version 2.3 of the Android operating system. Often abbreviated to GB.
1u. I wish my Thunderbolt could have some yummy Gingrebread...
GPU: 1. (abvr., n.) Graphics Processing Unit. Your Thunderbolt's GPU is akin to your computer's video card. It is a chip, much like a CPU, which is responsible for manipulating and altering memory/data related to graphical output. A GPU does this more efficiently than a CPU because of the way that such memory/data is arranged (in parallel as opposed to in series).
1u. Imoseyon's kernels offer several GPU enhancements that are baked straight into his kernel code.
H
HBoot: 1. (abvr., n.) HotBoot. Located on a partition of your Thunderbolt's eMMC, HBoot allows you to boot into other eMMC partitions such as bootloader, recovery, and your regular ROM. HBoot is the first thing that runs when you power on your Thunderbolt. By default, HBoot simply loads bootloader when your device is powered on. However, you can boot into HBoot in order to access its various features by using ADB or by holding your volume down and power buttons simultaneously.
1u. Hboot is easily the hardest term to research
HDPI: 1> (abvr., n.) High Dots Per Inch (DPI). DPI is a measure of screen pixel density, so a higher DPI always means a higher resolution screen, meaning a higher definition image. The Thunderbolt, being an HDPI device, has a better screen than the Eris, which is an MDPI device, or Medium DPI.
1u. Some Google App (GAPPS) packages are made for HDPI devices and others for MDPI/LDPI devices.
I
I/O Scheduler: 1. (abvr., n.) Input/Output Scheduler. The I/O scheduler is code that is tasked with deciding the order in which I/O operations are submitted to the eMMC and SD card. Common goals of many I/O scheduler are to minimize time wasted by hard disk seeks, to prioritize a certain processes' I/O requests, to give a share of the disk bandwidth to each running process, and to guarantee that certain requests will be issued in a particular time frame. Everyone has their own opinion about which I/O scheduler is the best for Thunderbolt, and each kernel varies with which I/O schedulers it supports.
1u. The default I/O scheduler for CyanogenMod is BFQ.
J
=====================================
K
Kernel: 1. (n.) The bridge between applications and the actual data processing done on the hardware level. Basically, the kernel talks to hardware components like the RAM and CPU inside the Thunderbolt and assigns the proper amount of each of the component's resources to be used for an application's tasks. In Android, the kernel is also used to control the CPU clock speed and voltage, as well as other hardware-related functions.
1u. You can upgrade your kernel just like you can upgrade your ROM, but only if you're rooted!
L
LTE: 1. (abvr., n.) Actually lengthened to 3GPP Long Term Evolution, but often shortened to just LTE. In your Thunderbolt, LTE is responsible for your 4G wireless data transfer. Although LTE does not officially qualify as a 4G network, it is often marketed as such.
1u. The Thunderbolt runs on Verizon's 4GLTE network, although LTE coverage is currently only in large cities.
M
MD5: 1. (n.) A 128-bit hash that functions as a compact digital fingerprint for a file. Since almost every MD5 hash is unique (although mathematically its not impossible for multiple files to have the same MD5 hash), they are often used to verify the validity of downloads for your Thunderbolt, such as ROMs and kernels. 2. (n.) MD5Sum: [AKA checksum] A program used to calculate the MD5 hash of a given file. You'll use an MD5Summer in order to make sure your downloaded ROM/kernel/mod is 100% good.
1u. Always check the MD5 hash before you flash a ROM or kernel!
2u. An MD5Summer can be found here.
VVV SEE POST #2 FOR N - Z VVV
N
Nandroid: 1. (n.) A complete backup image of your Thunderbolt which can be restored in the event of phone problems or failure. A nandroid can be created in a number of ways, the most popular of which is through the application ROM Manager by selecting the option "Backup current ROM". Nandroids are saved onto your SD card, so wiping your data in order to flash new ROMs won't affect them! A nandroid is the best safety net for users experimenting with unstable ROMs or kernels.
1u. I flashed a ROM for a different device by mistake, so I booted into recovery and restored my BAMF nandroid backup!
Nightlies: 1. (n.) Nightly releases of a ROM, usually one which is AOSP-based. These releases are often less stable than official versions of the ROM because nightlies are changed on a nightly basis, meaning that some small bugs are inevitably overlooked. The CyanogenMod team coined the term and currently hosts nightlies for download on their servers, but only for devices which already have stable CM releases.
1u. Since CM is still working out the kinks in its RIL, OMFGB, another AOSP-based ROM with a working RIL, has begun releasing nightlies.
O
OTA: 1. (abvr., n.) Over The Air. Usually used in the context of an OTA update. 2. (n.) OTA [Update]: An update which is pushed, or sent out over the air, by Verizon. OTA updates are sent to all wireless customers. There are rumors that Verizon will soon send out an OTA update which will take the Thunderbolt from Froyo to Gingerbread.
1u. Verizon patched Android OTA.
2u. Hopefully, Verizon will give us Gingerbreads with an OTA update soon
Overclock: 1. (v.) To increase the CPU clock speed (which is measured in GHZ, or gigahertz) from its stock settings in order to increase the Thunderbolt's processing speed. The long-term results of overclocking on a mobile scale have yet to be determined because the ability to overclock and retain stability has only recently been achieved.
1u. I have my Thunderbolt overclocked to 1.41GHZ
P
Port: 1. (v.) To take a custom ROM/mod/kernel/theme/etc made for one device and adapt its code and architecture to run stably on the Thunderbolt. 2. (n.) A custom ROM/mod/kernel/theme/etc for a device other than the Thunderbolt which has been adapted to run stably on the Thunderbolt.
1u. Many people coming from different devices want their favorite ROMs ported over to the Thunderbolt.
2u. Kingdom is a port that many Thunderbolt users run.
Q
=====================================
R
Radio: 1. (n.) Software which controls all of the Thunderbolt's wireless communication, from CMDA to LTE. Without a radio installed, you won't have a data signal or a network signal. 2. (n.) The radio on the hardware level is what sends and receives wireless signals via the Thunderbolt's internal antenna.
1u. I want to upgrade my radio to MR2 when Gingerbread becomes more stable.
2u. The Thunderbolt's radio can receive data at 4G speeds.
*For general knowledge* >>> Head over to the Obligatory Thunderbolt Radio Thread to get your hands on basic Froyo radios. The first 4 radios on that page are for Froyo ROMs, but the last one is for Gingerbread only! For instructions on how to flash a radio, check out my FAQ Thread (coming soon...)
Recovery: 1. (n.) A mode which exists on a partition of your Thunderbolt's eMMC that can be accessed either through the use of ADB or through bootloader. In recovery mode (stock), you can factory reset your device and recover your operating system by flashing a signed ROM. There are few other options accessible in stock recovery mode. *Note: Not to be confused with Clockworkmod (see seperate entry).
1u. I really want to get rid off all this junk I've installed, so I booted into recovery and did a full factory reset.
RIL: 1. (n.) Radio Interface Layer. Its a large amount of pretty basic code that essentially helps software in need of network access communicate with the radio hardware itself. I'm paraphrasing here, but the process is something along the lines of: An application needs some kind of network usage --> the main phone application --> RIL --> two different RILs, the latter of which sends the signal out to the tower. Its sort of like the kernel of the radio.
1u. CM7's RIL is currently being worked on; when it's complete, CM7 should be headed towards its first official Thunderbolt release!
ROM: 1. (n.) Read-only memory. A ROM, in Android and Thunderbolt, is custom firmware designed either by the device manufacturer (signed firmware, where the word signed indicates its authenticity as manufacturer firmware) or by a third party (custom firmware). Installing a ROM involved flashing the .zip that it is compressed within through Recovery mode.
1u. Flashing custom ROMs is a great way to gain more control over your device!
ROM Manager: 1. (n.) An application used to perform a variety of root-only tasks such as creating a nandroid, downloading a ROM straight to your Thunderbolt, partitioning your SD card in preparation for A2SD, etc.. ROM Manager is included in many ROMs, but it can be downloaded for free from the Android market.
1u. You can use ROM Manager to run a fix permissions script, which is a tool that can sometimes fix force close problems.
Root: 1. (n.) In Linux (which Android is based on), the equivalent of administrative privileges on the system level. Therefore, obtaining root on your Thunderbolt equates to obtaining access to administrative rights on your phone. 2. Root[ing]: (v.) The act of obtaining root access on your phone. This can be done through ADB or by using the newer and experimental one-click root methods.
1u. A root user can edit system files, which unlocks all the potential of custom ROMs.
2u. Rooting your phone is the best way to get a full, unhindered user experience.
Rosie: 1. (n.) HTC's Sense-based dock and launcher application. Rosie is the in charge of your homescreens, dock, app drawer, etc.. It can be replaced by other launchers, such as LauncherPro, ADW Launcher, or GO Launcher.
1u. Most of the things you can do on your homescreens are done within Rosie.
RUU: 1. (n.) ROM Upgrade Utility. A file which allows the rooted user to revert recovery from ClockworkMod to stock, return to an un-rooted state, and turn S-OFF to S-ON. An RUU should be used when all things fail, when root access is no longer desired (ie if you need to bring your phone into Verizon to have it replaced), etc.. The average user will probably never have to use an RUU.
1u. My Thunderbolt's USB port stopped working, so I used an RUU to make my phone look normal and brought it to Verizon to have it replaced
S
S-OFF: 1. (n.) Security-OFF. In order to successfully root a Thunderbolt, flash custom ROMs, and access most /system/ files, you must first obtain S-OFF (the Thunderbolt ships with S-ON, or Security-ON). When S-OFF is obtained, the Thunderbolt no longer scans flashed firmware, boot animations, splash boot pages, or kernels for official signatures, meaning the user is grated full control over his/her phone. You can check your S status by booting into hboot (bootloader).
1u. I gained S-OFF so that I could flash GINGERTH3ORY and bake cookies on my battery
Sense: 1. (n.) HTC's default user interface for most of their Android-based mobile devices. Basically, Sense controls the Thunderbolt's lockscreen, launcher, and theme/skin by default, unless a desensed ROM is used or a 3rd party application bypasses Sense's control. 2. (v.) [De]sense: The process of removing HTC's Sense from your Thunderbolt, allowing for even more customization and no stock feel whatsoever. Desensing is usually done at the ROM level, and most ROMs will note whether or not they are desensed or not.
1u. I personally dislike the default Sense lockscreen, so I installed WidgetLocker and got rid of it!
2u. BAMF Stripped is the perfect example of a desensed ROM.
Stock: 1. (n.) Simply put, the default settings for a the Thunderbolt. A stock Thunderbolt would be one that is un-rooted, unmodified, and otherwise untouched on a software level. Restoring to stock refers to revoking root access and turning S-OFF to S-ON.
1u. You might want to return your Thunderbolt to its stock settings before you bring it in to Verizon and claim you don't know why it caught fire that one time
Superuser: 1. (n.) An application used by root users to grant applications root access. Superuser allows users to select from a variety of different options, including remembering a specific application's root access, meaning it only needs to be cleared for root access once. Superuser is currently the easiest method for granting root access to applications.
1u. Superuser displays toast notifications whenever an application is granted root access.
Swap: 1. (n.) AKA Paging. A memory-management tool that creates a user-defined amount of virtual memory on the eMMC for Android to use in addition to the Thunderbolt's RAM. Using swap, Android can move larger amounts of data from RAM to the eMMC, allowing for more RAM to be free at any given time. Data is exchanged between the RAM and the swap partition based on size and priority. In theory, using swap will increase your Thunderbolt's performance because the RAM is free more often and in larger quantities.
1u. There are rumors that using swap will eventually kill your eMMC due to the fact that eMMC can only be written to a certain amount of times, however no one really knows the long term affects of many eMMC writes, so any claims should be viewed as speculation.
T
Titanium Backup: 1. (n.) A popular root-only application that contains many tools that a root user may want/need to use. Titanium Backup's main function is to create a backup of a user's applications, application data, and system data on the SD card so that a user can clear their data, flash a new ROM, and then restore their backed-up applications and data to the new ROM. However, Titanium Backup can also be used to uninstall system applications, move applications to the SD card, and freeze/defrost applications. Titanium Backup can be downloaded for free from the Android market.
1u. Das BAMF ROMs include the free version of Titanium Backup.
Toast Notifications: 1. (n.) A notification which pops up (much like toast ) to display itself at the bottom of the screen. Many background applications will use toast notifications in order to alert the user to its activity.
1u. Superuser uses toast notifications to notify the user of applications which are being granted root access.
U
UI: 1. (abvr., n.) User Interface. On a stock Thunderbolt, Sense would be considered by most to be the UI, although HTC sometimes agrees and sometimes disagrees. Either way, the UI is usually a graphical, physical way for the user to manipulate the intangible software and hardware contained within a device. A UIs goal is to be simple, visually appealing, and user-friendly, while still maintaining functionality and advanced capability.
1u. Sense, the Thunderbolt's UI, can be almost entirely removed by flashing a version of BAMF Stripped.
V
Voltage: Used only in reference to Overclocking, see O. 1. (n.) Controls how many volts go to the CPU at different clock speeds. A lower voltage means longer battery life, but a voltage too low on a clock speed too high can lead to instability and system crashes. ; under- and over- are relative to stock CPU clocks.
1u. The stock CPU voltages consume battery life very quickly.
W
WIP: 1. (abvr., n.) Work In Progress. Usually used in reference to a ROM, implying that it is not currently finished, or in beta form.
=====================================
X
=====================================
Y
=====================================
Z
Zipalign: 1. (n.) A tool used by ROM developers that optimizes Android application files (.apk's). Essentially, zipaligning a ROM ensures that all applications are compressed relative to the start of the file. All the average user needs to know is that a zipaligned ROM means less RAM consumption, and that's always a good thing!
1u. Most of the popular Thunderbolt ROMs are zipaligned prior to their release.

Well that's it for now! I'll be updating this daily for a while (until I run out of stuff to update it with). I'll keep it constantly maintained, and look out for a Frequently Asked Questions thread coming soon!
And just as a footnote guys, I really don't know that much about Android. I created this for myself just as much as I created it for the good of the community, and throughout writing it I learned a lot (you really think I knew what the hell deodex meant? dalvik cache? chyeah, okay). So if you learn something from this, pay it forward, help someone else with the new knowledge you've acquired! I'm totally open to corrections to current entries or even to entirely new entries, just post your thoughts below
ENJOY!!!
Here is a running list of the entries which I'm not sure are totally accurate (I'm actually not sure if any of the entries are totally accurate, but these are the ones I'm sure aren't). If you think something should be changed with one of these, well, you're probably right, so let me know

For your ADB entry...
SDK = Software Development Kit
adb is located in platform-tools directory.
Suggestions: Hboot, MR
edit: for thoroughness purposes, those should have their own entries

Great dictionary for the entry level person. Wanted to double check any new terms coming from my OG droid. Needed clarification on radios and HTC specific terms. Thanks.

Can I suggest a couple of entry edits which might make this dictionary a little more accurate? Feel free to edit to fit language and format...
CDMA: a.k.a Channel Division Multiple Access: This is the wireless air interface for Verizon, Alltel, Sprint, US Cellular, the virtual carrier Boost Mobile, many portable phones, as well as many satellite uplinks and downlinks. In function, it all devices hosted "talk" to the tower through an assigned code, or language, simultaneously. As opposed to LTE/GSM technologies, which "talk" to the tower based on an assigned frequency and/or time slot. Imagine it like this: the tower knows all the languages on earth and can hear them all at the same time... and speaks them all at the same time. You phone in a particular cell speaks an assigned language so to avoid other phones speaking the same language in the same cell. All handsets are "heard" at the same time, but as distance increases, the handset must "shout", or broadcast stronger, to be heard as well as other devices in the cell, hence the sometimes shocking drain on a CDMA device battery when on a cell's edge.
CDMA2000: A Quallcomm patented communictions technology based on the CDMA mode of air access. Specifically, this pertains to the methods and protocols which towers and handsets use to communicate with each other. Subsets of CDMA2000 would be 1XRTT, EVDO rev.0, EVDO rev.A, EVDO rev.B (not implemented currently).
If any of that is useful, feel free to include it.

[APP][4.1+][ROOT] User Management - Simple multi user helper

User Management
Dropbox link - While it's available on Dropbox, I'd really prefer it if you would use the Google Play option, as it help me keep statistics on device usage, and allows you to send error reports in case of problems
As recently discovered, Jelly Bean contains experimental and unofficial multi user support.
I've written an app for rooted Jelly Bean devices that allows anyone to use a simple GUI interface to do the following, without even touching the command line:
Create a user
View list of existing users
Rename users
Delete users
Switch to another user
The Primary user can be renamed, but not deleted. I disabled its deletion as it near-bricks the device, as detailed here (along with fix if you somehow manage it).
There is a donate version as well, but I won't be linking to that as it seems to be against the rules.
NOTICE: The SD Card permissions are required to rename the users. I couldn't find a way to save to the file system, so I read the user's file using the cat shell command, edited it with the new name, saved it to the SD Card and then used the cat command to overwrite the initial file. It's hacky, but it works.
I'd appreciate it if you could try out the app, perhaps buy it if you like it
Comments/suggestions are always welcome
As of now, the only way to switch back to the Primary user is if you hold down the power button and select the Primary user from there. This is because root access does not persist for any app, including Superuser itself across different accounts.

FAQ
What commands were used?
All were executed in a # (root) shell
To create a user (leave the quotes in if the username being create has a space. Single word names don't need them):
Code:
pm create-user "user name"
To delete a user (replace <user-id> with the user's ID):
Code:
pm remove-user <user-id>
To list all users:
Code:
pm list-users
To switch to another user (replace <user-id> with the user's ID):
Code:
am switch-user <user-id>
To rename a user:
There is no command for this. I used the cat command to read the user's xml file (/data/system/users/<user-id>.xml) into a string array, replaced the user name, saved the file to the SD Card and used the cat command again to overwrite the original file. To reboot after the rename I used:
Code:
reboot
What could come handy is setting profiles for personal n General usage, most people use various call hiding, media hiding apps to hide personal stuff, the ideal way will be to unlock the phone with two patterns at the screen lock level, one pattern unlock for general profile the other for personal use where your personal call logs, media for gets unlocked automatically, there's an app call switch me, but it requires rebooting which is not practically usable

This is really not what the app was designed for. This app was meant to be a simple GUI interface to try out the limited multi user support without having to go to a terminal emulator or adb each time you wanted to do something like create or modify a user. The features you request should be implemented by Google themselves, as they likely will be in upcoming upgrades, and not by a third party app.
Any other comments/suggestions from anybody?

The third screenshot does show the user selection screen. You can tap on any one of the users, and a Context Menu shows up allowing you to rename, switch to, and delete that user.
Here is a screenshot of the menu:
This app does not start up on boot. Once booted, you must manually use the Primary account to open the app. This is because the app is simply meant to allow you to create and manage the users without using the terminal with a nice GUI, not attempt to replace or provide functionality that can only come from Google.
One suggestion: Landscape mode

You may want to look at UserDetailSettings.java in the Settings app for the package manager code to enable/disable apps per user.
https://android.googlesource.com/platform/packages/apps/Settings/+/jb-release/src/com/android/settings/users/UserDetailsSettings.java
Not sure if it's easy or not but your app driven by a nfc tags open some interesting scenario like when i give the phone to my wife and she say: "oh, what a mess my iphone have few icons..."
or a shared phone usage for team ... or something like the chamaleon gui that when I arrive at home i switch the user from the profession usage to the private ones. Should be nice.
Is this doable?

Yes. Both of these are doable. However, this isn't the purpose of the app. Though considering the amount of requests I've received for such features, I'll be making another app that does all this and more very soon.
So other than creating/naming etc is there any functionality like choosing apps/restrictions for accounts at this stage?
works as advertised keeps all apps from primary user on the guest accounts they just don't see any info becuase its like just installing them. Good job.

Well, @bradymobile did post a link to the source code of a User Specific Settings screen a few posts back. However, this appears to be in accessible from the normal Settings menu, and so I'm currently looking for the correct intent to open it up. Beyond that, you can use Nova or Apex as the launcher for the guest user(s), and hide all the apps you don't want to be visible there.
on latest cm10 the user management app doesnt seem to be able to gain root. In fact, even superuser isnt granted root once you switch to an account other than the primary. suerpuser denies itself and the user mangement app.

This is because apparently root doesn't persist across user accounts. The only way to switch back to the primary account is by using the power menu options. I haven't quite figured out why the root won't persist. It happens to all apps that need root.

that is interesting. i would ask if the superuser permissions have changed upon switch but obviously you're not rooted so you cant tell. Following closely so god luck and thanks for the dev!

[DATABASE] Best Root Apps [Updated 03 nov]

Most of you might be very much familiar with the rooting procedure. Its the process of giving yourself superuser permissions (ex - administrator in windows xp ).
If you are using a custom rom, then there is no need to specifically root your phone. But if you are using stock roms, then there is a guide to root in the forums.
Once rooted, you can now take your own decisions for your device which include improving system performance or flashing custom roms using cwm recovery or using any of these below listed apps. Use it wisely, as playing with your device performance can have damaging effects.
I AM NOT AT ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE DONE TO YOUR DEVICE BY YOU.
Moving on, many of the rooted-on-stock and custom rom users might already know most of these apps and their uses, so this thread is for the beginners who have just rooted their devices.
Further, most of these apps are available in the playstore (mostly paid, but if you want the cracked versions, you can find them in the internet.
So here are some of the apps that might be useful for you. I will also update this apps list as soon as, I find more useful apps.

Flashing with Mobile ODIN does NOT increase your custom kernel flash counter or make the yellow warning triangle appear.
For discussion and support: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
- MANUAL -
Flashing with Mobile ODIN is easy. You start by starting the app and the app will check your system has everything it needs to continue (like root). It may need to download an additional package, so it is advised you have Wi-Fi available.
Now you should see the main Mobile ODIN screen. It will list a set of partitions. Clicking a partition will allow you to select a file from your SD card to flash to that partition. Do not worry about selecting the wrong file - Mobile ODIN will not let you. Separate files (named after the partition) as well as .tar and .tar.md5 files are supported.
From the desktop ODIN you may be used to "PDA", "PHONE", and "CSC" buttons. All three of these buttons have been replaced by the "Open file ..." button. This button will open the file you select from the SD card, and find all the partitions it can flash inside that file. So if you select a .tar file containing kernel and modem, the Kernel and Modem partitions will be set up to use that .tar file for flashing.
Now that we have selected what we want to flash, if you have the Pro version you can proceed to the EverRoot section. The EverRoot options allows you to root your firmware while it is being flashed. Never again will you be without root! Select here which apps you want to inject in the firmware that is being flashed.
Now that we are all done selecting partitions and configuring EverRoot, we continue to "Flash firmware". Mobile ODIN will gather all the information it needs and perform the flash. Before starting, however, it will check that your battery level is over 50%, and if applicable offer to verify MD5 checksums on the files you have selected to flash. If all is well, it will reboot into recovery mode, and flash the firmware you have selected.

SETCPU for Root Users
Description
Supercharge your Android device with SetCPU. A must-have tool for root users.
Automate SetCPU with profiles! SetCPU allows you to set up powerful profiles to change your settings under certain conditions, such as what app is running, when the phone is asleep or charging, when the battery level drops below a certain point, when the phone's temperature is too high, or during certain times of day. See the screenshots for examples of how you might set up profiles.
SetCPU's wide feature set make it useful to Android beginners and enthusiasts alike. Accelerate your processor to unleash your phone's true multitasking potential, or dial your CPU's speed down to save battery.
SetCPU also includes a "voltage control" menu, available to certain devices with custom kernels that support it, to control undervolting to save even more battery. Keep in mind that undervolting is only available for certain kernels.
Recent Changes:
Additional permission: Read logs is used for efficient app condition checking. That is currently all it's used for.
3.0.0:
Profiles tab
- Completely rewrote profiles.
- Older profiles will automatically be converted into new profiles.
- Added app and day of week in addition to the older conditions, and more are coming.
- Profiles now support combining conditions under logical trees, with nestable "and," "or," and "not" operators available. It is now possible to easily build complex profiles that take the place of multiple profiles in the older version.
- Actions can now be selected individually.
- Profiles can now be marked as "non-exclusive," which means they will not block profiles with lower priorities from evaluating. In this case, the profiles with lower priorities will perform only actions which have not been performed by profiles with higher priorities. SetCPU will keep evaluating profiles until it reaches an "exclusive" profile that evaluates as true.
- All number selectors in profiles are now in the style of the frequency selector in the main tab.
- The new file extension for exported profile settings is ".setcpu.json."
- To prevent ambiguous situations, it's no longer possible to select priorities that have been used by other profiles.
- The CPU temperature sensor on OMAP4 and some other devices should now be supported for profiles. The option will appear if available.
- Notifications are now set as an action per profile and can now be non-persistent.
- SetCPU will still use the main screen as a "default profile" to set if no other profiles are active. It is now possible to specify an alternate default profile by creating an exclusive profile with no conditions at priority 0.
- SetCPU now asks for a file name before backing up profiles to storage.
- It is now possible to share profiles without having the internal/external storage mounted.
Main tab
- IO scheduler selection has been added via a drop down menu in the main tab.
Bugfixes
- Fixed a bug where the short benchmark always reported 0 ms.
- Fixed the labels in the pie graph in system info.
- Fixed some common crashes.
Permissions:
Root: SetCPU needs root permissions to modify the CPU speed and other settings.
Start at boot: SetCPU will start a profiles service at boot, if enabled. It also sets default boot settings, if enabled. SetCPU does not run in the background if profiles are not enabled, and becomes inactive after settings, if any, are applied.
Wake lock: This prevents the phone from sleeping while stress testing and benchmarking.
Write external storage: SetCPU needs to read from and write to the SD card or internal storage to back up profiles.
Read phone state: The "in call" condition needs this to determine if the user is making a phone call or not, and trigger the profile if the user wants to.

[root] CHAINFIRE3D
Description
Chainfire3D - Take control of your GPU (OpenGL) !
Take control over your GPU!
Chainfire3D is an intermediary OpenGL driver. What does that mean? It means that Chainfire3D sits between your apps and the graphics drivers, and can intercept and/or change commands between the two. It has some built-in functions, and can be further extended with plugins to provide extra functionality.
!! For Froyo and Gingerbread ONLY. NOT COMPATIBLE with Honeycomb/Ice Cream Sandwich/Jelly Bean !!
!! Chainfire3D is for 1ghz+ devices only !!
!! ROOT is required for this program, as well as a writable /system partition. S-OFF is also required on HTC devices !!
Features include reducing texture size and quality to reduce memory use and potentially increase game performance, as well as increasing memory use potentially increase performance.
If you also install the (experimental) EGL driver, AND your GPU supports it, AND you have the Pro version, you can enable 4xMSAA or 16xMSAA on a per-app bases. This can drastically improve image quality!
Be sure to check the thread on XDA for available plugins !
Chainfire3D has been tested on:
- HTC HD2
- Samsung Galaxy S
- Samsung Galaxy Tab 7"
- Samsung Galaxy S II
- Samsung Galaxy Note
- Samsung Epic 4G
- Motorola Atrix 4G
- Motorola Droid 2
- LG Optimus 2X
- Google Nexus S
Many users are running Chainfire3D on devices not listed here - it's likely to work on all modern devices. So far nobody has reported a failed install, so that's good. Doesn't mean problems can't happen.
!! There is some risk involved installing the driver. Your device may not boot. If you have CWM, it would be prudent to create a backup before installing !!

SUPERUSER
This is meant to replace Superuser (if installed), you use either one or the other. You cannot combine them. Statements that this breaks Superuser are therefore completely nonsensical.
NOTICE: A SPECIAL PROCEDURE IS NEEDED FOR UNINSTALLATION. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE APP, DO *NOT* JUST UNINSTALL IT, YOU *WILL* LOSE ROOT.
Superuser access management runs through a so called "su binary". There can be only one of these at a time. So if you install SuperSU, your previous superuser access management solution will no longer operate. So if you want to switch back: (1) Open that application, and search for an option for it to install/update/replace the "su binary". (2) Confirm root-using apps are using the superuser solution you want. (3) Uninstall SuperSU.

BATTERY CALIBRATION
Description
Calibrate your battery when you think it's miscalibrated.
Requirements: Android 2.1+ | Root permissions
Calibration needs to be done after flashing a new ROM, but you can calibrate any time you think your battery is miscalibrated. This program does it by removing the batterystats.bin system file. The OS generates a new clean batterystats file soon, thus any fake information from the previous ROM is removed.
It's suggested, but not necessary, to let the phone fully discharge after calibration, then charged to 100% without break.
The app shows your actual battery status, and only allows you to start the calibration (i.e. removes the file) when it's fully charged, unless you force earlier calibration.
The voltage meter can be useful too. Full charge is around 4200mV.
There is an option to beep when 100% is reached so you don't have to closley follow the changes.

Sixaxis Controller
Description
*** Caution: This app is not for the faint-hearted!! ***
Please read all instructions carefully.
Not all devices are supported, therefore it is strongly recommended that you try the 'Sixaxis Compatibility Checker' (available for free in the Android Market) before purchasing this app.
Finally the wait is over... The ultimate gaming experience awaits! Now you can play games on your phone the way they were meant to be played! Sixaxis Controller allows you to use your Sixaxis and DualShock 3 controllers in many of your favourite games and applications.
*** IMPORTANT ***
- ROOT access is required!!!
- Due to the way pairing is done with the controllers, you need to manually pair your controller with the PC utility 'SixaxisPairTool' (available on the website) and a mini-USB cable. Android 3.1+ users can also pair directly on their devices via USB.
- It is highly recommended that you use an ORIGINAL controller. Many after market controllers will not work with this app. If you get a 'Client connected: 1' message, but the lights on your controller continue to flash, it is almost certainly not an original Sony controller.
- Be sure to read the instructions in the help menu carefully.
Features:
- Up to four Sixaxis and DualShock 3 controllers supported at once.
- Support as a native gamepad in Android 3.1+ devices. Full support for analog sticks and analog triggers.
- Keyboard emulation. Map all buttons and sticks to almost any key available in Android.
- Mouse emulation. Configure a button to activate the mouse pointer on devices that support mice (most tablets, and many phones should work).
- Touch emulation allows you to map buttons and analog sticks to the screen. Play all your favourite games with full analog support, even those without built-in controller support!

Important:
On PCs with Windows 7/8, if your device can not connect via usb, you need to install the adb driver. You can learn more in documentation.
Support device with android version below 7 may be limited.
To connect to the device by IP, first connect it via usb to the program and click the Enable Network Debugging button.
When you connect the device for the first time, the program will prompt you to install the ACBridge application.
This is my service application for android to provide data exchange between the device and ADB AppControl on a PC. It must be installed in order to be able to display application icons and their names, instead of their packages names like com.android.app. You can also use the program without ACBridge, but you will lose some of the cool features (no icons and no application names). Now ACBridge comes with the main program, but in the future I plan to add it to the Play Market.
The program has an Extended version with interesting features.
It was created especially for those users who like the program and want more features.

Thank you for this awesome tool. So far its been great. I used it to uninstall some apps and it worked great.
You are welcome! I'm just getting started - there will be many interesting updates ahead
Awesome work thank you, just sent pm.
thank you bro. hope this project will grow
Thanks you. I am currently working on an update server for the program and the ability to send files directly to the device by two clicks.
If you have any ideas you'd like to see in ADB AppControl, please share them with me. There is a chance that they will be implemented
Keep it up:good:
Nice interface, easy to use and with mandatory details so user can easily do what they want to do. Feature request for application data.
Thanks,

Thanks. Application data is ultimate feature. Now I know only one way to do it without root - adb backup. But this does not work for all applications (depends on the app developer). I will continue my research in this direction.
Hi OP. How do I use this program to debloat my built-in Android TV?

It's very easy if you know which apps you need to disable. First, read the User Guide and enable ADB debugging on your TV. Next, connect ADB AppControl to your device and disable the bloatware applications. You win!
I ran "shell top" in the console window and it locked up. Had to force close. Love the app tho!

In new updates you will love this app even more
Now the program does not support realtime output in the console and you may to wait 60 seconds for terminate operation by timeout.
But just write a shell in the console and your problem will be solved in a new comandline window. You can even have multiple shell windows open, which is great. By the way, you could learn about this from the user manual (and many more interesting things).
It would be cool to be able to set permissions.
Summer ends, but the heat continues -
Meet the new update of ADB AppControl 1.4.3!
ADB AppControl 1.4.2 update is now available!
I'll start with the most interesting - the program now has its own server. You no longer have to download updates in the archives because the program will do everything by itself. In addition, I wrote a web installer (only 30 KB in size), it is very convenient to install the program through it - you always know that you will get the latest version. Another innovations, that Windows 7 users will love - now the program itself installs android usb driver.
In fact, there are a lot of changes.
Now you can send files directly to your device and it's convenient.
the updated ACBridge, which is finally working on android 6 (a great excuse to blow dust off old devices, isn't it?).
Extended Version users will get some cool new features. Among them is a beautiful dark theme. Thanks to their support, the program got its own server (and the software was written for it)!
Thank you guys for your support!
CHANGELOG:

AppDash: Tag, sort & backup
AppDash is an app management tool which shows detailed information about your apps and allows tagging, backup and restore.

AppDash has been in development for over two years and incorporates everything that I've personally wanted out of an app manager. I've put a great deal of effort into the user interface, with the goal of making it convenient and intuitive, simple yet detailed, with a polished and pleasant look and feel. I hope you enjoy and find it useful. Please leave your feedback here in this thread, as the app is still under heavy development.
FEATURES:
• Tag your apps, perform batch actions, see screentime by tag, share app lists
• Backup and restore apps
• Analyze, extract and install APK, APKS, XAPK, APKM and split apk files
• Deep app info, including manifest, components, screentime, install/update history and metadata
• Search, sort and filter apps
Explore
See new and updated apps, quick summaries of tags, app usage, storage, unused and recently uninstalled apps
Apps
A searchable list of installed apps. Long press or tap the app icon to select one or more apps for batch actions, such as backup or uninstall
Tags
Another way to visualize your apps, you can create up to 30 customizable tag groups, and easily add or remove apps. Perform batch actions, such as backup or create sharable lists of apps.
The autotag feature will categorize your apps automatically. You can easily delete these tags and create your own, or modify them in any way you wish.
Backups
A searchable, sortable, filterable list of backups, including batch actions. First, you must choose a directory where AppDash will store your backups. It is strongly recommended to create a new directory for AppDash.
For root users, AppDash offers full backup and restore of apps, app data, external app data and expansion (OBB) files. Please note that some apps don't like backup and restore, so use at your own risk. For non-root users, only the apk will be backed up, no data.
For both root and non-root users, you can enable the auto backup feature, which will automatically back up apps whenever they are updated.
Tools
The Tools screen allows quick access to app history, usage and tools to install or analyze APK files. AppDash can handle many formats such as APK, APKS, XAPK and APKM.
Navigation and UI
AppDash is a new class of app that allows deep navigation. Each tab works independently, with its own backstack, allowing you to multitask and compare app details between tabs. You can always return to the beginning by tapping the icon in the bottom navigation bar twice or with the back button or gesture.
You can think of the Explore tab as home, pressing back enough times will always bring you back to Explore before exiting the app.
Almost everything int he app does something, so tap or long press icons, cards or text within the app and there is a good chance something will happen.
App Details
All the info you could ever want about an app, with a bottom drawer full of actions such as launch, backup, uninstall, share, extract and more. View internal details such as permissions, manifest and app components.
History
Maintains a list of app events. The longer AppDash is installed, the more info will be shown. On first launch, it only shows first install time and most recent update. From the time AppDash is installed, it will also keep track of version codes, uninstalls, updates, reinstalls and downgrades.
Usage
Get details about screen time and number of launches. By default, a weekly average is shown. Tap on the bar graph to show details for each day. You may show usage details for individual apps, or for tags.
Large Apps
Shows all apps using at least 100MB of storage. For root users, you can also quickly wipe cache to increase disk space.
Install APKs
Launches the system file chooser so you can select one or more APK, APKS, XAPK or APKM files to install.
APK Analyzer
Similar to the App Details screen, this scans the selected APK, APKS, XAPK or APKM file to get deep information about the app. You may also launch the APK Analyzer from most file explorers by clicking "Open with" and selecting AppDash.
Privacy
As with all my apps, there are no ads and no user data is collected or monetized. The only revenue is from subscription or in-app purchase. There is a free trial, but you must purchase the app or a subscription to continuing using AppDash for more than seven days. This charge is necessary to support development and expenses.
Beautiful app flar2! Is there a way to "select all" in the Backups tab yet? The autotag feature is pretty neat!
Finally a powerful Titanium Backup alternative is here. And much more, as I see.
Huge hopes and much anticipated. In no time everybody will use it.
And this, delivered by the best guy.
A great news in Android root world.
Thank you, Flar, and good luck!

I was hoping to avoid select all, but so far everyone is asking for it.
I added "select all" to the latest version
I'm going to make a series of short videos to highlight some of the lesser known features of AppDash.
Here's the first one, demonstrating how to create a sharable list of apps:
Will test next backup, cheers
Was going to ask if it backed up appdata, but then i actually read the OP
p.s. what ill be testing/comparing it against is in my sig
I've been waiting for a replacement for the tired old Titanium Backup.
Backed up Messages and all SMS data, cleared all the storage, lost all of my texts, as expected (they go way back).
Restored in seconds. Perfect.
Thank you!
I didn't see a way to schedule backups of updated apps and/or app data. Is this possible or planned for later?
I hope you don't mind some (hopefully) constructive criticism.....
Hit the backup icon and suddenly you're back at the App List tab when you start to select apps to backup... confusing
When you get there there's no obvious button to select all, which is what most people would do, before deselecting the odd app they maybe didn't want or didn't backup well. Instead you have to select an app before you can select all, this is counterintuitive. Also if you did want to filter apps once you have selected all, the filter option is gone once you select all..
Selection is signalled by replacing the apps icon, which is a bad idea, I know the icons, I don't know generic blue circles. App icons should never be hidden/replaced.
There's no obvious sign once backup begins in the GUI, none. I finally noticed a nondescript icon in the pulldown, but by that time I'd hit the backup icon at least twice...once I figured out what the backup icons n is that is. Perhaps label the icons or make that an option? Anyways, once I found the backup icon in the pulldown, and expanded it, there was still no progress...just said it was backing up 171 apps. Me, I like to know where a process is, never more so than a backup one
Why when on the backup tab (sorry, what you assume is the backup tab, but is actually the app list tab...on that front, I wouldn't have backup switch back to another tab, confusing) are there icons to delete apps etc. Once you have signalled you intend to backup these are unnecessary and distracting and taking up space best used by task specific options
There was no sign in the pulldown the backup had completed. There was a sign of something having been done as there was a list apps now in the backup tab, but no "backup completed"
There was no app count in the backup tab to show how many apps were backed up. Mine looked short. I counted them manually...only 42 of 171 apps were backed up.
Will test future versions. Have and use some of your other apps....
Some suggestions from me:
- When about to make a backup apk is always pre selected. Can it be done so that when one already has the last version of an app backed up, the apk is not pre selected and only data and external data is pre selected.
- in the backup dialog there is a very nice icon and text describing what is the last app backup and one knows if he has a backup of the last version of an app. But can you make it colored (red if no current version backup exists and green if it does for example)
- I use GMD Gesture Control. One of my most favorite apps. It is an old app but it still works fine. The apk is attached here. AppDash cannot make data backup for this app. I always get "data backup failed" message for it. Could you please check this.
- share only shares the app. Can you make it so that one can share the app, and/or the app data in one backup file for easy import and in sepatete files. This is very, very useful.
- there is an option "delete old backups". How old? Can one set this? For instance older then... What does it delete?
AppDash is an amazing product. We are lucky to have you, Flar.
Forgot to mention
- besides select all, it is good to have invert selection, exclude tag(s) from selection, include tag(s) to selection and such.
I can make some of the suggested changes, mainly around UI.
My hesitance around select all is that I'm concerned that many phones brands will flag the app for battery consumption and blacklist it or kill the process. And it will use up a ton of storage. It's better to be selective and only backup key apps.
I honestly do not want people to backup 170 apps at once, it's something that is very likely to fail for reasons beyond my control.
It's extremely resource intensive to compress, encrypt and copy several gigs of data.

I can probably add this. It will only make sense for backing up data for root users, as the autobackup feature will be sufficient in other cases.

I understand your concerns
I'll just point out that my current (and for several years) backup strategy has been over 170 apps weekly backed up and restored from the time i had my old Note 4 till now on my Pixel 2 XL. My current back up is around 4.4Gb and never failed (apart from a single backup app bug, that was fixed a year ago)
Part of my ability to fairly evaluate ROM's when testing is that i can apply the exact same apps to any ROM i test.
I realise this is probably outside of the average users needs, but im just pointing out, its entirely doable and stable with my current backup app.
I will keep my eye on the project though, and wish you the best. I still appreciate your other works, Button Mapper saved my sanity so many times in the past, and EX kernel manager still lives on my phone
@tiho5
GMD data backup fails for me too, but I'm pretty sure it can be fixed.
Thanks all, keep the suggestions coming.
I actually never have backed up my apps, and never used Titanium Backup or others, so not sure how people really use them.
My use cases for this app are more around seeing what apps have been updated, viewing app info, checking app usage and getting rid of apps I don't use.

Appreciate all your work
Select all is needed for other actions too. I could want to clear cache from all apps from a certain tag for example.
Wipe data, restore data to a bunch of apps is often what I need to do for a set of apps in 2 of my tags. We must have these options. AppDash is a powerful, potent app manager and we have to be able to do batch actions like these.
I know you'd want the auto backup to work and therefore AppDash must not be killed. However to me this is less important than the rest of capabilities it may have. Flar, I don't think AppDash will get killed as these batch actions are always done when AppDash is active on the screen, never in the background.
