Android isn't fully open-source - Android General

Let me start off by saying, I love Android, and shall forever remain loyal to it.
Now, every single version of Android has been open-source, and free to all. This has allowed Android to grow in succession and recognition.
Though this may be, one version of Android will forever remain locked away, Honeycomb. For this reason, Android will never be truly open-source.
No flaming needed, just an observation.

And to backup my claim:
In early 2011, Google chose to
temporarily withhold the Android
source code to the tablet-only
Honeycomb release, the reason,
according to Andy Rubin in an official
Android blog post, was because
Honeycomb was rushed for
production of the Motorola Xoom,
[132] and they did not want third
parties creating a "really bad user
experience" by attempting to put
onto smartphones a version of
Android intended for tablets. [133]
The source code was once again
made available in November 2011
with the release of Android 4.0. [134]

How does it matter what device someone uses to reply if their information is correct?
Unless we are assuming that because apple mislead people sometimes that their devices must do the same.
Just seems an odd response to a factual reply.

But it's still odd to criticise a persons post based solely on their choice of os, which was what I meant.

I believe you are mistaken my friend. Honeycomb source code was technically released with ICS as it was built from Honeycomb. Google never made a separate Honeycomb source code release.
Side note- Yes, I have an iPad, but it was a gift. Would I love to have a Transformer or Nexus tablet? Yes, but why spend money when I have something that already works.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

It doesn't matter how the code was released, you aren't someone who gets to say "Well because honeycomb source code wasn't released on it's own it doesn't count!". You're splitting hairs just to argue.

I'm not trying to argue. Google never tagged the releases for Honeycomb. It was officially never released, unlike every other version of Android. If ICS wasn't built off of Honeycomb, it would have never been "released".
You say it got release, doesn't matter the manner.
I say it didn't, because it wasn't an official release and the code was never tagged.
We're never going to agree.

What is the point of this thread? Android is open source, and who cares when/how honeycomb was released, and last time I checked iOS was about as open source as Fort Knox, so why make idiotic complaints about Android that aren't even true while posting from the most locked down device in history?

I don't think this is impossible at all. It won't be official or legal, but as Android was put on iPhones, I think the opposite is perfectly possible. One blog I read today even implied the possibility of the Apple A5 being the same processor as the A9 in the xoom, but I really don't know how correct that is.
The problem is that I don't see anyone bothering to do this, but I wish they would. It would be awesome to have access to some iOS-exclusive apps.
I dont think Apple would have any problems with this at all.

the A9 processor you're referring to is the Cortex-A9 processor, which is used for all dual core processors. all the new high end phones you see now are powered by ARM Cortex-A9 processor (including iP4, Atrix, Bionic, etc)
On top of the Cortex-A9 lies the SoC chip,
The A5 is an SoC developed by (intrinsity, samsung, apple)
The Tegra 2 is an SoC developed by NVIDIA
Hope that clears things up.

And how, if I may ask?
The developer would need iOS source to start with. How about rewriting drivers, functions etc?
Android can be used on iOS devices but it doesn't mean the opposite could be possible.. The OSes are just so diffrent
..but yeah, it'd be cool to have a device open to ALL platforms and usable with them.
Maybe someday VMware can do this

I thought it was up, but the Cyanogen team was going to have it donated to charity if they won, i'm not sure though.
ahh ok i had heard that it was removed because it was causing more problems than actually promoting development like it was supposed to . anyway i hope CM (or to be honest anyone ) get a port done soon, i want to see what this thing can do when not crippled by HP's stupidities ( printing, bluetooth pairing , adhoc tethering ,the damn arrow keys etc etc ). I dont blame webOS i blame HP for trying to lock the device to only work like they want and with their things only( kinda like apple which why i never liked apple).

I am on too slow of a connection to download and mess with it but just from reading the notes it looks like the press conference REALLY left a lot of important features unmentioned. Another thing I found odd was that there was zero mention of the "one OS to rule them all." I would have thought Google would make a bigger deal about this being a unifying version of the OS.

no worries, mates, as far as i have read the statements of google, ICS will definitely come for the NS! of course they have to bring it, i'd buy an f*ing iphone, if my not even 1 year old developer phone was no longer supported! (ok, it was a bluff, i'd never buy that brick, but i'd be really pissed! )
the last thing i read about it was, that they first of all work on the NS-rollout...though i don't think, that it will happen before the galaxy nexus is published...
Edit: "Google Android Chief Andy Rubin stated that Ice Cream Sandwich is on schedule to roll out “a couple of week after” the Galaxy Nexus arrives in the marketplace." -> that may take some time, maybe a christmas present?

It has to come out for ANY phone before that can happen. Besides we will be the second phone to get it so i'm imagining we will have an official before there is ever a port, so just settle down :

WebOS on Droid Charge

With the announcement of webOS moving to a open source platform, am I the only one wishing for a port of webOS to the Charges' hardware? Sure its not the most powerful phone or neither does it have the strongest developer base, but I'm still hoping for it one day. This is coming from a person who had a Palm Pre Plus prior to my D'Charge, so therefore I'm very familiar with the way webOS works and I still today miss it the fluidity of the platform. So let me know, am I alone?
In theory, I suppose it could be done, as WebOS is also Linux based. However, it would take a LOT of work-I think the time put into such a project would not equal the number of people who would want to use it.

In all honesty I would like to see ICS before I would like to see WebOS, but I feel like these ports would be coming from different teams. From one corner their will be developers working to get ICS to all non-nexus devices and in the other corner their will be people working to get WebOS on android devices and once its done here it will be picked up by other developers and tweaked to work on the particular device they're developing for.

Possible? Yes. Probable? Probably not. Due to technical and legal issues.
Even if the technical challenges including reverse engineering closed source drivers is done the build would likely be kept private as Microsoft lawyers can and will make your life suck. Even if despite all the previous if you wanted to release it you would not be permitted to on XDA or many other sites since you would be in an, at best, legally gray area.

Sorry, it wasn't wp8 but it was wp7.x which is still closed source and is definitely hosted on XDA without issue. There is an entire sub forum dedicated to Windows Phone 7 ROMs for the HTC HD2. I get what you're saying but something being closed source obviously hasn't stopped XDA from hosting. Now, that being said, Adam Outler found a way to boot from an SD card which would make the process a hell of a lot easier.
