4.0.4 update when im already on 4.04 please help - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Here's the deal. I'm getting the 4.0.4 ota notification when I'm already on stock 4.0.4. The update is only 1mb...I left the country to go to Europe for vaca and since I was waiting for the jelly bean update I kept pressing the check for updates button ... but then the notification to update to 4.0.4 popped up. Should I install the update? Could it be some virus or some sort of mistake? Pleas help
Thanks
.

This is happening to many people with I9020A. It is not a mistake, it is not a virus. Apparently, it will ready your phone for the 4.1.1 OTA. For further reading, go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1783989

I got the 4.0.4 update (1mb) also then went to Jelly Bean by doing this:
Pulling the SIM or going into airplane mode with WIFI on is best also. Make sure your wifi is a strong signal. Just reiterating what was said here a thousand times. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1736645
If you are not on stock do this.

T-Mobile G2x Gingerbread OTA Update Resumes

After a not-so-smooth attempt at rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread for T-Mobile G2X users, experience-breaking bugs ran rampant throughout users’ phones prompting T-Mobile and LG to suspend updates. It took quite a while for them to get things ironed out, actually, as I almost forgot that the T-Mobile G2x even exists. In any case, the Gingerbread rollout is back on for those who are sick of frozen treats. Alongside Gingerbread, you’re also apparently getting improved battery life for your troubles. Yay! Get to the link ahead for the full instructions from LG. [LG via Droid Dog]
As of December 5, T-Mobile will restart the rollout of the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Over-The-Air (OTA) update!
If you would like to update your software before receiving the OTA, please visit the LG website (link to: http://wwwstg.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/G2X-Driver/index.jsp) to update your device today.
The G2x Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) update includes the following benefits:
Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) OS
Improved battery life
Improved front-facing camera operation when using Qik record and share
Improved disabling of Car Home
Helps address unexpected reboots

So what if I was on GB, I flashed back to froyo, then I tried to flash back to GB but I got "installation aborted" when I tried, then I saw this and I unrooted and flashed stock recovery and I go to update via LG update tool and its telling me Im already on v21e when im 100% positive Im not? What do I do now?
Hey my sis has the G2x and she had a lot of problems with it so she installed GB on it a few months ago but it still froze alot. I dunno if it was official or not. Is this new update the same update?
yes, it is the same update
So i received this OTA update but when i click on the notification to try to update it it takes me to the clockwork mod recovery screen idk if this is supposed to happen. i never received the update, until now, so i rooted it but i kept the stock rom 2.2 i was just wondering if i would be able to update my device with it being rooted or if it being rooted is a problem.? idk if this happened to anyone else but input and help would be greatly appreciated.

You'll probably have to revert to stock recovery. TGA_Gunman's application in the development section let's you do it with one click.

+1 - OTA updates require stock recovery to be installed.
For those that are saying, "It's the same update".. how do you know there hasn't been any changes during a 5mo delay? I'm not saying it isn't the same update, but people just typing it on a computer screen doesn't make it true.

It doesnt make sence why would they just stop only to start the same garbage update again? They have to have fixed it some. Maybe it is still 2.3.3 but its gotta be different. I would have hoped that they would roll out the 2.3.4 that they used in italy for the o2x. At the very least they should have fixed the stupid camera. I could be wrong but it just doesnt make any sence to me

[Q] ICS Over The Air Update

Hello, I am using Nexus S 2.3.6, from Malaysia.
A few of my Malaysian friends already receive Over The Air update of ICS from Google. However, although I do check for "Settings -> System updates" all the times, I always saw "Your system is currently up to date".
Is there any additional settings I need to do, in order to receive official update from Google? I prefer not to do it manually myself by downloading the ROM.
I believe that Google stop rolling out the ota.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk
I keep wondering when the ICS OTA update will be released. I'm using an i9020a on at&t and I'm still stuck on the 2.3.4 update. When I got to check for an update it says that the system is up to date, even though most people have 2.3.6 on their NS's.
It's probably quicker and less painful to just download and update to the latest ROM yourself, especially if you're starting to check for system updates on a daily or less-than-daily basis.

I've tried that, and I'm still stuck on 2.3.4. Can't even get 2.3.6, let alone ICS.
Might as well flash one of the many AOSP or CM9 ROMs posted out here to be honest. How fast is AT&T in approving ROM updates?
I'm pretty sure that's part of what's holding it up despite the Canadian 9020As out there...
I've flashed Kalimochoaz's CM9 alphas a few days ago and it works like a charm.

Getting nexus S tomorrow, 2 questions.

I am getting i9023 nexus S tomorrow. I want to know 2 things,
1. Is ICS OTA available now or is it still "halted" by google?
2. If it is still not available I would like to have official 2.3.6 atleast. Is it complicated to manually upgrade to 2.3.6? Can you explain me a bit?
And secondly will I still get official OTA for ICS if I manually upgrade to 2.3.6?? A friend recently got the same phone and it had 2.3.3 out of the box so I am thinking mine will be same as well.
Btw I know you can manually have official ICS as well but I'll like to wait for it till google resumes the updates.
first , i don't know
second , yes , no compilcation , just in "about phone" there is "updated" , all automatic.

This is my first android phone, I will eventually root and all that tinkering but initially I want to have a simple experience.
option 3 the best one. at the time you finally root your phone you will regret not have done it before
1. ICS OTA is available. I don't think Google ever officially halted it and I think the news just said it was in a few specific areas temporarily. I got my ICS update about 2 days after the news said it was halted. I have a Nexus S i9020 though. I don't know if ICS is available to all Nexus S versions yet.
2. It is pretty simple to upgrade to 2.3.6 manually. What you do is you have to find the URL of the official update that Google pushes out. Then you download it into your phone, reset it holding some buttons, choose the file and click ok. More detailed instructions are here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1280785
This link gives you instructions to go from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6. DO NOT use that file if you are on 2.3.3. You will need the 2.3.3 to 2.3.6 file. The instructions will be the same though.
Here is a compilation of all of the i9023 official updates. 2.3.3 to 2.3.6 is in there as well as 2.3.3 to 4.0.3.

Thank you the first link shows how to flash which seems quite simple and the second thread has all the download files.
Btw can you tell me something about regional updates. Are they dependent on what country I am "in" or which country the phone was purchased from?
And can any i9023 owner comment on the status of ICS OTA?
Updates are based on the country the phone was purchased from.
Flashing official ROM doesnt void warranty right?
And how exactly does the phone "know" which country it belongs to? I mean arent nexus ROMS all global?
it looks the combination of SIM card and IP address (if available)
mainly the SIM card, it's how it chooses the phone language at first boot
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Flashing the official ROM won't void warranty since it can be flashed via the stock bootloader. It is officially available for the i9023. Feel free to download the update from your ROM to 2.3.6, then 2.3.6 to ICS. If you experience issues in ICS, i'd recommend doing a data/factory reset and, if needed, flashing the OTA again. Just be sure to backup as much as possible (can't backup app data/settings/saves without root, sadly).
Also, you won't be able to downgrade back to 2.3.x after you've flashed ICS without rooting too.
First thing root your phone, and after make a passion about this, search in forum, read, and install what you like, what you think is great for you, be prepared, you have a lot of work afther rooting, belive me.
Good luck.
Just flash stock ics full rom.
If you are concerned with warranty, just flash the stock 4.0.3 from google. However if you want improve battery life, you can flash the leaked 4.0.4, though rooting is required, and may void your warranty.
Hi, I have a Nexus S I9023 too and i just bought it 2 weeks ago... also i am from india but that doesn't matter... now for your questions...
1. ICS is available officially from Google, it's just that some users were experiencing problems so yes they halted the OTA but still it is available through the manual update.. and for your info... Manual update is exactly just the same (100%) as an OTA. Google themselves say that...
2.I myself had 2.3.3 installed from factory and could not get the OTA update... but then i could do it to 2.3.6 with the help of this thread..
Go to this link... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445635
and go to Full Roms and choose the 2.3.6 rom and flash it.. throught the instructions ton that thread..and to tell you again it is another official way to update and google also supports it...
and you will get the ICS OTA even after manually updating... it's just a normal update.. and for your info.. first i was also scared about updating but i just did it and it worked and for ICS i have ICS on my phone right now and i did it the same way as 2.3.6 just download the 4.0 file and do it the same way...
and for your info i am not getting any problems it is PERFECT THE BATTERY IS EVEN BETTER THAN GINGERBREAD.. AND FOR RECHECK I DID THE SAME ON MY UNCLE'S PHONE AND IT WORKED AWESOMEEE!!
AND IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY PROBLEMS JUST PM ME..
HOPE I HELPED..
EDIT: NEXUS S UPDATES AREN'T REGIONAL IT'S JUST DEPENDANT ON THE MODEL.. also the warranty is perfectly safe...
I agree with option 3. But you will have read and test a lot (this is why we don't have iPhones!! ).
Once you root and flash...you will notice you won't stop doing it!! We have the best damn developers!!

He knows that what u said in total was actually for his Info only.
LOL.
Thanks everyone just got my nexus. It's 2.3.3 and really happy with the out of box experience, super smooth.
As expected no OTA, now I am confused if I should update to 2.3.6 or 4.0.3.
I guess since this is my first android phone it seems appropriate I use GB for a while and perhaps get ICS when google resumes the OTA.
I updated to 2.3.6, quite a quick and painless procedure.
Can someone tell me if I can delete the zip file from the sd card now??
Yes you can.

ICS Update on Rooted Phone with alternative launcher?

Hello all,
I got a pleasant surprise push update today and after going online to research before attempting to update, it seems that this 06/25/12 update may very well be ICS!
Anyways,
Can anyone give some tips on flashing when you are rooted and have CWM running? Attempting the OTA update failed and I'm sure it is because upon reboot, CWM loads and the update then is "interrupted".
I'm now attempting through Kies but doesn't look promising.
Any help with this? I did do a full CWM ROM backup prior to attempting this.
Any help is appreciated...

Wasted of time is right! Seriously, why send a notification when it is not eve supported? On top of that, why show update on Kies as well only to find it simply will not install?
I have a highly modified phone with GB running just fine. Big mistake tonight to try this. I guess I was a bit too curious.
Anyways,
It took some time, but got it back exactly how it was. Would still attempt an ICS install though, as long as it is from a so-called "official" release. Any suggestions for the Skyrocket?

being on rogers we have to use kies for an update, i thought att had to use the update feature on the phone
Historically OTA is for small updates, Kies is for major updates. A lot of people here speak with so much authority with a dismissive tone on how ICS will be pushed out with OTA. Not sure why that is the case but it is looking very likely that Kies will be used for the update seeing how even the SGH-I777 got the update through Kies.

I don't see why not. The Blaze was released in March of 2012. The T989 also a Tmobile branded phone is running Jelly Bean and its older than our model. Presumably based on little differences and what nots it only makes sense for them to give the update. They are still marketing and selling the device so, yeah.(Hopefully)

Yep, shouldn't be an issue - I'll check again tonight, and like I said if no one else gets to it by the time I get my hands on it I'll post some stuff.
If I'm reading this right, the update to the new baseband is OTA if you are running non-rooted UVLH5 stock. There's nothing on samfirmware.com for this update to be available via KIES, so I would think that it's just OTA - that and it's only a 20 MB download. I'm going to go back to stock to see if this is OTA only and post my findings...
Nope. No OTA or KIES update available for me.

My interpretation of the T-Mobile info was that it was either - but you are right that it's not available via KIES currently so I could be wrong lol! No OTA has been pushed to the wifes phone yet, but that doesn't mean much for others of course.

It's just so weird to see it on Tmo but not on samfirmware. But yeah it says both... but I remember when ICS dropped it was on samfirmware almost immediately after release... could be because the ICS update was kies only... I'm not getting any OTA notification so... what gives..?

Yeah I'm not sure... the whole thing feels sort of odd really. Nothing yet here, hopefully it gets sorted out.
Oh yeah, congrats btw on your soon-to-be fun
Maybe its based on region. Any west coast or Midwest users out there? It would be nice to confirm one user that has upgraded.
Edit: did you guys try updating or uninstall reinstall kies? I know its been updated since the last time I used it.

I didn't have kies installed until today, so no go there... but yeah it would be great to confirm one update has been pushed out.

I also am operating with a newly-installed Kies scenario... Metro Detroit area and no OTA as of yet either
