[Tutorial] How to Backup Emails & Settings with Appextractor & K-9 Email - Android General

Want to fullwipe and install a new rom? Worried that current emails from the company email installed will be wiped out? Well here's a solution for you.
First of all, for ease of use, the email client used is not the stock one, but by K-9 email. This is completely personal choice & only because of the usefulness & ease.
Assuming that your current email is configured on the K-9 mail.
Step-1 (Nandroid Backup)
- Boot into recovery
- Perform a Nandroid backup of your current rom from recovery.
- Reboot.
Note the location of the Nandroid backup.

}
Step-2 (Appextractor installation)
- Install Appextractor from market & run the program.
- click menu button & select "settings" to select the Nandroid backup location
- select the 3rd option "Nandroid backup location"
- Enter the location of the Nandroid backup here & press OK.
- select the relevant backup file.
Step-3 (Restore selection / finalization)
- select "user apps" as K-9 email is normally installed as a user app.
- program will scan for the user apps
- program will present the list of applications in the backup.
- check the K-9 email app box & any related apps
- click Restore APK+Data. Wait for confirmation of completion.
Exit the program & check the K-9 app from the App drawer. All settings & data (emails till the Nandroid backup time) will have been restored. Just check for new mails & newer mails will be added.
Since K-9 is a user app, the process should be compatible when moving from any platform eg. GB to ICS (unchecked by me).
Have checked the same when migrating from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4.
Hope this helps.

very useful. Never been comfortable with TB. This is very simple.
Thx

Backup Data?

Hey i want to Backup my complete Android 4.0 on my HD2, because i want to change the partitions...
So how can i backup my:
-apps
-contacts
-words in keybord
-calender
as easy as possible pls
boot into the recovery mode and select backup. can't make that easier.
this will make a nandroid backup of your whole phone to the sdcard, it will be a folder with images of the various mounts and is a complete system with everything in its current state. using the same tool you can also restore it. Since you want to adjust the partitions, the size of these images will also give you a good guideline of how large system and cache need to be minimally with your current rom setup.
ok thanks, thats an good answer
can u give me a short tutorial?
i cant find the backup button...
reading you wanted to backup your ICS rom, i figured you had just another android phone which pretty much all have clockworkmod as recovery mode installed. I have no experience with the HD2 though, which is original a windows phone. Dunno if that matter and if maybe you have a different recovery console to boot into?
basically it should look similar to this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
one of the menu items should say "backup and restore" or just "Nandroid" (which is the name of the rom backup software). either way, select that and you'll enter a submenu where the choices "backup" or "restore" should be self explanatory. Backup will create a backup folder in sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ and with restore you can navigate to backup files on the sdcard.
It could be that you have a different recovery console, then let me know which one. (similar to the pic above it will have the name on the top of the screen, or it will say somewhere like "build:"). Though most alternatives have a backup option too in a similar fashion.
ok thanks i found it now
really great help
Your welcome, glad you fixed it.

if i want to backup ervything, but want to use another rom (no android ics) how can i backup?
Nandroid backup and look at Rom toolbox for the app manager. I think it's better than titanium.
Nandroid from Recovery/Rom Manager for an entire Image Backup.
Titanium Backup App for bits and pieces like user data.
use My Phone Explorer..
its awesome..
u need to have it in phone and a client on system.
Auto Sync.

[HOW TO] Restore Apps saved by "Titanium backup" when we can't run it

Hi!
Probably, most of you have experienced that Titanium Backup can't be used in some ROMs because of (for example) the incompatibility with ext partitions. That is why I make this mini-guide about how to restore apps (maybe on other ROM) previously saved with Titanium Backup :
What we need
Previously saved apps, on a external SD (Obviously )
ES File explorer (It can be downloaded via PlayStore)
NOTE BEFORE STARTING: You can't restore the data of the app, only the app (apk).
Let's start:
1- Enter on /sdcard/TitaniumBackup/ and search the app you wanna restore:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2- Let's asume that we want install "Flash Player" (for example). When we find it, we can see that there are three files with (moreless) the same name:
3- The only file we need is wich one that has the ".apk.gz" extension (normally it appears like the 3rd), ensure by long pressing it and then entering in "properties":
4- Once we have our desired file, we press on it and we will enter on the ".apk.gz" file. Then, press again and we will get the installation screen:
Ta-da! Magic!
Hope that this mini-guide helped you and of course, you liked it.
Thanks for the info man! I was using CM7 but it had not full superuser and ext support, so i couldn't work properly with it... Now I can install my saved apps.
Regards.
Big help, a massive thank you.
Obviously this would take forever, but thanks!
Thanks for the info but it's not working for me. I tried this using ES file explorer. I located the file alright, but when I tried installing it, it said install failed.
DId I miss something? or is there something wrong with the file?
Again thanks for the info.
neat but one question
Hey man i find your idea cool, but however that does not recover lost data, or am i doing something wrong?
Sorry for the necro, but this thread really helped me so I thought I'd chime in.

My Titanium Backup kept crashing everytime I tried to restore an app. I fixed this by following this guide and then going to the Titanium Backup to restore data. Once you installed the app with this guide the app shows up in Titanium under backed up apps. Then just click the app and ONLY restore data. No crashes and you get your data back!

How to get rid of the obsolete 2060, 2061 etc. error (ogwhatsapp, enwhatsapp etc.)

INTRODUCTION:
First of all I'd like to thank the developer of the modded whatsapp (ogwhatsapp, enwhatsapp, whatsapp+ etc. These versions of modded whatsapp doesn't seem to work well anymore =( but the good thing is a new version has come with the same and better features.)
It's very convenient that you could change the privacy settings as well as different customizations. Loved that!
Now on to the fix. This step by step is for retrieving your messages as well as getting rid of the obsolete error (only if you haven't deleted your whatsapp or made a copy of the folder from your sd card). But if you don't really need the messages. Go ahead, download and install the GBwhatsapp onto your android device.
For more info about the features and downloads, go check this site>http://onhax.net/gbwhatsapp-apk
(Take Note: I only created this thread to retrieve your messages from previous whatsapp, on my case I was using OGWhatsapp and had to retrieve messages as I was getting the obsolete message, but GBWhatsapp can be use together with the official whatsapp or in other words dual sim devices).
1. Before uninstalling your whatsapp, go to your sd card look for the "OGWhatsapp" folder and copy it to another folder.
2. after uninstalling your previous ogwhatsapp, install GBWhatsapp(don't verify your no. yet)
3. Go to your file manager (on my case root explorer). On the root of your sd card, paste the "OGWhatsapp" you copied from step 1 and make sure to rename it to "Whatsapp" folder as it will say can't find backup

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
4. Now go back to your GBWhatsapp. Click "copy whatsapp data", once you've confirmed the retrieved messages, verify your phone no.
5. After verification, you should see the change log as well as the messages from your previous whatsapp (ogwhatsapp, enwhatsapp, whatsapp+ etc.)
as you can see from the messages, its dated sept 2015(no obsolete error,Thanks so much to the devs) it still has that awesome customizations from ogwhatsapp or whatsapp++.
Edit: There's latest GBwhatsapp that can be installed on android. You can back it up with titaniumbackup and restore your messges/settings after flashing new rom.
Latest version: GBwhatsapp v4.91
Date: November 2016
I used for 2 years. These kind of customized Whatsapps like FMWhatsapp, GBWhatsapp, OGWhatsapp are no good because they don't offer cloud backup and restore like Official Whatsapp. Even if you backup manually on GBWhatsapp, restoring data is very complicated process and most of the times you fail to restore data. One of the updates of GBWhatsapp removed me from all the groups, restore did not work, all my data lost which included all the settings, my blocked contacts etc. Now I’m back to Official Whastapp and I’m looking for standalone mod which offers all features of GBWhatsapp and can be an ''add on'' to Official Whatsapp. WA Tweaker is close however it stops working when it likes. Not stable.

[Completed] Problems with WhatsApp backups

Details: Oneplus One, LineageOS 14.1, Whatsapp 2.17.24
I've been having some problems with the backup from WhatsApp. I switched roms and when I reinstall whatsapp and try to restore the backup, it keeps saying that it cannot. This is for both the local backup as well as my google drive backup. I have made a backup using TWRP and got the old whatsapp folder back. This folder contains the following files (see first picture below). The location is data\com.whatsapp\databases. I have read that whatsapp would restore messages using a msgstore.db.crypt file as well as key, which is needed to decrypt the messages. I, however, can't find any .crypt file or key file in a whatsapp key folder. I have tried to simply place the msgstore.db file in the whatsapp folder as well as renaming them to *.crypt12, but it always gives the error that it is unable to backup messages from the file. If I press skip to use google drive instead of a local backup, it gives the same error message. Would it work if I just copy all files in the whatsapp folder from the backup onto my actual whatsapp folder on my phone? I am asking this because I tried it so many times that I have to wait to confirm my number. I know for sure that the msgstore.db file is fine, because I can use a whatsapp viewer to view all the messages (see second picture below ). Any other tips that could help me restore my chat history? Thanks in advance.

Hi !
Whatsup , snapchat and other few similar apps have problems on custom roms , actually isn`t recommended to restore a backup of these because there are good chances not to work, it looks like a security issue of this apps
You will receive same feedback from the rom thread as well . The solution is to use the built-in backup / restore feature of this apps and not third party backup solutions
Cheers !

Can't restore messages from local backup taken on old phone

I took my WhatsApp's local backup on my old phone and put the same under Internal > WhatsApp > Databases on my new phone. But, WhatsApp doesn't even tries to detect the local backup that I already have on my new device instead it keeps on asking to restore backup from gdrive (in my case I don't have any backup on my gdrive).

It shows a pop up saying " If you previously backed up to Google Drive and want to restore it, give WhatsApp permission to check your Google account for backups", This has to options Skip and Give Permission. (Image attached).
Further on clicking skip, it simply moves ahead to the next step without any restoration. Please help me out to restore my messages.
P.S The phone number is the same in my case.

There are 2 different ways.
1. Uninstall the app, reinstall it. grant all permissions. Turn off the internet immediately after you verify the phone. (Some have said it works)
2. Install one of the older versions.
Working Versions: 2.21.9.5 and 2.21.8.17
please share your experience and steps with us here after trying it.
