Adobe Reader Problems! - Asus Transformer TF700

Is anyone else having problems with PDF files and Adobe Reader? I get very slow or no display, partial display, pages missing and/or blurry display. These same PDF files work A-OK on my PC, iPad and Android phone; but not on the Infinity.
Thoughts?

I am having the same problems. My thoughts are "WTF?"

Use RepliGo for faster rendering. I had good experience with iAnnotate PDF too, but it renders the pages in square blocks which some may find annoying. I'm using only RepliGo for pdfs after trying bunch of others. See my apps thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764480

Thanks for the tip! Just tried it out and it works great. I have many graphic intensive catalogs I'd like to put on the tablet and this reader will come in handy.
Off topic, this damn "image verificaion" thing I need to do when I post? I can barely make out the letters I'm supposed to type and I am averaging 4 to 5 tries before I get it right!

I do not have that verification step. Might it be that you lose that when you get 10+ posts? Can't remember.

THANK YOU!! What a major difference!

I wonder this is one result of (in)famous I/O issue. Because as I recall my old Galaxy 10.1 had better performance opening larger PDFs. This is not only limited to Adobe Reader, but also other apps like Mantano (which actually uses ADE engine by Adobe, so may be the same issue) and it seems also slower on ezPDF as well. RepliGo makes certainly better but I never used it on Galaxy 10.1, so I wonder if it is even faster on other machines.
I propose we all send email/message to ASUS rep to raise our voice here because this should not be hardware but rather some software fixable issue in my opinion.

[Q] MyLibrary App

Hi Folks
I liked the App to begin with, but like the other few Asus Apps, its proving a bit buggy. It seems to crash out when I view epub books, but I can't find out what it doesn't like. Can anybody recommend and eBook app?
Ideally I'd like to view 2 pages landscape, it would be awesome if I could rip the ebook reader from the Xoom and run it (its looks nicer from what I can tell).
IMHO the best reader by far on the Android is Aldiko (http://www.aldiko.com/). But since getting the Transformer, I'm using the MyLibrary... almost the same quality. I would suggest you have a look at the problems you are getting and try to see why. Maybe a corrupt epub? Try a free epub from google books (http://books.google.com/), it wouldn't be anything fancy but good quality.
If you are still having problems, please, give us more info,
rio
I had the same problems with the app just closing itself, after it had searched for all the viewable files. I found out it was 1 corrupt file that was causing the trouble. Sounds like you have the same issue. Remove them all, clear the cache for the app in the settings, then add them slowly to your collection to find the culprit.
Aldiko constantly force closes on me. Had to uninstall it. Using a combination of myLibrary and FB reader. MyLibrary won't read most of the books that Aldiko could read on my other tablet. I click and nothing happens. Sometimes the program will open, but not with the correct book.
FB Reader reads all my books but I don't like the formatting for the program...

The My Library app also crashes with epub books for me. Aldiko crashes as soon as I try and rotate the screen with a book. Aldiko also ignores the auto brightness function on the tablet and goes to 100% which is really annoying.
I've tried clearing the cache on the My Library app but this hasn't helped. An important point is that this didnt start happening until I put the latests Asus update on.. the version the tablet came with worked fine. Not sure if I can revert to the old version or if I should thought.

That's an excellent point.. I didn't realise it had one!
I purchased the Premium version of Aldiko and am pleased to say that it doesn't crash when I rotate the screen and works fine with my epub books that didn't work with the my lib app.
So would recommended the Aldiko premium app for anyone else having issues with Asus's My Lib app, doesn't solve the issue but works around it until Asus fix the issue.
P.S I think the issue may lie with the epub content or format. I don't think My Lib app likes epub books that have illustrations.
Developer from Asus
We are fixing my library app bugs, after testing it, and then planning to provide an update around 2~3 weeks later. More UI improvement and be consistent with Honeycomb UI. And we are adding to support posting what you are reading and your comment onto facebook sharing with your friends, too.
Further more, months later, we are going to provide users to store all their highlight / comments on the books into cloud storage, so, even users purchase another Asus device, he can still see all his history comments on his books before.
For the U.S. book store, we have Txtr already, and we are going to have another book provider very soon.

Have aldiko working but for some books the top lines are cutoff so I had to manually change formatting.
Also can't get it as dark asi want for night reading.
the main thing I like about myLibrary is the background texture + animations which makes it feel that little more tangible.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned moon+ reader (& pro version)
I use it over Aldiko as its much more customisable. Granted it's not as pretty but its features make it great for reading books the way I like.
How do you load .mobi books??? I do not know much about e-readers
Has anybody tried using calibre to manage their ebooks? Does it recognize the Transformer as an ereader? I've seen it used with a Kindle and an iPad and it makes converting/managing ebooks really easy.
MyLibrary stopped working after I upgraded the firmware. Does not activate and just closes. Anyone can help?
@koj012, which firmware version you upgraded to?
If you tried to clean the MyLibrary data/cache/db in Setting/Application/Storage use/MyLibrary, can your problem be solved?
Your feedback is valuable for us, thanks.

If you're willing to part with $.99, ezpdf reader seems to be pretty good. And it supports highlighting/annotations!
Surprisingly, the built in pdf readers of MyLibrary and Polaris Office are pretty good too. I impulse bought ezPDF before finding out about the built in ones. I think the built in ones are sufficient if you don't plan on annotating.

Yes, with the latest update that is one of the things they highlighted, I use it all the time and feel it is far superior than the other PDF readers. Developer is very active in improving and enhancing its features.
I think the built in one that comes with the transformer is pretty good
The only thing i dislike about it is the refresh rate on flipping pages,
+1 for EZPDF
I have tried many but I my favourite is EZPDf, its most complete
Why get a PDF reader when myLibrary handles it fine.
i got ezpdf for free from amzon. it is kinda slow to switch pages. I like repligo reader a lot better. Also allows you to annotate pdfs.

I agree. I've tried ezpdf, but Repligo is my favorite.
Nthing ezPDF, though I'd love to see one that can do a two-page display for landscape.
My experience is that MyLibrary's and Polaris Office's rendering quality is pretty poor. ezPDF's and Repligo's quality is about the same though Repligo is faster at switching pages due to Repligo rendering a low resolution version first which provides you enough information to know whether you wish to read that page or swipe to the next one. However, certain (complex?) pages fail to be rendered by Repligo (you just get a blank page with an X) whereas ezPDF manages those pages without a problem. If Repligo can fix the page fail issue then Repligo would seem to be the best out of the four.

Now that Adobe Reader has been released for Honeycomb I thought I would update the above with the fact that, then though I had assumed having come from Adobe that it would be the best, its rendering is just as poor as MyLibrary and Polaris Office. For the time being I will be staying with Repligo; and ezPDF as a back up.
Mantano Reader seems pretty good, 7 day fully functional trial available.
Repligo is the best on the market, but there are a few thing in my wishlist:
- Continuous scrolling
- Two page view
- Support for textbox
OfficeHD Pro can display PDFs very well. Although, you cannot make any modification to the file.
I've yet to find one that beats GoodReader on the iPhone. It allows annotation etc and has a great feature where you can zoom in but lock the screen horizontally meaning that the text can fill the entire screen yet scrolling won't mess alignment up. I've love them to port this app or have another one copy this.

Goodreader is one of the best PDF readers on the market of any device. Oh man do I wish they had a android version because I have tons of books with my annotations in them and for this fact I still have my iPad. The one feature that I absolutely love is locking of screen size. I emailed them back a few months ago and they never replied back if they are porting to android..
Repligo is the best, for me.

What do you guys think about Supernote?

I can't believe ASUS threw this thing in here. Compete with the Lennovo thinkpad perhaps? This app is incredible. I don't know of any other notepad app out there that rivals this. It does everything I need: shares with evernote, dictation, ocr, insert images. The fact it comes for free is incredible. It has a great simple paint app to boot. May need to uninstall sketchbook for that reason although the painting in Supernote is a bit limited.
The fact that the Transformer comes with this just shows how superior it is to any Android tablet out there. Once the TF2 comes out it will be king. And I don't even have to mention the dock!
What are your guys thoughts?

Wow this is app is great. Now I am not claiming to be a pro, but I have tried everyway to handwrite on this tablet and this app is the best. Very smooth all the most needed features in one app. Yes I am sure you can improve it somehow as everyone has a different need but for FREE it is for ME.
Fyi...for those who are having trouble with using the rubber tip stylus's I highly recommend trying a coat or two of rainx ....that is if you don't have a screen protector ...
supernote is the best note taking app and I have tried them all. it could still use some improvements such as zoom though. It works great with the adonit jot stylus.
wow, I love this program !
Seems like they perfected the interface as compared to FreeNote.
All they need now is to have some export to some PC format feature.
But how does the functionality compare to FreeNote?
Its nice, but I can't decide if I like it better than Antipaper Notes though.

If you use the insert annotation function, write your maths formula, you can then pinch to zoom to make it larger or smaller by using the select tool.
This app will be almost perfect if they can include palm rejection like in Writepad stylus, especially in landscape mode. Also export to pdf would be ideal.
I would also like to see either user selectable pen thicknesses or more choice added.
Truly is a simple and great app already.

grab the free app----Scan to PDF FREE from the mkt
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.scan.to.pdf.trial&feature=search_result
Share your note to it from supernote and walla- saved as a PDF. then you can open in Repligo PDF and add more text etc.....
Works for me. There are other PDF conversion apps out there- not sure how they work- but if anyone else gets one----REPORT BACK...
EDIT - another good one that works Images to PDF lite- https://market.android.com/details?...did=br.com.tabletsoft.converttopdflite&rdot=1
You have to share your supernote pages to the gallery than go into this app and add pages from the gallery than convert to PDF-
The good thing about this one is you can string up to 5 images/pages on the free version to one PDF doc. But you cant shre the pages to it right from the supernotes program.

Where do you see the option for OCR?
This would make it the complete package for me.

I cant see OCR support natively either in SuperNote,
but if you share your handwritten note to Evernote,
Evernote's servers will perform OCR on the note.
This makes words in the note searchable from within
evernote at least.
Supernote must be by the same people as FreeNote, its so similar.
Awesome app.

Tried it out yesterday. UI looks good but I don't like the way it handles folders. I prefer Komic's nested folder structure. It also takes up a lot of RAM and feels sluggish on my TF. But overall a good start and better than Perfect viewer IMO.

I don't use the desktop version of ComicRack. What I mean is that ComicRack doesn't show the nested folder structure like Komik.
Just an example, on my explorer my X-Men folders are
X-Men
|_ Uncanny X-Men
__|_ Phoenix Saga
|_ House of M
__|_Decimation
Komik will show just my X-Men folder on my "shelf" and let me drill down to the rest of the folders.
ComicRack will display all my folders in one list disregarding the nested structure. It is just my preference to keep the structure in place so it doesn't look messy and if you know how to make ComicRack behave that way I would love to know how.
Don't get me wrong, I like ComicRack. I think it does a better job displaying the comics compare to komik, plus it is only the first release. I'll be looking forward to more improvements.
I love this program on windows, have been using it for years, but prefer Perfectviewer on my tab for the same reason as atb1o1 - it doesn't have folder view, you can browse your files only through library. I see this trend in music players and other programs like ebook readers too, and i hate it. I keep all my files well organized in folders/subfolders and that's the way i prefer to browse them. One more thing, it doesn't display some of cbz files in library at all, and they are readable in other readers and windows version.
You can use the side bar to sort different ways and then stack in the browser. If you still can't find a sorting method that suits you go to his website and request a feature on the forum. He has been updating like crazy with new features sometimes twice a day. Also, use it with the desktop version... it's the best comic manager around.
Man this converted me. I was using komik mainly to read my hundreds of comic stored on my SD card, but after using comic rack for a day it just doesn't hold a candle. I do miss the stylized look of komik, but comic rack just works smoother and easier. Awesome find man.
The paid version just came out with wireless sync, and he is adding network sharing with the desktop version soon, so that you will be able to access your whole PC library from the tablet.
Wow the scrolling is just so smooth

Yeah I've tried all the sorting/stacking options. very interesting exercise in over-engineering complexity. Just like my mp3 player all I want is a simple folder view, or if absolutely necessary a compiled series view based on folder/file names. No question there are some neat "eye-candy" UI options, but KomiK is far more useable.
All that aside the page turning is just too unreliable. I'll page once it'll be buttery smooth, then the next time it will do nothing with no indicator that it even took your input. Then when you get sick of waiting thinking it ignored you you page again and it flips pages twice. Generally KomiK is smoother and when it occasionally gets hung up loading a page it tells you with the little "Loading" toast message and never stacks the page turns like CR seems too.
This is is just my observations, obviously a lot of work went into this app and it sounds like it fits other peoples reading styles better than mine. I have about 12gb of comics on my sdcard at the moment so I may be to the extreme.
I've been waiting for CR for awhile and have been using it since the day of release.. Comics are the main reason I have a tablet..
Although I love the app, it's not really ideal for large collections.. I haven't noticed any issues with page turning, but viewing by folder structure would really help.. It was suggested on the CR forums and he did add a sort by folder option.. but it's basically the same as sorting by series.. All the folders are lumped into one big list..
The closest I've come to being able to view things the way I'd like is using the 'genre' tag in CR for windows.. (Spider-man,X-men) So then I sort by genre and stack the series.. That way I can just go to Spider-man and only see those series without them being mixed in a giant list of other series..
Not totally ideal and will probably be annoying to maintain, but it's working for me so far..
Oh well different people like different things. Occasionally Komik seems to get hung up on some comics, but otherwise it's the best I've found. I have a comixology account, but can't stand their reader so I convert all the comics I get from them to cbz to read in Komik.
edit: ok just got an update pushed and i must say its much improved. folder view is almost good enough, but mult level would be better. paging is much improved bug would be better with finger tracking. launching is much faster than komik now. i still find komik a better design, bit now it's close. hope they keep up the improvements.

Stacking works fine as long as your naming scheme is in sync with what ComicRack is expecting, but if it isn't (and you're not synching from the Desktop version) it's problematic.
I do like comic rack (though the touch response seem a tad flakey at times) but it really could do with a way to define stacks manually within the Android App

Yes, you will get the most out of it if you are using ComicVine, which is the standard, to name your files.
Tried it seems nice and all, but I have this weird bug with page turns. After a few pages, next/previous starts going random. Instead of the next/previous page I get to a random page.
Any idea why?
In the mean time PV works just fine.

I mean that some text look like not being properly antialiased, that doesn't happen with pv's default scaling algorithm.

Annotate PDF in Polaris

I do not have a 10.1 yet, but I am seriously considering getting one. I went to try and test it the other day at a local retailer and figured out a number of interesting things.
However, when I played with the pdf viewer in Polaris, I found the option Annotate, but after selecting it, nothing happened, that is, I was not able to free draw or insert text or comments anywhere.
I have read in other threads lots of suggestions on other apps which work very well for annotating PDFs, but of course those cannot go on split screen. So I am really interesting in figuring whether this Annotate option actually does anything in Polaris with PDF's.
Has anyone figured what that does, if anything?
Thanks.

If anything you can import the PDF into S Note and annotate it from there.

It's broken. Here's my correspondence with them. They're working on it.
But S Note converts you pdf to images and it always crash while import for me. Polaris office is slow and it has issues displaying equations. And it can't annotate pdf with pen

Adobe Reader has surpringly good annotation ability. I've got ezPDF as well (it was on sale for $0.10 last Christmas!), but I think I'm going to stick with Adobe.
PDFs are one of the main reasons that I got this tablet. I thought kno would be a good resource, but it is rather clunky, doesn't display some images properly, and has terrible palm recognition. My PDF workflow is now Scholarly (to sync with my Mendeley database), then Adobe Reader to view/annotate. Also, Adobe Reader saves annotations in place, whereas ezPDF wants to make a copy, which it then stores in some unspecified location. This means that if I open a PDF from Dropbox in Adobe and make some comments, those comments then sync through Dropbox to my computer.
Never thought I'd have so much praise for an Adobe product!

Can't adjust thickness and color of the pen and no pressure sensitivity?

As with ezPDF, adjusting thickness and color is non-intuitive... *after* you've written your annotation, long-press on it. Then you should be able to modify the appearance. Whatever settings you choose will remain with the pen for the next time you use it.
No pressure sensitivity, you're right.
I've been using ezPDF which now on the Note 10.1 offers multiwindow which is cool. Use pen to annotate, rather than pencil..
Haven't figured a good workflow on how to use it with Mendeley yet...
I just downloaded eZ pdf and it crashes constantly. It does have the multi window function which is pretty cool, but useless until they fix the crashes. I downloaded Adobe but they still don't support the multi window function, and the built in Kno app doesn't support multi window either.
Edit: Did some more digging and found out that there is an app we can download in the app store called multi window which allows you choose any app to give multi window functionality to it. The pdf that I was trying to annotate on was protected SO the only way I can write notes on it was to use it in the Kno app! Thanks for the info guys!
