Just a question about the 4.0.4 update via Odin. Will this delete your apps and app data? I don't want to lose my place in all of my games. I don't care about email, calendar or contacts since that's all stored in the cloud (Google).

Had this same issue.. trying to update on the device itself resulted in booting into CWM and then giving an error.
You can update using KIES though without losing your data. You will however have to re-root + install CWM again afterwards.

When I was on Nexus S , the ICS 4.0.3 OTA was around 128mb size (sure skyrocket ICS would be bigger), which is big file size for an OTA (I installed it using fastboot and CWM recovery) so when it will come for the skyrocket it would be difficult to do from just the phone itself...

4.0.4 is not ota. Use kies, if you can get it to work, or Odin it.

I have the same problem running the rogers ics rom and can't update to rogers jb.
Do i have to have stock recovery or do i have to update keis to 2.5.2.13021_10?
If a stock recovery is the issue, is there a flashable zip of stock recovery :3
You need a stock recovery for kies to update yes. Sometimes to get it to recognize you need to have kies troubleshoot drivers.

S3 Jelly Bean Update failed

I had my phone rooted, but still running the stock ROM. I tried to do the Jelly Bean update and it failed citing a CWM directory. I went and did a complete reset since I was really looking forward to getting it on the s3, but now whenever I do a check for software updates, it says nothing is found. Is there any way I can manually kick off the OTA upgrade?

lol, there is no JB update. It is an ICS update and if you have a custom recovery installed it won't work.

I must have gotten over zealous... my GF got a JB update on her Nexus the same day.
There is a leak based Jellybean ROM in the Dev forum but there is no official release or update yet.
The only way you are getting a Verizon built JB Rom on your S3 anytime soon is if one leaks out. You will need to have a rooted device to install of course.
Otherwise, it could be months before we see an official release. Being that a Sprint JB Rom has leaked I would have to think a Verizon one is not to far off. Just because Verizon takes for ever to release the update does not mean that Samsung is not currently working on it.

Wow this is an old thread, what error did you get? Do you have a custom recovery? Do you have boost apps frozen or deleted? Some more details besides it failed would really help out.

I had to unroot before the JB update would work. Make sure you also check your bootloader to be sure it is back to the locked setting.
Here's how I fixed my update failure:

Since I did the NANDROID backup extsdcard before I removed the VZ bloat ware, can I just restore it? If so, where is it on my external sd card? I followed the instruction in the root guide, and don't remember specifying a folder for the backup... is it in clockworkmod\backup?

Yes if you backed up just restore it. You will need to restore through CWM though . If all you did was freeze bloat then under the backup/restore section choose advanced restore and just restore the system.

restoring from CWM failed. don't know why. finally, I just followed [GUIDE][VZW Edition]How to root your Galaxy SIII & More!(ROMs/CWM/Stock), Section 5 to get everything back to factory stock. Success! Now I have Jelly Bean finally. Thank you so much!

[Q] ICS Update Fail Error?

The ICS update isn't installing on my Atrix 2. The download process will finish and the installation will start, but it stops just a little into it and the phone will restart saying that the software update failed. I purchased the phone used and it was already rooted when I bought it. Will that keep the update from installing? How can I unroot or flash back? I'm new to all this, so I'm not entirely sure what to do and I don't want to try anything without knowing anything for sure. I don't want to mess up my phone. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Ok, I'm assuming you bought it used? And if so, why firmware are you on?

Have the same problem. Have rooted Atrix 2 on 2.3.6, official update is downloaded, but after "install" it just boots back to 2.3.6, and in About device section it says "Update failed."
General question now, how to officially update rooted phone?
Well all of you have modified or removed some of the stock system apps.of you are rooted go into cache/recovery and see the last_log it will give you the reason why the update is failing.
If you are not rooted just fxz back to stock and then try.

Well first of all you need to be rooted to see the cache folder.if you are rooted download root explorer or es file explorer.using that you can go into cache folder and see the last_log
Anyways if you wanna return to stock use the procedure from here and you'll be good to go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29560267
And yes if you fxz back to 2.3.5 you can OTA to 2.3.6 and then to ICS but in the link above now you can directly goto 2.3.6 just read the post and follow the instructions carefully

if you are rooted, just install an ICS ROM. (it will also block any JB OTA)
if you are not rooted - get rooted.

Well, I know another way... But it can take time...
Get the Stock imgs for Xoom and flash them (beware you'll lost ALL your data, even your precious photos and songs!), then you update until ICS again...
Or get rooted.

OTA Update

Hello guys, i rooted my device like 3 months ago and i felt like it really disabled my OTA update. Whenever i checked for such, it always says my system is the latest version. My question is, HOW DO I KNOW IF MY OTA UPDATE IS STILL WORKING OR NOT? I've searched for answers for like days. I think maybe its time to ask for answers here.
Your replies are well appreciated. Thanks in advance.

if you've just got a rooted stock then when you do ota you lose root access, if you got a custom rom forget about ota altogether, rooted users are supposed to update their firmware/rom manually through custom recovery or flashing software(such as odin) always keep a couple backups around, be it nandroid or titanium bakups, now there are some apps out there that say they'll let you keep root after ota but i do not know how well they work, if you've just got a rooted stock, go back to stock, update to latest version, enable usb debugging, and use kingo on your pc(google it) for hassle free 2 second rooting process that works on just about any android device, and wouldnt take mor ethan 2 seconds to do again if you lose root after OTA next time

no you cant have a OTA update because youre running a custom rom.. mostly only stock rom and kernels can run OTA.

well if you just rooted, no custom rom, then the software that handles OTA must still be there, however, depending the method you used, the OTA might not work anymore or even be disabled on purpose so that you do not lose root upon update, simply, backup, flash back to a regular stock, then use kingo, then do an OTA after root to check if it works, then once you're certain your phone works fine and has OTA, restore your apps, data, contacts, and settings from your backup(make sure you backed all those up of course) as well as your sdcard and/or internal memory files, back those up too since depending on what flashing software you use or how you **** up(it's normal we all do it ) you may delete its contents, and there you should have a rooted stock phone that has OTA and you can root back after rly quick and easy.....
