Hi. I'm new to HTC Sensation XE. Yesterday I just decided to root my Sensation XE phone so I went to htcdev.com to unlock bootloader.
Everythings went well, I managed to install Clockwork Recovery to my phone and able to install Superuser.
Bad things happened when I try to install CyanogenMod 9 through Clockwork Recovery. I put the rom into SD card, boot into Clockwork and then wipe data/factory reset plus wipe chache partition. Then install ZIP from SD card.
After "install complete" i reboot my phone and now I see CyanogenMod logo looping and stuck there.
I still can get into Clockwork and try install other rom but the Cyanogen logo also comes back everytime and stuck there.
I just found out that I have to do S-Off ?? I have no idea what to do next.
My previous phone was Nexus S. I installed many custom roms on that phone without any problem. As far as I know if I can get into Clockwork Recovery, my phone has been rooted, right? So
What is S-Off?
Why I have to flash firmware??
ROM for Sensation compatible with Sensation XE?
I am not familiar with AROMA installer, is this the problem I can't install ROM successfully?
Now my phone in HBOOT says:
***UNLOCKED***
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.27.0000
eMMC-boot

Please help me
First, you should check the guide on how to flash roms s-on or something. It says you have to push the boot.img in adb, i think.
Sent from my Sensation using xda premium
get the boot.img from the cm9 rom zip file
copy it to the adb/fastboot folder in your pc
connect the phone in bootloader to PC (phone should read fastboot usb after this )
now open command window in the adb folder and type this
fastboot flash boot boot.img
once it got success
type
fastboot reboot
your phone should boot fine now

SOFF: is security off ..once you got this off ..you can change any partition ..like you can install a custom recovery like cwm..over stock recovery ..and custom roms too
but ..HTC-DEV unlock ..is a alternative provided by the HTC ppl ..where when you do unlock ... recovary partition and partitions to make a custom rom work ..got unlocked ..thus this way you can flash cwm and thus custom roms ..
firmware:
to explain that ..think like this ..the complete phone is
hardware + firmware(radio +hboot/bootloader + some others ) + recovery (stock/custom) + ROM (system +data + boot)
now to have a ICS rom ..you need to have ICS firmware ..thus ICS radio (to have good signal) ..and ICS compatible bootloader to have ROM up and running
(remember if you have HTC-Dev unlocked bootloader you cant change the radio and hboot/bootloader)
as you are on ICS priror to doing HTC-dev unlock bootloader ..you are fine now ..as you already got a ICS radio (starts with 11.2x ..in settings->about phone->more->software information->baseband) ..also the hboot/bootloader 1.27.xxx is of ICS one ...
so you are fine with installing any custom roms ...
now there is a little headache when installing custom roms ..via custom recovery in case of HTC-dev unlocked case
some how when you flash a rom ...via cwm..every thing gets flashed except the boot.img which is the primary component to get the phone booting ...so you need to flash the boot.img separately ...that i explained earlier
there is a good recovery which can avoid the extra pain too ..that is 4EXT and the feature is smartflash
to understand the functioning of this recovery
have a good read of this thread ...its for you

Thank you. That's explain a lot. Now I can boot into Cyanogen and everything is fine now. So one last question, Am I have to push boot.img via fastboot everytime I install a new custom rom? If so, what to do when dealing with rom with AROMA installer?
I tried roms with AROMA installer and the installation ends at "SuperWipe". Nothing seems to install to my phone.

yes as long as you have cwm recovery ..you need to do that ..for every custom rom
and
thats why im saying its best to have 4EXT recovery ..as most of roms are 4EXT recovery compatible ..and what more its base is CWM itself ..so what ever backups you made via CWM can be used in 4EXT recovery ..too (and also its touch recovery )
for 4EXT ..recovery ..check the above guide step #2 for installing the 4EXT recovery
step #3 ..which has an amazing feature ..which will be quite useful to you ..(smart flash)
step #5 ..which makes the smartflash permanent

Hey guys, I have tried to install Cyanogen 9 and I'm having the same issue described here - I get stuck at the Cyanogen 9 screen.
Can I get some help? I have tried to reinstall the boot loader as described but that didn't work.
I have also tried to reinstall the rom and that didn't work either :/
I'm really worried and would appreciate any help.
My phone is also a sensation XE I have rooted it and my recovery works with the 4EXT.
Thanks!

if you are using 4ext recovery enable smartflash and install the rom again
otherwise flash the boot.img manually
i think it will help you
but i don't know if you can install cm with S-ON.

the only thing that i can tell you try to install another rom(check ARHD)reboot after install and see if it shows you the same
maybe requires S-OFF for cm but you told it booted fine the first time
i don't know why that happened

i am but i can seem to connect my phone which was rooted before i got it cant connect to the adb or fasboot files so i can do the command and i tried installing the adb fasboot files but cant seem to get my sensation to connect with my computer but on the screen of the sensation it says its connected fastboot usb and the computer installs the drivers by itself by doesnt let me do the command to the phone so im wondering is there a way i can redo the fastboot to my sensation which when i got it was rooted so im guessing they used there computer to do the commands on there computer. just need to find another way can you think of one because i tried following the step on this guide on installing the adb fasboot drivers but cant seem to get the path right or something is just wrong hopefully you can understand what im saying because this happened to me about 2 days ago and i was running bruce2728's cm10 rom perfectly then and also one thing when i go into the hboot it says no bootimg but it said that even before i flash bruce2728 rom and im guessing the problem could be the bootimg but i got to get the fastboot running with my computer please help if you can i would greatly appreciate it.
Hi guys and girls,
I got a HTC Sensation off ebay that has been flashed incorrectly and is stuck at the HTC green text boot screen. I have successfully installed CWM but I can't seem to get the right firmware on (I am using 3.32) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412618 with the stock ICS rom. The firmware says 'parsing PG58IMG' then does nothing.
I would like to use a restore image in CWM, but as the phone arrived without one I am trying to find a ready made image I can use.
- Anyone know where one is available?
Also, I can't do all the usual fastboot stuff becuse I can't enable usb debugging, so just to get it to a usable state with any rom would be great.
Please help!!
Thanks everyone

1. As you are SON you cant flash a firmware ..you need SOFF for that. Also you are having hboot 1.27 so that means you are already on 3.32 firmware ..so you can skip flashing firmware part
2. As you didnt have any nandroid backup ..start fresh and flash a custom ROM ..for flashing Custom ROM read the next point.
3. As you are SON and have HTC-DEV unlocked bootloader its better to have 4EXT recovery rather than CWM ...as it helps you in the process
Start completely fresh and flash using this guide (tip: follow it to the letter )

Thanks for the reply, but I can't start with the guide because the phone won't connect to the PC for adb access; I cant enable usb debugging because can't access the operating system menu.
All i can do at this stage is load up roms and flashes to the SD card by putting it in a card reader, then running it in phone via recovery. I am a little stuck :/

read the guide again ..whenever steps with adb commands are given ..immediately there will be a next step saying .."if you cant boot the phone then do extra 4 step"
So you can very well do all the steps if you can go to bootloader and has fastboot on your pc (usb debugging is not required either )
Hey you guys, my friend dropped her phone and it went into bootloop. She was using some old ARHD Rom. She then wiped her phone somehow (not sure what she did). OpenADSP - v05.6.0.2226.0.0418
eMMC - boot.

It eventually completed but now I'm stuck in bootloop with a large BEEP sound after "htc simply brilliant" screen, then phone reboots and have to pull the battery out. PLEASE HELP ME
Did you install stock kernel ??
Because some roms need specific kernels which only work on the Rom and your going to stock so its not gonna boot

IS the Phone S-OFF?
This step is extremely important, because we are not s-off and there is a problem with creating the "boot.img". T-Macgnolia explained it nicely:
When you use HTC Dev to unlock your bootloader it does unlock the Recovery, System, and Boot partitions to allow your device to write to those partitions and not just read those partitions. But there is a catch, if you want to flash a custom recovery you have to use ABD fastoot commands to flash it. When you flash as ROM in a .zip file via Recovery, it only flashes the System partition. You then have to open the .zip file and extract the boot.img and then use ADB fastboot commands to flash the boot.img to your boot partition. If you do not you will still have the boot.img of the ROM you was using before you flashed the New ROM.
Now let me explain the boot.img a little so you know why it is so important. The boot.img does just what thee name implies, it is what boots the Android ROM on your device. Now let me explain this a little further, the Android OS runs on top of something called a Linux kernel. This means that your bootloader boots the Linux kernel and the hardware of the device. The Linux kernel then boots the Android OS. The kernel is also the connection between the hardware and the Android OS. So you see if the kernel is not compatible with the system that is on the system partition you will have troubles like Wifi not working or other I hardware reliant functions. So when you flash a new ROM and you are HTC Dev unlocked you will have to flash the boot.img for the ROM or you will more than likely have troubles.

There are 2 ways to enable smartflash, one is a temporary way inside the 4EXT recovery itself (only for first time!) and the second way is permanent, through the 4EXT application.
The permanent way can only be enabled if your phone has ROOT! It's impossible to do it when you are going to flash a ROM for the first time.
Once you have flashed your ROM you have to install the 4EXT application and enable smartflash through it, which is explained in Step 5.
3A. Enable 4EXT Temporary smartflash
Enabling this is as simple is getting into the recovery and enabling it as an option.
NOTE: You only need to do this right before flashing your first ROM, so you should skip this step and come back here when the guide tells you to.
Disable "Fast Boot" on your phone.
Code:
Settings
Power
Untick "Fast boot"
Turn off your phone
Hold the Power AND Volume Down button until you see a white screen which says: "Fasboot".
Navigate to "RECOVERY" and select it, you should now boot into the 4EXT recovery
Select "Tools"
Scroll Down and select "Enable 4EXT SmartFlash"
Again, you only need to do this ONCE, once you have flashed your first custom ROM and enabled permanent smartflash, you don't need to this any more!

Hi,
The RUU contains a stock ROM ,recovery, kernel, firmware, and radio.
It should be the only thing you need to flash/run.
I do not know why the RUU did not work.
Now that it is "Locked", then you cannot flash an RUU with version less than your phone's current version.
The RUU should reset all your partitions,(Except s-off), and restore your phone to stock.
If your current version is the same as the RUU,try running it again by doing it manually (section 4 in the guide)
Section 4 of what guide (sorry for being this confused).
Also tried flashing other kernels and got assert failed: write_raw_image("/tmp/newboot.img", "boot") error
I ended up reinstalling CWM recovery, don't know how to get 4ext with just the bootloader...if there is any way possible I'd be willing to try the Smartflash option.
EDIT: just some further info...can't get adb to find device even though it is in fastboot usb mode..any way to get that working?

Hi,
The guide I mentioned in my first post ( HERE )
Flashing a kernel will not achieve anything.
Using smartflash if you are s-off,will not achieve anything.

Still not booting, making a beep after "simply brilliant" screen and reboots constantly. I was able to get ADB to finally work. I also followed Step 4 from the guide but even after the RUU flashes completely the phone is stuck in bootloop.

In order to flash ViperS 311 on HTC Sensation you have to flash kernel
311 which is included in the downloads section for vipers 311 (link
provided above).
Unfortunately, this "kernel updater" is making changes which are
preventing some programs to work. I want to remove ViperS and flash
other rom,
Unfortunately x2 this kernel updater made changes which are preventing
flashing other roms. In fact - I am struggling to boot 4ext
Therefore I want it out and revert to the software which I had on my
sensation before installing kernel updater.

actually you didn't flash kernel updater
kernel updater is being using to flash the boot.img of the rom so you can boot the rom after installation(if you are facing bootloops)
what to do now
flash another rom as you know
after that put the boot.img of the rom in your adb and fastboot folder and flash it via fastboot command(i assume you know how to do that)
if you need anything else report
edit:what did you mean by ''this "kernel updater" is making changes which are

Well, now I'm totally confused so let's start from the beginning:
1. I had some customised rom and decided to flash ViperS 3.1.1.
Flashing 3.1.1. is impossible unless you use this "kernel flasher" which
is included in downloads on the official ViperS311 thread. After
running this kernel flasher I managed to install ViperS311 but for
example LBE Privacy isn't working, my SatNav program isn't wokring,
other software isn't working as well.
2. Yesterday I got a message on my phone that there is an update from
ViperS 3.1.1 to ViperS 3.1.2 which I installed. Unfortunately, after
updating to 3.1.2 the wifi isn't working. I want to remove ViperS and
revert to other Rom like Asianic or any other. Now this is impossible
because of the changes that kernel flasher from ViperS made to my
device.
3. I want it out and get my phone back as I need it.
4. I have just flashed stock kernel and managed to install Asianic, but
after booting into the system and installing ES File Manager, it went
into a boot loop. Is starts and reboots non-stop.
5. I did used ADB but really long time ago so I don't remember all. I
also use mainly linux so I will prefer to revert it to the previous
version without the need for Windows use.

ok
can you boot now in the asianic rom?
if not then follow these steps
1)boot the device to the bootloader
2)connect it to pc via usb(in the hboot screen must say fastboot usb)
3)now extract the boot.img from the asianic rom and place it in the folder where you have adb and fastboot files
4)open in that folder a cmd window and do fastboot flash boot boot.img
5)then do fastboot reboot
see then if it boots to the rom
Is superwipe recommended while coming from stock ICS or I should format all partition except SD Card? I am S-Off and 3.33 firmware.

Thanks for that rzr86, I'm starting to understand that now. It seems
that Kernel Flasher from ViperS 311 is a boot.img file with simple
program made by ViperS group that does what you mentioned, but without
the need for using adb and command line.
- However, I still don't understand what changes they made to that
boot.img to cause such complications... ?
Asianic installed correctly but than started crashing and booting in
loop so I replaced it with "Sense-o-Maniac" and this seems to be
working fine.
It doesn’t have any previous problems that I was experiencing on other
rom's.
I will report if any problems arise. So for so good.
I got bit shaky when I couldn't boot into 4EXT but it was just temprary

Superwipe is basically wiping all partitions except of SD Card. Always recommended :highfive:

All kernel flasher does is "fastboot flash boot boot.img" NOTHING ELSE, and u can use it to actually flash any other kernel you want on ANY device!
Using kernel fasher
Hi ! I just joined this forum and might be this is my first question
I am quite interesting to install this ROM (viper) and would like to take a shot. But, I worry about this "kernel flasher" issue.
Here is my sensation status :
-HBOOT 1.29
-Firmware 3.33.707.151
-Radio 1176A.3504.OOU_1124A.3504.31_M
-S-ON
-Bootloader unlocked
-Rooted
I would to confirm some questions :
1. If I want to install this ROM can't I just simply install it to the latest version of ViperS 3.1.2?
2. Which one will come first flashing kernel (using kernel flasher) or installing ROM?
3. Will it be working using my current firmware?
Sorry for this noob question. Really appreciate your help, guys.

1)simply install viperS ROM 3.1.2.use 4ext recovery and before flashing enable smartflash from 4ext
2)just flash the rom and do as i said in first answer.if you have bootloops after installation then use the kernel flasher or
do it manually by extracting the boot.img of the rom, place it your adb and fastboot folder and type the command to cmd window
fastboot flash boot boot.img
note: connect the device to pc into fastboot mode(in the hboot screen should say fastboot usb)
3)yeap

Hi ! Would like to ask few questions again..
How to properly change from twrp to 4ext?try to search but have no confidence on it.what about my nandroid back up that I did with twrp?will it be readable with 4ext or should I make another one with 4ext once it's been intalled?
Hope u.can help me with this.thanks so much.
Hi all!
First of all: I know. I am a dumbass for not doing a backup. (and several other things)
Second: Thank you for your time! I really appreciate it- thats why I tried for two days to solve the problem by searching the internet for guides to restore my phone and not stealing your time.
If you just want to help me - skip the first part ("The story"). I just had to write it down, because I am that desperate and hopeless...
The story
Beside my Nexus 5 I wanted a spare phone to go outdoors and have a nice small phone - other than the huuuuuuge Nexus.
My last phones were the HTC Sensation, a Desire GSM and the Wildfire. So I decided to get a Desire S and do what I did to all my phones and tablets yet: root it.
Because I had the dumb idea that rooting a couple of phones makes me an expert I skipped the "reading guides"-part and jumped right to the "beeing an idiot"-part and downloaded the Revoked-tool.
After I got the TWRP-recovery I also skipped the "making a backup"-part and that is where my disaster began....
The problem
I tried to root my phone, but I did not reverse the Hboot. So now my phone IS NOT s-off, but I've got a working recovery installed and I can get into Fastboot and the Bootloader.
But because my partitions are wiped I can neither boot normally nore can I install a custom recovery (because of the "s-on").
My phone has got an O2-branding, so I can't install the normal Android 4.0 RUU. Neither works the O2 RUU. I suppose, because it still is the Android 2.4 - Version ( the name of the file is "RUU_Saga_O2_UK_1.31.206.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.14_M_release_178935_signed.exe") and it does not work with my phone....
Is there any chance to get a working Desire S again?
Thabks for your time....
u have stock recover. and u have (i suppose) an unlocked bootloader.
have u tried flashing the recovery through fastboot command ?
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
download TWRP or 4EXT touch zip file - then unpack it and copy the recovery.img inside it to fastboot or android-tools folder
open cmd there (preferably with admin rights)
and run that command.
if it is able to flash a custom recovery, then u can try to flash a rom.
u might need to check if u have a sony or hitachi screen panel though (but that should have been before u tried rooting, i think)
Hi rht_sg,
thanks for your answer!
Right. My Bootloader is unlocked.
The problem is the "S-ON" I think.
I've got a recory installed, but I can not intall any custom ROM because of the "S-ON"-Mode.
Here the important things I have foregotten in my first post:
In FASTBOOT my phone says:
"
SAGA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.02.0002
RADIO-3831.19.00.110
eMMC-boot
"
...and my recovery is TWRP v2.4.0.0
You can install a custom rom without being s-off, but you have to flash the boot.img (from the rom) manually in fastboot after installing the rom in recovery (fastboot flash boot boot.img).
I would recommend updating your recovery to either twrp 2.7 (from the thread in this forum) or the latest 4ext touch. One reason being that older recoveries fail when trying to flash kit-kat roms (error 7).
To update your recovery while still s-on, use fastboot (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img)
Thanks!
That solved it. - Now I could install a custom ROM again.
Now I follow your advice to flash the latest recovery.
