Help, building cm9 from sources - Samsung Galaxy SL i9003

Hello, I have some problems while building cm9 from sources.
When I do

I get the following:

No such item in brunch menu. Try 'breakfast'
(seems like its not officialy supported by CM team)
I've tried this:
Manually downloaded files as .zip from here:

and extracted here: /device/samsung/galaxysl/
Then downloaded files from here:

https://github.com/teamhacksung/android_vendor_samsung_galaxysl
and extracted here /vendor/samsung/galaxysl/
Then compiled with no errors, the output files were something like this:

cm-9-20120717-UNOFFICIAL-galaxysl.zip
and

cm_galaxysl-ota-eng.xxxx.zip
They have both different sizes (every file has different size inside .zip), if someone could tellme the difference it will be apreciated.
Tried flashing both of them, and the phone doesnt boot up, just black screen on.
CWM 6.0 works just fine.
Could someone guideme or give me any tip to make it work?

You need to download the kernel too.
Download android_kernel_samsung_latona.
And build it separately and then build cm9.
In the evening, I will post the local_manifest.xml, copy it to the .repo folder. this will downlod the device/vendor and kernel for galaxysl automatically. Any changes by teamhacksung will also be synced automatically.
meanwhile you can refer to cm7 local_manifest.xml.
You need to make changes to it to as it is for gb.

I should see better, but I think that cm-9-***-UNOFFICIAL-galaxysl.zip has all the apk with all the images optimized for size. If you take a look at the last messages in your terminal you'll see a lot of lines that start with "Optimizing ****...".

Everything is done automatically, all the sources are in the right place and everything is ready to be built.
As you can see I'm using alfrix's builscripts instead of the teamhacksung ones. That's because he already adapted them to work with our phone (well, codeworkx recently changed build.sh and made it a little bit more universal). So I can simply run

./build.sh galaxysl
NOTE:
By default the kernel is not built from kernel/samsung/latona, the prebuilt one in device/samsung/galaxysl/kernel is used (you'll see a warning during the building process). This kernel is old if I'm not wrong, it doesn't have all the latest changes.
I usually build it separately and then replace it and the modules inside device/samsung/galaxysl/.
(remember that if you don't set up git correctly, the next time you'll do a repo sync you'll "loose" your changes)

I am getting this warning message:

what is this regarding?

1.- Couldnt compile the kernel (./kernel/samsung/latona) using either latona_galaxy_defconfig / config file pulled via adb.
2.- I've replaced the prebuilt one (./device/samsung/galaxysl/kernel) with cm9a9 kernel then build the whole rom. (wifi didnt work)
3.- Replaced the new boot.img in a working cm9a9 build and works fine, cwm 6.0.7 and wifi works but the rom isnt the one that I've compiled.
Seems like there is a problem with wlan modules. :0
Btw I'll keep trying

To compile the kernel you go to the kernel/samsung/latona folder and run the ./build.sh and then build the ROM.
Regarding the WIFI, I have the same problem. I was able to build it, but the wifi seems not to work.

Its nice that the build.sh script copy the modules and the kernel after build.
I've check'd the log and it seems like its using linaro toolchain and the prebuilt one is codesourcery.

make: ../../../prebuilt/linux-x86/toolchain/linaro-4.6/bin/arm-eabi-gcc: Command not found
I've checked ../../../prebuilt/linux-86/toolchain folder and there isnt any linaro-4.6 folder, maybe the scripts are out of date.
I'll try tomorrow to find that toolchain and put it there

I think you are using Alfrix kernel.
The default kernel for galaxysl from teamhacksung git does not use linaro.

Regarding wifi issue I talked with dhiru.
He says to use dhcpcd from cm7.

I guess you are building alfrix's kernel
He switched to linaro. You need to download the toolchain separately if you want to use it.

I too had troubles with wifi at first, but I think in my case the problem was my router. It always gives me problems, I can't even keep my phone with the screen off and wifi on. It keeps the connection active with the router, but that's it, if I try to ping something out of my net, I get no response. (stock roms too)
Anyway, I was able to enstablish a connection with a static IP and now it works with DHCP too, but I didn't use dhcpd from CM7, weird.

Did more tests, it seems I have problems in getting the IP. Thanks for the headsup!

I had always got those warnings. You get them when you strip the modules.

Successfully built.
Wifi is working (adding the cm7 dhcpcd)
Cwm version is 6.0.7

Yes, I've moded the local_manifest.xml a little I'll try with the default kernel for now
There are some issues that I've found related to the cpu governors, i.e on-demand makes the battery last longer but seems like it makes the connection down or just cloud notifications down while certain amount of time with screen off. With conservative governor works just fine.

FYI dhiru's kernel has all the governors, waleedq included them when he took UC kernel sources.

I can see that CWM is under heavy developement and with your version (or maybe 6.0.6) I couldn't mount /emmc or /sdcard because of a missing trailing slash (koush fixed it now) and now CWM 6.0.0.9 erase my /system partition when I try to start a backup and I think it does something to /efs too (of course I have a backup of everything ), but I'm not sure if the problem is CWM or I did something wrong.
So, be carefull with this new recovery (anyway I like the new background :laugh
EDIT:
Ok, now I'm sure: /system, /efs and probably /sdcard (=external sd in CWM) are erased when you start a backup.
EDIT 2:
And gapps is missing after an update, it never happened. I think this is related to it.

Need help to recompe kernel for the Nordic HTC Magic to support netfilter/iptables

As many of you might already know we have gotten a HTC Magic here in Scandinavia without support for netfilter and iptables. I've been trying to recompile a new version of the kernel on my x86_64 Archlinux box while adding these lines to the .config which I exported from my rooted phone:

I am a n00b when it comes to compiling, booting and flashing Android stuff and not really a git wizard either. I've downloaded the source, cross-compiled it with my new .config and tried booting it with fastboot only to stare at the HTC logo for 15 minutes before giving up. I suspect that I have probably failed doing the right thing at more than one step in the process but have troubles finding a full guide for Android kernel hacking and loading on the web. I am not even sure if I really compiled the 2.6.27 version used in the daldroid build I have on the phone instead of the latest version in git.
I will provide the step-by-step details below.
1. Downloading and installing the CodeSourcery Cross-compiler from
HTML:

2. Downloading setting up the android source code:

Hmm, unfortunately this option is already set to true.
Perhaps it is mainly a fastboot problem. I dunno.
maybe but why you dont try to make a boot.img and flash it?
did you set the system type to msm? it is important.
copy here your .config, maybe we can try to see if something is wrong or you can do this.

For what I've seen, you're not making a kernel+ramdisk image, but loading them both splitted. Maybe you're missing the command line parametters?
Also, you can patch the kernel code to make it light up one of the leds so you can know if at least the kernel is actually booting or is getting stucked somewhere. To make this, you can patch, on board-sapphire.c, the init function:

Yeah, that could be a problem. I was under the impression that fastboot built the boot.img itself before transfering the kernel to the phone.
Interesting test with the leds. I'll check it out if I don't solve this.

I think that HTC patched some things in that are not available in the source tree... So I doubt that you'll be able to get a kernel running build from source. If you do happen to make it run let us know

I would not be suprised at all if that was the case. However, since the Linux kernel is GPL, such patches, as I understand it, also need to be under the GPL and made available upon request. Is there a public HTC source tree anywhere?
And btw, how can I fix the "recompile" misspelling in the title of this thread? It is driving me insane
This might be a very stupid question, but here it goes:
Shouldn't it be possible to build all the extra netfilter/iptables support for the vanilla 2.6.27 kernel as modules and insmod them when running HTC's kernel? Or will that result in swift and horrible death?
i don't see why it wouldn't. we wouldn't need the source for htc's kernel then, right? just figure out how to build the modules? isn't that kind of how proprietary video drivers work for linux?
EDIT: Modules will work, that is certain. A little googling confirmed that's how wlan and such work (on Android)
EDIT 2: It seems like there is .config for the kernel on the phone that can be used with the standard 2.6.27 kernel source to build the android kernel.

we have learnt that HTC has a lot of parameters specified for code that appears not to be in the standard android 2.6.27 kernel source tree. We would be very very happy if someone around here could point us to the repository holding HTC specific patches and code for the Magic/Sapphire.

Thanks for your "How to compile a kernel" tutorial in the developers section. Using that I was able to 'roll my own' kernel the way I wanted it (stock JB kernel merged to latest linux version + voodoo.)
Although I didn't use it, I experimented with Ezekeel's BLX. I was unable to 'git merge' it into the aforementioned kernel from the BLX branch. (Every file had a conflit, and although git has a steep learning curve I am guessing the reason is it was merged into ICS.) I was able to get it to work using 'git cherry-pick', and I am guessing BLD is the same.
Once I had compiled my kernel I used 'dsixda-Android-Kitchen' as a frontend to unpack boot.img. I replaced zImage and repacked boot.img.
I registered with this forum to ask a question, but through trial and error I found that that it was important to use the ramdisk associated with the target ROM, rather than the stock ramdisk. Many CWM updater-scripts do this 'on the fly'...
(I was surprised to see that several kernel installers also copy a few .ko modules into /system/modules. One was for BLN, but I did not research the reason for the others...)

[HowTo] Compile the Kernel Source Code for the HTC One XL

Hi guys!
Someone requested a tutorial on how to build the kernel source code, so I thought I might as well do it I'll give you a bit more information too.
Maybe this will kick start kernel development a little bit too. Who knows.
Anyway:
1. Set up your build environment as per this guide by AOSP here: http://source.android.com/source/initializing.html
This guide will be primarily aimed at Ubuntu, but it should be easy enough to do on other Linux PCs. Ubuntu is highly recommended. And don't ask about Windows.
2. Download the toolchains: http://code.google.com/p/rohan-kernel-evita/downloads/detail?name=toolchains.tar.gz&can=2
I've hosted both GCC 4.4 and GCC 4.6 (prebuilt) on my Google Code page. These are for Linux.
Download the toolchain package here: http://code.google.com/p/rohan-kernel-evita/downloads/detail?name=toolchains.tar.gz&can=2
Then un-tar the archive and extract it to your home folder so that the path to the toolchain directories are ~/toolchain/whatever-one-you-want
3. At this point you can decide which kernel source you want to download. There are really two sources.
The first choice is getting it from HTC Dev directly. This is good if you want to build your kernel for a Sense 4 ICS ROM. If you want to build for AOSP/JB, then scroll down below all the following HTC stuff.

To use HTC's source:
Go to HTCdev.com and make an account. Then download the source code for our device (I'd recommend the "One X" source under carrier "AT&T" version "2.20". Let the zip file download and extract it to your home folder (so the path is /home/user/evita-ics..../
To build HTC's source, run these commands:

export ARCH=arm
make elite_defconfig
Second command is saying what type of architecture we want (we are compiling for ARM processors, so we want ARM)
Third command is saying to make the default config for our device (whose hardware is codenamed "elite")
Then to build the actual kernel:

make -j# ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=~/toolchain/arm-eabi-4.4.3/bin/arm-eabi-
In the command above, there is "-j#". Replace the "#" with the number of CPUs you have.
Ask me about it if you need help. That should be it! Let the build go and in a few minutes you should have a zImage file located at ~/evita-ics-..../arch/arm/boot. That is the actual kernel.
To test out the zImage (kernel), connect your device via fastboot mode and type:

Combined with the ramdisk, thats what makes the boot.img file. Eventually if you want to distribute your kernel, you should use an installer that injects the zImage into the boot.img or combine the zImage with a ramdisk to make a boot.img. I can do a tutorial on that later on as well.

To get the "other" source:
This source is based off of HTC's source and includes other devices as well in it (the One S and Evo 4G LTE). Its good if you want to build JB AOSP kernels.
To download this kernel source do this:

git clone https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_kernel_htc_msm8960.git -b android-msm-evita-3.0
This version also includes a number of optimizations and odd bug fixes present in the HTC version.
To build this second source, run these commands:

make elite_defconfig

The second option is also a bit better as it uses the 4.6 toolchain instead of GCC 4.4. HTC's source doesn't work with GCC 4.6 so it can't be used without changes that the second source has.

FYI, It looks like the branch name has changed. When I changed "jb" to "jellybean" the repo init command worked.

I downloaded the 2.20.502.7 kernel source and when I extracted it there was a file named evita_readme.txt which gave another, possibly more "official", location for downloading a toolchain:

I just performed a build with this toolchain but got this error when I attempted to load zImage via fastboot:

I'm not sure if this is caused by the toolchain or if I screwed something up. Have you ever seen this error before?
EDIT: Ok I see what I did incorrectly. The zImage needs to be "Combined with the ramdisk". You wouldn't know how to perform this operation... would you?

You are trying to flash a zImage
To my knowledge, only booting zImages work on this device. For the time being just boot the zImage (use fastboot boot zImage)
I will make a tutorial on how to combine the zImage created with a ramdisk to make a boot.img when I get the chance

Oops, my bad! That was a mistake. AOKP uses -jb and CM uses -jellybean so I got them switched fixed now
Out of any device I've seen more people actually interested in helping and learning to help then any other community. I've watched noobs become less noobish.. I've watched skizz learn how to make themes. Hell I've learned 10 fold what I knew before this phone myself.
That is beautiful, and now such an informed, helpful post such as this.

Thanks for your response, rohan. You are absolutely right: I was incorrectly attempting to flash zImage straight to the boot partition, and the error produced by flashboot was justified. I have since successfully "tested out" my compiled zImage by flashing it via "fastboot boot zImage" and it worked like a charm! I ported the modifications from sbryan's Blackout BeastMode kernel and I am now able to OC to 2106 MHz and UC to 192 MHz. It's been running solid for the past few hours at least
Of course, the kernel reverts back to the one stored in the boot partition after a reboot, and I want my shiny new kernel to "stick". I've done a bit of research on this topic and found some information about combining my zImage with a ramdisk into a "real" boot.img but have not yet been successful in creating a boot.img which does not bootloop after flashing it.
For example, I found an article on xda called Basic Kernel Kitchen for Minor Kernel Tweaking which points to a "kitchen sink" tool for creating a boot.img from a zImage and a ramdisk. My problem is that I don't know where to get or how to make a ramdisk. So I tried using the ramdisk from the boot.img of the ROM that I am currently running (CleanROM 4.5 DE) but just got into a bootloop. I've since been doing some yard work today so haven't gotten back to investigating further.
I also found another program named abootimg which can also produce a boot.img from a zImage abd a ramdisk, but when I tried it an error message about my zImage being "too big" was produced.
If it's not obvious yet, I am kind of fumbling around in the dark as compiling and deploying custom kernels is completely new to me! But this post was the most valuable resource I've come across in getting to this point. Thanks so much for writing it! I eagerly await your next article about creating the boot.img

This is the toolchain that I used and it successfully built the zImage.
ko files -- I noticed in the ZIP file for Blackout BeastMode, in additional to installing the zImage it also puts a bunch of "ko" (kernel modules I believe) into the /system partition (eg. qce40.ko). Should I also be deploying .ko files from my build to the device?

The reason why your boot.imgs bootloop is because there is a special ramdisk address that needs to be set when combining the ramdisk with the zImage, and most kitchens don't support this. You also need to set the address after setting the base value.
I will post a guide on how to make it a real boot.img whenever I get the chance.

I went deeper and install lib32z1 with "sudo apt-get install lib32z1"... now its work
My device repositories are not available on github, But I got device tree and vendor blobs by making changes in similar device repo. That reference device's kernel's lineageos_defconfig is situated in htc msm8974 kernel repo. So how can I get lineageos_defconfig for my device, and which other my device related kernel files(.dtsi or any other) I have to push in htc msm8974 repo and get those files to make things ready for build?

Porting Lineage-14.1 to SM-G925F

As far as I know there is no official support on the LineageOS github for the zerolte model and that's when I decided that I'd like to change that.
I created my own device tree, but there are still some important directories and files missing to get passed the brunch command for zerolte.
If any kind soul would be able to help me make the changes specific for this model I'd be so happy.

I found a custom version of Lineage for this phone, but I'd prefer to build a clean version so that more updates/fixes come more often.

If you don't care about loosing everything on your phone here's how to erase everything on it:
In TWRP
Click on Wipe.
Then click on Advanced wipe.
Select the following partitions to wipe:
Dalvik / ART Cache, System, Data, Internal Storage, Cache.
Now swipe to the right to wipe.
Go back one step and press Format data.
Type the word yes and press the blue button on the lower right corner that has a check mark in it.
Now, go back to main menu.
If you have downloaded the above mentioned zip file to your desktop and you have adb working on your local computer, connect the phone with a cable and type in the terminal:

adb devices
Once you've confirmed that the phone is recognized, do this command:

cd Desktop
adb push ResurrectionRemix-zero-multitarget-2017-06-14_1948.zip /sdcard/
It will take some time so grab a coffee or play with the cat.

Click Install.
Go all the way down to the bottom of that directory and click on the zip file and let it install.
Now just reboot the phone and wait until the boot is finished because the first boot will take a little while.

On every lineage os rom I tried for g925f is the failure that, if I lock my phone with the powerbutton its impossible to turn it on again...I have to restart it. And also the sensitive buttons don't work

Well, there won't be one unless you're willing to help working on it.
Make a manifest that's as close as possible to Lineage stock and I'll add it to the repo and do a test build.
There aren't any repos for zerolte for Lineage as noone has added support for it.

None of Lineage OS works on Galaxy S6 , i downloades 4 ROMs , none working. I had hope for one but when i turn screen of it doesnt come back

Lol, TeamNexus always release a multitarget build here and for multitarget I mean 920/5 F/I/T/W8. You can build 925 if you want, I always build mine since my device is not supported (925S)

Building kernel from Xiaomi's source for cereus (probably, cactus too)

Since Xiaomi released source code for kernel, I tried to build it.

You can test builded kernel using this:
GDrive
Use Carliv image Kitchen to repack your rom's boot.img, then flash it via fastboot (UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER REQUIRED). To restore working state after testing, flash stock boot image again.

Our kernel uses android regular boot.img format, not MTK.

If you want to build this, any manual for building kernel will fit. I used google's android arm eabi 4.9 toolchain, our arch is arm, defconfig is cereus_defconfig.
For now, I don't have enough time to take a closer look at this (work, university exams), so, any help (last_kmsg, dmesg, pull requests) will be appreciated.
Wait seriously? Does that mean that i can buil LOS rom now? I have my UbuntuVM with whole LOS source code downloaded but i got stuck at no kernel found for cereus. So it might work now(Im extremely new to linux) I'll try to build the rom asap

This kernel for now won't really help with building los. I haven't find any device tree for our SoC (or close). MTK always requre a ton of patches to android sources. But i have reference MTK 9.0 android sources for this SoC - ALPS (can't share, it's probably illegal, but you can find them on 4pda.ru, if you want). It builds on almost unmodified reference device tree, but i haven't tested it on device. First, we need to make this kernel usable.

This may not really help, but can you try that kernel again after upgrading to MIUI 10.2.4 ?
EDIT : See https://www.kimovil.com/en/list-smartphones-by-processor/mediatek-helio-p22-mt6762 for a list of devices with MT6762. Probably we can check out their trees?
EDIT 2 : It seems like our Redmi 6 is the only device with available kernel source in that list.

I finally finished my university exams, so now I have some free time to play with it.
The kernel you link is just forked xiaomi sources merged to linux 4.9 kernel. It shouldn't be buildable at all, since there is the same problem in sources I "fixed" with this.

You're right, they're identical.
By the way, I couldn't find any implementation available for our Helio P22; the chipset itself is fairly new, thus not many devices have the source code available.

Ok, i've tested it on latest GS. It seems to work a way better. At least, it doesnt reboot after few seconds of usage. It makes things a lot easier.
Tested a few more things:
-sound - works
-camera (both photo and video) - works
- mobile data - works
- phone calls - work
- dual sim -works
- all sensors work
The only thing i was unable to test is gps. It didn't worked for me, but i was inside 9-floor building near the window to inner corner of building... So idk.
And usb otg - since i don't have adapder.
After this I can tell, that there are only 2 major bugs - wifi and bluetooth.
Maybe gps, fm radio and exfat too. This is modules loading problem, I think (though, there shouldn't be any modules, drivers are marked as built-in in config, but .ko files for them exist in /vendor/lib/modules)

Yeah, Treble definitely makes things easier.
Nevertheless I'm trying to integrate those kernel modules into the compiled zImage - there's no modprobe in Android, sadly.
Adding modules support and disabling modules versions check in config didn't help.
I can't find any source files in kernel sources, from which these modules can be built. Maybe, they are built from separate platform code (they are placed in vendor, so...) Need to download ALPS (brrr, around 50 gb of tar.bz2 archives) to check it.

I tried to backpors drivers from 9.0 - no success. It compiles,but doesn't boot. I tried to hack modules loading - no success too.

I can't find any source files in kernel sources, from which these modules can be built. Maybe, they are built from separate platform code (they are placed in vendor, so...) Need to download ALPS (brrr, around 50 gb of tar.bz2 archives) to check it.

Most of the time those binaries are not open-source (you probably know vendor blobs for Google devices are too, but that is a different story). Nevertheless I don't really get why kernel modules are placed in

- after all, mobile devices don't have hot-plugging hardware that requires dynamic LKM loading, why do they separate them out?
I'll attempt to crawl the web for those sources while waiting for Mi Unlock to allow my device being unlocked (the waiting period sucks).

2. In which file did you got those lines?
3. Indeed those modules' source are removed from our tree - if you have the link, I don't really mind having another 50GB occupied on my PC to get those source code.

I already said that i have leaked mtk alps 9.0 sources These modules have sources, they are not prebuilt. I managed to built in them, but kernel doesn't boot at all after that. And i can't take any logs because the system dies before adb init.
Ok, after one little, but very cruel hack modules are fixed. Enjoy testing the kernel.

P.S. I'm not adding everything requested to kernel. But this was only config modification.
