Help me Root/Find a ROM for my One S - HTC One S

I'd really like to put a new ROM on my one S but I just don't know what to do....
My last phone was a Nexus One and I had CM7 running on it. Was very happy with it but it seems there still isn't a fully working stable CM for this phone yet( at least from what I am seeing on this site ). Additionally, a friend did the rooting and put the ROM on my phone for me. That option is no longer available so I will have to do it myself. Now I can follow directions pretty well. I was able to root my Kindle Fire without issue. My problem is knowing who/what to follow.
There are a bunch of different methods of rooting the phone ( or so it seems ), some make sense, some seem cryptic. I need to know which one to use which is clearly descriptive and makes little to no assumptions of the users knowledge ( I mean android rooting knowledge. I don't need assistance in unzipping files and whatnot ). I just don't know how to pick the right method for my scenario. I'd also like suggestions on what might be a real solid fully functional and easily installable ROM that might be a good choice for me. I'm quite comfortable with ROM Manager( and paid for premium ) so anything that is compatible with that would be desirable.
I've looked through the One S dev forums and there's just too much for me to make heads our tails out of. Any help/guidance would be appreciated.
If the answer is "There is nothing out there yet to meet your requirements and lack of Android knowledge" I'll understand.
Thanks all,
Mike

It's not hard at all to root. Yes there's a few different thread inn the dev section but I use this one.

Skip to step 8 on a 3 step process? This is the kind of place my Android Moronicism ( Did I invent a word? ) kicks in.

The best thing to do is treat the 3 steps as separate procedure.
Step 1 is all done on HTCDev.com, once you're on HTCDev.com you'll understand the "skip to step 8" thing.

Thanks a bunch. My brain just wasn't wrapping around the fact that it was referencing HTCs site and not the procedure I'm reading. Thanks bunchloads!!
Now I just need some suggestions for a good ROM. Looks like CM9 is just not yet there for someone of my skill level.

Once you have your custom recovery install make a nandroid backup.
Flash and play with a few ROMs to see what you like.
Also ask yourself do you like to to be almost like stock or AOSP type ROM.
Don't think in term of CM9 id not for your skill level, it's for everyone. Just flash and play areound with it, if you don't like it move on to the next.
I think once you get the hang of flashing ROM you'll be addicted to it.

CM9 is fairly good enough to use as a daily drive, though it may random lose signal (around one time per day or less).

BTW: You get OTA updates with ROM Manager with my TrickDroid ROM..

Also I have tried LiquidSmooth rom several days ago and always have random reboots after several hours using. You may wait for the next release if you want to try it.

Well,
I'm rooted and now on CM 9. It didn't reinstall all my apps so I had to manually push them all back down but it's up and running and much quicker than stock ROM. Thanks again for all the replies!!

You need to read mudknot's stickied guide front to back several times. The best advice anyone can give you on it is read, read, read, and read some more. The process is not complicated, but is not easy by no means. It will happen if you read, be patient, don't rush, and follow the steps precisely.

There are two methods on how to root....there is the (Hack Kit)... And the (simple one click ) by bubby... I used the one click method... But read read read...

Everyone is correct. Reading first will help things go a lot smoother. I would recommend attn1 hack kit. You have a lot of roms to choose from. Just take your time. If you really get stuck or don't understand then ask.
I agree. Read and one click

Root password?
Im trying to follow the Ace Hack Kit (v11), but when I try to run the hack-ace.sh code, it asks me for the root password, which I don't know and can;t find anywhere online. I feel like an idiot for asking, but what is it? Ive been searching for hours.
Im running OS X 10.6.6, and the phone is Kernel version 2.6.32.21-g6a5ff14 [email protected] #1, if that helps at all.
Im new to rooting, Ive been a Jailbreaker until I just switched to Android. I understand everything in the hack guide, just cant get past the simplest step it feels like. Someone help me out?
And sorry for putting this on someone else's thread... it wouldnt let me post an original for some reason.

Lol. Man the keyboard really had it in for you on that one.
I like "blowy" though. It's a refreshing change.
I have had two inspires and on my first one I used Bubby's rooting program only because it did not require the use of command prompt as much as the Hack kit did at the time, but on my second inspire I used the hack kit because that has truly been turned into a fool proof way of rooting and it seem's that bubby has abandoned his rooting program because it has not been updated for sometime. The hack kit does it all for you all you have to do is tell it what you want done by entering either a 1,2 or a 3 and it does the rest.
As for rom's I use the Coredroid because it is closer to the HTC stock sense and Surgio keeps up on the updates and the bugs also.
I'm on my first Android with the Inspire and rooted a few days ago using the hack kit... it was very simple and all went well. I've gone through a few roms already, probably didn't give each enough time but wanted to find something I liked and now ended up with GingerBeast. There is a problem with GPS though with Gingerbread but if you look for gingerbread gps fix it can be taken care of easily.
You should give each rom at least a week to see how it works, there is a wierd thing with rom's they need a couple of days to settle in to the phone and to see how the battery and everything else work with that certain rom, that is why I have chosen one rom and have stuck with it through two inspires, I have found coredroid to be the best rom for my purposes and none other fit the bill.
I am also new to Rooting of my inspire, but not a noob to android by anymeans. I searched and searched through and through the thread with the simple one click root. I understand what it is that i need to do.
But for the life of me, i cannot get the simple one click root application to download and install on my computer. I have my antivirus and all off, firewall turned off. I download the file, it starts extracting and unziping. Then it goes to installation. The green bar at the bottom gets up to about 90% full, then the entire screen just closes by itself and thats it.
Restarted my computer 4 times and tried it again 4 times last night with the same results. SO i guess my question is not going to be how to root, i think i got a grasp on that one, but can someone point me in the direction of a different link for the one click app or lend some advice of how i can get it installed.

I had the same problem with my old XP laptop. I studied for a month, was sure I had my PC set up correctly. And Bubby's just would not run on my PC. Ended up using the hack kit which worked. One thing they do say to make sure you have the latest .FrameworkNet and Java consoles installed, for something to check.
Thanks for the response. It is appreciated. I did do those updates amd still no luck. Guess its the hack kit for me.

And anything else i should know about the devise i am looking forward to joining the xoom xda community,
That guide to rooting should do the trick for you. The hardest part is setting up ADB and fast boot, but really that isn't very difficult. Just make sure to type things correctly when using the command prompt! Haha. Also, that recovery by Solarnz works just fine, but I use the Team Rogue recovery. And I don't know if you've figured it out on your own, but no ROM for the Xoom is worth flashing unless it's ICS. But! you did say it was a work Xoom, and I don't know how much "legal" freedom you're going to be allowed.
Team EOS ROM v 1 and Steady Hawkins CM9 Kang both ran great on my Xoom (4G). You getting to the Xoom party just as its getting good. Honeycomb vs. ICS is a night and day difference.

Fastboot and the like are pretty easy/simple to use after a while, especially if you're familiar with the command line/prompt.
Basically the procedure is:
1. Unlock Device
2. Root and install recovery (I like to do this from fastboot as well)
3. Flash ROM then GApps
4. Reconfigure home screens and accounts for the eleventy billionth time.
5.?????
6. Profit! (sorry. I had to)

I followed those instructions and were able to unlock the bootloader and root my Xoom WiFi without any issues, and I'm a dork at rooting. I will especially recommend installing the alternative ADB setup which is mentioned in step 2.3.

Looks like the devs are not working on Root for 1.85

Arg....seems like the devs have moved on to getting s-off and coming out with new roms and have given up on finding exploits to root 1.85. The threads for root have been empty for a while now...wondering if its time to exchange the phone or return it and want for the sg3?
I know i'm not the only person frustrated for upgrading to 1.85....
I thought you could RUU back to 1.82 if you wanted and then root?

You can. That is what I did. It's pretty simple.
Revert to 1.82, root,
one click superCID
relock in fast boot
ruu 1.85
flash the unlock token from fastboot, it took me a few tries before it took
flash a recovery (twrp is working well for us right now)
and then use the recovery to flash the SU zip file. Then you're all set
Well this is how it works.
Once you update your RUU to 1.85 then install CWM (flashing utility in recovery) You will just flash the Rom you wish this will give you root.
Hope this clears things up?
I'm unclear on the rooted 1.85 but from what I gather you have to have done superCID hack before upgrading to be able to gain root. I believe you have to also have superCID to do ruu to a previous firmware. I may be wrong but if your on 1.85 without superCID I think your SOL for now atleast.

Yes, it's simply amazing how many people will write such non-useful crap that serves no useful purpose.
Look, we've all been there. We all had to learn from the beginning at some point.
I'm also sick of people lobbing ignorant comments my way when it comes to some of the things I do for others, especially here on xda. Case in point ...
Over the last three days I've prepared a 36-page manual that describes, in great detail, how to do virtually everything on a ONE X. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678308
It's sad when, after working an average of 70 hours per week as President an owner of my LED lighting company, plus having a 2-1/2-year-old at home, who's a wonderful challenge, plus having issues with my 82-year-old mother suffering from Alzheimers, I still MAKE time to help others, most especially here on xda. Why? Because it's the right thing to do. As I said above, we've all been there, and I'm quite sick and tired of so many others (THEY shall remain nameless), who can't spend a few extra seconds of their precious time to provide a better explanation than the simple "just do it in fastboot," or "use adb," etc.
Yes, I've now learned exactly what these two simple statements mean, but it really would have been nice, and far, far, far easier not just for me, but everyone if, instead of saying the following ...
flash it in fastboot
...they instead said something like ...
open a command prompt, navigate to your adb folder, and flash in fastboot using the following line:
fastboot flash recovery xxxxxxx.img
Wow, it took me an extra 10 seconds. Oh, my goodness, my fingers are now so sore. I think I'll head to the hospital. Be back later.
Peter
P.S. And don't anyone dare tell me, like someone did yesterday, that I should basically shut up and stop "sassing" (their word) the developers because they work so hard at what they do. You know, I probably work as hard if not MUCH harder than most of them, yet I will always try my very best to give some of my time to others. Again, as I said above, it's the right thing to do. You know, maybe if more people did just that, the world wouldn't be so full of self-centred, egotistical ingrates.

Wow. All that and I'm not sure it will even work. Makes me realize how nice it is to have devices like the Nexus that are not locked down as much as HTCs latest on AT&T.
It also seems like Samsung devices are not as difficult to deal with than HTC and the locked bootloader and S-On.

I'm confused. I only see one link labeled aahk. Download that one. As for what to do after you download it, it comes with a manual. Read it. It gives extremely clear instructions.

You don't need to. It will work on windows as well.
I would strongly suggest to read the whole manual (effen manual - it's actually named like that) before starting. If you downloaded the hack kit/ran the kit with your antivirus on, the chances of it not working are high.
Thus, read before starting anything. Because if you mess up (the hack kit is quite simple if you understand what you are doing) but if you mess up with something so easy, it's going to take a whole lot more to fix it. READ EVERYTHING IN THE SITE BEFORE YOU PLUG IN YOUR PHONE, THEN READ IT AGAIN. WE ARE NOT KIDDING ABOUT READING. IT IS YOUR PHONE, YOUR RESPONSABILITY.
Keep in mind what android version you are on. THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Yes, it does.. i have 2.3.5 and it runs on 3.20.502.52
Make sure that when you run aahk the you shut down any firewall and anti virus programs or you will run into issues. Some people been having issues where anti virus programs treat aahk as a virus and will stop it from working. Last thing you want is in the middle of rooting for aahk to stop working.

Well, read buddy. Cause everything you gotta do is just that to understand. After you have read (several times) how to proceed, and if you feel confident then go ahead.
I'll pop quiz you to make sure you have.

Ok, my humble advice is that you spend MUCH more time reading before running the Hack Kit. This is not like other phones that the process is painless. Unfortunately, HTC locks its bootloaders so you need S-OFF before anything else.
If you really can't find something in a web site that has 2 or 3 entries, then take time to think about rooting. Don't do it untill you get acquainted with all the information you are being given.
Rooting your build OS is not enterily for noobs, so or you get help via teamviewer or just take some more time to fully understand what you are about to do...

I know, Im just too confused with all the terms, S-off, bootloaders, RUU.. I think I do need to search more and wait till I totally know what is to be done, Else I'll mess up my phone surely!
I think I should wait, and stay with whatever I have. I needed ICS. But I'll wait!
One ques., the most confusing thin is that "No temproot for Inspire for 3.20.502.52" which is written on the site of aahk, means what? Inspire can't be rooted which have this? Coz i have the same one.!
But anyways, thanks guys for taking time out! I do need some learning to be done.
If possible could u plz put up some youtube videos to help beginners like me, so that they can make full use of their phones! Or post link here if u know any video that might help me.
I need the ICS! It would be really heplful!
But thanks guys, you have been great help trying to explain! I'll continue my search! I'll wait and will keep in touch here.
Thanks alot!
Everything you just asked for has already been given to you. You gotta read. Good luck.

[Q] New here.. Desprately need help..

Hi.. I'm going to be as brief as I can..
I had to get my phone replaced because it got all "defective" on me.. No joke.. it wouldn't Charge, wouldn't call, txt, turn off, tried everything.
called tmobile they said that it was a known issue and that I would have to call samsung about the warrantee. Called Samsung "Call Tmobile"
called tmobile "can't help sorry". Took the phone into the store.. "oh you have the $7.99 insurance! call them" Called Insurance.. "It's not covered call Tmobile". called tmobile "call insurance". finally got someone to actually listen to me after about 6 hours of being on my husbands phone! Got tmobile to send me a replacement. It was the very same SGS4G that I have loved for years.. Then I turned it on... New Load Screen... Gingerbread... (I was on froyo 2.2 before and NEVER had a problem with anything until the phone went completely nuts)
So now my phone....
Can't Send txts without it being MMS
Bounces from 4G to Searching whenever it wants (most of the time it's in searching or just enough signal to make calls)
takes forever to download even the smallest apps..
Basically it's become a phone that I want nothing to do with..
So I talked to my dad knowing that he did alot of rooting stuff to his Droid
He told me "Root the Phone! Put the Rom you want on it and Make it work how you want it. Look up Xda-developers" <-- for a solution it didn't seem to get better than that!
That was my Headache.... Now for my Problem..
As I was reading through tons of stuff on here I saw that there was Slim ICS.. then I saw the "Not Working" section..
then there were different programs that are needed to install different things...
not to mention that I don't want to over work my processor which is a 1Ghz processor
As for a Modem... no clue which to pick... I just need a better connection altogether..
Could You please let me know which things run the best together..
Which programs do I need to root, install etc.. these things
and I'm soo confused right now it's not even funny.. My dads droid was soo easy for him to root and change that he's confused at the process that the SGS4G needs..
Any advice or help at all would be amazing!
I will be eternally grateful for any help at all!
Please feel free to laugh at my situation.. I know I am..
This all started as a desperate cry for something better than what my phone has become.. although I think that this whole thing is going to become one big funny story lol
First of all, you need to root your phone, then we'll talk after that. Go read the how to root thread in this forum. It is an easy process. Read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375517

One Slight problem with rooting it lol... from all of the info I'm getting here on the site it says I need to download something to root it...
I would really love to get all of the stuff needed so that once I root I can just get the whole process done with.
My dad is also on thephone with me right now.. yes at 3:35am lol..
He's trying to help me look through Roms and help me pick the best one. However he doesn't know much about my phone because he's with verizon...
What I need to know is what stuff works best together.. You know, the least amount of bugs and problems. I want to know from someone more experienced than ether me or my dad because We have been looking at this stuff for almost 10 hours... o_0 and it's not getting any less confusing lol.
Thank you
Serenity

Follow the guides to root your phone. Then start looking at roms.
Most likely you'll want to start out with a GB rom and move around from there, you still have to root it to install those.

so the link told me..... "No thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator"
as far as the first link.. there are different programs to root your phone with... which one works the best.
The first one that you sent me to which is the One-Click thingy... sounded great at first! However I also have to download some C ++ thingy and something else before I could even use the program to root the phone..
Honestly a good program would be 1 program to root, one program to install. That kinda thing..
not 1 program to root... wait before you root install these 2 programs then stand on your head and download program 3... i mean honestly that kind of multi program stuff makes me wonder where the "Take this survey to unlock your download" screen is gonna be... lol
What would be the fun if you just clicked a button and everything worked.. Clearly something happened to your phone and you paid good money for it to work the first time. Luckily all this is free.

I hear that lol... although it took my phone 2 1/2 years to mess up lol.. but yes this is free.. and very very very confusing... but free lol
The least confusing way to do this is a heimdall one-click. Yes, you gotta have Java and the c++ runtime for windows installed but the links are provided right in the first post of the thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498
Starting from stock gb if you wanna go to ics download Eollie's one-click in the second post.
Now you should have the correct recovery to get to ics.
Currently the most functional ics rom I think is aokp which has auto-brightness working right out of the box.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1733097
A few things here and there aren't quite working on any ics rom:
Wifi calling
Tv out
...can't think of more now but those are probably most notable.
All you gotta do is follow instructions on the links I just posted. That's as easy as it gets. Really.
O. I forgot, to get into download mode turn off phone, hold volume up and down, plug phone into pc.
To get into recovery turn off phone, hold volume up and down, hold the power button until the second screen comes up, keep holding volume buttons. Recovery will come up.
You should also understand that as great as ICS is, you sacrifice some battery life over GB. There are so many great ROM's for this phone, you just need to see which works best for you. Check out this link... All of the information you need regarding ROM's, kernels, modems, etc. can be found here.

Serenity8525 if you haven't bricked your device because you were linked to advanced level posts. Click on the purple link in my signature. Yes it is long and might take a while to get through, but once you are done and did not rush through you should be comfortable enough to use the one click linked in my signature.
For the others that have attempted to help. Remember in the future lumin30's guide should always be linked to new people. It is very detailed and noob friendly.

Plus if you want to help people its best to know what all is available and easiest for a complete noob.

Ok so I would like to say thanks for everyones help... No the device isn't bricked because I haven't even rooted yet.. I want to get all the info all the things that I will need, understand the process then start the process of "NOT Bricking my phone" lol...
I don't think that it's possible to sacrifice some battery when my phone only stays alive for 20-30 minutes... the GB update messed the phone up soo bad it's not even funny... if I was still on Froyo I wouldn't have any desire to Root or change the OS.
As far as that link.... it's not usable... it's listed there 2 times back to back. I did however shorten it until it worked and thank you
Just I do know how to get into DL and Recovery mode I have had to do this a million times over when on the phone with Tmobile trying to trouble shoot the issues that have come up since i got the replacement phone with GB. I can not begin to count the number of factory resets this phone has on it...

Heh, I said that about going to GB, then going to ICS. Now I dread when I have to run GB to see how things worked "back then" when doing dev work.
The good news is that with the one-click-back-to-stock packages now available, along with a good backup utility like Titanium Backup Pro, it is a lot easier that it once was. I won't say it's "fool proof" as there are many people who are foolish enough not to read current threads about how to flash and upgrade an SGS4G, or foolish enough to flash a ROM, kernel, or "tweak" that isn't intended for the SGS4G or the Android version they are running.
Serenity8525 if you know how to get into DL mode download the one click in the purple link it will get you onto stock plus root with custom recovery. Then from there follow the directions in the ICS thread you want to flash. Just make sure it is from this forum and not the sister phones. As long as you follow the directions you will be hard pressed to brick the phone.
Like jeffsf stated once you get on a working form of either ics or gb you will wonder how you ever dealt with froyo. I suggest however to flash a different rom once you get the one click in my sig flashed. And just for safety's sake flash it twice and the second time click the flash bootloaders box.

sounds like a plan... although i know it will ultimately come down to personal preferences but is there a specific setup that works best?
setup as in...
Rom
Modem
Kernel
etc...?
honestly thats what the main question was. Yea I gave background and what not. Yes I asked what program was easiest to use. People have answered those. However what people didnt answer was the setup variations that work well together.
I mean after all the rooting and rom gets installed and im still on GBis there a combo i can use to get my signal going again? Right now if I want to make a call I have to use wifi calling... since that isnt working in ICS... I dont want to get ICS and not be able to make anycalls. I have a tower about 2-3 miles away from me and never have signal. If rooting the phone doesnt fix the signal what would i need to change to get it working?
so I'm gonna start out simple..
Root with GB cause from what I can tell WIFI calling still works on a GB Rooted phone.
I'm guessing that just rooting my phone and staying with GB will mean that better Kernels and modems will not be compatible?
If that's true then my signal will still be nothing..
but with
ICS
I will need ether wifi calling to work or upgrade the Kernel or Modem... so...
I need setup ideas
GB rooted
Kernel?
Modem?
etc...
and just to play it safe if you guys could help with the ICS setup too
ICS rooted (I think the post was about AOPK?... which has the most stuff working. so that will be the one I would use)
Kernel?
Modem?
etc...
Again Thank you everyone who has been helping me
