Wrong Directions? - General Questions and Answers

I'm all ready to flash a custom rom on my device and came across this: How To Load Custom ROM on Your Android Device (After Using the Revolutionary Method), ( <---- type this link into google apparently im not allowed to post outside links so just type it in to google) however no where in the instructions is he wiping the cache partition or dalvik cache, I've heard from most people if you don't wipe the cache you could end up with a phone eating a bowl of boot loops, or having a paperweight, so is he wrong or is it not important, please explain?

Yes it is very important when flashing a rom or flashing just about anything else to wipe cache and delvik cache. Also if flashing a rom for the first time you must delete all data/factory reset. Wiping the caches will never hurt anything it will just make your phone take a while to boot the first time so don't be afraid to do it when flashing anything

It is important as the last person explained. Though check your phone model and see if it has a hidden recovery or boot loader. Phones like my triumph let me get my phone back even it gets stuck in a boot loop or corrupts the recovery menu.

Oh okay thank you both, its just I have an htc aria, and I want to flash a rom, but I don't know how, I have it rooted, but i don't know how to flash a rom successfully, because I don't want to brick it.

[Q] Help needed - stuck on CM10 boot-up animation

Hi All,
I have the Telstra HTC One XL, and have just recently attempted to install CM10 ROM - however have run into some problems that I would appreciate some advice to rectify. I had recently updated to Jelly Bean OTA.
I followed the guide on these forums - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1859478
I Successfully unlocked bootloader by following the steps at HTCdev.com
I Successfully installed TWRP Custom Recovery
I Downloaded CM10 as per - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790032. I transferred this as well as Google Apps onto my phones storage.
When attempting to install CM10, I created the Nandroid backup as recommended, and proceeded to wipe the mentioned items using TWRP (a guide I saw said to wipe everything). This is when my Nandroid back-up got wiped. TWRP gives you the option to wipe cache, delvik cache, factory reset, system, external storage, internal storage and format data. I did alll of these, and this was my mistake I believe? I proceeded to try and install CM10 and gapps from internal storage (I had to re load these back on after I wiped everything), and the install of CM10 displayed as successful.
Upon rebooting to system, the HTC screen comes up first and then goes to the CM10 animation. The phone then stays on this animation (rotating circle) for up to 10-15 minutes.
I have read thread after thread with people experiencing similar issues, and have tried rectifying my problem with various versions of roms and different guides out there. I can still boot into recovery (TWRP) mode via bootloader, and this means I can still mount my phone's storage onto my PC and have access to the storage directory. As I have deleted the Nandroid backup though, and because the ROM's won't install, I am stuck in no man's land.
There must surely be a way to have a ROM installed (even if its back to stock Telstra) from the position I am in, it would be greatly appreciated if someone may be able to point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Robbie
maybe yall need to "fastboot flash boot boot.img" now

Why do people keep doing this??? Just because TWRP gives you all those options, doesn't mean you should use them.
Sometimes, people will say to do a "full wipe" when flashing a ROM. But that term is a bit misleading. Factory reset (from TWRP, never from hboot), wipe Dalvik and wipe cache is all that is technically required when flashing a new ROM. Some people like to wipe more "just in case". But if you aren't completely confidant in what you are doing, keep in simple and don't make it more complicated than it needs to be.
I don't know if wiping everything is the cause of your woes, but it certainly didn't help, and caused you to do some extra steps.
Flash boot.img via fastboot as previously suggested. Otherwise, just try to re-download and flash the files agin. Its seems that some people are having troubles booting after flashing CM10 (even after doing the correct wipes and flashing boot.img). Doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason, but just flashing again has fixed the problem for at least one person.
Thanks so much, such a simple fix! That has me booted up into CM10.
I have installed cm-10-20130107-NIGHTLY-evita and cm-10.0.0-evita , however with both of these versions, my touch screen is not working once it boots up. I can function with the volume up/down, and with the power buttons, but cannot get past my SIM card lock screen.
I noticed this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2083314 (no solution yet)...
Does anyone have a solution to this issue that seems a common one?
Alternatively, more than happy to get an alternative ROM on my phone in the interim...Can someone recommend me a ROM?
Again, I really appreciate the quick response to my problem, very happy my phone is in operation!

[Q] Juopunutbear successful but still stuck on bootloader screen, HELP!!!

I can't figure out what else I need to do. My HBOOT reads 1.45.1313 now instead of 1.45.0013, which is what it read before. Tried to boot a couple of ROMS but none where successful, now I am back on the stock ROM. Can someone please lead me in the right direction.

I did both of the wipes, cache and dalvik, but nothing past that.
also factory reset and once 4ext recovery is up and running on this phone use the reformat all option (cant wait for 4ext!)
for now a fastboot -w will be next best thing
fastboot erase system -w
also make sure to follow the instructions in op of rom of choice(gapps, seperate kernel, etc)
and remember first boot may take some time - if youre still stuck try and post a logcat
It worked!!!

[Q] Are flashing more than 10 times in a day is dangerous?

Hello Everyone  ,
Like same with the title, i have some question.
Are flashing more than 10 times in a day is dangerous for phone hardware or something else?
Because, almost every I installing a new ROM for my phone it's got fail. Like boot loop, stuck on brand logo. And that's why I flashing again and again.
Thanks in advance
My Phone Info :
Brand : Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc S
Model : LT18i
Boot loader : Locked
10 times a day???
Do you even have time for anything else besides flashing your phone???
But seriously, there shouldn't be any harm done by flashing unless the flash itself gets interrupted. If you are boot looping and getting stuck after a flash, you may not be performing the pre-flash wipe fully. Some ROMs require different levels of pre-flash wiping before they can be flashed successfully. Some require a dalvik cache wipe, some require a permissions fix, most others just require a standard factory reset. Also some ROMs will only install if the ROM you are coming from is a stock release, and other ROMs will only work on either locked or unlocked boot loaders. If you are on a locked boot loader, your options for ROMs are limited.
Have fun, good luck.

Thanks for your answer and your advice,
Yes. Actually, i have time for anything else besides flashing. But, what I'm doing it's like multitasking. I'm just follow my mind
Actually, I have done before flashing with wipe/factory reset, format system, data, cache, wipe dalvik cache and battery. But, after I have done with installing a new ROM, my phone got stuck on Sony logo. I don't know what's wrong, are my phone wrong or the zip file wrong.
And, this the link of ROM that I installing now : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2131090
I install with version 2.5.
And I have search in that post of my problem, but result is nothing.

No Dalvik Cache?

Hello everyone. I have a little issue with my phone. I had JellyBam installed and I wanted to run an RUU to restore my phone and do a hardware warranty claim before I leave the country. I did a nandroid backup with TWRP before starting the process.
After I flashed the stock ville recovery i remembered i need to unlock my phone so I could use it in foreign countries. I wanted to use this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1693491
I flashed TWRP and wanted to restore my nandroid backup. It said it failed and I dont believe it told me why it failed.
So then I thought I dont really need my old settings I just need a rooted phone to run some codes in the terminal and get the unlock code. So I decided to flash the jellybam zip folder along with its corresponding kernel. After rebooting it was stuck on the HTC logo.
When I tried to wipe Dalvik cache it said it failed. Then I was wondering if it was just from the recovery so i tried it with CWM. After selecting advanced, wipe Dalvik Cache. it didnt show the list of NO,NO,NO,NO,YES,NO. and it didnt say it failed either.
I think I hit a dead end... could someone please help me? Is the Dalvik cache gone or something?
I never had this happen but I think, if you completely wiped, installed a fresh Rom and never booted once its logically there's no dalvik as its only created on initial boot up.

(GUIDE)Full Wipe For Installing Roms Perfectly

I know this is not a development thread but I must insist we have something like this in this area. I feel it's important to all development for accurate results and debug information.
I see this all the time. People think they are fully wiping when a developer asks for it. I believe that some people still don't understand what a full wipe is because there is no such single option in ClockWorkMod Recovery. Most likely the reason for that is because Koush didn't want too many posts about "I'm stuck on Google logo" or "my phone won't boot". So here is a test you can do yourself: Backup your ROM of course, and then do a full wipe. Then don't install anything and just reboot. If you end up pass the Google logo and onto the boot loop screen, then what you think is a full wipe is incorrect. If you are stuck on the Google logo and nothing is happening however, then congratulations... you know what you're doing
For the rest of you, here are proper steps to fully wipe without leaving any trace of ROM on your phone:
* wipe data/factory reset
* format /system
* format /boot
Now most people think that the first option is enough. That may often be the case but because the developer can drastically change the contents of the /system folder, things can get messed up if you don't format it. And guess what, that first option will not do it. Wipe data/factory reset only wipes the /data folder which contains your personal settings and all the apps you installed. The ROM is then left blank as if you just flashed it and you can start over. FYI, the format of boot partition simply wipes the boot animation and you can restore it using the advance option in recovery from ROM to another.
I've seen some zip files which do this automatically so that's fine but at least you know what needs to be done to fully wipe.
There you go. I hope this clears some things. Now lets flash some ROMs!

i cant get rid of the boot logo.. tried it hundred times, but the problem remains.. after flashing any rom, i first get the canvas logo, and then the rom boot animation starts,,, and cant even see the "format\boot" option.. is there a problem with the CWM recovery or my device?? CWM recovery is "CWM-based Recovery v6.0.1.2" (compiled by Bruno Martins)

You can't exactly Wipe or remove the boot logo, but you have to Overwrite it! So just choose the boot logo you want and then download it and flash the zip file! Here is the Stock Boot logo.
thanx buddy this guide really helps me
