Hi everyone,
I have been wondering if there's a way to backup my personal dictionary from the stock Android keyboard which I always have to populate every time I flash a new ROM or an update that needs a full wipe. (Android doesn't have a Filipino dictionary yet.)
I'm thinking maybe one of you guys know if there's a file I can pull from the system folders of the ROM using root explorer, and then restore later on whenever I clean flash a new ROM in order to preserve my personal dictionary.
I've tried backing up the keyboard app before, then restoring app data only using titanium backup, but that didn't work.
Hope you guys know how a work-around for this. Thanks in advanced!

did it end up working? I've used mybackuppro to do it, and that works. I've had issues with titanium being able to do it before.

Haven't really been able to test it yet since I haven't changed ROMs yet. Maybe when AOSP JB ROMs start popping up, I might try other ROMs, but for now, I'll stay with what I have.
I couldn't find how to backup User defined dict with TiBackup.
Tips please

The list under the "Backup/Restore" tab in Titanium Backup shows an entry "User Dictionary" as a system app, if this is what's being referred to. I reckon if you backup everything, it should be listed there.
I use GO backup
It does the dictionary too and also has the easy UI i.e very easily understandable as compared to others

For me user dictionary backup and titanium ... both wont work,
It just learns from facebook and gmail.

Is there a way to "unpack" it from whole backup rom using win7, instead of manually reinstalling it on device and extracting it? I think I used cwm for backup.

When you talk about your APPS....please use titanium backup...it always works.
Yes, Titanium backup is great. Although one downside is that you need to root your phone before you can make a full backup. So you would first have to root the stock ROM, make a titanium backup, then flash a new ROM, then restore the backup.
Mybackup root is good for SMS and call log.

Im already rooted and I have the titanium backup free version. I don't see anywhere that I can make a full backup just individual apps and info ( sorry for being duh an android noob, I'm used to jailbreaking iPhones which is child's play)
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe u need the paid version to back up batches. Free is individual apps but I may be wrong

You can batch backup in free version but u need the paid version to batch restore. Free version only allows u to restore one app at a time.

On titanium backup, select backup/restore, after a short delay, top right look for an icon that looks like a sheet of paper, with a tick , select it, the next page look to see where it says backup all user apps n data, think it seems second or third option in the backup section.

Basically all's I want to backup is my 700 snes roms and all their saves....I guess I could get on a comp and put the folder on there, flash it, and drag it back. Thank you all for the help

Those are saved onto the SD card, no need to backup those (unless you really want to). Wiping the phone before a flash does not wipe the SD card.

Download Super Backup (contacts, sms, call logs ) and App Backup & Restore from Play Store free. These two apps work even though you are UNROOTED.

I've been trying to find some spare time to work on a new version of AppExtractor and I'm to a point where I'm looking for testers / feedback.
AppExtractor is a tool which will allow you to restore individual applications, data, SMS, and MMS messages from your nandroid backups.
The new version of AppExtractor supports CWM 6 backups (which restores faster than other backups), CWM 5, and TWRP. I have also updated the UI and some other tweaks to hopefully speed up restoring from backups.
If you are interested, please give this new version a test drive and let me know what you think and any issues that you run into.

Sorry - I'll update the OP... AppExtractor lets you extract apps/data/settings from your nandroid backups (CWM, TWRP).

I tried it, doesn't seem to be able to restore data though. Kudos for being able to read from the CMW6 backups in the first place .... It would be great if it was possible to restore individual apps' data though, it's most of the purpose of such a utility. Oh, also it couldn't restore nether my sms nor my phone data either...
Okay I have been unable to restore SMS/MMS using the app. At first I thought it was only related to CWM and the new Backup file system Koush went to (which he changed again), so I dumped CWM for TWRP which I thought would fix the issue. Turns out I was wrong when restoring from a TWRP SMS/MMS restore says it completes but the message list is still empty (even after a reboot).
Any thoughts on a fix.

Using on a CWM 6 recovery Samsung S3 4g, had to manually change card location to extSdCard and then it found the backup. Sadly once it finds it, it opens the backup up but can't see anything inside it. Will wait for further updates.

this great tool allows you to restore app/data from nandroid backup than ti doesnt

when i try to restore from cwm6 backup i see a blank app list, if i open a cwm5 backup, the app list is filled.
any ideas?

You are right, so there is only one application that supports CWM v6 backup format, and this application is called nandroid manager.

There is some issue with it:
There is no feature to restore contact
The feature to rename (the pen icon) is breaking the restoring through CWM afterwards, because the md5 checking script is based on the original folder name
For me Restore call logs was not working at all
Not sure Restore wifi was working, same for bluetooth.

I'm owning a HTC One S since a few days, rooted, and I'm wondering about the best way to back up my device.
Actually I'd like to know what is the most powerful (i.e. more complete) backup app/method: Titanium/Go Backup (or similar), nandroid, or this one: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/ultimate-backup-tool-no-root-required/ ?
If I wipe my cell, which method will allow me to restore it with same apps installed, same icons at the same place, same data and settings for each app (just like a Norton Ghost/Acronis TrueImage)? I think it's the nandroid backup, but I'm not an expert...
2nd question : if I loose this phone and I buy a new one (exact same), will I be able to restore my backup in the new one? Would it work?
3rd question : what about a non-rooted device (thinking to my wife's One V)? can I do a "Ghost" of her phone BEFORE I unlocked her phone's bootloader?

Don't know about go, but you are correct on everything else. App data is settings saved stuff etc, it's everything about that app. If you restore an app with data it will be exactly as it was when the backup was made.
You do need root to backup using titanium, but I think there are ways to back up some stuff, using other methods, but I don't know them.

Most people seem to gravitate to titanium. I use the app manager in ROM toolbox pro.
OK, question two, yes. Backup the folder from your sd card to a PC. If you get a new phone just copy it to the new phones sd card install titanium (or whatever you used) and restore.
As for three I think you need to be unlocked to install a custom recovery so I don't think so.
Edit: nandroids (what you refer to as a ghost) are done through a custom recovery.

You can, just need to find the system setting for the launcher and backup the data. As long as your new rom uses that same launcher. For example cm uses trebuchet. Apex and Nova are two popular third party ones. Widgets aren't saved though, everything else is.
If you're not using a launcher like apex or Nova I highly recommend you try it. I can't imagine going back to the stock launcher. Plus you don't have to worry about what launcher the rom uses, just back up your third party one like any other app and install on your new rom. Then hit home, set it as default, simple.

I just finished restoring my Samsung Galaxy SIII after jumping into the latest Verizon OTA without checking it out first. (Mistake!)
I like what I have now, but would like to see if a custom ROM might be a little less loaded with Samsung and Verizon bloat. I am not interested in tons of more tweaking options, just good wireless reception, and UI quickness. I do NOT want to repeat reinstalling all my apps from scratch, and setting them up again. I am rooted, unlocked, have TWRP, Odin, Titanium Backup Pro,Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. Can someone help make the transition into a new ROM as pain free, and easy as possible. Once again, I'm not asking about how to flash the ROM as much as I am asking about getting up and running after flashing. Thanks for your time and help.

Dear tgrobi one has to restore only data not the app as the app might clash with the contact app of one's new rom so what is advisable is to only restore data also titanium will give a warning message that restoring the app will not work properly and eventually result in a FC

You have to download app saver in the market. And backup your app. App saver make your app become .apk. Then just backup your .apk to your sd cars.

I have titanium backups and mess around flashing numerous roms.
Apps and their settings can easily be restored by making backups with titanium and restoring apps and data.
You can also save your contact list with it but if you have a google account and sync enabled your phone will restore contacts from your google account.
Is the Titanium Backup still a good advice now, after 8 years since this thread was started? I'm going to migrate my Moto G "falcon" from 4.4 to 7.1. I do have a paid version of Titanium Backup. Thank you!

I've never had problems restoring data between roms, but I've read many warnings against restoring apps when changing roms.
Also, when changing between very similar roms, you often don't need to wipe data, unless you are "downgrading" to a version compiled from older source.
You can always do a /system partition format and flash a new rom, then see if it will boot without issues. I've also be able to selectively wipe data for problematic apps to fix them.
I really don't like the nuclear option of factory resets, just because it can take hours to bring a phone back to a state similar to the state it was in, and it can affect saved states for some apps that attached to the device ID.

I have been having problems restoring apps with titanium backup and so far no one has been able to find the solution, I couldn't find a solution on google and titanium backup support isn't responding to my support request. Anyways, I'm trying to restore apps from pandasa123's unofficial cyanogenmod to matrixzone's unofficial cyanogenmod. When I restore on the free version it opens install window and then when it says installing it changes to app not installed. Suspected problem apps are Bloons TD 5, Drunken Wrestlers and Star Wars: Commander. When I had the free version, it seems after trying to restore drunkin wrestlers and it says app not installed then all the apps after say app not installed except a few like google authenticator. I tried again with the paid version and it still got stuck restoring things like drunkin wrestlers, bloons td 5, star wars commander. I have already tried the troubleshooting steps in tibu and have tried multiple times to restore. I have also tried older versions no luck. I could successfully restore those apps when I went from 4.4.4 to 5.0.
Also would there be any work around to manually restore the apps? Any other backup apps that are good?
Device: Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-I747M

Thanks, I don't restore any of my apps from the play store (unchecked "All Apps" in the restore screens on initial setup of the rom) but do have some games connected to Google Play Games. Would this solution still possibly work?
It still doesn't restore properly and it seems to also get stuck on a new game I downloaded called LogoMania too. I didn't add a Google account at setup until I had to go to the play store to download tibu and tibu pro but made sure auto restore was off in settings. I also unchecked the malware detection in google settings and saved the apps to my internal instead of external sd but still no luck.
You're more likely to have problems restoring entire apps with Titanium Backup than just restoring data; if you are having problems, try reinstalling the app from whichever source it came from, then restore data.
I've never had problems restoring data between roms, but I've read many warnings against restoring apps when changing roms.
Also, when changing between very similar roms, you often don't need to wipe data, unless you are "downgrading" to a version compiled from older source.
You can always do a /system partition format and flash a new rom, then see if it will boot without issues. I've also be able to selectively wipe data for problematic apps to fix them.
I really don't like the nuclear option of factory resets, just because it can take hours to bring a phone back to a state similar to the state it was in, and it can affect saved states for some apps that attached to the device ID.

So in order to only restore data, I would:
1. Install the app from Google Play
2. In tibu, do a batch restore and select "data only" instead of "apps+data"
Is that correct?

Yes.
One important step before you restore is the verify the backups. Go into TB->batch->Verify Backups. See if everything is okay with no errors.
Also, remember some apps may not be compatible with your upgraded Android version.

I verify every time. Also, I'm on android 5.0.2 already trying to get to another 5.0.2 rom I believe.
One more thing I forgot to mention: if you want to recover an app, try to recover it without data. Recovering data for apps between CM versions, or even app versions, can cause headaches sometimes (especially Google apps).
Also, TB has a website with help. Maybe there is an answer in the docs to help you.
