Question about mms.apk - Samsung Infuse 4G

I hope this is the correct place to ask.
I am running aokpcb_infuse4g_rc3_beta. I like the Mind of Mac 1.4 messaging app. The theming I like. I tried pushing the app to the system, copying it and installing it and even put it in the aokp Rom and re-flashing. I can't seem to get it to work. Can anyone help me out accomplishing this feat?

First go to system/app via a root explorer. Delete the mms.apk. Navigate to sd card(or wherever the mms.apk is at) and copy or move it to system/app. Change the permissions so they match everything else in the app folder. Then install it. Should work...

I don't think it will work mind of mac is gingerbread and aokp is ics

help: how to add removable apk to roms?

I wasn't able to find info about this until now. But I need to know how to make the apks I include in a rom removable. I guess, maybe, I have to copy into a different folder instead or /system/app. is it right?
thanks
you have to install it in data directory not in system directory. so data/app
ok, thanks, but, if it doesn't exist, should I create it?
no u should not create it because then it wouldnt be a proper directory for your rom, the rom may not recognize it, i think.
which rom are you on? most rom has a data directory, that is where third party apps are installed and where apps downloaded from the market is also installed
this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=556962&highlight=enomther
ok i see what u mean when there's no data directory. what you should test out first is go to market and download an app. then see where that app is install. see if it created a data directory or not. it should...
I had a look using root explorer, and there is a folder in the root called /data/app , and there inside are every installed apk, even the ones I installed by astro...
and there is another one called /data/data where I find folder of every app too
ANd another one called /data/app-private (there I found one apk that I downloaded from market.
I try to download a new one
Yup put your apks in data/app
on a related note, is there any way to flash unsigned ROMs? like if I want to drop .apk 's into the data folder of a rom before flashing?

ok your running a reg rom system, thus meaning 1.5/1.6 non hero. i can teach you step by step on how to set up "signing .zip's". its super super convenient!! i promise and its not to hard. just pm me if you need help. its way way easier to flash a rom with whatever apk you want then to push them and hope you pushed them to the right spot.

How to push apk to system partition?

Im coming from a Samsung Vibrant which was my first android phone and I loved it. Now this Nexus S has found my heart but for some reason whenever I try to push an app such as the touchwiz launcher to system/app it moves the app to that folder but for some reason it doesnt install even after reboot. I tried to even reset defaults in the launcher but that was a no go. What am I doing wrong? I am running NSCollab.
try
adb install <path_to_apk>
if its on the same folder as your adb then just type the .apk
that will only install it to SD card, not SYSTEM partition
to install to SYSTEM you will need to include the APK to the ROM to be flashed

Cant you just manually place it there with some like root explorer and manually install it?
I'm just getting to add an apk to an existing rom, I'll try adb install a lil later. But to me its odd since on the vibrant all I had to do was push to system partition and restart

yes...place it in the "system/app" folder
you will see all the other apk native to your ROM in that same folder
you may have to fix permissions (r,w/r/r)

I have fixed permissions and everything but still its a no go. I dont get it, when I try to install in that directory it doesnt install. I figure this is a nexus S thing? Can anyone confirm this working?
I am running CM7 btw and after flashing my vibrant with it I am no longer able to push to system/app in order to install apk. Is this a problem or feature of CM7?
Reboot after changing permission. Btw, what app are you pushing?

I tried pushing a modded version of the touchwiz launcher from the vibrant, theres a thread here somewhere in which someone was able to push without problems.
Edit: I tried rebooting but still not working. I also tried pushing a video player which others have successfully pushed and was unable to get that working either.

[Q] Deleting TW Launcher from system/app?

Hi all.
I'm, currently on ICBINB kI3 1.5 which came with the default launcher Touch Wiz.
I use launcher pro plus as my default launcher.
My question is will deleting twlauncher from system/app improve performance or battery life? Or will in cause instability?
-Any help is appreciated =]
-Note: Build prop contains "ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1"
Other Stuff: Ive tried editing the rom before flashing as in replacing twlauncher.apk with launcher pro.apk and that wood not load a homescreen on boot. ive tried adding the both into the rom before flashing and that was unstable. but of course there is a pretty high chance i did this process incorrectly.
Details: gs4g/ icbinb 1.5/ ext4 on all/ uv at 1.3/
I always delete it, and I too use LPP. I haven't noticed a difference either way
i too wonder about this question. I don't think it will improve battery any if you close down the TW launcher and set the other launcher as default. If anyone have more experience please confirm or correct my reasoning.
I always delete it to using Titanium Backup. After I delete it I go into TB's More settings and clean the dalvik cache.
I've never had an issue with anything. After a reboot LP gets installed as a system app.

this is because you put the wrong apk file into system/app. remember, it is not the apk from your data folder, it is the one from the cache folder. i have done this many, many times on multiple phones and it has always worked. uninstall launcher pro, reinstall it from the market. immediately use root explorer to go to the /cache folder and copy the download.apk file. rename it to w/e and put that file in the system/app OF THE ROM ZIP FILE. then flash THAT ZIP file. should work every time. dont just put it in your system/app of the rom currently loaded on your phone. doesnt work that way

You're the man! thanks. I think this is what I was missing. I remembered you tried to explain this process to me and I and I just failed. But again, thank you.
Can this be done for all apks? Like if I wanted pandora or google music as high priority system apps?
It can be done for most apps, but not all. Some apps install to more places than just data/app, so it won't work. it's trial and error, to be honest. But I guess that's half the fun, isn't it?

Jager, could you please reply with an example of what renaming a download.apk would look like.
I went into my cache folder using Root Explorer, long pressed the download.apk I have there and hit rename.
Do I literally change the name download.apk to w/e?
I'm sure this is a dumb question but I'm new to modding. I only very recently have learned enough to venture out of just flashing.
This is more than a curiosity for me. I want to learn and practice this kind of modding.
Thank you for your time and wisdom.

jerry,
i just name it whatever app it is. for example, i would rename download.apk to launcherpro.apk or to gosmspro.apk. I would, however, long press, click COPY, copy it to my "download" folder on my sd card, and then rename it. i do not MOVE the download.apk from the cache folder. i also do not rename it until i have copied it to my sd card. that just me though. i think the android system clears out the download.apk file by itself and it would be best to let it do that; as opposed to prematurely moving it and it causing errors.
After renaming the download.apk what do we do with it. Push to where?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
COPY the download.apk to any folder on your sdcard. Then rename it to whatever.apk
Copy this file to syatem/app in the new rom before you flash it.
From what ive been told this can be done from a lot of apps, but not all. So far ive tried and had good experiences with launcherpro, google music, and pandora.

A really easy way to do this as well is to use Titanium Backup.
If you currently have both TW and launcher pro on your phone... Open titanium backup and click on the middle tab up top labeled backup/restore.
Scroll down to TW launcher and select. It will give you an option to uninstall.
And launcher pro becomes your default and only launcher.
It also works to remove other system apps that you normally cannot as well.
Jiggly, while that may work, my approach does a couple of different things. It makes them true system apps, saves internal ROM and uses system ROM instead, cleans up a few things and it makes flashing a lot easier. With titanium backup, you ate not integrating the apps into the ROM. We are removing and adding things prior to flashing, causing less problems

As I stated earlier in this thread I too was using the "Titanium Backup method" and thought that my apps were System apps. That's what Titanium Backup says and they are red so they must be.
If I go into My system app folder using Super Manager I can see in my app list that they are not true System apps as Jager said. A system app looks like this in my app folder; My Account [SYS] Maps [SYS] Music [SYS] ect.
Here is what my "Titanium backup method" apps look like;
LauncherPro [SYS]Internal Only
Double Twist [SYS]Internal Only
Dolphin Browser HD [SYS]Movable
I noticed this a couple of weeks ago and that is why I was excited to see this thread. I know the method jager is describing is Superior to using TB. I'm working on "my" ROM now.
I just thought I'd throw this out there. There's nothing like a visual aid to put things into perspective.
jerry, let me know if you need help with that; or at least some pointers. i'm not raver or dsexton (krylon and drhonk goes without being said), but i still have a few tricks up my sleeve.

[APP] CM9 Modified MMS apk

EDIT:
Reported as not working. =(
Hello,
scrolling through the forum and found this. Quickly read through it and it should work for most phones. Ill give it a try in a bit on my skyrocket with ICS.
Must have a Deodexed Rom installed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583232
trying it now
Make sure you do a back up before. It hasnt been tested w/ the skyrocket yet. I am doing a nandroid then applying it.
doesnt work, it opens, but crashes almost immediately, a freeze, then in 30 seconds force closes...it looks sooo nice though!!
How did you get it to install. I tried to copy it into the system/app folder and it wants to replace it, i hit yes, and it doesnt replace it... Getting frustrated.
rename the old Mms.apk to "Mms.apk.bak" and then paste the new "Mms.apk" onto /system/app/ and it will install, then reboot...
Trying to rename it and it keeps saying i dont have the rights. I used Root Explorer and when i hit the Ro/Rw button it wont change it to RW. Then i used ES File Explorer and i clicked the option to enable RW on /system but it still wont let me rename it. Using the ICS NexusMod BETA 3.
your system isnt writeable, flash a different rom, or different kernel..
Trying this on MHX 5.0 will report back shortly. Nope.
issue seems to me is that there are related files not just the apk, like for the VVM i pulled for someone else, they needed the jar and xml files i gave them too. we need someone with a nexus to go a search for mms in root explorer and give us everything.
Has anyone on Nexusmod tried this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574675
Uses CM9 framework... For some reason i cant get the stupid file to work. Keeps reverting back to the stock when i paste it. I fixed my permissions issue.
did you remember to change it to RW from RO in the top of root explorer?

How to Add Apps to a Phone?

Ok not sure if this is the right place or what but im a go ahead anyway, i was looking at some custom roms and i notice that some roms had the DownloadproviderUI.apk i tried pulling it and putting it on my phone but nothing i keep getting error messages that the file cant be something.(sorry)
the apk was running on the Triumph and i have a Triumph but its on a custom rom im running a Stock and it cam from a CM7 so is it possible to port the apk file to Stock and how if anything?
The stock rom should have a apk handler with it also, are you trying to download apps from browser and install them? If so just go to settings. Then application . Click unknown resources hit ok, best to have a file explorer to find downloads and install

No really like that, I know how to do that im talking about if i wanted to take a app from the CM7 roms apk file then add it to my SD card and download it to my phone (i know ill still have to do what you said also) but when i do it says "problem parsing the package" but it comes from a triumph rom so how doo i get this to work on the stock roms?
Hmm, just needing the DownloadproviderUI.apk from cm7? Extract from zip then try pushing it to system/apps and fix permissions, then reboot . Should work

That Would work but how do i get it to stick to a rom? like if i added it to the System/app folder then flashed the rom? I got the ICS Keyboard to work by adding the LIB files within the app its self to the Rom then flashed and that works but this app isn't the same.
What from are you going to flash? If its a cm7, it'll be there won't have to do that. If you want to add your apps before you flash decompile add recompile zip then flash

There are a few things that are different with the APK's
if its just a plain old third party app APK, then putting it on the sd card and locating and installing with a file explorer of some sort should work fine
If its a system related app that must be in the system with permissions then theres 2 ways, sometimes one way doesnt work
a. simply open the rom's zip and add it to the system/app folder(sometimes after doing this you'll still need to navigate to the folder and hit install usually itll install itself)
b. the trickier one if a. doesnt work, have the apk on the sd, using a file explorer that will allow you to change permissions, change the system folder from read only to read/write move or copy the apk from the sd card to the system/apps folder, Install it, then switch the folder back to read only and reboot
also keep in mind that if your trying to bring an app from CM7 to Stock some probly just wont work, CM7 is gingerbread based while stock is froyo, gingerbread changed how things like texts, data, camera, and hdmi are read by the phone and how they function or where the files are so it may just not work

you cant, if it was a System apk then Sometimes, you can put it into the correct folder inside a custom roms Zip and itll install itself
otherwise you need to download some type of file manager so you can navigate thru the folders, then just clicking the apk should pop-up and install menu
