I've not seen anyone here mention this, but it's being discussed on other Android forums. Thought I'd post here on XDA in hopes that some of the more technical members of this forum might have some input or ideas.
I noticed one day recently that the Google Navigation voice was so low I couldn't hear the directions over the sound of my car's A/C, which I know had not been the case before. All volumes were at max. This continued for the rest of the day, and all ringtones and notification sounds were very low. IT was so dramatic, I just assumed the speaker went bad, and I was going to have to make an insurance claim over a defective phone.
I happened to reboot the phone that evening and instantly the speaker volume was 3-4x as loud as earlier that day. I thought it was a one-time thing, but now realize that this happens 3-4 times a week. I'll notice I can't hear any of the notification sounds very well, reboot the phone, and all is well.
Except, this is a pain in the @ss to have to reboot constantly!
Has anyone experienced this? I thought I would recognize a pattern, like some app I use regularly or something, but nothing seems to make sense... seems very arbitrary, but aggravating nonetheless.
As I said, this is being talked about on a lot of the other HOX forums, but I haven't seen it mentioned specifically here. I almost want to say it started after the AT&T update last month, because I never noticed it before that. I'm on stock AT&T HOX, not rooted, and only a handful of the 'regular' popular apps. I don't even have music on the phone, nor have I ever used earbuds with it.
Very frustrating!
I have had the exact same thing happen, no clue why though.
I started a thread awhile back. Mine does the sane as well.. pissed..hope its software issue

Same here, I'm leaning towards it being a software issue due to a reboot always fixing it.
What ROM are you on?Custom or Stock?Any mods done to the phone?I had the same issue with the phone volume being to low on a custom rom, until I went into recovery to wipe cache/dalvick and everything was good/loud again.

I can vouch for this solution. I had the same issues on my HOX when I installed a custom ROM.
In the "Special Notes" section of the CleanROM v4.1 notes, it states:
Volume may be quite. If so wipe cache's and reflash the ROM. Volume should be loud again.

Hopefully it's as simple of a fix as this!!
I'm completely stock, no custom ROMs, not rooted.
I have the same problem, stock and rooted. I recently started noticing it. It didn't always happen to me.
I do use Tasker to put my media volume all the way down once i exit my car. Then I use Elixr 2 to put all my volumes to high once I use my "home" profile. I think it might be cause of that. Since I've stopped using exlir to raise the volume, I haven't noticed the issue. But I have restarted my phone every 2 days recently for another issue so it is possible that I am fixing it each time before the symptoms start to occur

Has anyone found a permanent solution to this? It's my only gripe. I have tried two sense roms. I love HTC camera so I don't want asop. Volume plus doesn't help when volume drops off.

I can't detect any difference and if there is it is too small to detect. I tried to amplify the sound with Volume+ and there is no detectable difference. But if I use the speaker for a call, at maximum volume, it is really really loud so the speaker is definitely capable of more. But with Satnav GPS apps, at default settings, between the One X and my old Galaxy S2, there is a night and day difference
I too had these issues on replacement phone I got from att but it resolved automatically after few days

this problem causes due to an App, in my case previous version of Viber App caused all this issues....

I purchased the HTC Inspire 4G exactly five days ago today primarily because it is hearing aid compatible. I think the phone has fantastic features and I really like it. However, the volumes are the worst I have ever heard on a cell phone. I am hearing deficient and I cannot hear this HTC when it rings. The volumes are turned to their max and still they are very low (both ring and notification). I have downloaded various ringtones and still the volumes are inadequate. I recently discovered that people that call me cannot hear me unless I use a headset for some reason. One would think that a cell phone which is hearing aid compatible would have volumes loud enough for the hearing impaired. I still have seven days to return this phone and I think it has to go unless I can find a solution to both problems. I have seen several places where people have flashed various ROMs to increase the volumes, but I am not interested in such a solution since it will violate the agreement with AT&T. With so many intelligent people/developers on this site, can someone help?
Hey man, I highly recommend rooting and installing a custom ROM. Every one I've tried on this device has louder volume and it's a recognized issue with this phone in it's stock form. ATT always botches the software on HTC phones and the folks here do a good job of cleaning up their mess. AT&T will not know (I've done this with 5 HTC devices now) anything about your rooting shenanigans unless you send it in for warranty replacement and it still turns on. If the screen is broken or the display otherwise does not work then there is no way they can tell using the methods they check with. They just try to turn it on and if the bootup is different than stock that's when they get mad. if you need to return your phone after rooting and flashign for warranty repair, then there are threads here to unroot (just use the stock rom updater; it flashes stock rom and radio and kills root but not s-off, but getting s-on isn't hard either). Go ahead and root/flash per the instructions in the dev section. I recommend twopumpchump's optimized stock ROM for starters. I haven't had an issue with it so far. If and when you need to warranty exchange your device, just PM me and I'll find the proper threads for you.
The volume on the inspire is really low compared to other handsets. At this point, some custom roms do increase the volume but not by very much.
The calling problem is probably a defect with the phone.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the responses. Well, although I did not want to root, it seems like my only option. I thought about returning the phone to AT&T and paying the $35 restocking fee and going to Verizon to buy the Thunderbolt, but after further taught, it doesn’t seem cost effective just for a front facing camera and a kickstand where the low volume might still be an issue. So, I will return the defective phone to AT&T since people can’t hear me on the other end and then root the new phone to increase the volume. Since this will be my first attempt at rooting and flashing a custom ROM, can either of you direct me to a link where I can lean the procession? I want to try twopumpchump's optimized stock ROM as recommended by DeathmonkeyGTX, but first I need to learn how to root and flash. Thanks!

No. It increases the external speaker volume too.
The only walk around I have found for notification loudness without flashing another rom has been to use a louder sound. Either made myself or found one. With the rom I am using I have to turn the volume down on notifications!

I can confirm. I found the volume to be very low coming from an iPhone 4. I downloaded the "8-Bit" sound pack from HTC Hub and found that most of these were significantly louder than the other options. I set a few for my notifications and can hear the phone now when getting texts and emails.

Hope this helps others!

If you flash CoreDroid 5.1 you will be turning down the volume on your notifications and alarms, at least I did. Even speakerphone is louder. Revolution is another that I found works exceptionall well. I think Coredroid is a little louder and clearer.
Driving me insane. Doesn't matter what ROM I'm running, it does it 90% of the time for incomming and outgoing calls.
Anyone have any ideas?
Mine randomly does this as well. It's a rather unpleasant experience to have the speakerphone on @ your ear when someone responds to your answering the phone.
I've had mine turn on in the middle of a call once or twice. I thought I had somehow hit something not knowing it.
Had that problem. Believe it has something to do with the "car dock" mode. somehow it gets turned on or something. Don't really remember what I did other then try resetting it, pulling battery, or just smacking the crap out of it onto a table or something. I'm serious, not hard enough to break it but enough to fix it hehe. I'm actually pretty sure that's what I did lol.

Same issue here. Running stock non-rooted GB. Also on wife's LG Phoenix. Could be something sent down from ATT?
Try going to settings - dock - remove check from Auto-launch. I'm wondering if it thinks for some reason it's docked and therefore defaulting to Speaker
Just found out that GoSMS was the problem. Updated on both phones and the problem is gone. They actually admitted to it with the update description.
I have the same issue. Went as far as flashing back to stock unrooted. Still occurred. I believe its a hardware problem with the usb on the phone. Something about the contacts crossing.

If you read the thread you would have seen that the two causes of the problem were dock mode and also go sms. Not to mention this was dug up from 3months ago
Thanks for your reply.
Guess I should have mentioned dock mode does not seem to be whats causing it on mine.

Okey I am having this problem on every rom whether its ics or gb.
The culprit is carhome app.I have be after this problem since I got my inspire. It gave me whole lot of trouble. Latest one is force auto-rotate screen.
Another thing is u need original inspire charger and usb. If u have anyone thing which is not original. Carhome app will cause problems. Unfortunately my inspire charger and USB r broken.
The only solution is to open the rom zip delete carhome.apk and carhomeluncher.
How I come to conclusion.
I charged my phone then flashed aospx rom everything was fine no auto speaker, no forced auto rotation but as soon as I connected my USB carhome app pops up and
All these problem started to happen again.

Hi, I have the same problem with the New Att stock sense 3.0 (3.20.502.52) rooted ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1810461
The Car Panel app was launching randomly, so I first froze it using root uninstaller, no more car panel launching, but my screen started randomly turning on while in sleep, so I completely uninstalled Car Panel, my screen still goes on sometimes, and it did not solve the speaker always on problem.
Cheers.

Once carhome starts there is no way to solve the problem.even after removing it problem remains.
Best solution is delete it from the zip before installing

I have found my screen won't stay off when I hold it up to my ear. Light sensor is very sensitive or my ear is shaped weird... Probably the later. I then think 'fat facing' because of this has attributed to random hangups and speaker phone engagements.

Hi,
I've had my shift for about a year now, and it has treated me wonderfully so far. The fact that the phone has so much more power under the hood than many realize is amazing, but there seems to be an issue I've been having for about 2 weeks now is bringing me here looking for advice.
My Shifts regular phone headset seems to have died. Whenever I place a call, or try to listen to (e.g. vm) anything via the headset I can't hear anything. When I play anything through the speaker though (music, calls ON speaker) it works fine. At first I thought it was the ROM I was using so I did a complete wipe and flashed a fresh one (even tried a stock rooted) but nothing would work. I do have the insurance for it, but my dilemma is that I think having a stable root and being completely set in that manner is more important to me than having a working headset on a non-rooted 2.3 phone.
Any suggestions on what I should do to possibly fix the phone? And ideas as to whether or not I would be able to root a replacement phone as I've rooted this one and not have any issues (temp root only, etc etc)? I'm stuck because not many understand why I wouldn't want to get a new phone except me.. lol.
Thank you in advance

Hey all,
I came from the Lumia (yeah, what a nightmare that was) to the HTC One X. It was definitely great to come back to Android. But, I've had the phone for 2 days now and already noticed two problems.
When I was at work yesterday, I noticed the 4g icon at the top looked like it was only sending data, but would never receive it. After about 30-45 seconds it would come back, but during that time, I couldn't do anything on the phone that required the use of data. I tried a factory reset, and it seemed to work just fine. Then on the way home from work, it did the same thing again.
Also, when my wife and I were watching TV last night I got a phone call and could barely hear the phone ring. I checked the volume and it's all the way up on all three sliders in the settings. I tried changing ringtones, and that didn't help.
So, I'm on my 5th phone now with AT&T since April 21st. 4 Lumia's and now this One X and they've all had issues. I'm really at my boiling point now.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I know one of my options is just to take the phone back to the store and swap it for a replacement, but I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing these two issues with their One X? I've Googled it, and there are quite a few threads about each issue, but here on XDA I don't see too many. I trust this forum more than any other.
I really wanted to love this phone too!

What's odd is that all day yesterday it seemed fine. It seems time was just the key here. We'll see how this goes.
You can make your own ringtone with any MP3 and any software for sound editing (like SounForge). You can cut some part of the song and make it louder (I advice you to make a preset for equalizer with 120-140% louder and no 60Hz frequency)
P.S. Sorry for my bad English.
I have been having the same issues with the volume with my one x. I emailed HTC about the problem then it auto corrected itself. It all started after this at&t 1.85 update. I haven't factory reset yet, which is what HTC recommended, I hope that enough people complain so HTC actually does something about it. I love the phone though.

Hi!
Let's get straight to the point.
I just got a Skyrocket (Canadian Version) last week on Craigslist and I am having a blast with it-- wonderful phone. There is only one problem, though... my in-call audio would not work. When I put a call on speakers, I can hear the other side, but when I am using the actual call speakers located at the top of the front screen, I cannot hear anything. If I reboot the phone, it will work for about say 4 times... and then it will be borked again. Also, I noticed one time that when the background of the other phone is loud, that is when the problem would arise.
Should I go back to complete stock and see if that fixes it? Or is it a hardware issue?
Do a complete odin wipe back to stock, and use it for a couple days. If that doesnt work i suspect the seller knew of the issue, and sold u a borked phone.
I've experienced the exact issue as well. I upgraded a few weeks ago and on day 3 of having the phone, bam, in mid call the default call audio speaker went out. I was on Sky-ICS at the time. I flashed different radios despite knowing that couldn't have been it, went all the way back to stock and nothing worked.
I concluded that it was a hardware issue, or a software issue that was beyond anything a flash, battery pull, or tweak could fix. For whatever reason, the call audio muted the default speaker, yet rerouted to the loud speaker with no problem. So I took it back to the store, explained it to the sales rep and got a new Skyrocket.
