I purchaed an SGH-I727 on craigslist in June. (in contract and waiting for SGS3 meanwhile - contract up in Sept.) Phone came installed with ICS 4.0.3. Baseband Version I727UCALC4. The phone has been flawless and moving from BB to Android is the best move I've EVER made.
Rooted the phone using CWM. 5.0.2.6. Superuser 3.0.7. Titanium Backup Pro to save it all. No other ROM's or kernels installed. Aside from the rooting, the phone is stock.
I have had a few hiccups with the phone, especially where SMS is concerned. When deleting a thread the phone will go dark, including the soft keys at the bottom (except for the top info bar- 4G, Batt%, time) and return to the home page with the message "Unfortunately, Messaging has stopped." Hit "OK" and the phone is back on the home page. SMS thread is deleted and the phone is fine again.
I got the notice that there was an update for the SGS2 Skyrocket via Kies on Samsung's website. Downloaded Kies ver 2.3.2.12064_9_7. Installed and rebooted windows 7.
Connected the phone, and went to update it and got the following message---
YOUR DEVICE DOES NOT SUPPORT SOFTWARE UPGRADING VIA KIES
CURRENT FIRMWARE VERSION: PDA:LC4 / PHONE:LC4 / CSC:LC4 (ATT)
I tried another method via XDA video thread whereby you put the phone into download mode and do the following: tools> Firmware Upgrade and Initialization.
I get the window to input the SN and the model #, but Kies doesn't recognize the model # and kicks me out only to want to start over.
The official Samsung Site states the following:
1.From any home screen touch Menu > Settings > About Phone.
2.Scroll to the bottom and look for Baseband Version. It should be I727UCKK1, I727UCKJ2 or I727UCLA3 before updating. It will be I727UCLF6 after the update.
My phone is already at I727UCALC4, and I'm guessing since it's not one of the afore mentioned Baseband Versions, it's a NO GO!
I wanted to update the phone to I727UCLF6 and start over hoping it would fix my SMS issue and not give me any additional problems after a new rooting.
Any suggestions?

If you purchase the phone a month ago and it has ICS that means your running a custom rom or leaked ics. Just as stated before, either odin to stock to just flash a ics rom of your choice.

Yes, consider yourself lucky you didn't upgrade to the official ICS. It's beyond crap. I went from stock 2.3.6 to stock ICS... Wow, really, really bad. Went from a pretty darn good phone to something verging on unusable. Worse, apparently there is no road back to stock 2.3.6 Problems? Bluetooth sucks, caller ID sucks, contacts sucks... etc, etc... Stay well clear of stock ICS.

Sure there is a way back!
Flash the stock tar file from odin.. or if you have a custom recovery installed... flash the stock rom that way.
Where did you get "no way back".. seriously i want to know.

This is total opposite from my experience. Never had a problem with bluetooth on any rom. I connect to 3 devices on a regular basis with zero hassle. Caller ID and contacts work the same. Not sure how Caller ID can suck as it always works and really doesn't have much to do with the rom.
There's an easy way to go back to 2.3.5 or 2.3.6 through Odin or CWM. Just download it right here. Yes, you can get back to untouched stock 2.3.6.

I think you are spreading some misleading info against ICS without doing adequate searches or troubleshooting. It almost sounds like your phone is malfunctioning, or your ICS upgrade did not take cleanly.

Just follow these steps. I know it works because it is what I did:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749021
The Model number is SGH-i727
Serial number, look at the one posted behind your battery, not the one on the box.
Even though not stated, if you do these steps with some leaks like UCLF5, it does not wipe your device when you get upgraded to UCLF6.
Hi guys, and thanks for pointing me towards a 2.3.6 path!!!! I've been searching and the only information I could find until this is that 2.3.5 was available, but not .6. On other "official ICS" complaint threads, people are specifically saying that there is no path back to 2.3.6 except through custom roms.
I have no experience with the custom ICS roms on this phone, so I'm not saying anything against them at all. However, there are a lot of people VERY unhappy with the official Rom, so I don't think it's me. Problems? BT drops all the time. The phone drops calls all the time. The task bar dimmer is inop. Caller ID does not work if you're in the AT&T contact app. If a call comes through while you're in it, it is impossible to see who's calling except by answering the phone. (It won't let you leave the app while an incoming call is ringing.) Lots of apps work for sh*&% with it. etc, etc. To be honest, I was completely happy with 2.3.6 except for the occasional--once every few days or so--BT drop. I figured they'd fix that in the official ICS upgrade, so I upgraded immediately. Big mistake. I know there are probably some great custom roms out there, but 2.3.6 worked so well for me--and stability is my primary concern--that I really just want to go back to 2.3.6 and stay there. I've done the custom rom thing with my old WM phones, but seriously, stock 2.3.6 is close to perfect for me.
Thanks again!!!

Can we flash it back to stock ROM though? I remember there was talk here about the stock ROM and how we can't flash it back to stock or something, but that was a couple months ago... and I've started to lose track of things here.

i believe it was infact the kernel that caused the issues, did you build the kernel from bell sources?
DG pulled perception 9 which was not even i9000m based but i think the kernel he built was. perception 9 was rereleased as 9.5 with a different kernel. there were users on that thread reporting sd card problems but very few, still risky. that said the telus rom didnt cause any problems and neither did the i9000 international so i think the captivate is safe. as the software is ready you guys might even beat att to the punch this time! if you get hsupa enabled this time ill definitely flash a rogers rom.

I was able to get mine to stock Rogers ROM but I dont know if its able to get EXACTLY like how rogers has. Mine looks like the rogers one but I think it was made off the AT&T one because it has their logo on the bootup and its not JF6 (mine says JI2 unless thats how it is on a stock Rogers I didnt check before I did flashing), I was able to get rid of the AT&T logo but that still bugs me unless someone can confirm this for me.
Yeah. You can get the Rogers stock files somewhere on the forums and just flash it all using Heimdall. Thats what I did after Odin bricked my phone twice ;D. Also, no Froyo yet. Don't expect it any time soon - this IS Rogers we're dealing with.

It isn't Kies that was the issue. This was happening to people well before the 2.2 update and at random times. My girlfriend's Vibrant has gone twice now. Once just randomly force closing everything and then dying while on 2.1, the second one which came from Samsung with 2.2 on it also did the same thing. She is now waiting for phone #3. Hardware has to be a factor.

Really? That's weird, I've got the latest Kies but "Update Firmware" is still grayed out.
I was using a custom ROM. In order to upgrade the rom, I used one click odin to restore stock. Then I did a master clear and checked the version of the kernel SW:
Firmware 2.1 -update1
Baseband I897UCJF6
Kernel 2.6.29 [email protected] #2
Build ECLAIR
This was all expected. Then I checked software update. To my suprise, it said there is a software update. I decided to get the update. It downloaded it, and in the process of installation, it failed exactly at 50% mark. I tried it several time, all with the same result.
Now, the question is what is this update? and why is it failing?
Can someone check their never altered stock captivate if the SW/firmvare/kernel version I listed above match with your captivate.
Thanks
It's been said that once you flash using Odin, even though its Samsung stock, that it will not, or not likely to, update properly.

Or using custom roms is a one way street, that we will never be able to go to full stock with succesful updates from ATT?

Just use Kies Mini...
Kies-Mini
Download Kies-Mini
Install it on your computer
Start Kies-Mini
Make sure your phone is set for USB-Debugging
Hook USB cable to phone
Hook other end to your computer
Kies should see your phone
If Kies can see your phone, UPDATE it to JH7
After Kies is finished updating your phone will be @ True Stock
If that dosen't work get OTA JH7

It's jh7, I don't think 2.2 will be out soon. I was at at&t device support center today. I talked to one of the reps about most problematic phone they have met and we talked about captivate a little bit. He said google released it really early and samsung finished their revise really quick, its just att can't take such a huge amount of data transfer at one time. And att is building up 4g network, less attention will be put on 3g than before.

You should just stick with custom rom's. The updates you are trying to get are already on 90% of the custom roms and the custom roms have alot more advantages with barley any disadvantages.

So then what is differenct between: SGH-I897ZKMATT,SGH-I897ZKZATT and SGH-I897ZKAATT?
I just got my Skyrocket and tried to get the update to 2.3.6. However, my phone says that I have the latest version of Android. Did AT&T stop the OTA updates?
Also, I read somewhere on this forum that you can't do the One-click or easy root if you're on 2.3.6.
I'm very new to all of this. So the questions are: do I want/need the 2.3.6 update and should I apply this update?

Only update you need is ICS and I believe Att&t pulled the 2.3.6 update...
Thanks. My next decision to make is how to root this baby and whether or not I should go with one of the custom ROMs.
What's the easiest way to root the Skyrocket? Can it be unrooted in case I want to return or exchange it? What's the slickest ROM to use right now (I recently read about Mervin's)? What do I need to do in order to ensure I can go back to stock 2.3.5 when I want to?
Sorry for all the questions. I've been reading a lot, but much of it is over my head. The only thing I've rooted before is my nook, and I downloaded a custom ROM with STEP-BY-STEP instructions that a child could follow. It worked great, but I have very little understanding about what I actually did.
My skyrocket updated to 2.3.6, and I have tried a couple of the one click root methods, and they dont seem to be working for me. I don't know if thats just me, my specific phone, or the fact that it upgraded to 2.3.6. I don't see any difference between 2.3.5 and 2.3.6, so I might avoid it for the moment and use the one click root methods. Those will let you unroot too if you want to upgrade to ICS or such when they become available.
On that note, anyone know how to root 2.3.6?

Yeah, I'm aware of the Odin method. But its def not as user friendly. Seeing as I don't know alot about how it works, and since no one seems to agree about if it triggers the ROM counter, I was hoping there was a simpler way. Dumb 2.3.6
If you're on 2.3.5, you can easily root with Shortfuse SuperOneClick 2.2 package... Then try to do the OTA 2.3.6. That's what I did and I didn't lose root after the 2.3.6 OTA. You need to be on stock 3e recovery (I was). I read a few folks couldn't take the 2.3.6 OTA when they had CWM Recovery.

Did anyone ever figure out EXACTLY what 2.3.6 changed?
My first SR I updated to 2.3.6 but it developed a sleep death problem so I exchanged it.
My replacement is 2.3.5 and software update says it's current.
So the 2.3.6 update option is gone for me too.

My original also locked up, crashed, rebooted a couple times for no apparent reason either. So something was wrong with it, no doubt.
My replacement hasn't done any of that stuff...... yet.
So far so good. Knock on wood, crossing fingers, etc etc...

To answer your question, for me the 2.3.6 GPS performance is much improved from 2.3.5 (and I thought 2.3.5 was already good!). After upgrading to 2.3.6, my I727-SR started recognizing(In View) 23 satellites and locking 13, with accuracy to 9ft, within 4 seconds... crazy fast and accurate.
No 2.3.6 OTA for me either, newly acquired SR on Dec 6, 2011.
Does anyone know why the OTA update was pulled? Or how to get an answer to this?
I'm running Alien 4 based on KK1 2.3.6 and it is running great aside from some issues with Bluetooth in my car. Call quality is improved and data speeds are much faster.
2.3.6 was buggy.
I use my SGSII for support for my company. We have an Exchange server for Email (Outlook) and use Outlook 365 profiles now. By policy, for security reasons, only administrators have web access, we can access Email through our secure devices - meaning corporate laptops and our cell phones (which are secured via Exchange policies).
The 2.3.6 update broke the Exchange Email support entirely, if you are an Outlook 365 user at minimum.
This is all devices running 2.3.6.
My skyrocket updated to 2.3.6, and I haven't had any issues (there is a funny bug in auto brightness at 10% battery, but thats all I've noticed). It has always seemed stable to me. Some people have speculated that the update was for specific phones (with certain IMEI codes) instead of pulling the update for issues.

I am getting i9023 nexus S tomorrow. I want to know 2 things,
1. Is ICS OTA available now or is it still "halted" by google?
2. If it is still not available I would like to have official 2.3.6 atleast. Is it complicated to manually upgrade to 2.3.6? Can you explain me a bit?
And secondly will I still get official OTA for ICS if I manually upgrade to 2.3.6?? A friend recently got the same phone and it had 2.3.3 out of the box so I am thinking mine will be same as well.
Btw I know you can manually have official ICS as well but I'll like to wait for it till google resumes the updates.
first , i don't know
second , yes , no compilcation , just in "about phone" there is "updated" , all automatic.
Option 3) root your phone and put whatever in the hell rom you want. Change daily....

This is my first android phone, I will eventually root and all that tinkering but initially I want to have a simple experience.
option 3 the best one. at the time you finally root your phone you will regret not have done it before
1. ICS OTA is available. I don't think Google ever officially halted it and I think the news just said it was in a few specific areas temporarily. I got my ICS update about 2 days after the news said it was halted. I have a Nexus S i9020 though. I don't know if ICS is available to all Nexus S versions yet.
2. It is pretty simple to upgrade to 2.3.6 manually. What you do is you have to find the URL of the official update that Google pushes out. Then you download it into your phone, reset it holding some buttons, choose the file and click ok. More detailed instructions are here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1280785
This link gives you instructions to go from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6. DO NOT use that file if you are on 2.3.3. You will need the 2.3.3 to 2.3.6 file. The instructions will be the same though.
Here is a compilation of all of the i9023 official updates. 2.3.3 to 2.3.6 is in there as well as 2.3.3 to 4.0.3.

Thank you the first link shows how to flash which seems quite simple and the second thread has all the download files.
Btw can you tell me something about regional updates. Are they dependent on what country I am "in" or which country the phone was purchased from?
And can any i9023 owner comment on the status of ICS OTA?
Updates are based on the country the phone was purchased from.
Flashing official ROM doesnt void warranty right?
And how exactly does the phone "know" which country it belongs to? I mean arent nexus ROMS all global?
it looks the combination of SIM card and IP address (if available)
mainly the SIM card, it's how it chooses the phone language at first boot
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Flashing the official ROM won't void warranty since it can be flashed via the stock bootloader. It is officially available for the i9023. Feel free to download the update from your ROM to 2.3.6, then 2.3.6 to ICS. If you experience issues in ICS, i'd recommend doing a data/factory reset and, if needed, flashing the OTA again. Just be sure to backup as much as possible (can't backup app data/settings/saves without root, sadly).
Also, you won't be able to downgrade back to 2.3.x after you've flashed ICS without rooting too.
First thing root your phone, and after make a passion about this, search in forum, read, and install what you like, what you think is great for you, be prepared, you have a lot of work afther rooting, belive me.
Good luck.
Just flash stock ics full rom.
If you are concerned with warranty, just flash the stock 4.0.3 from google. However if you want improve battery life, you can flash the leaked 4.0.4, though rooting is required, and may void your warranty.
Hi, I have a Nexus S I9023 too and i just bought it 2 weeks ago... also i am from india but that doesn't matter... now for your questions...
1. ICS is available officially from Google, it's just that some users were experiencing problems so yes they halted the OTA but still it is available through the manual update.. and for your info... Manual update is exactly just the same (100%) as an OTA. Google themselves say that...
2.I myself had 2.3.3 installed from factory and could not get the OTA update... but then i could do it to 2.3.6 with the help of this thread..
Go to this link... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445635
and go to Full Roms and choose the 2.3.6 rom and flash it.. throught the instructions ton that thread..and to tell you again it is another official way to update and google also supports it...
and you will get the ICS OTA even after manually updating... it's just a normal update.. and for your info.. first i was also scared about updating but i just did it and it worked and for ICS i have ICS on my phone right now and i did it the same way as 2.3.6 just download the 4.0 file and do it the same way...
and for your info i am not getting any problems it is PERFECT THE BATTERY IS EVEN BETTER THAN GINGERBREAD.. AND FOR RECHECK I DID THE SAME ON MY UNCLE'S PHONE AND IT WORKED AWESOMEEE!!
AND IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY PROBLEMS JUST PM ME..
HOPE I HELPED..
EDIT: NEXUS S UPDATES AREN'T REGIONAL IT'S JUST DEPENDANT ON THE MODEL.. also the warranty is perfectly safe...
I agree with option 3. But you will have read and test a lot (this is why we don't have iPhones!! ).
Once you root and flash...you will notice you won't stop doing it!! We have the best damn developers!!

@SAXXENA...................Ohhh Dude " FOR YOUR INFO" unlimited times.
He knows that what u said in total was actually for his Info only.
LOL.
Thanks everyone just got my nexus. It's 2.3.3 and really happy with the out of box experience, super smooth.
As expected no OTA, now I am confused if I should update to 2.3.6 or 4.0.3.
I guess since this is my first android phone it seems appropriate I use GB for a while and perhaps get ICS when google resumes the OTA.
I updated to 2.3.6, quite a quick and painless procedure.
Can someone tell me if I can delete the zip file from the sd card now??
Yes you can.
The ICS update isn't installing on my Atrix 2. The download process will finish and the installation will start, but it stops just a little into it and the phone will restart saying that the software update failed. I purchased the phone used and it was already rooted when I bought it. Will that keep the update from installing? How can I unroot or flash back? I'm new to all this, so I'm not entirely sure what to do and I don't want to try anything without knowing anything for sure. I don't want to mess up my phone. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Ok, I'm assuming you bought it used? And if so, why firmware are you on?

Have the same problem. Have rooted Atrix 2 on 2.3.6, official update is downloaded, but after "install" it just boots back to 2.3.6, and in About device section it says "Update failed."
General question now, how to officially update rooted phone?
Well all of you have modified or removed some of the stock system apps.of you are rooted go into cache/recovery and see the last_log it will give you the reason why the update is failing.
If you are not rooted just fxz back to stock and then try.

Well first of all you need to be rooted to see the cache folder.if you are rooted download root explorer or es file explorer.using that you can go into cache folder and see the last_log
Anyways if you wanna return to stock use the procedure from here and you'll be good to go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29560267
And yes if you fxz back to 2.3.5 you can OTA to 2.3.6 and then to ICS but in the link above now you can directly goto 2.3.6 just read the post and follow the instructions carefully
