Hey everyone! I have a rather weird situation here. For the past couple months I had been running the SkyICS rom and it had been working great. Then I found out that the official ICS update was being released and so I wanted to switch over to it. I went through the process of using Odin to flash the 2.3.5 rom back onto it and it worked out great, but then when I loaded up Kies it says "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies" when the update is only to be done via Kies. I figured maybe I could reflash the rom through Odin and try again just in case, but when I try to put in Odin mode, it goes to stock Android recovery. WHAT HAPPENED TO DOWNLOAD MODE?! Obviously I can't use Odin to fix that. If anyone could lend a hand here that would be awesome. I have already tried pulling out the battery and restarting it that way, but to no avail. It is the i727 from AT&T. If you need more info I would gladly oblige you.
Thanks in advance!!!
P.S. I have attached a picture to show that it is going to stock recovery instead of download mode. Everything else seems to work alright besides that previously mentioned.
How are you trying to get into download mode? Holding volume up and down then plugging in the USB cable?

To get to download mode I leave the device unplugged, power it off, and then hold power+volume up+volume down until the first time it says Samsung. Then I would plug it in once it brings up download mode.
Turn it off then try holding volume up and down then plug it in without pressing power button.

For me whenever the phone is plugged to the computer vol up+down gets to download mode, when its not it goes to recovery.

This is why it was going to recovery. Vol up + volume down + power will always go to recovery. To go to download mode you leave the power button out of it.

Same trouble... I am not able to enter download mode now with skyrocket and ics 4.04.
I am trying the steps:
1) Phone off.
2) Press up and down <NO PRESSING POWER>. Nothing happened. I have waited like a min and nothing. Now, silly question, does the cellphone needs to be turned on? If that's the case, if the cell phone is ON, when I press the combination of volume up and down, the next screen ends on recovery :S.
Someone can advice?
Thank you!

You're supposed to plug it in while holding down the volume buttons down.

You gotta plug that phone into the usb first and make sure the drivers are installed, then you repeat what you've been doing. Make sure use the cable that came with the device. Hope this helps.
read the return to stock link in my sig, theres a section on getting into dl mode, and a troubleeshooting section for getting into dl/odin mode

You'll need to install the Android SDK, and modify environment variables to make it easy to use ADB and fast boot commands. If that all sounds like a bit much, which it should unless you're going to do development or your buttons are borked, just stick with the previous methods. I've always done the following: Power off phone, plug it into computer, press and hold power button+VolUP+VolDown until it vibrates, release power button while continuing to hold VolUP+VolDown. Should get you into the bootloader where you can use the volume buttons to select an option and the power button to execute.
(I cannot be held responsible if the aforementioned damages your device; do the research and own the process.)
I'm always glad to help..but elaborate what ?
You just need to download a simple folder containing the adb command (5 small files) and put it like in root of c:
Install the skyrocket USB driver on your computer
Enable USB debugging mode in phone
Now connect the skyrocket to computer
Don't activate USB storage
Open command prompt by going to start menu then run command and type "cmd"
In command prompt do "cd" at the location of where you put the adb folder....so like :
C:/cd adb
C:/adb/adb reboot download
That's all
PS: you can also do"adb reboot recovery" to reboot to recovery..
This will save your buttons big time from the funky way of pressing volume up and down simultaneously...I never rebooted into recovery or download using the phone keys...even in Android I use app called"quick boot" needs root but I can reboot into anything by touching that option...

okay so i've seen where you use the volume up + down + power to go into downloading mode but how do i get to the little digger guy with the shovel? because using odin i dont know if i need to be on the screen with the shovel guy or on the screen where i have the option to reinstall packages, reboot the phone can someone help me?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
reading the stickies is a good place to start
but i've followed that thread step by step and i cannot for the life of me get odin to work
every time i do the volume up+down+power it goes into system recovery mode
If your phone functions you can use adb to get in there too. From your SDK tools folder just type "adb reboot download" and it'll send you directly to download mode
its not the recovery mode i have the problem getting to but when i do get there odin wont recigonize my phone and i need to reset to the stock rom which is why i have a feeling i need to get to the android guy with the shovel

Follow these steps exactly:
Close odin (if it's open)
Unplug phone from USB
Remove SIM/SD card
Remove Battery
Open Odin
Put battery back in
Plug in USB
Hold both volume keys THEN hold power
Continue holding all 3 keys, the screen will come on, DO NOT LET GO
The screen will go black, then turn on again- as soon as it turns off for the second time let go of the power button but continue holding the volume keys.
In a couple seconds you should get the download screen

I understand the frustration, there are a lot of stickies currently and numerous pages to browse to find information on entering download mode.
Try this:
1.) Remove the Battery, SIM card and micro SD Card.
2.) Reinstall the Battery. (DO NOT TURN ON THE DEVICE)
3.) Hold ONLY the volume buttons down and then insert the USB cable.
This should bring you into download mode (The android guy/shovel and will say "downloading....")
You do not need to press the power button at all for this method. Also, be sure to have installed the drivers for the device.

ONLY hold in the Vol-Up/Vol-Down buttons while plugging in the USB cable.
DO NOT press the power button.

I had been running cognition 2.2 beta1, put phone into download mode using vol up vol down and put in usb cord and flashed back to stock. Then I flashed Shep211's JPM\JI6 ROM via rom manager. Reflashed a JI6 kernel, then tried to use rom manager to flash to cognition 2.2 beta7. The update failed and now I only get the phone exclamation computer screen and I cannot get my phone back into download mode! I have tried almost every combination of vol up vol down power and usb I can think of to no avail. Can anyone at XDA help before I return the phone to ATT?
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Pull battery. Just keep trying to get into dl mode. That's all I think you can do.

can you be more specific? I can't get adb to recognize this phone in its current state.
1- Pull battery and USB cable out..
2- Press Vol Up while you connect your phone to the USB
3- Insert battery, and keep pressing Vol Up!!!
or
1- Pull battery and USB cable out..
2- Press Vol Down while you connect your phone to the USB
3- Insert battery, and keep pressing Vol Down!!!
or
1- Pull battery and USB cable out..
2- Press Vol Up while you connect your phone to the USB
3- Insert battery and, keep presing Vol Up, press the Power button..
Keep pressing Vol keys means that you must keep pressing the buttons until you get the Download Mode Screen.. And keep trying.. Sometimes it take some time to work..
What I did was download and install the SDK in the C:\Android directory
Then open a windows command prompt and navigate to the "Tools" directory
Then just run the adb command.
Not sure what to tell you if the phone isn't recognized, I'm pretty new at this myself. I'd start hitting Google.
Good luck.

If you were going to Cog 2.2.7, why wouldn't you just have wiped, flashed to stock, rooted and then flashed with Clockwork Recovery?
Anyway, good luck.
-Did you try to start pressing the Vol button AFTER you plug the USB cable? And before you plug it?
-Did you try another USB port or another PC?
Here is the Fix
I was in this same situation last week. Here is how to get it back into download mode.
•Be sure the Samsung USB drivers for the phone are installed on your computer.
•Remove and replace the battery.
•Connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable. The "phone-exclamation mark-computer" picture should display on the phone's screen.
•Hold the Volume Up+Volume Down+Power buttons down simultaneously. The screen should go blank, then the picture should appear again. When the screen goes blank a second time, release the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume Up+Volume Down buttons down

This is the only method that consistently works for me. I use the exact same method. The key is whatever picture (att, battery charge, etc....) comes up the second time and then goes blank, then release the power button.

OK, so i went and flashed an old backup. Now i can't enter recovery or download mode at all. Can someone help me out? My phone doesn't go passed the SGS4G boot screen. It just stays there. Left it on for three hours and nothing. The only PC i have access to does not have internet. I am typing this on my backup Nokia X2.
Your going to need to download Odin 1.85 and then download any 2.3 and above up to 2.3.6 firmware. I highly recommend also downloading Dr honks kj 1 kernel for it comes with voodoo lag fix and clock work mod recovery.but u must read alot to find what you need because u could possibly ruin your phone permanently!!! Good luck and like I said you must read... it will be your best bet towards reviving your phone and keeping it operational.
I know that and all but no matter what i do. I cannot enter download mode at all. I can't even enter recovery. The only buttons i can press are the only 3 hardware keys. My soft-keys don't work.
When u can use your computer again.set up Odin then plug your USB cable in then before you connect your phone make sure you take the battery out leave the backing off your phone.then plug your USB to your phone be sure to hold vol. Up and down simultaneously then keep volume up down held down and put your battery in, that should put your phone in download option it should also warn you that placing a custom rom or firmware could pose a problem to your phone then I believe the option to put your phone in download mode is volume up once u push up with the volume key you should immediately be put in Andy's download mode.that's really the other alternative that has worked for me always. I certainly hope u get your phone running again bro otherwise you may have to send your phone to warranty replacement that's if its still valid 4 u or if u pay for insurance on your phone, I saw your posts and know your familiar with several how to's and such so like u said good luck to you homez.

Your other option is to download the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) & install it. It contains 'adb' which will allow you to reboot the phone into download or recovery mode.
Go to http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html, download and install the SDK. You only need to install the Tools part, not all of the other parts.
Once done, open a command prompt, cd to the platform-tools directory where the SDK installed, and issue the command:
adb reboot download
That should get you there.

If you can boot to download mode, you can get to recovery mode. Here's how. I figured this out when my power button broke and I removed the power switch from the phone's motherboard, so it should work for you:
1. Take the battery out of the phone and unplug it from USB power.
2. Plug in USB power.
3. While holding down the volume-down button and the Home button, insert the battery (this is a little tricky).
4. The phone should start and warn you that you are entering Download mode.
5. Press Volume Down to reboot and then *immediately* push and hold Volume Up and Home simultaneously. The phone should reboot into recovery. Mine does.

Yes - thank you very much! FYI - when I read @Jacquestrapp 's instructions, I suspected the battery gymnastics wouldn't be needed since I had already learned (in this informative video) that I could boot the phone from a powered-off state WITH THE BATTERY INSTALLED by plugging in USB power and immediately depressing home and vol-down. This gets you to step #4 above, and proceed from there.
So this is cool! My trusty-old d2vzw's power button had stuck in the "On" position last September as they apparently tend to do, so I set it aside as a brick and bought a used HTC One m7. Needing a WiFi skype device for a friend, I searched and read about scraping off the S3's power button and operating without one. Now, I see how much I missed the S3's AMOLED display colors and contrast compared to the 1080p display on the m7, and I'm reluctant to part with the S3 .
Help - when pressing volume down it does not reboot.
I9300. could there be a difference in different regions?
edit: volume down switch (not the plastic bit, the hardware connectors) was a bit flimsy so I had it replaced. Still not working though.
I read the instructions wrong. I was using a USB jig to directly boot into download mode. But I need to get to the prompt before it. However, when following the steps the phone just begins charging instead.

Mine does.

Boot the phone, when it gets to the unlock screen try connecting it to PC and open an adb terminal then type:
adb devices(press enter, if it returns a serial number your device is recognized)
Then type:
adb reboot recovery
Or
adb reboot bootloader
Try unlocking it and typing the reboot commands while it is frozen.
Or you can order a USB jig for $5 US or less from eBay.
Or you can use an old USB cord and a 300k resistor(or any combination of resistors equaling no more and no less than 300k) to make your own jig, there are videos on YouTube for making your own jig.

If no power button and in recovery, it's a touch recovery so there's your answer

I don't know if you are been cheeky or not, but I will go check if I can actually touch the option. Lol.
In case I can't what ROM can I install via Odin that will give me touch recovery. Or what other options do I have?
I really don't want to take it apart again to remove the plastic button so I can short the power leads with a wire to mimic a power button press.

No I wasn't being a jerk just being honest. Twrp is touch along with cwm, I don't think any rom includes a recovery as far as I know

I have a nexus 5 as well. Believe it or not the back panel isn't that hard to remove. I have to replace my charging port on my N5 also, I borked the rom I was trying to run on it and it doesn't get past the boot screen

How can I get my Galaxy Note 20 Ultra out of stuck at 'entering fastboot mode'?
Hold down power and volume down until it reboots back to recovery. I got stuck there last week and that's what worked for me.

Is this problem solved? I cannot boot into bootloader mode, thanks!
Switch off the device. Then hold volume up and down buttons and insert the USB cable plugged to PC. You will get to download/odin mode

Download mode is different from fatboot mode, I can enter, and works ok download mode. However, fastboot does not, it gets stuck in entering fastboot mode and no fastboot command works
I got same issue here, I've tried rooting via TWRP and after data wipe and "reboot to recovery" it got stuck in same thing and doesn't move at all, if I hold power and vol down it just boots the device which i dont want since i need to flash magisk as a last step. if anyone encountered this or knows how to fix it i'd be helpful
I'm not rooted but I've had past Samsung devices that I was able to root and if I'm not mistaken Samsung phones aren't able to boot into fastboot mode because Samsung removed the ability to. You can run commands via ADB mode but I think that's about it

Thanks Man. This worked.
Since we can"t enter into fastboot mode is it possible to flash boot.img with adb commands?
I m having the same problem with a21s(a217f). I can t enter download mode using key combinations and the other way launching it from recovery doesn t work, it stays stuck at,, entering fastboot mode,,
The ROM is already bricked, it says in recovery when i try to factory reset the following error:,, can t mount. /system (structure needs cleaning)
Even with,, apply up. with adb,, doesn t work, it just doesn t get detected on my computer when i checked with adb tools.
! The only thing that works is that I can access my sd card and apply a update from sd card but I don t know where to get the update file. (I ll edit if it works to flash stock rom from,, apply update from sd card,, )
Anybody got some ideas or should i burn my motherboard and replace it?
sorry for bad english
Honestly plug device into PC.
Power off device
hold all 3 side buttons. Volume up and down and power/bixby.
Should usually work.
After in fast boot you must press a button Volume button to find via odin.

I already did that, unplugged the battery, reconnected it after 1min, connected my phone to the computer and pressed all 3 side buttons, still doesn t work. I guess the download mode is deleted or something..
Volume up & down, no side key, then connect to PC. Works for me. Connect to PC first does not work for me.

It wouldn't be deleted as it's a safety protocol if the device has a bad update and freaks out.
Maybe try to person above method.
Normally I can enter download mode with any of these methods if you cannot I'd suggest trying to get the device replaced due to software malfunction

Samsung phones use a tool called Odin to flash firmware. If you're flashing custom firmware firmware you'll need to have your bootloader unlocked.
I got mine into download mode just now. It's a Galaxy A13 .. Like stated above, try to hold all three buttons down and connect to USB. I had to let go before it showed the battery charge icon. From off. If not from off try from charging. I think that's what I did just now. Plug the usb -> let it show the charging icon (from powered off!) -> hold all three buttons, let it power on, let go. DONE.
just follow this video it helped me a lot to unlock my boot loader
