I'm having problem with my KIES. trying to upgrade to ICS, my phone is NOT rooted. I want to see the official ICS first while I'm on my 30 days return period before I root my phone.
I went ahead and tried the process posted in samsung website. I'm getting Timed Out error all the time though. I tinkered with my programs and removed a bunch of apple inc applications/software from my pc. (I used to have an iphone, i know iknow) I also know that i have a stable internet connection because i was on facebook when i was doing the upgrade. Next, I uninstalled and re-installed the KIES, restarted my phone, my pc, and both numerous time. I tried doing the ODIN, found a video here... BUT that posted a new problem... KIES won't even connect my phone to the pc (KIES).
I've been looking here and can't find any thread that has similar problems. I know it is not technically an xda problem since i'm still unrooted, but i've got tons of problem with my rooted inspire 4g and figured i wanna check the official release first before rooting my new skyrocket.
thanks!! please help me. I'm no expert so please be kind and please do not flame me.
not sure what the problem is your not very clear on it.
get the odin tar then put phone in download mode turn on odin click pda point it at the tar you downloaded and make sure just auto reboot is clicked and nothing else then plug phone into comp and flash. easy pizzie.
you say kies wont see your phone? sounds like you messed up the drivers try re installing kies.
Here is the process from SAMSUNG
DONE: Connect your device to your PC or laptop using the supplied USB cable.
Ensure that Kies recognizes your device by looking in the upper section of the left-bar navigation menu. Your device should be listed.
DONE: Once Kies recognizes the device you will see the following pop-up.
DONE: Firmware versions shown will vary.
Click Update.
DONE: Read through the Caution pop-up and, if you agree, click to populate the I have read all of the above information checkbox.
DONE: Read the Allow saving of information statement and select Allow saving or Proceed without saving and then click Start upgrade.
DONE: Kies will begin downloading firmware upgrade components from Samsung servers. This will take a few minutes depending on the speed of your Internet connection.
STUCK HERE>>>>> After a few minutes, Kies will then begin transferring the firmware binary to the device. <<<GIVES ME: The Operation has timed out>>>
Tried uninstalling KIES, reinstalling KIES, restart pc, restart phone, remove battery from phone, uninstalled bunch of apple inc. software from my pc... :-( I'm just lost. my internet works fine, i'm surfing the net while the firmware upgrade progress is ongoing so I know I have internet.
Any help will be appreciated.
Ok, sorry... I got it to work. I didn't put my serial number and model in KIES. After I figured my mistake it took about 20 mins and I now have ICS! Yey!
Mods, please delete or lock this thread. Sorry for the trouble.

well, when you open the KIES software... go to > TOOLS > FIRMWARE UPGRADE AND INITIALIZATION
A popup screen will ask for your phone's serial number and model. Serial number can be found at the back of your phone, under the battery. Same with the Model. When you get these in, the update will go thru no problem.
Mine got stuck in exactly the same place during upgrade.
Thanks for the information about the SN and Model #.
It would have been nice if Samsung would have mentioned this little bit of vital info in the instructions. Mine moved past being stuck and appears to be continuing along with the upgrade now.
Thanx.
you are welcome. glad i could help.

using odin is easier
you will get the exact same firmware as what kies is giving you
plus having the file on your computer you can always reflash it any time u want
when its on your computer it only takes 5-7min to flash

If anyone is able to assist me, I would really appreciate it. Being so sick of Samsung's slow upgrade service, I thought I would follow what so many have done and root my phone and flash android 2.3.3 to my Samsung Galaxy S.
Everything was going fine until Odin's screen changed from yellow to RED with FAILED across it. My phone had a blue progress bar only half way across the download screen and all things stopped. I removed the battery and tried to reboot, but now have only a small picture of a phone and a computer showing a broken link. I love the Galaxy I9000, is there any hope for repair?
If you can access download mode reflash it.

i can help you. At odin chose "debug only" and then "PDA Format" and it will work 100%
Thank you "Thanks Meter"for responding... What version of Odin are you using and where do you get it?? I am using Odin 3 v1.82 and it doesn't have a "Debug Only"button or a "PDA Format"button. How do I select these things??
Also do you where there are any Australian based firmwares?? My Galaxy is a Vodafone based Australian phone and I would love to get a firmware that suited the phone, (if one exists that is).
Thank you again for trying to assist. You're a good bloke, not many try to assist.
I just thought I would let you know that I tried my best to follow your instructions. I have never had Odin successfully complete a flash even once. However, I did run it with only the PDA selected and that was the most helpful.
The problem is now that the phone is locked into a startup phase. I get to the "S"elblem on startup and then the phone reboots and starts again, over and over again without ever completing the log on cycle.
Have you heard of this before?
This is driving me nuts...
Thank you to all members who responded to my problem post. I have had no success but I really appreciate your efforts..

I think I put myself in a bad situation here...
I spent all day trying to figure out how to root my 5 week old Nexus as it's tethering ability is my only access to the web.
So - step one, I did the one-click method, as the instructions I was finding for "the long way" were written by people who know what they're doing FOR people who know what they're doing.
Once that was accomplished, I downloaded Rom Manager. Unfortunately Rom Manager didn't seem to want to work with One-Click's style of rooting, locking me on the boot screen every time I tried using it.
So, I finally worked out how to root my phone the "normal" way and Rom Manager was working.
Here's where my mistake came in... I was one part frustrated from how long it took me to figure it all out, one part elated that I finally DID figure it out, so I immediately put Cyanogenmod on my phone... without backing it up. I played with it a bit, but realized my mistake, so downloaded the 2.3.3 Stock Rom.
That totally futzed things up for me... First, my USB connection isn't working anymore. The USB cable still powers my phone, and the USB ports on my PC still work, but I can't get a phone to pc connection through USB anymore.
Second, my cell radio isn't working anymore, I can only get anything over wifi. The OTA 2.3.4 update was pushed and installed to me that way (The current version my phone is on now...)
Third, apparently my phone was no longer rooted, so Rom Manager wouldn't work anymore for me. When I go to the bootloader menu and try to Recover, it brings me to an android with a triangle and exclamation point symbol.
Once there, some trial and error brought up a menu that I'd hoped would have let me reroot or reinstall a working Rom, but every one I try gives me a Signature Verification error and aborts the install...
So, I'm stuck... Without my USB connection working, I can reroot my phone, and without rerooting, I can't get a working ROM back in place. If ANYBODY can help me with this, it will be greatly appreciated. If any additional information is needed, I'll do my best to give it. Thank you...
Who is your carrier? Need to know which phone you have.
Also I assume that since you said you rooted the hard way eventually, that means you successfully used Fastboot to unlock your bootloader, yes?
The Android with exclamation point is just the stock Android recovery partition.
The key to fixing your problem will be to get USB connection between phone and PC.
Please plug in your phone to USB connected to your computer, then put your phone into Bootloader mode (Power on while holding Volume Up). On your computer, open a command prompt window and type "fastboot devices" and post what it says.
Can you see the phone in fast boot by usb also have you course factory reset and then try to flash

The big problem is that I'm unable to make a USB connection anymore. My phone is not reading any kind of connection to allow for file transfers or debugging, but it still powers the phone.

This will ensure the proper must up to date drivers are installed for you. This is the best and most reliable way to get the correct drivers.
EDIT: Then try fastboot again and tell me the output for "fastboot devices"

It was already installed, but I reinstalled it. I got to the end of the process where it asked me to go into USB Debugging mode and won't finish the install because it's not reading the USB connection.

No worries, thanks for trying. If you have hardware failure you might be out of luck. USB connection is pretty crucial for this stuff.
Maybe you can try Odin. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=947950

I've been looking into Odin, to see if there's a way I can do it just by pushing the files I need to my phone's sdcard and going into recovery mode. Not looking likely, but I'll read through the thread you linked me and maybe something will pop up. Thank you...
On the plus side, I just contacted Sprint and I *might* be able to get my phone replaced... Much as I'd like to troubleshoot this myself, it's looking like my only option. Too bad getting a phone replaced this early in a contract, just out of the warranty period is a total pain in the neck...

It was downloaded through ROM Manager.
And yes, if I could get back into ROM Manager, I'd warn people NOT to flash their ROM to that. Bad mojo there.
My suggestion is to try and use Odin to flash it back to stock, I don't think Odin needs any drivers to see the phone...

Yeah see the thing is there is no 2.3.3 for NS4G. If you flashed 2.3.3 that means you flashed a GSM Rom on your CDMA phone. Oops! not the first time it has happened I'm sure.

Which totally explains what went wrong... Wow. ROM Manager, I though, was supposed to only bring up ROMs that are compatible with your phone model. Any way somebody can either let the developer know about this, or at the very least put a comment in the 2.3.3 ROM that specifically says it won't work with Sprint's network? That way nobody else will go through the hell I put myself through...
I'm wondering, could the USB connection issue be connected, like the "program" that controls that is integrated with the radio? Just curious, is all. Thanks again for your help!

Yeah. I have the T-Mobile version. When I download through Rom Manager I get a popup that says "select your phone model" or something similar and then two choices: "Nexus S" or "Nexus S 4G". It would be really easy to mess that up.
The good news is that I believe your phone can still be recovered, you're definitely not the first person with this exact issue, and at worst, it sounds like you have a Sprint rep who is willing to work with you. I think Odin is your only chance for a software solution. I can't walk you through Odin though, because I've never used it myself.
Let me know what happens.

If your rom version support the zerg rush rooting method you can do it, install cwm and flash a rom from there.
I never had to flash anything using odin, tried using odin only once and even then I dont think it recognized my phone due to bad kies drivers(which I have fixed by now).

BUMP
Hi, I want some help with this same issue. I'm not sure what forum etiquette is here, whether you guys prefer a bump of an old thread or that I just start a new one??
Anyway my phone is wigging out so I wanted to wipe and flash but I can't figure out how to do this since no PC/cord combo will recognize my phone, though it still charges. I wanted to use ROM Manager to flash OTA, but I can't since I can't figure out how to get cwm installed ota. I've been digging around the forum and googling for a couple days now to no avail.
Version - 2.3.5
Baseband - I727UCKJ2
Kernel - 2.6.35.11
It was rooted but I never flashed any roms. It randomly shuts itself off and upon a battery pull will get stuck in Odin dl mode? If i do a batt pull after that it will go straight back to Odin dl mode or it get's stuck in a vibration loop. Sometimes if I plug it in it will start up with a dead battery though?
Any ideas?
Should I just make a new thread on this??
clean the usb port on the phone, then the usb shall connect, i had the same prob its fixed now

I'm assuming you're rooted and have usb debugging on.

Not rooted, I was under the impression that you didn't have to be to install the leak. And I discovered this whole thing while I was trying to root my phone.
Okay, I've tried manually updating/installing the Skyrocket drivers, and I get the message "Windows cannot install the driver software. This device cannot start (Code 10)"
I've officially determined that it's my computer. I tried it on my brother's laptop and it worked just fine.
uninstall the drivers. reboot. reinstall the drivers. possibly something went corrupt.
I had to uninstall Samsung Kies and re-install it. Reboot a couple times thenc onnect your device to the PC. The device sat seemingly unrecognized for several minutes until suddenly a pop up appear and the drivers re-installed to the PC. Good to go after that.
I tried both of those, still get the same error message. I'm just gonna try it on my brother's laptop. I feel like there's probably something wrong with the USB ports on mine. Thanks for all your help.
Final update: Worked just fine on my brother's laptop. Currently running the ICS leak on my phone.
So sick of this issue
I hate to revive old threads, but I gotta get this off my chest. I'm so damn sick of non-functioning USB. It has affected me on numerous ROMs, two different devices, and a total of 3 USB ports (squaretrade warranty paid for a replacement at one point).
WTF @SAMSUNG!!!! Get yo' s*** together. I'm convinced that it is a straight up bad hardware batch and I'm about to dump the skyrocket altogether for the S3. I've reached the point where it's no longer worth the time/effort/money to keep owning a skyrocket. I've never had troubles with the wife's S3.

Basically, what I am trying to do is Unroot my phone / revering back to stock, but did some dumb things to the point where I am stuck on this screen. I am currently using Odin to do all of this, but Odin doesn't recognize my phone for some odd reason because its been read before. So I did some research and read that I had to uninstall then reinstall some drivers then reboot my computer then do everything again. I did that, but Odin is still not recognizing my phone. I tried plugging my phone in all USB ports of my computer and its still not recognizing my phone. What do you think I should be doing? I definitely need some help and it would be greatly appreciated if any of you can help me.
Tried a different cable? Wiped data/factory reset?
It's in download mode, that's a good thing.
Which Odin version are you using? Samsung kies installed? You could try uninstalling kies/drivers & go heimdall one click.. search for lumin30's guide (it's sticked in forum). Mash thanks in his thread if it helps

Well, yes it's in Download mode, but the alternative one with the phone, !, and computer. Also I can't wipe/data factory reset unless theirs a way to get that if so let me know. The version of Odin I am using 1.7, so I tried v1.80 and the latest version which is 3.07. Yes, I have Kies installed with the drivers as well. I also looked into that heimdall one click, but there is too much stuff to do and download that my computer cant handle because it is really old so maybe if there is another way around this that would be helpful other than that I don't know what else to do.
Whatever you did that got it there... was perfect. If you had just flashed it once more when you got to that screen, your phone would have been working ever since.
Now? No clue what you've done with drivers and the like since back then. Try a one-click in a new USB port without installing any drivers?
Does the computer see the device and not Odin or do both see nothing (any beeps ?).
Are you doing the battery drop in while it's connected to the usb? Or booting it (into download mode) then plugging it into computer?
Which Rom are you trying to flash?
Windows should be able to do the one click. Which version (of Windows) are you using?

Look for Gremlin Remover in the dev section. It is an Odin One-Click.

You need Samsung drivers for ODIN.
That pesky kies installs them.

I know. Uninstall it then download fresh ones. Or just plug your phone in again and let it download new drivers.

Odin only recognizes your port only if you actually in the download mode; the one with the picture of the android robot and the word 'downloading.' Here is what you need to do:
1) open Odin program;
2) remove battery from your phone;
3) plug USB cable into computer and your phone;
4) press the up and down volume keys at the same time;
5) As you hold down the volume keys, put the battery back on the phone, and wait for about 3 seconds. You should be able to see the download robot. If it doesn't work, try it again.

It's okay if just decided to get a new phone through my insurance it's fine no need for any of this anymore, but thanks to everyone that helped me. Next time I root my phone I make sure I back up everything that I need!

Well, if you plan to root your new phone in future, you are going to run into this issue again. Backing up the data won't help you get out of this jam. My advice to you is to use your new phone as is; don't try to root or install customize roms <<<---that was a painful experience, but I've mastered the timing to the point it takes only one try now.
If you are a first timer, it is not easy to get into download mode. You have to do a couple of times to get a hang of it. It becomes an art form - just like getting into DFU mode on an iPhone for first time.

I'm wondering why no one told OP to use Heimdall One Click back to stock KJ6...
Its really not that difficult dude! Its scarier than it really is . Trust when we tell you. Its gonna be more time consuming than anything else bout 2 maybe 3 hours ...this includes downloading, deleting, re downloading, connecting, disconnecting, "If u can get Odin to open and running on your old computer. You should be able to get Java, Bhundvens 1 click ..and Or Gremlin remover".!!! Kies is only good if you want the Samsung drivers once you've got your phone back to full fledge stock. If you want to save the $130 its gonna cost you for a phone through (Assurion)that in reality isn't worth buying again your better off using that towards a New phone trust me bro I'm no dev and don't speak they're language Lol (I wish) I personally know from frustrating trial and error! Believe that u can do it and when you do it you'll be like wow that's it!!! Just try being more cautious homez.
