Having problems after official 4.0.4 update via kies - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I have been waiting for the official ics update and it finally came out and i updated my phone through samsung kies. After it was done updating i had a ton of problems. Applications would foreclose on me, my phone would hang up on the lock screen and would reset and this literally happened every 10 minutes. I just dont know what to do. i want to keep ics but have no choice but to go back to GB or unofficial ics(4.0.3). Can someone help me out why im getting these problems?

do a factory reset, or try the odin tar.

I would say use Odin to flash back to 2.3.5 and then take the 2.3.6 ota. If u really want the stock ics released by att you can then try to update again through kies but I would recommend a rom instead.

I believe u can also go into standard recovery and wipe caches. I heard this can help fix fc issues. Dont do a factory reset in settigs! Can someone confirm cache clear on stock recovery or is cwm necessary. I don't want to steer him wrong.

explain why he shouldn't do a factory reset?
as i can tell his os is busted already so he might as well try it.
and don't do roms they are just bad stick with stock and mod it yourself.

Source has not been released yet so it can't be known whether the kernels have the brick bug fix. The rule of thumb at least until source comes out is never do any wiping within ics. It will corrupt a partition (I forget which particular one) as the MMC_CAP_ERASE command is giving resulting in something like 20 0's being placed in the partition renderring it useless. If this occurres then nothing (as of now anyway) can repair the phone. No jtag, no USB jig, etc will be able to save it. Samsung was aware of the issue and probably fixed the kernels but until source is dropped better be safe than end up with a paper weight

How do u possibly think roms are bad lol and unless u are simply talking about button mods, changing signal/ battery icon, 14 toggle notification bar and a change in kernel there isn't much the average user will be able to change. Roms are so much better than stock. If u don't feel the same then u must of had difficulties with the particular rom u used or chose an unstable rom. I have had 0 problems on SeanZ Sky ICS....I highly recommend it

that brick bug you talk of is probably non existent with the new samsung releases.
also its been very well observed that mod roms are plagued with problems fc's ect ect.
he can make his stock rom look and feel like Google ice 4.0.4 very easily.
the only thing he needs is a unsecured kernel, then he is on his way.
this is just my opinion.
i have rogers stock 4.0.4 with mohens kernel and a couple of other mods and i have my sgs2 looking exactly like a nexus and everything works as it should no fc's and other crap like that.

Key words here are "probably". I agree it is most likely fixed but I don't want to see someone end up with a broken phone because we think Samsung "probably" fixed their kernels.
As for the rom I have not had any fc's lag etc. You can do what you like with your phone I am just merely stating that I have been issue free with Sky ICS as have many others. There is always the chance of issues arising but following instructions and reading the thread will clear up any problems. If u do ur homework ie read and/or ask questions if u don't understand something then many of these problems people have could be avoided IMHO. People on XDA wouldn't constantly be flashing roms if they were all filled with bugs and stock were there best option. Just saying...
For the sake of this thread and helping the OP I will avoid the back and forth about custom rom vs stock as the main point here is to help the OP get his Skyrocket back up and running as it should

well im happy you satisfied with sky ice. my point if i didn't make it clear is that mod roms use stuff from different roms and phones that don't work right with our phones and there will always be problems with it. it is easier and safer to stick with stock and build it up yourself. i have tried everything out there for my phone and hard bricked it twice and i have come to the conclusion that stock is best but for the kernel a unsecured is a must and maybe a good Governor will help.

You could odin a version of Clockwork Mod onto your phone and wipe the cache and dalvik cache if you want to try saving everything. That would eliminate any concerns about the "brick bug"
Did you do the update install or the wipe install? See this post for info on the different methods.
I suggest that you do the wipe install. You will have to re-install all your apps. It will like setting your phone up when it was new. In many cases an upgrade install will have problems.
.

Thanks alot guys...i wiped data/factory reset, wiped cache, and wiped dalvik cache and flash stock first and then updated it through kies. Its finally working normally

[Q] ICS_SMOOTHIE not working for me

Hello everyone, just got my skyrocket gs2 (from ios4s) and longstory short,
i was told (by att rep) this phone did ICS....
so now i know it doest for now.......so i decided to root(ok so far) and
all that jazz......
im up to the point where i drop in the rom on extcard to install.
The problem im having is that the ROM im trying to run is
ICS_SMOOTHIE
and its not working properly. When i install (about 5 tries already) all goes good till reboot. I reboot, phone "sammy text" appears 3-6 xs, then eventually i get the ICS intro with all the colors and 1sec after it appears, it freezes and theres like a "Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" sound like a turbine engine like if phone was gonna blow up.
My ? is, whats going wrong? i followed the guide to the letter and did every step(as far as clearin cache etc) multiple times.
if this rom is bad (i also downloaded twice) then are there more ICS roms
out there that r good?
Thanks in advanced.

OK I see your problem. Looks like the rooting guide you followed is for GB (GB is gingerbread OS) which is before ICS. And let me get you the right guide... u need to flash this first http://rootzwiki.com/topic/23105-i727ucld2/ and that is becuz the rom itself doesn't have what is called the "radio" or "modem" for it to work properly so u need to flash the ics leak that came out first and then you have to flash CWM TOUCH recovery with Odin and root... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24085665 rooting guide for ics: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24050465

Firstly, man, the devs will kill you if you say they are just skins and not full ROMS..LOL...!
The step above in your post: You should not skip that step if you are coming from Gingerbread.
You flash the leaked ICS modem first thing.
Then you wipe data etc.......although the modem is onboard the ROM.
see mhx's Full Bloat ICS here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570498 FOLLOW THE STEPS AND LINKS FOR MODEM, KERNEL AND ROM in that post.
I have this running on my phone full time. I think that is that absolute safest for any newbie. Once you have ICS STOCK running, then you know you are good.
LMAO at all of you.
Thanks for all you guys help. i gave up and returned the phone lol, got a iphone 4s.......................( booooooooooooooooo ) lol
BUT, my quick question here (before i get stoned ) is lol, can i use these ICS "roms" on my galaxy tab? (im still a supporter) lol...
overall, i have samsung galaxy tab 8.9 and 7.1 and im wondering if i can use the tools you guys have provided on those 2 devices or if i have to go look for specific mods/upgrades for those devices seperately?
lol, thanks in advanced

Proud new owner of a rooted G2X, but rusty with the recovery.

First off, thanks for stopping by to assist. Secondly, I just bought a used G2X off ebay and it came already rooted, with super user already installed. However, there's no rom on there and it's still running Froyo 2.2.2.
I haven't messed with rooting, recovery, or ROMs since my G1 so I'm quite rusty, leaving me with a few questions.
1. I know LG just released a Gingerbread update, yet I can't access it or any of the previous updates through the about phone update area. That's because I'm rooted right? I wouldn't mind just having stock 2.3.4 on here for now.
2. I don't know if the previous owner already put a custom recovery on here or not (not very talkative) so is there a way for me to check that? I was reading that if I boot into recovery without a custom one installed, the default recovery automatically starts wiping and reformating and I don't want that.
3. And just a general consensus question, coming from my horrible Samsung vibrant, GB roms are the way to go with this phone right, avoid the ICS?
Thank you in advance for all your help. Appreciations.
To check if you have a custom recovery power off phone and then boot into recovery mode via Power + volume down until you see 2nd LG logo, then release. The recovery type will be on top of the screen and bottom if I remember right. To update through Over The Air, I believe you need to be stock completely.
1. unroot, and most of what you need is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049154
2.That might be the case I'm not sure, I think completely factory resetting the phone is doable by holding power + volume down/up... Not completely sure as that is as far back as I can remember when the phone was 1st released a year ago. the least you can do is try if you plan on flashing a custom rom.
3. Personally I like CM7 based roms... or at the least 2.3.3 roms, that have been customized.
Overall this phone is cake walk compared to flashing the G1 with all the partitions and the gold card and what not...
That's what I was going to do, but then I read this:
To perform a master reset using the hardware keys, follow these steps:
Back up all necessary data. See: Prepare for a master reset and back up data on Android
Turn off the phone.
Press and hold the Power and Volume Down, key.
The phone will turn on and display the LG Logo
Wait 30 seconds and thephone will display the open box and arrow pointing towards the phone.
Release the keys, and the phone will reset back to the start up screen.
And so I'm catious about checking that right now because I don't want it to reset right now, kind of has used to use it right now.
I actually miss root, so I think I will stay rooted and check out one of these nice GB ROMS. Man, I have missed custom ROMS lol Now it's just a matter of deciding which is the best to use. So out of th eloop anymore on this stuff.
And yeah, the G1 was an adventure. Soft bricked it twice before.
Ummmm well either way if you do flash a custom rom, you are gonna need to wipe regardless. PM with any questions after you do some searching. All the links and questions you have should be out there already.

Thank you for posting an intelligent thread. Basically if you don't want to wipe then you need to install cwm through nvflash, then create a backup. After that flash a rooted froyo rom. If you flash gb over froyo you will most likely have issues if you do not wipe properly. You can try it...but more then likely issues will arise.

ICS roms are buggy and are awesome but if you dont want any problems GB shouldn't fail you. The first ROM I used were ICS but after months of not being able to record anything I had to try out GB and so far these roms are perfect. The ICS are still badass but I suggest you mess around with all of them though G2x has awesome devs.
I can confirm that if you hold the volume down and power until the second LG screen comes up you will factory reset the phone. I accidentally did it yesterday when I flashed the stock recovery back on the phone and wanted to check and see if it had worked. I'm a complete noob with flashing etc but like mt3g said all the info is here just look around for it.

You could have recorded videos by downloading an app called video cam illusion. It does the job.
I forgot about my own thread! lol But thanks for all the insight and help. Currently running into a mobile network/data drop issue so taking advantage and flashing a whole bunch of different roms. From MIUI to Kang Banger is like 2 opposite ends of the spectrum, but I love them both!

[Q] Capacitive Button Help

I just installed UCLD2 Smooth ICE 5.0 followed his instructions and I like the Rom, but I have an issue. My home button and search button do not work at all. I've gone into the settings to see if there is anything to change what the buttons do, but I've found nothing.
Does anyone know what could be causing this? Or what I can do to fix it.
I had the same issue with flashing sky is. I did a nandroid recovery, then reflashed the whole thing and allowed the system to settle longer than the suggested 5 minutes. It works great now. Buttons are fine.

Well as it turns out that was only one of a myriad of problems, I may or may not have permanantly bricked my phone. I let the system settle, but now the screen isn't very responsive when I try to do anything on it. I also tried returning to stock, and have had the same problems.
I don't have any idea what happened, but it seems to be like a kernel problem.

There's been way too much of this nonsense recently. You don't even know what a brick is. All the new guys need to stop flashing everything they can get their hands on. Stop and read before you do this stuff to your phone. I read for almost a whole month, everything I could find before doing anything. Before I even flashed anything, I had everything needed to fix and return to stock, and made sure I completely understood what I was doing. Read and understand before you break stuff so you can fix it!

CM9 Skyrocket
I didn't flash whatever I could get my hands on thank you. I flashed NexusMod 4.3 Nexus UI first about a week and a half ago. Then I wanted to try and get something a little more like stock, but still ICS so after READING ALL THE INFORMATION on the post for ICS Smoothie v2 I flashed it after wiping data, cache, and dalvik and following the instructions regarding an ICS radio which I had not followed previously with Nexus Mod when I flashed it. Then the problems started.
There is no lockscreen even when the phone decides to work. When I start up the phone. Process.google.acore force closes as does process.google.gapps
Also when I unlock the phone the screen will respond to 1 maybe 2 swipes to find a homescreen then it'll hang.
I used ODIN to return to stock following the instructions on the Stickied post about doing so in the Development section. Also I'm sorry if some of what I said comes off rude I've just been trying to fix this for about 4 days with no luck and I really need some help.
Also I would've responded sooner, but it's finals week at my college so I've only got so much time.
Also I apologize for calling it a brick even though it was not. I do know what a brick is. It's when your device is unresponsive and will not turn on or do anything. It'a a paperweight or a brick.
I was freaking out my bad. I am sort of seasoned I was rooting my HTC Inspire when I got it almost a year ago, and I put ICS on it when the first leaks started coming out. I'm sorry I'm new to this phone. I will be getting better trust me. I just need some time to get used to the different quirks involved in this phone compared to my last one.

My suggestion still stands use the ics leak 1 click then root see how you like stock ics twiz if you want a more custom rom then goto cwm and wipe cache , factory reset, then in mounts wipe sys, wipe cache and wipe data do all of these 3 times before installing rom and kernel always let.it sit a few minutes to settle....

Sorry I didn't look in General before posting this in Q&A the General section in the HTC Inspire forum wasn't usually gonna have fixes in it maybe root methods, but not fixes for stuff like this.

What radio did you flash?
I did realize I had done it wrong I flashed this: ATT-GALAXY-NOTE UCLC5 radio
but it was the one located in the post for Embryo 2.2 and I didn't flash the embryo rom, so the radio file which Mohan made specifically for his rom didn't go over well with the rom I flashed.
I did get back to stock eventually. It just took a few tries and the efs fix. I'm now putting CWM touch back on my phone and flashing a Gingerbread Rom because ICS on our phone is still a little too iffy for my likeing. I'll probably just wait till Samsung releases source for the kernel and cook my own rom.

Just updated to official ICS from Rogers

hey guys,
hope everyone is having a great weekend, i was so pleased to find out that rogers finally released the official ICS update for my galaxy s2 skyrocket lte, so i get it updated today.. and one the TW launcher is so ugly and non customizable and worthless so i am in the midst of deciding on one that i like, so far ive tried ICS pro launcher. my main problem with my phone after upgrading to ICS is the fact that the swype typing is so slow and laggy you can barley hold on a conversation, it just seems like ICS slowed down my phone a crap ton, and mind you i have not rooted my phone at all nor have i ever installed a custom rom on this phone, what do you think could be the problem? the phone itself is so laggy, anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
-Davey
just to reiterate i did the update over samsung KIES, am i supposed to do a hard or a soft reset?
Maybe you should give other launchers a go, I use Apex myself, but Nova is also pretty good for ICS.

factory data reset is the best way just boot up to the default androdi recovery (same way as you would with CWM) then clear data/wipe. Then you want to disable all that crap rogers installs on our phones (stupid one music, one contacts bs) and other crap that samsung installs on our phones. In my opinion CM9 is much faster and better then the ICS rogers rom.
EDIT: I got a brand new replacement for my i727r so I didn't want to root it yet cause its in mint condition lol so thats what I did to keep the stock at decent speed
When ICS will be available for at&t I will format the whole phone in CWM then flash ICS tar in Odin...That way did a great impact on ICS speed when I was using Nexus s...OTA over the old gingerbread was slow as hell, but when I did a clean install from scratch phone was way faster...and even better battery life ..I never really liked update rather than a fresh install in any software matter...

Kies is a very stupid software full of bugs and slow ..Why you need it anyway ? you can backup your pics files ...etc... using the USB connection , other things like contact are already on your google account ... So I don't see what kies is important for ...

Grab the official Rogers ICS tar from sammobile.com and ODIN it to your phone...(that's after you wipe/format every partition (cache, data, system) in CWM recovery)...

[Q] Phone application force closes after finishing a call...

Hello, all.
I have a T-Mobile Blaze 4G with rooted stock ROM (Gingerbread), flashed radio version T989UVMC6, manually debloated and dewizzed. I'm running Halo launcher and Busybox Free version 9.6.
Since almost the first day I've had this phone, it would occasionally force close the phone process, usually when hanging up the phone with the Bluetooth radio on and paired with an earpiece. It happened bone stock, rooted, after I changed the modem, whenever. It seemed to happen less often after I changed the modem. The process always starts back up, but the Bluetooth device connection and system sound controls are wonky (unusable) until the phone is rebooted.
The only thing that seems to stop it is running Zepplinrox's V6 Supercharger script. That, however, occasionally freezes the entire system when trying to open certain apps, requiring a reboot. I've run earch after search on this subject, and nobody else seems to have this problem. The only thing I haven't tried is wiping the whole thing and flashing a custom ICS or JB ROM. I tried Dark Knight ver. 8 and hated it pretty much instantly.
I have two questions. Number one; Will flashing a custom ROM fix this situation? I figure that this must be a problem with the crappy stock Samsung ROM. Number two; Which ROM is fully functional and stable? I'd really like to keep this phone dependable. I don't care about the latest and greatest funky cool features that are hit-or-miss at best. I just need dependable, fast and functional.
Since you have been having issues for a while, I would suggest starting fresh. With a few runs of black hole wipe from cwm. Add a run of the gremlin remover for extra cleanliness. Then a flash of the latest ICS rooted stock rom and kernel, for reliability.

I'll definitely go for the rooted version! Does it matter what order in which the ROM and the kernel are flashed? Also, I take it from the name of the download link that I'll have to go through the process of de-bloating this thing again. S'okay, I actually enjoy that part, but I don't want to screw it up since I've not messed with anything newer than GB. Is there a good guide somewhere on the forum for apps that can be dumped safely? I know there was one for GB stock root.
Thanks for the response.

Flash the ROM then the kernel, rewipe cache and davlik, then profit.

A few more silly questions; Do I need GAPPS or is that just for CM? Aren't the CM 10 ICS nightlies fairly stable and relatively bug-free? I use CM7 on my Nook color and it's...okay... Just a few little annoying things pop up with that. To be honest, I like the idea of starting with a clean slate and adding stuff I like rather than pulling stuff out of the Samsung stock ROM, but the issues I've had with the Nook and CM7 have sort of scared me off. Your opinions?

All the AOSP ROMs for the Blaze needs GAPPs. And yes. The latest CM10 nightly is stable. And you said CM10 ICS? CM9 is ICS and CM10 is Jellybean.

The stock roms don't require gapps, but like Wolf said the cm10 jb variants do.
If your willing to use cm10 it is very stable. Just use the latest CM10 nightly and not the old stable version.

Of course. I get a bit confused ever since people started talking about 10.1.
Okay, I went ahead and installed the stock rooted ROM with the stock kernel. Went through the debloating process (mostly, there are some apps that I'm not sure I can do without so they stay for now), and did some customizing. I'm seeing a bit more battery drain. Is this an issue with ICS or do I need to try another kernel or supercharge the phone? I also have this crazy issue with ROM Manager ver. 5.5.3.0. It tells me that there is an updated version of Clockworkmod Recovery, but it freezes when I try to flash from ROM Manager. Also, ROM Manager freezes when I try to reboot into Clockworkmod Recovery. Maybe I need to test a bit more before I mess with it any more.
**EDIT** Well, it looks as if my CWM recovery installation is corrupted. Can I reflash it without messing up my current ROM?

Yes, with Odin, in the Dev forum
BTW, stay away from ROM Manager with our device. I've softbricked so many times because of it, it's ridiculous

Used this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011585, it worked well. Still have the battery drain issue, though. : /

Since you have it setup, except for battery life. I would make a backup, then try a mod one at a time and see if any help. Also check the battery stats to see if anything of is seen. ICS will use more juice than GB, generally.
I would suggest Nos/direct injection, supercharger, or cross breeder. I would use one and see, then restore and try another.

Some time later...
I've been using the stock rooted ICS ROM since my last post, debloated and dewizzed of course, with Holo Launcher and T989UVMC6 baseband version flashed. Just over a month has passed, and I have good news!
I FREAKING LOVE THIS PHONE!!!
All of the force close and freezing issues have vanished, the phone's battery lasts almost as long as it did on GB, it's WAY more user friendly, and the phone is as fast as it ever was.
The bad news is that my wife got a GS4 and I lust after it now. : /
Thanks to everyone for their help!
