Verizon SGSIII Does not allow switching btwn CDMA and LTE, will root fix that? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi,
I've had a Thunderbolt, LG Revolution and a GNex, and all 3 phones, regardless of OS version, would allow to user to switch between 3G (cdma) and 4GLTE under settings. This would eliminate dual active radios when switched to 3G only, and would help save battery life, especially on the Verizon GNex, which was a battery hog.
Anyway, it seems that for some reason Verizon even took that option away from us this time (makes me wonder why they don't just give us a phone with 10-digits and the answer and hang-up buttons, and do away with any other user options), and I don't see how this would "make the user network experience" or whatever cr/\p any better, like the locked bootloader supposedly does. To fix this issue and give us the option back to choose between 3G or 4G, would root or a custom Touchwiz ROM be ok, or does it require an unlocked bootloader and a custom kernel? I am really pissed about all this, but that aside, what does it take to give us the option back between 3G and 4G?
On a separate note, would a custom non-AOSP ROM also give us the Samsung wifi toggle back in the notification bar, and get rid of the continuous, ongoing, annoying "wifi disabled" notification? Or will that require a custom kernel? Can't wait till all this cr/\p is gone from this phone, what a great phone it would be then.
Thanks everyone

I don't know if you are a Verizon customer or not, but unless that app is different in some way, most of that type of apps access the menu *#*#3434#*#* that you could use to get to the hidden phone options menu. Verizon is extremely controlling and has all of these things locked down. That code menu does not work if you enter it directly in the dialer. Have you personally tried this app on a Verizon phone? I'll give it a try, but I've read that these only work on the versions from the other carriers.
Thank you

I thought the S4 is supposedly more efficient because the LTE modem is built into the SoC. Older devices had to actually switch radios (which drained the battery), these are integrated together. I am under the impression that the power management is very good based on the above on the SIII. I do not have my phone yet, so I will wait to determine if the power management is truly improved with the S4.

i'd hope this gets fixed with root so i can save battery life.
4g is a huge killer of battery life

I have personally tried it on my VZ Galaxy S3. Works perfectly, even though the code does not. Same menu as what you get with "LTE OnOff" for the Thunderbolt, although it requires one more button press.

Developing CDMA Preferred Network permanent fix

I would like to open discussion on developing a permanent fix for the horrible bug with Android 2.1 CDMA devices defaulting to a Preferred Network of GSM. My goal will be to develop a script or app that will either run at boot, via a cronjob, or as an icon/widget on the homescreen that will set the Preferred Network to CDMA.
The "Testing" app (*#*#4636#*#*) looks to be /system/bin/iqd. I have used strace to capture what the process is doing when the Preferred Network is properly set to CDMA, but I could not decipher it (didn't see any I/O on any files, only RAM). I've attached my log in case someone else can make sense of it.
This is the #1 issue on my Evo, and the only thing I have done to notice any change in battery life, and the difference is absolutely huge. Without applying this fix after EVERY reboot, I only get 4 hours max out of my phone. After applying the fix, I get 8-12 hours, which is actually reasonable. This desperately needs a permanent fix, and I can't imagine I am alone here.
Cheers!
This seems like a great idea.
I just checked my phone, it's set to CDMA auto. I am running fully stock, but rooted and unlocked.
Rayden1000
I just checked as well and this does not seem to be an issue with me. Mine is already set to CDMA(Auto). I have fresh installed and I also checked on my brothers stock Evo.
Actually I think everyone is affected by this problem.
Go to *#*#4636#*#* , phone info, and you will see that it says CDMA.
So far so good. Now, hit menu and then choose select radio band. and you will see a force close, don't panic now you will be back at the menu, hit phone information again and you will see that now it says GSM! choose cdma and hit back, done.
Now, I'm not sure if that actually does anything for battery life, as the phone doesn't even have a GSM radio. I think its just a pointless HTC bug from the hero days since android did not have native cdma, so HTC had to hack it in.
The purpose of this thread is not to determine whether or not you are affected by the bug. There are tons of other threads discussing that. If your "Time without Signal" value is excessively high (usually around 50%), you are affected, and are only getting about half of the potential battery life from your device (for Evos, it makes the device nearly non-functional because it won't last through a day. A friend also confirmed this on his Incredible, and now gets 2 days out of his battery instead of 1).
Let's limit this thread to only those who are affected by the issue and those looking for a solution. Thanks!
Now, has anyone taken a look at my strace log? Or does anyone have any idea where/how the phone's radio values are set? I noticed some references to "ciq-backend," perhaps this is a deamon, service, or command that we could tap into. Any ideas?

It absolutely has a huge affect on my battery as well as two of my friends' Evos (two are 0002, one is 0003), although I can't speak for all Evo owners. We all experience the same 4-5 hours battery life without the fix, and 8-12 hours with the fix applied. It's just such a pain in the butt to do it EVERY time the phone reboots.
well, its not the fix you are looking for, BUT, i have found that it makes changing this after a reboot MUCH easier.
Download an app called simply "network" from the market.
It gets you right into the test menu, and then you can hit select radio band and complete the process from there.
I think this should be something that could be built into roms but not sure... Also.. i am still not sure that by do doing hte select radio and getting the FC, that THIS isnt what is causing use to see it come up as GSM. No proof of that other than just the thought, but it could be like a default that after the FC causes to revert to (but i did notice better batter life after it than before and its something i have dont on every rom every time i reboot since it was discoverd.
Hope the network app helps a little until there is a permanent solution!
Thanks for noticing this.
I am having the same issue and i have HORRIBLE battery life. Im getting close to my 30 days and might want to switch this evo in for a newer one, but I dont want to lose root.
If i can get some more battery life out of this... I might just be a little happier.
I get like 12-15 without the fix and moderate usage and wifi/GPS on all the time (no 4g tho), but I tried changing it and we'll find out if it's any better.
4-5 hours has to be an exaggeration unless it's something to do with 4g :\
Its a big bug on htc phones and it will say cdma but its really on gsm.. some roms will get a "time without signal" which does drain a ton off battery cuz the phone is looking for a gsm network constantly and in a sense is roaming on cdma. We just dont see anything to do with roaming cuz its suppose to be our defaulted network.
Also we dont have a full gsm radio but we can connect to gsm networks.

No these phones cannot be used on gsm.
Yes I do see that now after I hit the menu and selected the band and it does seem to be an issue. My time without signal is around 45% which is insane considering I've had full bars all day. If we can figure some way to auto set this it would be great.

[Q] Unlocked Infuse 4G won't allow me to manually select network

So I'm in Bangkok this week, and I have my unlocked stock rooted Infuse 4G with me and my Tru Mobile Roaming SIM won't connect to the right network because the stock rom points to the default AT&T roaming partners, and when I try to manually select a network the manual selection is greyed out.
I read somewhere on here that going into app SamServMode and selecting debug and Debug Screen and Phone Control and Network Control then select Manual it doesn't allow for selection.
The issue is the phone is preferring a different network than my SIM has a roaming agreement with, so I need to be able to manually select. Anyone know of a solution without changing roms?
Thanks!
Anyone? I bought a local DTAC sim and it works fine since DTAC is the official AT&T roaming partner the ROM allows hooking on to it, but still can't use non-DTAC sims as the rom doesn't allow manual network selection
Bump.
Can anyone help her?
Sent from my Samsung Infuse 4G
So I'm heading home to the states in 24 hours... but I do think this is an interesting topic hopefully someone can assist with. Seems that even when unlocked, a carrrier cannot be manually selected, leaving roaming limited to the carriers att allows even when using another carriers global sim. Seems a limitation of stock rom but is the first time I've seen this on a phone.
Bella i've got the solution for you...
Flash the rogers modem..
The att modems have this feature lockedout, so any changes revert back.... I can confirm that the rogers modem gives full access to changing the network and it does stick....
Do so by pressing *#2263# with rogers modem.... You can then manually select the network to lock onto.

Do I need to install modded 3E recovery first, or just flash it from a stock rooted state in CWM?
I've not flashed a new radio before on this phone, so a step by step would be much appreciated.

Well I keep finding things that are limiting my experience with this phone. It's definitely been negative overall in comparison to my old Inspire 4g, which was so open, with many ROMs available, and none of the locked down attributes of this Infuse 4G.
So is it really the radio, or is it the ROM? And what are the upsides\downsides to flashing the Rogers ROM? I definitely need to be able to manually select my network, so if's become a non-issue, just need to know what the best way to accomplish it.
Advice\suggestions?
The limitations are built into the modem package.... Not the rom.
Right now the rogers modem performance (and when we say modem, we mean the modem software that tells the radio how to communicate with the network) is on par with the newest att modem with the only difference I can see it the being able to manually select any network.
Bella as for you, unless you rather use odin, to flash with clockworkmod you indeed need the modded 3e recovery and the I9000 version of cwm on your phone...

I installed mod'd 3e Recovery just fine, then flashed the radio posted above in this thread. Seems to have flashed fine, however the manual network selection is STILL greyed out. Any ideas as to why? Seems like another member who said the ROM (Stock AT&T Rooted) is responsible. Are you sure this isn't the case? Any idea as to why I can't manually select a network now?
Thanks!
Now with the Rogers Modem installed, when I go into Network Selection it still is greyed out and says "Default Setup" .. put in a foreign SIM that has both AT&T and T-Mobile USA provisioning allowed, and it doesn't let me select which to use.
:-(
Guess this doesn't resolve the issue. Anyone else have solution as to what I can do to get that Network Selection box available to use? This is the first phone I have ever owned that has disallowed access when I put in a foreign sim. It's getting really annoying dealing with Samsung's inadequacies between flashing and operational limitations, ugh. I would go back to HTC in a heartbeat if the Inspire 4G got better battery life. :-(

I'm just baffled. How is there not a solution that'll allow me to select the network I attach to? I'm not even an AT&T customer. I paid full price for my handset, it's fully unlocked, doesn't even have the AT&T radio anymore, yet I can't select the carrier in the carrier selection menu? I weep for the future of this country's wireless industry if the ATT\T-MO merger goes through.

Airplane mode is a feature of the phone and turns off all radios. You can hold the power button and choose airplane mode or use the quick toggle in the notification window. Since it sounds like you may be in an area with weak 4G, you can also use an app called Phone Info to set it to CDMA auto (PRL) under Device Information. You can also change it back to LTE/CDMA/EvDO if you want it to switch as normal.
With the Verizon S3, is there the need to do *228 (or *22899) ? I did this every so often on my old HTC Incredible.

Doesn't work on LTE devices. A reboot essentially does the same thing. Some have recommended pulling the battery with the phone on, removing the sim card for about 30sec and then putting everything back in.
Thanks, I know what airplane mode is, wasn't sure where the APN setting was. I will look in to phone info though.

Are you guys also experiencing the "No Sim Card" and "No Network Connection" issues?
Or is this an entirely different issue?
When this phone goes to 3g, it does seem extra bad on how long it takes to switch back to 4g. i have areas where i live where it goes to 3g when going in between hill (less than a 50 foot stretch) and it will not go back to 4g for over 10 minutes if i dont manually do it. Not to mention my LTE never goes above 10 mbps on the best days
Somewhat related...If you use Anycut to create a shortcut to IOTHiddenMenu, enter the ##DATA# Menu, edit. Under "Advanced", there is an LTE toggle, under "Other" > "HDR/1X" you can set the phone mode, and then under "Other" > "LTE APN Settings" you can somewhat modify the APN settings, reset and discard. If it asks for a password, it's 000000.
I gave these a try. I'm trying to find a way for my phone to favor 4G when there's a 4G signal, no matter how weak.
Yesterday I did a test, 3G with 3 bars vs 4G with 0 to 1 and 4G had consistently faster download speeds and shorter ping times. The upload varied from similar to 3G to slower.

probably easier said than done. The phone info app can force LTE but you lose voice and text.
Ya I found that out yesterday when testing speeds. I went to send a text then make a call and no luck
Otherwise 4G service where I live could be excellent at one spot then a mile away no service. If I had excellent 4G consistently I'd consider GoSMS which I believe has the option for data text and also a separate VoIP app
Ah well hopefully something will be figured out eventually. With a strong 4G signal 4G is considerably faster and more consistent than my 20mbps home broadband

I've had similar issues with my network. I had no 4G in 4G areas, but mainly my wifi would disconnect randomly and 3G also dropped to 1X a lot. I ended up having to send it back and get another one. So far no issues. Also the new ones have an "Updated" sticker on them. I think it was just a software update they applied, but I never got the OTA on my old phone.

Just open the app, select Device Information and scroll down to "Set preferred network type" and select "LTE/CDMA/EvDo" then get out of the app.. 4g should return shortly there after. [Q] sch-i535 on t-mobile

So here is what I am looking for... i have a Verizon SCH-i535, and what I am looking for is someone who has flashed the stock tmobile rom and changed the bands within the phone its self using the hidden menu (netmonitor app) to see if they can get more than just edge data... I have it flashed to AT&T right now and am using a friends T-mobile sim card that we cut down to fit into the SCH-i535 GS3... it seemed to sync with the towers and get mms.. text.. calls... and internet... just not 3g... You know I had not thought about using the global mode on verizon.. I will have to give that a try... do you know if that will allow for 3g on tmobile?
Useful thread so far, but I have a several questions.
I currently have a Verizon Galaxy S3 SGH-i535 with a T-Mobile prepaid sim card (unlimited everything), I can call and text, but cannot get any network access.
I'm currently running Clean Rom 5, settings on Global. Is there any way I can enable data, preferred 3G? [due to that T-Mobile will get 4G on Verizon phones next month).
On CM10, I get Edge and can receive text, but cannot send text. Tried APN settings, etc. Is there a fix for this?
I have tried everything, but no luck. Any suggestions is appreciative

Useful thread so far, but I have a several questions.
I currently have a Verizon Galaxy S3 SGH-i535 with a T-Mobile prepaid sim card (unlimited everything), I can call and text, but cannot get any network access.

So what I did is i unlocked the bootloader... rooted it... and then flashed the AT&T stock rom on it and then plugged in the TMO sim card and then changed the bands to GSM auto. and it picked up edge... I was able to get access to the network with data... but the only catch was that it was slow as hell... as it was only edge. I am still working on programming to get the i535 on the tmobile bands... thus far I have not been able to get the phone on 4g or even 3g yet... I will keep you updated though.

have you tried using the hidden menu in the dial pad at all??
There is an app out there that will get access to the menu and allow you to change everything in the phone... but be very careful with this app as it can and will brick your phone if you do not know what you are doing with the app..
Netmonitor --> look for this on the google play store
To change the bands to at least get data on the phone, follow the instructions below:
1. install Netmonitor on the S3
2. open the app
3. hit the menu button
4. select field test
5.select UMTS
6. Select DEBUG SCREEN
7. Select PHONE CONTROL
8. Select NETWORK CONTROL
9. select BAND SELECTION
10. Select either AUTOMATIC or GSM Band Preference
* if you choose automatic the phone will look at the sim card and go from there to get the phone on the network to get data on the phone.
11. Select GSM ALL
This is the thread that I am following at the moment to get the phone on HSPA+ or 3G.. If you have anymore questions then please let me know I will do my best to help you out.

I have not tried that yet, but just right now, I got successful on connecting with Data by changing my APN (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34632097#post34632097), but fairly still slow G speed. Hoping for HSPA+ or 3G too.

Changing APN's is another way to do what I just told you about... My way is a little easier.. lol .. let me know if you want/need any further help
Hmm, one more thing:
Is there anyway to make this work on CM10 or AOKP? Due to that global setting/APN setting is not available on these ROMs. =/

I have not messed with custom roms just yet I am working with stock roms and rooting and unlocking bootloaders right now... I will see if I can find them time to load a CM10 on my s3 that I am using for development and get back to you with the results here as soon as I have them... I am not for sure if I am going to be able to get to it this week as I have alot going on but I will try and get to it.
Thanks for your support.
In the mean time, I will see if the CM or AOKP team can implement these settings.

that would be great! If I can help in any other way let me know.. or if they have questions please give them a link to this thread. and I will be more than happy to talk to them.
hey guys sorry that it has taken awhile for me to get back to you.. so I flashed the TMO rom on the I5 and got the same results just edge. I think that I am going to try using bobloblaw1 suggestion and flash the verizon leaked jellybean rom and then use global mode to be able to see if I am going to be able to get more than edge...
Here is a guide if you do not know how to flash roms on your S3 here
greetings, all.
i have the same problem that you are describing. running CM 11 Nightly (but problem also existed on VZW stock & CM 10.2). i have read all the forum's about this topic, but as of yet there seems to be no SURE fix to get anything faster than Edge data from T-mobile.

[Q] Radio Flashing for Noobs?

So I've been having the same battery problems as everyone else. I'd like to disable LTE on my ATT 727. Knowing that I could force protocols on prior phones, I went looking for the options to find none. So I decided to flash CM10. I learned after flashing CM10 on my device that the radio needs to be flashed also. I've tried flashing a few different radios but it appears that they simply aren't flashing. Recovery goes through the motions but the version never changes. I've read rumors that I need to do a subsidy unlock but I haven't seen any real confirmation of it. Is that true? A carrier subsidy unlock must be done to flash over the RAT locked ATT radio? I would expect that to be in the noob listts with radios if so.
Baseband version: I727RUXLF3
Kernel: 3.0.49-cyanogenmod-g5756af3
Recovery: CWMR Touch v5.5.0.4 _sk8_
Thanks in advance for the advice. I really want to like this device. Hopefully between wakelock and LTE we can get it useable.
castle
There is a dialer code you can use to access radio settings and turn off lte. I don't remember what it is offhand.
This: *#*#4636#*#*
^^Type into dialer^^
Also, try updating to a newer version of sk8's cwm.

I'll try a newer CWM and report back.
The menu you gave works the same as the menu available in the ROM I'm using. The options are available but when selected the lte option is force selected. Its good information nonetheless.
Thanks!

OK, so I'm definitely getting a flash. The radio is changing. I am not able to force LTE off.
Do I need a carrier subsidy unlock?

Thanks for the info. I wasn't able to find the text you referenced to read it in detail. It looks like you're telling me that CM10 has a bug where the network mode can't be set for AT&T Skyrockets.
Do other roms have the same problem?
Thanks!

This is the same for pretty much all recent at&t smartphones. Last 5 I have had have had that option blocked. There is a possibility if you pull the sim card out, boot phone back on, use the dial code listed previously to set it and then put sim back in you might get the desired results. Not sure they will stick though.

Perhaps I've misunderstood but I thought I had read that flashing the Roger's radio would fix the problem as it's RAT unlocked (whatever that means).
I can pop the sim out and see what happens.
Setting preferred network mode is what I was talking about
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
you could also go to your APN's and switch to the non LTE one
this will stop you from having mobile data altogether in some areas but will give you the desired battery effect
otherwise ive never seen the preferred network option work on a rom

Don't know about Rogers that is why I said at&t. I haven't even been able to get the rat selection screen to give any other option but lte ones on this device. On my lg thrill I was able to get different options by popping the sim out like I suggested but of course that is a non lte phone.
As a side note, I haven't seen much difference in battery life between running lte data or wifi data. I could see this as beneficial if in a non lte area or weak signal area.

Which I have flashed. Does you know what the requirements are to disable LTE, to take advantage of the rat unlocked radio? I don't believe I'm in a good signal area and would like to at least try changing protocols. If I can't get this phone to a 12 hour life, it's going back.
Thanks!

You have to select search manually in the networks menu. Let the phone search and select at&t when it finishes. You can than change network settings. I do it all the time on aokp with a Rogers radio.
