Verizon SGS3 battery life? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Does the Verizon version of the Galaxy S III have worse battery life than the other carriers' versions. So far I have had pretty poor battery life with my phone. I have had it since Friday the 6th. Since then I have gone through multiple charge and discharge cycles. I've been averaging about 8 - 10 hours of life, with about 2 to 2.5 hours of screen time. I use the phone for about an hour of browsing the web in the morning, on the train to work, then another hour on the way back. While I am at work I turn off the mobile data and WiFi. I basically only use it to check text messages. In that time It'll still drain about 5 to 10 percent per hour. I have already reset my phone to factory settings. It also seems to act normally up till about 70 percent, then it starts to drop really fast. I want to maybe get another battery from the store, but as the phone hasn't even been released yet I'm not sure what my luck would be. Has anyone else been having better results if not similar problems? Does this seem like an issue that could be solved by replacing the batter, or would a replacement new phone be needed to fix this?

Replacement battery
It seems that Verizon cannot give out any replacements until the in store launch on Thursday at the earliest.

AT&T seems to be pretty horrible. Have you tried CPU Sleeper by eugene373?

I have not tried that, but I have tired standard things such as Juice Defender Ultimate and what not. The biggest thing to me is that even when I turn off mobile data and wifi, it still starts to drain rapidly after about 70 percent. I will be at about 70 percent at 4:00 pm and by 7:00 i'll be at 10 percent with 30 min usage during that time frame, with only on LTE during that 30 minutes.

I have had 4G on all the time, and unplug it at 6am and it has lasted me quite easily until 10-11pm (down to about 10%). I have all data sync on, send approx 100 text a day, play a few games daily, read forums, Google reader, stream music and tethering as well.
I would contact Verizon support. It may be just as simple as a new battery. As of right now I still have 41% left and that will last me the night.
edit: I am also not using any battery saving apps like juice defender or turn off mobile networks either.

Ya, I did and they said I could come in and get a new battery tomorrow, so we will see how much that helps. I just hope I don't have to get a replacement phone because more or less likely the new one will be refurbished. Plus I hate wasting screen covers.

If it is under 30 days they will usually replace with a new phone. That has been in my experience. this happened with my Fascinate when I first got it.

Is it worth trying to just get a new battery first. Or should I just go straight for the phone replacement?

Coming from the rezound, 2-2.5 hours is amazing battery life!
Honestly, it may just be the battery. Try that first, and if it still fails, then return the device. Just remember that Verizon only does 1 free battery during the warranty period.

you guys need to debloat...the problem is the 100 apps that verizon preinstalled has many backgorund services running.
After debloating I went 27hrs w/ 3hrs screen on, 2hrs talk time, and still had 17% percent battery left...like a BOSS!!!

i'm amazed at verizon's battery life. i have an AT&T one and after 6 hours of use and 2 hrs screen time, mine was at 53%. my girlfriends was at 53% with 13 hours of use and 1 hrs 14 min screen time. i cant figure out why.

My room mate has one from AT&T and he can get about 20 hours till 20 percent, with 4 hours of screen time. Not to mention making phone calls and what ever else he does on it during the day. My battery life seems normal in the morning. The only reason I want to get it replaced is that at about 70 percent it'll start dropping rapidly even if I don't touch it during that time.

take a min and go through all the settings in the phone that you think might effect battery life and if you don't use it that often, shut it off. also, disable the apps you don't want/use in application manager. i have about 24 apps frozen, smart stay off, motion off, brightness at 1/3, email sync set to manual, location services off, facebook sync and notifications off, bluetooth off, wifi off, menu/back lights off, heptic feedback off. i can't remember what else but yesterday i unplugged it at 430am with normal use throughout the day (numerous email, facebook, play store use, texting, hr worth of phone call) and this morning at 6am i was at 9% battery left (this was in 4G). Id say that is pretty good! i am very pleased with the battery life with this phone! everyones battery life is going to be different with all the combinations of settings that can be different.

Which apps, did you freeze? Also I just got the new battery so I'll give it a day or so and see what happens.

Is this normal? My screen on time is about 1 hr and 20 min... Not sure if this is good or bad. Yesterday I only got about 6 hrs with around 2 hrs of screen on time.

I am not rooted either as of now, I am kind of waiting to see if they find a bootloader work around. I disabled most of those apps, plus I picked up a new battery around mid day. The only other thing I have noticed is that the phone oddly seems to charge better while on then off, where as my DINC was the complete opposite.

7 hrs of Standby = 33% of Battery?!?!

Okay so I noticed my Captivate seems to lose a lot of battery while in standby. To test this, I left it unplugged when I went to bed last night. I checked the battery level right when I went to sleep and then again when I woke up...
My battery drained from 64% to 31% in about 7 hours!!!
I know other threads discuss bad battery life. A bright screen and a 1GHZ processor can cause this so I can understand why the phone won't allow me to browse the web for 10 hours straight. But is everyone else getting an almost 5%/hour drain in battery while in standby?
Here is a little info about my setup:
-I took off an animated background and put one that is relatively dark (Screen is off during standby so I would think this doesn't matter)
-I have WiFi and Bluetooth enabled.
-I use both wireless networks and GPS for location.
-I have 1 Gmail account setup to check every hour.
-I have the Daily Briefing set up to check every 3 hours.
-I have the Slickdeals widget set to check every 2 hours.
-I have the Latitude widget running (you can't set how often it refreshes).
-I have the ESPN ScoreCenter widget running.
That's about all I did that I can think of that can possibly affect battery. I know I would get better battery with less background widgets, but all of this is in line with the amount of background services I had running on my last phone (Tilt 2) and that thing would last for several days with light use.
So, what I'm trying to find out is whether or not this is normal behavior that everyone is seeing or perhaps if one of the background widgets I'm using is known for draining a crazy amount of battery. Maybe I need to hard reset the phone? Thanks in advance for any ideas on how to lock this down.
In poor reception I could see that. But I'm good area that's too much. Like 2% every hour is good... 5 is too much....
Thanks for your reply. I had 3 bars of service where I was last night. Also, this isn't the first time I've noticed about 5%/hour for standby, just one example...
So it sounds like I'm getting worse drain than normal? Now, how to fix it?
Well...with all the email checks and having various Widgets check for updates..it will definitely drain the battery. I have been able to easily get twelve+ hours on standby without GPS on and turning off wifi when not at home or in a place with wifi.
Definitely can't go days without charging like I could with previous phones like my blackjack II buy I can get 12-16 hours with light to moderate use and 10-12 with somewhat moderate use of Facebook, wifi, various other apps.
EDIT: the Bluetooth as well will drain the battery.

I have very similar battery usage to use. About 5% an hour not doing anything. I am always around a wifi and leave it turned on. I have nearly an out of the box setup. Between the poor battery life and crappy GPS, I may very well be taking this thing back.
Under Settings > Wireless and Network > Wi-Fi settings > Bring up the Advanced menu and set the Wi-Fi sleep policy to "Never".
This has helped my battery life immensely, since I am around Wi-Fi most of the time. This way all your data happens over Wi-Fi instead of 3G when the screen sleeps. I disable Wi-Fi when I'm not around any APs I normally connect to.
Pulled phone off the charger at 6:00AM yesterday morning. Streamed an hour and half to 2+ hours worth of Pandora over wi-fi getting ready for work and then some in the car. Did some web surfing during the day, various other things. (No phone calls really, except a brief wrong number). 4 e-mail accounts checking every 30 minutes (one an Exchange server). Also have Touchdown running push e-mail for another Exchange mailbox along with the Touchdown widget. Played around with some GPS apps (new google maps, Places, etc for a few minutes). Battery was down to about 16% by about midnight last night.
My phone charged fully overnight (with power off). Was turned on at 7AM, it is now 11am, and am at 90%.
I do not use GPS, have nothing running, no emails or social networking status updates.. The phone is on standby on my desk. I only do a few text messages and 5 minutes of voice calls / day.
So this means I get 40hrs of standby time? That is a little ridiculous.
I chatted with AT&T tech support and they said that the AT&T stores don't have battery replacements yet, but I could get a full phone replacement since I am within the 30 days still.
But from what I am hearing, it seems most people are having the same issue if not worse, correct?
I really don't want to set everything back up AGAIN. I am coming from using a Samsung Eternity - understand it isn't a true "smartphone" - but I use it the same, and would easily go 3-4 days without needing a charge.
with GPS off, wifi off, BT off, no data sync or background data turned on, i charge it fully at night -
last 3 nights in a row, at midnight it was showing 100% and at 7:30AM it would show 97-98% remaining, and that was using the alarm, set to loud and probably ran 2 minutes before i'd hit the off button
From 7:30am-11am, I have used 4% of my battery. I have these things going on:
-Exchange sync (real time)
-Facebook sync (once every hour)
-wireless off, bluetooth off, GPS not being utilized
-Weather.com and a Google search widget
The battery use shows this:
-Cell standby: 48%
-Phone idle: 36%
-Display: 8%
-Android System: 3%
-Email: 3%
-Android OS: 2%
I've barely used my phone this morning, so I'd think 4% of use in 3.5 hours is quite acceptable. It sounds like you need to make some modifications to improve your performance.
firehazard - what modifications have you done? I have wifi/bt off, background data off, no email syncing - display brightness all the way down..
To anyone who is having very poor battery life, I suggest a factory data reset when you exhaust other options. My phone wasn't lasting me more than about 8 hours on a full charge, with light to moderate usage. After a factory reset, I just ran nearly 24 hours with similar usage.
I can't tell you what changed or what got removed, maybe it was an app that was running and draining the battery that I didn't see, but battery life is MUCH better now. Hell, everything is running much better, even the GPS.
I went from wanting to throw this phone at a wall and return it for my iPhone 4 again, to loving it in less than 24 hours.

I'm referring to him running wifi and bluetooth when he's not even using his phone. Stuff like that.
Just for recording keeping, when a phone company says their phone can last XXXHours in Standby this means, that all wireless transmitters are off. this means (for the most part) airplane mode, with bluetooth, and wifi OFF.
these continuous wireless transmitters are why you didnt get the 200Hours or what ever it is in standby mode.
I recently took my phone back to BestBuy for a replacement since my battery was trying to kill itself overnight as well. I did the full charge when I first got it and purposely ran the battery down to quickly get it to turn itself off at 0%. Did a full recharge and repeated this process about 3 times and last night my battery only went down 3% over 6 hours. Compared to the 30-40% that was draining before, I'd say the full discharge/full recharge works that people have been talking about in the battery threads works. Thanks, everyone! I use Y5 to have it automatically connect to my WiFi at home when it's in range. Not much more than the usual was left to sync (although JuiceDefender may be working to turn stuff off when my screen is off) such as Gmail, Beautiful widgets, facebook, and one rss feed.
Either that or I had a crappy battery before
Seems like some folks are having the same problem as me, while others are having much better results. Firehazard's situation and drain while not in use is pretty much in line with my expectations of the phone. With my old Tilt 2, I left WiFi and Bluetooth on all the time and still got great standby time out of the phone. When those connections weren't in use, they weren't really draining my battery in any way. I'm going to try to disable them though and see if that helps. I'll also try to monitor the battery usage screen and see how much power is going to wifi and bluetooth when I have them on.
I've been suspicious of my battery as well, tracking it casually today.
Took it off the charger approx 8:30am, immediately went to 99%.
Watching it over the last hour it appears to be losing 1% / 10 minutes.

Just using it for the past 5 minutes to write up everything running has dropped the battery almost 3%. Albeit I have terrible cell coverage where I am. It does seem that the cell and wifi receivers are a bit weak, or the meters are biased conservatively.
*edit* I want to be clear that I love this phone, I just want to try and find out what and if certain services/applications drain the battery and if not then if I have a bad battery.
Okay, so I turned OFF bluetooth and WiFi and checked the battery before bed and right when I woke up. This time, I lost 24% over 8 hours. Certainly a big improvement over 33% in 7 hours, but also no where near where my old Tilt 2 was. I would lose 2-3% overnight at the most with that phone. I checked the battery meter and the majority of the battery went to Cell Standby and Phone Idle. Those don't seem like things that can be avoided through tweaking. I was in an area with 3 bars of service (same as night before), so I don't think that was an issue.
I'm debating whether or not I should try a factory data reset. Some folks reported good results with that. I really don't feel like reconfiguring my whole device if there isn't a good chance for improvement. Maybe the GPS fix that's coming will help battery life?
Have you tried reconditioning the battery? That would be the charging/discharching cycles mentioned throughout the forum?
I have done it and my phone has been on standby for more than 24 hours and I am still at 50% battery. It's just had very light usage. Wifi on for about an hour, snapping a few pics, deleting some others. A bit of calc usage. When I first got it, my battery was dismal.
Mine hasn't been modded one bit yet, just installed some apps from the market and a weather widget.
Yes, tried that. It actually helped a little but I'm still getting poor results compared to some.
I have another theory/question. I use gmail as my only email account on my phone. Its set up through the system and it syncs to the gmail application on the phone. I also have it set up in the Samsung default email client (which I prefer). Am I wasting battery because the two apps are checking mail independently? Does the gmail account sync while the Samsung one checks at intervals (I have mine set to 1 hr)?

probably.
follow battery optimization guide in pimp my captivate.pdf thread. I get 1-2% battery consumption per hour with moderate to light usage.
heavy usage drops my battery about 4-5% per hour. By heavy usage I mean playing 3D games for hours str8

Obsessed with getting maximum battery usage for sensation

I would like to create a a definitive guide (best Practices) to get the maximum amount of battery out of the Sensation. Coming from a LG G2x I'm finding this battery is actually equal or worse and since rooting and removing bloatware currenty seems impossible, then customizing this phone has to be within the realm of stock apps and settings..
My Experience
Using Battery monitor widget, I'm typically getting -200 ~ -300 mAh usage whenever the phone is being used, it will drop down to -30 mAh at its lowest in idle, but no where like the G2x of 5-10 mAh or -2mAh for Vibrant (in idle)..
My goal is to have this phone last 24-36 hours regularly (if possible) ... Right now I'm getting 12-18 hours, with moderate use.. 20 ~30 minutes calls..
Here are the steps I've tried to improve life, in order or decreasing effect.
General Tips/Steps to imporve
Turn off All Syncing (use power widget to toggle as needed)
Check Settings >> Accounts & Sync >> [disable auto sync]
Set Screen timeout to 15sec
Set brightness to < 15%
Check Settings >> Power >> Turn on most or all the power saving features in this menu.
Remove (or reduce) number of widgets that need to poll data (includes clock/weather, stocks, social feeds, etc)
Turn off Bluetooth, GPS (when not needed, again use Power widget to toggle)
Enable Wifi calling (yes wifi calling saves battery especially in low 3/4G signal areas)
Use camera sparingly (by far biggest battery hog)
Useful apps or widgets
General apps / widgets and tips to have
Add Power widget to home page (for quick toggling)
Install Battery monitor widget for charting battery usage.
Juicedefender or Green Power from appstore and let them help manage power
Things to share
Please add your suggestions, and tell us your
max. battery time, between re-charges.

The best things I've found to improve battery life.. Use Juice Defender pro, and set schedules, let it turn off all the battery hogs...
Dam I wish I could remove the bloatware especially that Navigation package.
wow you are severely gimping your phone to get the most battery life. I'm happy with 12-14 hours with heavy usage

Umm... Why exactly do you have a smartphone if you are disabling every single thing that makes it a smartphone? If you want great battery life return the Sensation and buy a phone that does nothing but call and text.
Without disabling anything I am able to get through a 13 hour shift at work with texting all through and internet, youtube, etc during my breaks (~1-1.5 hours) with around 60-70% battery left. Then last week I used GPS with Navigation and screen brightness at 100 for the hour and a half drive home and I still had around 30% battery when I got home. (I was trying to kill the battery on the drive btw). I think all that is pretty damn good for a phone as powerful and with a screen as big as the Sensation.

Sorry but in all due respect this is the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Go buy a feature phone and it'll last as long as you need and do the same thing as your crippled Sensation.
I couldn't agree more. Why buy a smartphone if you are going to shut every single "smart" feature off. It isn't just the OP though. The manufacturers themselves recommend these kind of optimizations in their support pages.
Time to go shopping for a higher capacity battery...

edit: wow those faces look funny with no spaces between them. I think I'll fix that
I'm just going to enjoy my device features and let the battery drain...

Why have this phone if your gonna cut off its balls. Plug it in when you go to bed....enjoy your Sensation the way it was meant to be enjoyed.....
I get 12-16 hours with fairly heavy use... Fantastic for a device like this.

BOOM, just increased your battery life to 200%.
Keep one in your wallet, backpack, or wherever convenient.

Seriously, why not just actually use your phone and get a spare battery?
Turning brightness to the lowest setting works wonders. That's about all I've done, and I get 14 hours on average ...sometimes north of 17 hours. In general, if I get more than 12 hours out of my smartphone without disabling anything, I'm satisfied with that. 14, and I'm quite happy.
I tried Green Power free and while it seemed to help a bit, the difference for me was just too negligible to bother.
Just enjoy your for for now til you get sick of messing with it. After your sick of it, then start messing with the battery life. That will give something to do.

When I bought Sensation I was simply conciliated with that I will charge battery every single day. That´s it. Don´t buy a smartphone if you want it to last more than 1,5 day. Let´s stop with this battery obsession and start enjoying this great phone.
I tend to use the smartphone on the go, you know like a cell phone, so I'm not always near a charger, and a cell phone (after all that's one of the things a smartphone should do) typically should last a day or two, and I think its possible... but like anything else this battery hungry device can be guided to being a little more miserly in its power consumption... ..
Just looking for advice.. but I'll take the snarky comments...

Honestly if you want a smartphone and good battery life get a BB. That's the only thing I miss about my BB is the 2 day battery life. Honestly these phones are getting more and more powerful by the day and battery technology needs to catch up. IMO I think they should stop cranking out new phones every month and focus on researching better battery technology then crank them out every month It just seems like phone hardware keeps getting more and more power hungry and batteries are staying the same. I carry a little tiny blade folding charger with me or an extra battery. I tried to find the smallest folding charger I could so I could just throw it in my jeans pocket and not even notice it.
to the OP
to the OP, I like you, have not had the initial good fortune of our Sensation-al brethren. 14-17 hours is a pipe dream cuz my phone, after 4 days, BARELY got me 5 hours of light use. Since you actually asked a question, and were trying to be helpful to others who were/are in your same boat, I will give you what I did. I went from 5 - 9 hours without cutting the mythical "balls" off the phone. lol. Use if you like. (taken from another post).
"unless i am misreading, there are a lot of people with great battery life, but there does not appear to be any serious use of the phone. checking fb twice, a few texts, in standby for several hours and two calls will not put any real stress on it IMO and from my experience. So I really don't know if I can use a lot of examples that I am readings as a true gauge.
I waited to get this phone to use it in its entirety. I got frustrated the other day with my first post in this thread because I got hammered on battery life this weekend and I did NOT do anything and I barely got five hours. So I made a few adjustments (detailed below) and i can say that I am on 9 hours/ 20 mins on one charge. I have 18% battery left. My stats:
display 80% (3 hours / 12 minutes time on)
cell standby 9%
calls 4%
phone idle 3%
maps 2%
I text, sent picture mail, used maps (with gps on), had pulse, fb, twitter, gmail and friendcaster sync'd in the background, took several pics and uploaded them, used tap-a-talk to read xda posts, and facebooked. From 5 hours to 9 - I'll take it. I am still not where i want to be, but this is the first day that i felt good about having this phone as my primary device. I hope to get to upwards of 14 hours like i see here in this thread. to get here today i had to do several things to improve my odds.
1. i did not want the signal jumping around so WCDMA only
2. installed advance task killer and set it to "when screen off" and "crazy."
3. installed ultimate juice defender.
4. dropped screen brightness to 80%
I will continue to drain the battery to almost nothing and let it fully charge. I will report back any positive or negative results."

[Q] Moto G idle battery drain

Hi,
I have searched the forum for this and even though there are a number of cases they all seem different from this one. Instead of confusing matters more I decided to open a separate thread.
My Moto G (European version, en. DE, Android 4.4.2) so far had always been running for 7-10 days on a charge. Mobile data is off, GPS is off, data is off, WiFi is on only occasionally, no calls at all.
This has changed. My use is the same but the battery now drains at around 1.5-2% per hour, effectively cutting running time in half.
The only thing I (consciously) changed was to install SwiftKey. I have read that there have been issued like this with a previous version of it but that seems to have been fixed since 4.4 or so. Either way my other android device handles SwiftKey well so I am really not sure what might be causing this.
Of course I removed SwiftKey but that did not fix the problem.
The OS reports this battery usage: idle 35%, display 27%, cell standby 23%, Android system 5%, Android OS 3%.
Also I have no idea what kind of background update might have been made without me knowing it.
Do you have any idea what might be causing this? Is anyone of you experiencing the same issue?
What kind of battery do you have?

Just curious to find out what kind of battery do you have and where did you purchase it? It may be the new installation but hard to tell.

What kind of battery I do not know - I did not change anything on this phone and as far as I know the battery can not be removed. I bought the phone in early January 2014, it was one of the cost to be delivered and still had the previous android version (4.3?) back then.

Go to developer Options in settings and if you do not have this option then go to About Phone and tap 5 times on Build Date or number (should be last one) then go to "PROCESS STATS" which is under "ENABLE BLUETOOTH HCI SNOOP LOG" and when you are at process stats click on the three dots on top right and change the duration for 1 day and then you might be able to find the application that is running in the background constantly, mine is Facebook lol and Facebook Messenger....

From that i cant see anything but im sure that you are facing a wakelock from the qcamera2factory, you usually get this wakelock from apps such as Skype and Snapchat, force close these types of applications and hopefully you will get your great Battery life back. Those apps didnt allow me device to enter deep sleep so i was loosing a lot of battery life and to check if you have this wakelock you need root because of kitkat permissions but if you dont want to root then just force close those applications and wait a few days and test it out.

Just search wakelock detector on Play store and it should be the first application there. The qcamera2factory is a wakelock inside of the "Media Server" wakelock. Check how long your device has been on for and how much screen on time you have and compare to how long you have had deep sleep, if you have like 10 hours of on time and 1 hour of screen on time you should have about 9 hours of Deep sleep, if it is anything weird like 1 hour or 2 hours then you have something preventing your phone from deep sleeping.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector is this it ?
Hmm... No app like that (Skype etc.) is running on my phone. Could it be the camera app itself? Never had any issues with that before though.
My phone is not rooted. I just want to use it in place and not think about it too much. Researching which is the best path to root for Moto G was to mich for me back when I bought it and I have been happy with it or if the box - so far...
here was my stats after one night. kernel wakelock
CPU wake lock
in kitkat, wakelock policy was changed and you cant clearly see any system wakelock without root (i have tried many apps like wakelock detector and there is nothing to see in compare with Jelly Bean 4.3)
i had this annoying battery idle drain - it happened randomly, sometimes battery ran 7 days with light usage of phone but sometimes 30-40% was gone in 24 hours = 1-2%/h
i didnt have any apps installed like Skype, Facebook, or any other "keep awake" app - i also set up my gps, wifi settings, nothing helped
i also switched to ART runtime..again, didnt help
i decided to switch back to factory Jelly Bean 4.3 - you CAN flash stock ROM without unlocking bootloader (im locked without root) and now im running 4.3 with battery drain 0,1-0,4%/h in idle...battery life is now amazing - final battery drain is always ~0,6%/h (light usage)
im charging my phone from 30% to 80% and now it enough for 3 days ! for my 6h night it is only 1-3%
in background i have 3 apps running for battery monitoring (battery hd, batterydrain [analyser], gsam battery monitor) and few schedule apps...i disabled unnecessary apps like motocare and few other google/motorola apps
yes, im missing better alarm (kitkat), better RAM (now i have 60-100MB less...but if 380MB free or 460MB free...it doesnt matter for me) and some other little things that everything i can handle for MUCH MORE BETTER battery :good:
Mine drains 10% when it's in plane mode per hour...
But others days can last longer for at least 8-9 hours of screen time.
Is your phone running hot? I've had a problem with some custom kernels that caused my phone to run hot and drain fast without any visible signs.
this is after some time. im concerned by the second one on the list because it has Wheelock's at the end of name and it has x1441
I just rooted the thing and installed Greenify and GSam Battery Monitor. Now I'm down to 0,3-0,4%/h. That is fine for me.
It is a bit sad that it had to come to this but that is how the world works these days, I guess. Isn't it amazing how mch technology we can fit in these small packages?
0,3-0,4%/h is amazing !
im on 0,34%/h as final result now (BatteryDrain [Analyser])
yesterday i ended 5 days cycle on 53% battery i charged to 82% then with very light usage i need to charge after 5 full days (120 hours) on 29% (= no idle battery drain)
this idle battery drain is not hardware related, its issued by (stupid) KitKat - i really dont believe that it will be fixed in any next release (4.4.x or 5)
im enjoying JellyBean 4.3 much more than KitKat - all you need is flash stock system image WITHOUT unlocking bootloader/root/losing your warranty

Improve your Shield Tablet Battery Life

Hey there, guys.
I want to share with you my tweaks to get a better battery life while the tablet is on idle. [KitKat - Scroll down for lollipop update]
Processor state: Optimized.
Initial battery percent: 82%
Final battery percent: 45%
Battery percent loss: 37%
On Screen time: 1h 14m
Awake time: 1h 22m
Real awake time: 8 minutes.
Interval of time: 16h 55m
After many tests, I've notice that for every 10% of battery you get, at least, 30 minutes of Screen On. You can squeeze it even further to 40 minutes for every 10%
As you will see on the pictures, the WiFi was on for 10 hours, the rest was off because i went outside where WiFi was not available.

Now, the next screenshot will show you the "Partial wakelocks", they are the one that keeps your tablet awake. The lower, the better, but some of then are necessary while you work/play/surf on the tablet, so they will be there anywhere.
Trying to understand the Blake_wakelock.
I've spent some time trying to figure out how to stop this wakelock. The blake_wakelock is used by the "Shield Wireless Controller" nVidia system App to pair the controller; i don't know why it keeps alive after turn off the controller; so far the only not-brute-force method i have to stop it is by turning off the WiFi, also, in good conditions the blake_wakelock stop itself whilts screen is off. Once you turn it on again it comes back to life.

A list of what you need and What you don't need: The tweaks i'll show you is nothing more than disable many components that i don't need in some apps, for example, auto starts or syncing. Since i don't need location service, because i don't need my tablet to be with me all the time snaping pictures to instagram them and say "Hey, i am here, rapist", i don't need any of those, so, i disable everything related which is "safe" to disable.[/.]

I'll attach to this thread a backup of the service i have disable, you can "restore" it using Disable service to auto disable the service. It may work for you or may not, so that's why i'll list the service i have off.
In order to see how to disable a service using System Tuner and achieving a short explanation, here is a video i made months ago about it using another android device:

Normal User Applications:
I tend to look for service or activities/services/receivers such "Boot receiver", those trigger your app anytime your tablet boots up, keeping it awake. So, if you have an application that you enjoy and it auto start in background while you're not using it, you can disable those service and keep them calm.
I recommend SD Maid for detect autostart components and disable them easily using the "Toggle autostart components off/on". Indeed, if you keep using Facebook, you can control it by disabling a lot of trash services.

In addition, Freeze Gtalk and Google Plus; you'll still able to sign into Google play games by leaving the rest of the Plus services active (The ones that are not listed as disabled).
Done.
Lollipop Update:
After a week of testing, Lollipop seems to be battery friendly, for example, the Blake_wakelock is not a problem anymore, on this new update the service is triggered anytime is needed, and it's killed once you disconnect your Shield Wireless Controller.
Without any extra tweaks, all the services disabled above still working fine for Android 5, but some others are not safe to disable; for example, disabling the Youtube Auto-start services cause several Play Service crashes and it's almost unusable.
The next pictures will show you the battery life i got with those tweaks and plus my power setting profile: 2 cores and 50% Max Speed. (The same results with Optimized profile, it seems like the Power Saving mode is not working properly on this update)
On normal conditions (Web surfing, reading and watching videos on Youtube and similar) the battery lost percent is 5% for each 15 minutes.
As you can see next, after 42min on screen, i lost 10% of the battery.
The settings menu shows 20 hours left:
After 60% of the battery consumed, i got 2hours 53min on screen. The 36min of held awake were due downloading games in the background. By that time my Shield was on battery since 1day 3hours and 32min:
And with that said, the settings - Battery shows 19 hours left on Battery:
GSAM Battery monitor measurement:
You can find attached the list (*.txt file) of the services I've disabled, you can actually use this with Disable Service app, place the file into /storage/emulated/0/ and restore it, all the changes will be applied (Root is mandatory)
More results (January, 2015 update):
This is what i got recently. Bright to 30% or kinda more, Optimized power mode and gaming (Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders using iPega at maxed graphics, which is a battery eater with 10% of battery for every 15 minutes of game play - Stickman epic and GRID games). I'm rooted. Running OTA 2.0 Android 5.0
Starting from 93% to 28%; after 1 day and 12 hours, i found it at 82% (0.3% per hour) and a estimated of 13 days left:
So, after start playing demanding games, it went down quickly, still got a good life time expected on battery:
You can clearly see when i was playing:
Final measure (I don't like it goes under 40% or 20%
Obviously this tablet needs an improvement for future versions of it, with more power to offer a real good experience, but in my opinion, taking care of your battery will give you a good space to play with it.
Some disabled are trying unsuccessfully to achieve that by try and fail. Anyway...
I would like to see yours.
More results - Updated 01/10/2015
And even more! - Updated 23/01/2015
I just disabled these Google Play Services you mentioned, on my LG G2. Let's see...

[/list]

Indeed, if you keep using Facebook, you can control it by disabling a lot of trash services.

well done!!!!!
i wanna personally take the time to thank you for the effort put forth to find out the carp services we can eliminate to get our shields running balls out. i'll keep posting back no and then, just for s and g's and let ya know it's still kickin ass and throwing away the names.
ive also found (so far (fingers crossed)) that you can kill everything with "car" at the front under play services. i personally dont plan to use this beast in a car pretty much period, now im not a noob but this is a bit deeper than ive gotten on android (i used to do this kinda stuff for a livin on windows for years). but droid is a whole 'nother animal.
that said... thruth be told im homeless (lol)(no really) i spent a whole paycheck on my shield so i can game at camp. so thanks again for givin me a little more fun each day before i turn in.
i figure battery life and such falls under longevity so i thought i would post a bit here and more later to let ya know how all this keeps working on the road away from the grid and sometimes even a charging post.... (trees and tents dont have outlets)
that said... are there any OTHER things i can kill to get more life. and i mean the extreme stuff. i need NO location. no sync really unless i can tell it to myself (if i have only a few moments at a mcdonalds or sumfin to hit wifi i dont want it trying to sync and raping my batt)
how about apps? there are a ton i have no idea what is what. you have any clue what i can kill?
thanks again!!!!! blessed be

Hey there, dude. Glad it worked for you, and i'll be waiting for your results.
About disabling the car features, you might do it, but i think it wouldn't gives you a major impact on your battery life, or at least it was never an issue for me. Anyway, you can try and see if this gives you even more.
In order to keep my system "under control", what i do is disable the auto-start in some apps i don't need it, also the push messages for those apps. For example, anytime i installed a game, i use SD Maid (Simple way to do it) for overview the app, if there is an autostart feature i disable it.
Facebook and stuff related could be a problem, but then again if you cut off the service you don't need from them, you'll be safe.
Good thread. I already disabled the services using your backup text.
I got a question, though. How can I re-enable all those services I disabled?? That's in case if something weird starts to happen*
*For ex: Google Play Music started to annoy me with a notification.

To revert back you should follow the rule number one on XDA: Backups first. Or, as you used the *.txt i've attached (I'll upload a new one) you can undo by hand one by one of the services disabled, which are listed.
It's kinda strange the error you're getting, if you don't mind, please post an screenshot or tell me what it says and i'll try to reproduce it.
Take care.

Its not an error. More of an annoyance. I couldnt reproduce it but its something small haha.
It was a Google notification, the classic triangle with the ! and it said: "Service disabled. An app needs this service" and the app was Google Play Music
I did a backup txt before disabling services, so no need to worry. I hadnt had anything wrong apart from that small notification
But thanks for your concern and for the new txt

There are some pictures in the first post which show a battery life of about 2 days and 5 hours on screen. I do gaming sometimes and for long part of the day my tablet is on standby.
All depends the use you givento the tablet, a sustained use with optimized mode will not give you more than 6 hours on screen with low brightness, and with battery saver mode it could be more; neverthelesse you will not get 12 hours or 24 in screen with this device, just because the battery is tiny.
First post updated with the *.txt file lollipop based.
If you're having problems importing the file with Disable Service, just open the txt file and with the app of your choice, disable the services listed.
Greetings.
this may help you dude

Can you update this for MM?

Standby drain

When you sleep, does your phone sleep, or does it stay up all night and crunch 1s and 0s? Rate this thread to express how you deem the speed at which the Xiaomi Mi 5's battery drains under standby conditions. A higher rating indicates that when the phone is not in use, the battery drains minimally.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
If anyone could post the standby drain overnight it would be great. I would like to know how much % is lost during night time....
This one is from mine:

It's 20% over 9 hours, so it's around 2% per hour. Everything is still on: sync (3 email accounts, 7 social media apps), wifi, bluetooth, etc.
I'd really like help with this area, if anyone can give me any advice. If I charge my phone to 100% at night then unplug it, when I wake up in the morning it's down to less than 50%. This is with pretty much nothing on, no wifi, data, bluetooth etc. This happens most of the time, but not all the time (when it doesn't I can get a few days of use out of the phone), and I've yet to identify and fix the exact cause.
Haven't empirically tested, but I seem to get more battery life when in continual use (listening to music off and on, etc), then when resting overnight/for long periods.
I can give any details needed, but I'm using Cyanogenmod 13.0-20160908. Have tried Doze, and GSam (can post any logs if I know what's useful), and Wakelock detector. Would changing roms help?

Hi Khazidhea,
I can tell for sure that it is NOT NORMAL that your phone drains about 7 to 8% of battery life each hour !
Especially if you disconnect Wi-Fi and BT.
The only thing I can think of, is that you are in an area where the phone constantly switches from 3G to 4G to get on the network.
Of course, if you have 2 SIM cards in that phone, that may increase the drain significantly...
I think that if you are on Cyanogen, there is an option in Settings that is called "SIM Cards".
If you select that option, you should be able to have some access to settings for each SIM Card.
Try to select one and look for the option called "Preferred Network" and select something like "WCDMA" or "GSM" (that is 2G in the US and 2G in Europe).
See if that improves...
As far as I am concerned, I run my Xiaomi mi5 with a ROM called "Tipsy-OS" that I have compiled myself...
So far, I am unplugged since 2 hours, have used the phone with 4G, BT, Wi-Fi, automatic updates of apps, mail retrieving, applied themes via substratum... and lost 2%.
So no, 8%/hour without doing anything is NOT NORMAL !
Regards.
I finally ended up fixing this. Simply changing the setting "Preferred network type" from 4G to 3G made my battery usage change from about 2/3 of a day, to up to 4 days, with my typical pattern of usage. Note that when my battery was being drained before I did not have data turned on, so not sure why that ended up being the fix.

If 4G coverage is bad in your area, it will trigger reconnection over and over again, causing battery drain. The protocol itself is indeed more battery consuming in general, but shouldn't have much gap with 3G under the same coverage quality.
% 5 full network bltooth
seems mine 1-2%per hour all sync on, wifi.

I can confirm same here LOS airplane mode = 0am till 6am 100% to 98 or 97 % so at max decrease a 1/2% an hour.
In a non-airplane mode with WiFi connected I get a bit more than 1%/h with greenify activated.
I posted in another thread but i've got no answer.
I decided to switch to Global Dev ROM thinking it might solve my battery issues, but it only got worse, im getting around 40% battery drain overnight. Any ideas???? I don't have mi sync enabled, google play is set to not auto-update apps, i barely use mobile data, so only wifi.

Official Global Dev, so i noticed that "Lite Messenger Facebook" was draining the battery like h3ll, i uninstalled it and now i've been using my phone for an entirely day browsing/email/duolingo and half battery has gone, the way it is going i will have to charge every 2 days or so. In the meantime i might just use facebook messenger through the browser.
Although Global Dev is fine, there are some bugs and MiFit does not want to sign in, i might go back to Global Rom when 8.2 comes out to Mi5.
Thank You!
