[Q] will this work without rooting - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I didn't see a thread relating.
so my dilemma is i bought a galaxy tab 2 10.1 3g version off eBay unknowing it had the china rom installed... most of the Google apps arn't there and kies doesn't work.
i saw this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1686514
and was wondering if i can just do the first steps of istalling the ROM without having to root it as i dont want to void the warranty. and also is this ROM the international ROM??? many thanks in advance.

yes you can just do the first step without proceed to flashing custom recovery and rooting
however, you should know that firmware flashing via Odin will result to flash binary counter increased, so technically your device will lose warranty as well...

I doubt Samsung will honor your warranty
I have an american purchased p3113 and was informed by their online support for warranty it can only be honored if picked up from an address in the country of purchase. You could log in to the samsung support site to verify your warranty situation if it concerns you.

why's it void my warranty

flash binary counter is what samsung use as mechanism to detect flashing firmwares without using official tools provided by samsung ota or via samsung kies... also as their alibi not to be held responsible if consumer modified/upgrading without official tools...
ok, here's a good thing, i've heard & read from users experience in forums, blogs & my own friends have their samsung devices sent to back to samsung centers & got their warranty claims granted even with rooted or flash binary counter increased... more about luck i guess... :fingers-crossed:

im guessing theres no way around it? thats definately lucky, probably comes down to if its hardware problem or program problem to whether or not they need to check it.

as for now for our device, i can only say there is no other way

Thats the worst

Dude...your knox warranty is ok.It should be 0x1 if is voided.
Do not root at this time.it will void your warranty.Wait for some knox friendly root method.Anyway...my i9505 had knox status 0x1 and i had it replaced in warranty (by Orange Romania) for a faulty display.

Its true what hes says ---> if you care Root dont Flash 4.3 Firmware!!!
I tested it.
If you root with 4.3 you got mass "Knox alert messages" in android !!!!! and you void Knox warranty to 0x1 in bootloader!!!!
The other thing you can not use anymore Heimdall or Odin(dont support 4.3 firmwares!!!!!) to flash anything on your phone also kies 2.6 you can not use anymore ..............have to update to 3.2 .... <--- everything tested!!
After i recognized theres nothing to do on this "super 4.3 firmware" i tried in terminal with abd shell dd commands to downgrade the Bootloader to go back 4.2.2 and what is the result ^^ -->
Phone is now hardbricked got only blackscreen nothing boots up !!! and i am using now a Nokia 3710 Fold till 30.12.2013 then i get rechanged my I9506 by a new one from servicecenter....
Again if you need root and dont want "knox warranty void" in your Bootloader STAY ON 4.2.2 !!!
Sorry for Caps

Sure i can help you but you want really this 4.3 with "knox warranty void" in Bootloader ??
With odin and heimdall you cant flash 4.3 ... not supported!!
So if you dont care i can advice you how you update to 4.3 just do a post with text in it "yes help me please"
And dont blame if you want go back to 4.2.2 after updated to 4.3 .... cause its not possible by normal methods ... only with JTAG i think you can downgrade to 4.2.2 !!!

hello, have you found a solution to this? if you have please provide it, i got the same atm. Thanks
While on 4.2.2, try to flash in Odin only following 3 parts: boot (don't mess with aboot!!), cache, system. Don't flash any other parts.
There parts are enough to fully upgrade to android 4.3.
It's better to avoid flashing modem from 4.3 because it has KNOX enabled bootloader image inside and may update it at any time by itself.
Probably, you won't be able to boot android with stock boot.img because of LKM authentication, but you may try. It won't brick your device. If you won't flash any other (except these 3) parts, then you always can boot into download mode and flash 4.2.2 parts ad still don't have any KNOX mentions in download mode.
Most likely, you will need custom kernel (boot.img) in order to continue to use old bootloader with android 4.3.

Since i have no clue about what you mean by only flash three parts, i got one file and one file only, its a .md5. ho do i just flash some parts of it if even possible? and im not even sure i should flash that file since it's 4.3.
i would like to be pointed in the direction of a step to step help thingy, like i require this, and when i got it, do this. Thanks
I flashed 4.3 and rooted to get my secmms out then flashed 4.3 again via Odin and no problems. Well my knox warranty is void but I don't give a damn. Des will find something for that.

[Q] Rooted and Tripped KNOX - Some Questions?

Rooted my S5 (took several tries to root and get CWM recovery). Tried MOAR ROM but didn't like it so flashed back to my nandroid backup of rooted stock ROM. My Knox counter now reads 0x1(4). I understand warranty is voided, but I bought the phone on Ebay, so probably no warranty anyway.
Does 0x1(4) mean Knox has seen 4 flashes? does this matter?
Is there a Knox limit to number of times phone can be flashed?
Other than voided warranty, any other issues now that Knox is tripped, or can I keep flashing ROM's till I find one I like?
How much trouble can I get into doing this, or will I always be able to use CWM recovery to recover my initial backup?
Thanks, and apologies if these have been asked.

To my knowledge the knox flag is just letting a repair service provider know that your warranty is void. the number next to it is a flash counter, flash away to your hearts content you will not damage your phone flashing unless you really try. You cant get into any trouble.
If I'm not mistaken, hasn't a knox reset been solved on other phones? Is it just a matter of time before someone finds the solution for S5?
I wish I could pass on to EVERYONE at once about Knox...
I bought a Sprint S5 at Best Buy. I also bought Best Buy's insurance, but kept the Assurion insurance just in case.
Already had to bring the phone to Best Buy(Geek Squad looked at it) because of a GPS issue. I have MOAR Rom on it, Rooted/Lucky Patched/Busyboxed, Custom recovery....the works. The Geek squad guy chuckled, asked what my XDA screen name was, and mentioned that since he got a S4, many guys had wondered where Rompnit(MOAR's dev) had gone to. The S3 days were awesome for all.
Best Buy doesn't care about Knox......and Assurion REALLY doesn't care about Knox.

Clarification on flashing original firmware

I have a galaxy s6 bought from malaysia and it was region locked. I initially thought it will be easy to unlock but I couldnt unlock it so I took it to local mobile service center. There they unlocked the phone. I dont know how they unlocked it but I think he used some box like octoplus. When I recieved the phone from him it was rooted and the knox counter was tripped.
I know I have voided the warranty but thats fine. Now I dont recieve any updates from Samsung. I want to flash the original samsung firmware back and I have the following clarification before doing it by myself.
1. If I flash the original samsung firmware using smart switch or odin will the phone be unrooted and will I start receiving updates
2. Currently in my smart manager-> device security it says security threat found and I get the notification "unauthorized action detected restart your device to undo any unauthorized changes". Will this error message go off and will the device threat go off.
3. Will installing My knox cause any problem or I should avoid installing it ?
4. Currently "In find my mobile" remote controls is not getting enabled. Will the find my mobile feature start working after flashing the official firmware.
Thanks in advance

if you have tripped knox to 1 then the warranty is voided. you can't unvoid it. furthermore, malaysian SGS6 are G920F, which is supposed to be international unlocked versions. where did you buy this in malaysia? i hope it's not low yat or some shady place.
Yes its G920F. All Samsung galaxy phones are region locked irrespective of where its bought. I dint buy in low yat. But I just curious why you are skeptical about low yat ?. Is low yat not a good place to buy ?
I know I have voided the warranty but I want to know the answer to the above questions

you should try installing the official firmware through smart switch first. then slowly work on the rest. use emergency firmware initilization.
2. i'm not sure.
low yat can sell you at a cheap price, but i have had friends who had been conned of several things there before.
I am sure many would have tripped Knox and flashed stock firmware and you must be having answers to my clarification. Can anyone help me by answering my questions

bro, i suggest you try installing Smart Switch on your PC, then click more at the top right hand corner, click emergency firmware initialization > Device initialization > Key in SM-G920F > key in your Serial number > click okay (make sure to back up first) then install the latest firmware. That should unroot your phone. The rest of the questions you asked, may be fixed after you unroot your phone

To Root or Not to Root

Hello Community!!
I have owned many androids over the years, and have recently got an S6, hoping to dive back into the game of rooting, modding and messing around until my phones works the way i want it to. There are MANY things that really Piss me off about my T-MObile variant of the S6, including the horrible battery life, bloatware, and lack of personality. I Really would love to root my device, but KNOX. OMG what is this?! If i Root, no Samsung pay? What other downsides are there to rooting? But recently, my phone installed "ANdroid Pay" SO I am thinking, I should just root, forget Samsung pay and just use Google pay or whatever they call it.
As you guys can tell from my sig, I have been very inactive on these forums. I am hoping someone can give me some advice here---
Thanks So much

There are pros and cons to root.
The first pro is limitless customizations and personalizations.
The first con is OTA updates get disabled.
Another pro is you are able to dramatically improve battery and overall performance using various apps.
Another con is your warranty will be void, assuming you tripped KNOX.
If you trip KNOX, Samsung Pay no longer works; if you have root (even without touching KNOX) Android Pay does not work.
I obtained root just to prove to myself it could be done.
Since then there have been dramatic improvements with speed and battery life.
Package Disabler Pro can freeze a lot of the bloatware without root: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpro&hl=en
Hi,
It's a highly personal decision. I myself for the first time am holding on rooting - I was the one who made the most famous Xoom rooting tool and also S4 Linux Root Script, so that tells a lot. The thing is, meanwhile my device is satisfying my needs, and I'm really curious about Samsung Pay, as it has a way wider support than Android Pay and other systems.
The best thing about rooting in my opinion was the endless system customization - specially after Xposed was released. The way better data management I had, better system control and some exclusive apps that require root or works better with root. If you are really pissed about Samsung TouchWiz apps and system "features", rooting would be a nice idea. Just keep in mind that after rooting Knox will be tripped and there's no turning back with Knox. Depending on your country, Knox trip also means warranty void, because once rooted you can unroot and make it looks like nothing happened.
Just adding what was already said, but Android Pay doesn't work with root.
All the best,
~Lord

Rooting doesn't allways mean tripped knox. I have my G920F rooted and knox intact. This can be done even after updrade to 5.1.1 stok firmware.
An android phone for me is worthless without root permissions. I need it for:
adaway adds
iptables (firewall)
better battery life (debloat)
titanium backup

Just install de 5.0.2 engineering bootloader via ODIN. Then instal TRWP via ODIN.
After this two steps you can flash whatever you want via TRWP.
Edit: with the 5.0.2 bootloader you will loose fingerprint scanner, the rest works great, at least with the custom rom I am using.

Keep in mind this engineering bootloader does not work with all variants. For example there is no Eng Bootloader for the Canadian phones.
Thank you both. I have the international SM-G920F (technically it's the dual Sim version, SM-G920FD, (from United Arab Emirates)).
So, to confirm, would the eng boot loader still work on my device variant, and allow root without tripping KNOX?

I have the single sim version of the G920F, so I don't know if it will work with the dual sim.
I don't think that it will strip you knox...
... and I think that if your phone doesn't work with this bootloader, you can just flash the correct one and make it work again.
But these are just guesses... you decide if you want to take the risk.
Good luck.

Hi,
I wouldn't risk that "you can just flash the correct one and make it work again". If you know how a bootloader work, if it gets broken there is no way to get to Download Mode and flash a new firmware/bootloader.
For information sake, a bootloader is a piece of software that is the first thing loaded when you boot your device, it comes before anything, be it kernel, be it recovery or anything else, that means, if you have a broken bootloader, the moment you try to boot your device up, it will try loading BL and it will fail, so it will shut down back again. I've had a broken BL once before on S4, the only way to recover was a direct flash of software in system chip using a tool called JTAG.
So, all I can say to users who still didn't get it: beware with this. It seems that many people are getting successful results, but it's an extremely risk procedure, make sure you read every single instruction and follow it, the possibility of a hard brick is high.
Even still, it's a great find, thanks for sharing with me, I didn't know of this until early today .
All the best,
~Lord
I wonder whether Samsung pay will work again after reflash stock rom after root? Is it like knox, once rooted you will never have it no mater what you do including going back to pure stock?

Or the unrooting will only help to restore the stock but the knox will continue to remain tripped. I would like to know this as I am considering purchasing S6. The last samsung phone I owned was S2 and used that for 3 full years with out any problems.
Thanks.

Once Knox is tripped its tripped but, yes you can flash original firmware and as long as you factory reset it, it will be unrooted and ready for official updates.

Thanks. But can you be a bit more specific of if the unrooting, flashing stock, and factory resting will finally untrip the tripped Knox as well? My question in the event I need to take this back to a service center to claim warranty for whatever reason, is there any way for them to know that I have voided warranty if I unroot, flash back the stock and factory reset?

Once tripped there is no going back. Voided warranty depends on laws of your country and your retailers policy.

YOU CAN NOT UNTRIP KNOX, you can reflash your firmware from Sammobile, http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G920F/
use odin and then after you flash, go into recovery or use system settings and conduct a factory reset. It will say Official in the status but, since they will reflash your rom anyways, they will see the knox trip.
It depends on where you purschased your device whether or not they will warranty it with Knox tripped.
Honestly, anyone who roots should understand this information before hand. You should always know how to return to stock unroot.

I wonder whether Samsung pay will work again after reflash stock rom after root? Is it like knox, once rooted you will never have it no mater what you do including going back to pure stock?

After rooting my 5.1.1 without tripping Knox, with the 5.0.2 engineering bootloader (as as described a few posts ago) I have flashed a stok rom with odin and then everything went back as it was before the rooting procedure.
1. I was on stok oficial rom with oficial bootloader.
2. I lost root.
3. Knox was still intact: 0.
4. Fingerprint scanner and MyKnox worked again.
So: after upgrade to 5.1.1, rooting with the 5.0.2 engineering bootloader seems to be safe and also easy to bo back to stock... at least for my model (G920F)

Update 5.1 ROM for Note 3 SM-N900 Exynos Processor

I am new to this custom ROM kind of things.
I am user of Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900 Exynos Processor. bought from India.
What i want to do is changing my ROM with some latest ROM. like either NOTE 4 or NOTE 5 ROM.
Is it possible?
I have heard that by doing this process Knox Flag may be tripped. and Tripped KNOX flag means warranty is void. SO can it be untripped ever ?
Also before starting any kind of this process, samsung executive suggested me to take a full recovery of existing OS. SO how i can do that ?
Anyone can guide me step by step process to achive this? and pls explain me in brief so i can get some clear vision.
Thanks a lot in advance.
There are some note 4 and note 5 port's available for the n900. Flashing any rom or rooting will trip Knox and destroy ur warranty. Do not listen to samsung support. They do not support customization of your software aND usually provide bad advice. If you want to flash the custom rom,you need a custom recovery and root. Good luck.
Thanks. Is there any good Custom Rom along with steps of Custom Recovery, root and flashing it?

First of all, this is a wrong section mate, you can ask questions in Q&A section(for Exynos too)
About your questions:
Yes, there are ROMs which will make your note 3 similar to Note4/5 in terms of functionality.Aurora Team S6/Note5 Full Port For Note 3
Yes, this process will trip your knox counter, but you can reset it (only for Exynos as of now). step by step guide
(i have tried it, also claimed warranty after resetting knox )
To take full recovery(a full backup, not recovery) you first have to ROOT(Guide) your phone and install custom recovery (Guide)(till this step your OS is as it was) and then take a full-OS-backup through recovery.
It's better to go through the theories in the forums, but if you want a to-the-point guide, message me

I did CF-AutoRoot first.
Then phone started but OS was not working properly and KNOX flag was tripped. So i just untripped that flag. using the link you provided.
The KNOX warranty is again back to 0. so it means that flag is changed successfully.
But OS is not starting.
Currently my phone is on download mode. It is showing
Current Binary: Custom
System Status: Custom
KNOX Warranty VOID: 0
AP SWRV: A0
HW REV: 11
DDR SIZE: 3G(0x2020)
BUILD VERSION: HA3GZS_TEST
BINARY SBOOT VERSION: VERSION_+A4
DEVICE MODEL NAME: SM-N900
EMIC PNM:032GE4
Will installating a Stock ROM resolve my issue?
Yes installing stock would reset every thing. ..phone will work
My friend you should make factory wipe after flashing root file for the first time and do not untrip the knox counter.
Im india the service centre people don't see your knox warranty unless you tell them that you tampered the device.
I got my full body replaced even when my knox was 0×1
