Cell phone hooked up to Wifi adapter - General Questions and Answers

Hey all, i havent been on this fourm in awhile and I thought Id come on here to talk about an idea i have. Iv been looking for a way to have a better wifi signal on my phone, not just at home but also for public wifi spots. Then i thought of those usb Wifi adapters you can hook into your computer. Is it possible to use your cell phones usb charging cord and plug a wifi adapter into it and increase your cell phones wifi capabilities. I have a new samsung galaxy note , so i was hoping that this phone would be able to do the job. This phone is like a mini computer so i am considering trying it but just wondering if anyone else has had success with this or has any opinions.

a mod on the phone would also be required

usb connection with pc suddenly dead

Hello suddenly my nexus s stopped connecting with data with the pc it only charges, tried with 3 diffrent computers with diffrent os , no menu popping on nexus and nothing connected on the computer(like i didnt connect anything), i removed the battery left it for some time installed stock rom still nothing. It was acting normally for a second and the other it stopped any help appreciated!
Are you sure you're using the cable that came with the phone? I have an LG Wink featurephone here that uses the same connector at the phone end -- its cable will charge my Nexus S (using the computer, obviously, but also when used with either the LG or Samsung charger) but no USB connection happens when I use it. Only the cable that came with my Nexus S provides a USB connection when I connect to the computer. I guess there are pinout differences between the two cables.
If you're sure you're using the right cable, I would guess that it's gone bad if it doesn't work on any computer. You can buy an (overpriced) replacement from Samsung or maybe a cheaper one on eBay or at a retail store. If the latter, be sure the seller lists it as compatible with the Nexus S.
it happened with the original cable ppfff i dont know...
same problem

Hi
I have the same problem
I have no idea what the problem could be.
We are not alone with this problem: code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=13553
Now installed stock rom as well but still the same problem.
If i starting the NS in the bootloader mode the phone is not recognized by the computer.
It would be great, if someone knows a solution!

I've been trying to get help with this for weeks. No one is even responding to my posts. I thought it was something OBSURDLY simple, such that people didn't even want to waste their time responding to me.
Seeing same problem, No connetion via USB
Posted problem in General,, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104245
Tried different cords, different computers and operating systems,, did cold start several times on phone (removed battery) still no luck, I am running totally stock
Curious do any of you have the Google Music Beta?? (maybe a over zealous rights thing?)
just tried it with a Win 7 machine that had never seen it before and it said it could not recognize the device,, me thinks that the MS device driver DB is messed up buy some recent Win update??
i sent it to samsung to change my usb slot because after connecting to pc and nothing happen when i went to charge the phone it took 5 hours to get to 30% so iam almost sure that mini usb slot malfunctions

My phone charges just fine. And my USB connectivity was fine until I manually installed 2.3.4.
~I had usb connection problems after upgrade to 2.3.4 a bit different but I managed to get the USB back by formatting the SD card.

I was on 2.3.3 when this happened, i tried to flash 2.3.4 then and again it didnt work but the strange thing is that when i was moving the mini usb the first times up and down it was shown for a moment as a broken usb device. Then this stopped and was not shown at all on the computer and finally the phone charged super slow when connected to electricity
Beginning to believe that it is a physical prob with USB connector on phone. It seems to start/stop charging when wiggling usb on phone but no mounting. Doe anyone know best way to resolve , T-mobile but bought from Best Buy? so to Best Buy? FOR SUPPORT /EXCHANGE? suggestions?
I've seen loose connections before. My suggestion ain't the cheapest but the plug, on the cable end, shouldn't wiggle. I went to a corporate sprint store, the ones that actually have working display phones, and got their usb to micro usb data cable. The thing with that cable is when you plug it in the phone side, it goes into the jack firmly. You can almost feel the little locking tabs click into place. There should be no play or wiggle with that cable as long as there's no damage or abuse with the jack on the phone. IMO, that's a good data cable. It's never given me problems before.
Also, sometimes the cable is only wired for charging. A true data cable will be wired correctly and be able to both charge and transfer data. Usually the cables that come with the phone are crap quality. I don't know if my suggestion will help but it won't hurt to have a good cable for data transfer and flashing. The last thing you want is a flaky connection from a cheap cable when you're flashing roms. Russian roulette with bricking a phone in a worse case situation.
Did you try reboot the computer and the phone? How about a different usb port? How about unplug any other usb device in case it's conflicting for some unknown reason? It sounds like so many people with windows 7 are having problems. Usually always happens with a new os that's released. Xp, for flashing devices and programming different hardware devices, has never given of a problem. I have a small partition with xp on it just for that purpose only.
off to Samsung for repair for me...
After time on phone with them and a factory reset belief is that the usb connector is defective. BTW Best Buy just hands off to Samsung 1-800 #
So Back to a barely functional G-1 for a while, glad I could find it!
So is Samsung or the carriers replacing or fixing units?
My USB data died shortly after 2.3.4 ota update.
Wifi FTP is fine for data transfer but I want USB debug to work...
Shame on google and Samsung, this bug has been around for months.
no shame on anyone...
I went through a factory reset with Samsung on phone that isolated the problem to what is apparently a loose usb connector, nothing to do with software... only hassle is sending it in for repair, as` mentioned problem needs to be dealt with Samsung customer service (not carrier or Best Buy), they were fine on phone...

using g2x to bridge wifi (is it possible)

is it possible to use this phone to bridge my neighbors wifi signal in to my house?i have his permission to use it.in fact i put the router in his house and give him ten bucks a month.i can only pick up his wifi in my daughters room and garage.any apps or anything?
If you mean you want to have WiFi data in AND WiFi tethering out, no its not possible. As far as I understand it, WiFi tethering essentially turns your WiFi receiver into a transmitter, and both can not be active at the same time.
You could just get a range extender and put it in your garage or your daughters room, that would boost the signal in your house
Personally I've never liked those range extenders. While there is no way that I'm aware of to do it with the g2x, it can easily be done with a few pieces of network equipment. Get yourself a wireless ethernet bridge, and put it in your daughter's room. Connect it to the wireless network, and plug a wireless access point into the bridge.
Not a cheap or elegant solution, but it should definitely work.

yeah i was just looking to do a free-be way if it was possible.i know about the range extenders but never thought about your idea..why dont you like wireless bridges/range extenders?
I don't like them either but its a simple solution, I've tried them before and they seem to lose connection randomly.
Now I'm not 100% sure of this, but I think you could do this with a wireless router running custom firmware (DD-WRT).
Wireless router picks up the signal and bounces it back out. Maybe it's worth looking into

maybe if you have a usb wifi adapter set up a ad hoc connection then go back to network and sharing click on adapter settings then sharing and shared it with the usb wifi adapter thats one way to doing it

3G or 4G USB dongles that work with the Surface R

I am looking to buy a 3G or 4G USB dongle to use with the Surface RT...
Can anyone confirm if they have a 3G or 4G USB dongle working with their Surface RT?
Can you confirm Dongle modle number as well please?
I am interested in this as well. AT&T LTE specifically.

The ones that will work are those with NDIS 6.3
Anyone happen to have the Sierra Wireless AirCard 313U to test out on a Surface?
Google for Netzero4g 4G hotspot. I think that so far that type of device are going to be the only option.
My Clearspot works well.
I really need an AT&T solution. Anyone test anything? I am tethering via my iPhone 5 right now, but want to get away from that.
Why not look into the "mobile hotspot" type devices as opposed to a USB dongle. All of them will be compatible being that you only connect to it via WiFi. Much more convenient since you don't have to plug it in to anything.

[Q] Nexus 5 and USB-Ethernet

Is the Nexus 5 able to connect to ethernet via some USB-RJ45 adapter without any tweaking like Nexus 7 and so? or otherwise it needs some minor tweeks? or its totally impossible to get ethernet connection in this phone without HUGE changes?
Thank you in advance.
Anyone?

I just tried it and no go. I did get it working on my N7, but I'm not sure at this point if a similar tweak will get it going on the n5 or not.

probably because the kernel for n5 doesn't have the driver module, while n7 kernel has it?
have a usb 3.0 ethernet dongle and Y cable... will try it, and maybe compile and modprobe the module if necessary
EDIT: /proc/kmsg recognises my device as a ax88179 usb 3.0 ethernet chip when connected, but that's about it for now... no lights flashing on the NIC (I am using a powered USB Y cable, so it should be working), no ifconfig/network changes

+1 im actually surprised that theres such a thing as microusb to ethernet.
I actually got a microusb to 10/100 ethernet adapter to try this. To answer a previous question, sometimes when traveling hotel wifi is awful or spotty but they have a serviceable ethernet port. Wifi hotspot from cellular on roaming data is unacceptably expensive and there's no wifi mirroring support that I know of that would let you find a spot in a room with a Wifi signal and mirror it to the rest of the room. So if you can connect the phone by ethernet as in internet source then share that through wifi or bluetooth hotspot you have a convenient mini router in your phone.
In any case, when I tried it the adapter seems to get power, it lights up and the light flashes when I connect it to my network but if I disable the wireless radios on the phone it gets no internet access. Are there drivers we can install that would enable this?

Why not? Just in case of hotels with no wifi or other strange situations. If you travel a lot, you will find them, and ethernet is everywhere.. wifi isn't.

Yeah, I got it to work stock on the nexus 7 (I think its because Asus puts the drivers for all their tablets) and it doesn't work on nexus 5.. damn.

I'm really sorry about reviving this super duper old thread, but this is the first Google result for "nexus 5 ethernet" (without quotes). I just want to report that on my Android M developer preview Nexus 5, ethernet does indeed work out of the box without needing root. I suspect it should also work in Lollipop but I haven't tested it (supposedly ethernet on the Nexus 5 was added then).
You can see in that image my phone accessing my router's admin page, which is blocked on WiFi and is only accessible over ethernet.
I'm using this microusb to ethernet adapter:

I'm glad you did revive the thread. I just plugged the "pluggable" brand micro usb to ethernet adapter that I've used with a Nexus Player successfully into my Nexus 5 on M preview 2. It works. It shows a little ethernet status icon in the status bar. However, there doesn't seem to be any way to customize the settings. Like switch it from DHCP to a fixed address. Any idea if that's possible??
As a side note, plugging in the Chromecast ethernet/power combo into the Nexus 5 will charge, but is not recognized as an ethernet network.

HELP!! USB Wifi router directly connecting to an android phone.

Hello!
I have a Xiomi Note 3 (SD) Special Edition (Kate). Accidentally I dropped my device and it got broken. I have already replace the display and including to this replacement, everything is going good apart from the Wifi and Bluetooth. I assumed this to be software issue but trying so many tricks from different threads I found it to be a hardware issue at last. Anyway, now my question is as mobile data is not a cost effective solution, so to use this phone in my house using my in-house broadband wifi, can I use a USB wifi adapter/router (Xiaomi mini USB Router) to be connected via OTG cable as an alternative to my phone's non working wifi?

You can probably use a USB dongle that has WiFi and Bluetooth capability, similar to this:
https://m.alibaba.com/product/60571...ni.html?spm=a2706.7843667.1998817009.7.zTQNFa
You will need an OTG adapter but your device has to have the hardware and software to support OTG. I've used these on PC but not sure how it's used on android so there may be compatibility issues depending on the types of devices that the dongle supports.
If your home WiFi router has a 5Ghz network then you'll need a dongle that supports dual band, otherwise you won't be able to connect to 5Ghz, you'll have to use a 2.4Ghz network.
I DO NOT PROVIDE HELP IN PM, KEEP IT IN THE THREADS WHERE EVERYONE CAN SHARE
