[Q] Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 UNROOT HELP! - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First off, I am unfamiliar with any ADB terms used on these forums.
What I did:
I rooted my Tab 2 (GT-P5113) using Odin and everythng worked out fine. Then I wanted to install a custom rom so I used Titanium Backup to back up my information. The directory com.titaniumbackup was on my SD card, but contained no files. I would think it may have cancelled the backup without me knowing.
I then did a NANDroid backup but I have no idea what happened to it. I then downloaded and succesfully installed CleanRom, but now I realized rooting isn't really what I thought, and is much more complicated, so I removed the cleanrom.zip from my SD. The CleanRom however is still on my system.
Is there ANY type of factory reset that will give me how my tablet was before? Unrooted?

If you go back to the backup/restore section where you made the backup and click on restore you should be able to restore your device with the backup it made. Unzipping the clean ROM should not have deleted the backup. The backup file will have the date you created it. From that point you should have the stock ROM. Then from there you can use Odin to unroot device by following the post in the development area of this forum.
Hope that helps - Let me know

HELP

So, I purchased my Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate) last weekend. I had it rooted and everything was fine. Then I got rid of some of the bloatware. I wrote a couple of programs for myself to use, so I needed to enable side-loading. I did that-successfully.
First sign of a problem was when I went to the marketplace and it would not download any single app that I tried. So, I went to restore the phone using the backup I made, but some reason it wasn't there.
Then I decided to revert to factory settings. I did a hard reset, but the problem was still not resolved. Then I found a thread on here about Odin 3. I've been trying to use that all night but the best I've gotten is to the File Analysis step. I've tried at least 10 different times.
I'm trying to get everything back up and running and preferably rooted again so that I can use my Titanium backup to restore all my apps and settings.
I'm at my wits end, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Factory reset would not solve any problems that may have been caused by deleting core apps. Is your phone rooted and nand unlocked (baseband) or just rooted? Are you running a custom rom? If so you need to reflash the rom after clearing cache and dalvik cache. If you still have the original rom then you can reflash an official samsung firmware using odin, look for your handsets firmware on www.samfirmwares.com
Other than that you could try finding out which apps are needed and using root explorer you may be able to fix the version you have. If the market is your only issue then try clearing data and cache settings/manage apps/market and download manager (two different apps)
How did you root your phone? Did you install a custom ROM yet? What bloatware did you remove, and how did you go about it?
Ok. In the wee hours this morning I finally got Odin to work and now everything works as it should. I switched computers and the program worked right away. Intersting tidbit though, I accidentally left the sim card in during the reflash and I had no ill effects. I'm actually wondering if that helped me.
Thanks tina333.
nenol, I used the one touch root. I have not installed a custom rom and I don't remember exactly which of the programs I uninstalled. I used Titanium backup to both backup my apps and to delete the bloatware.
There are very few system apps that are not needed by the system, titanium only backs up data by default. Be careful what you delete and always research first

[Q] Some pressing questions about ROMs

Alright so I recently rooted my phone. And it is cool and all, but now I want to test some ROMs, and MIUI. So I have a couple of questions that I could find no where else. Also I'm using Froyo 2.2.1 if I update to the latest version can I root it again, or when I update will it still keep the root?
Question 1- What should I use to backup my phone, and, this is important, is there a way to do it without backing it up ON my phone. I only have a 2gb sd card and backing it up is nearly impossible seeing how I have way more than 2gb of stuff that would needed to be backed up.
Question 2- How do I put MIUI on my phone and is it worth it?
Question 3- ROM manager is apparently not compatible with my phone, so what do I use in place or is there a way to make it compatible.
Sorry for it being a long post, I just really need help.

Don't use cwm from rom manager. THe i9000 version works perfect but you should really familiarize yourself with heimdall. Once 2.3.5 drop it will be the only way to root. There is obviously also Odin but heimdall is more reliable.
All you need to do to root is to flash any custom kernel thats compatible with the rom as all the kernels in the infuse section have a root script to root on first boot.
These kernels also have a Voodoo lagfix specific version of cwm baked in
Also you can add root to the rom dump/odin images with magic iso. Su goes in xbin. And superuser.apk goes in /system/app all in the factoryfs.rfs image.
Thanks, this helps. But I also need a little help on the whole back up situation, is there a way to back up externally or will I have to back up on my phone. Like I said I only have a 2GB SD card so backing up is impossible with 5+gbs of stuff that would be backed up.
From my experience, unless you wipe the SD card everything that is stored on it will be kept (other than Apps and texts), but your pictures, music, etc. will be saved. Sync your contacts to google so you don't have to worry about saving those.
I used Cyanogenmod on the HTC Aria and it was great, but I haven't tried it on the infuse - it's updated regularly but you have to decide if it's the set up you want.
I actually am using MIUI now and I love it. Very customizable and different than the typical ASOP ROMs. I flash new ROMS constantly, but I am actually sticking with MIUI right now.
Alright, so MIUI it is then. So can someone help me with this back up problem of mine, I just need to know how to back up, externally if possible, and how to flash roms, because in ROM manager when I go to flash clockworkmod recovery the INfuse is not on the list.

Buy a larger SD card? Or backup with Titanium Backup. This requires that you wipe everything at the beginning of the rom installation process, though. I backed up Titanium, installed Infused 2.2.3, and all my apps were gone when the phone booted back up. Went to the Market, installed Titanium Backup again, and voila: all of my apps and data were backed up. Took about 5 minutes to restore it all, and my phone is running like a dream.
In rom manager you want to pick "Samsung I9000."

If you want to back up everything, use Titanium Backup. If all you want to do is backup pictures/videos, they are located inside the /DCIM folder. Just take the pictures/videos and place them on your desktop or whatever. Then, put them back in /DCIM.
As to how to flash ROMs, use CWM. Every ROM has their flashing instructions on their thread. I don't like using ROM Manager unless its just to install/remove add-ons on Infusedv2.x.x.
To flash MIUI, you don't need ROM Manager. It's all done through CWM.

If you want cwm use heimdall to flash a custom kernel. On 2.2.1 stock this would be the comunity kernel or defuse kernel. If the kernel is zipped up or in a .tar then extract (7zip is good for this) it and only look for "zimage" that is the actual kernel, anything else in there is not relevant to heimdall Also if you never used heimdall before I recommended v1.1 because it is more self explained. You can also use odin but need the kernel in a .tar archive. You can tar the zimage in 7zip but may have permissions problems doing this in windows. There may be other. Tar specific apps that let you set Linux permissions but I haven't used any.
If you want the old fashioned way then use the i9000 version in rom manager. But first you need to push modded 3e recovery. Do some searching on 3e and signature verification failure. I can't write a full tutorial on every questions thread. God knows the tutorials exist all over this and every galaxy s forum.

Alright so once I back up with TI BU, how do I get it back once I have a new ROM? And also, Where do I get CWM?
I found out how to CWM, but I don't need to back up my phone before I install it do I?

[Q] Nandroid Errors ...

Hi Folks,
I am running Infinity 1204. I love it, stable as can be. Think I am gonna stay with this version after reading all the problems people are having with the 1211 version.
I am on CWM v5.0.2.7 and when I go to do a nandroid backup, it halts with an error sayin 'unable to create image of' on time it was system and the other was of data.
Has anyone else encountered this? Is it possible due to the ext4 formatting? any pointers?
Also: I have successfully done a backup with rom manager. It seems as though cwm sees this as a valid backup for restoring. Does anyone know if you can use a rom manager backup to restore in CWM?
I'm not much help, but I have successfully restored to CWM backups on 4.0.1.4 on Gummycharged FE 2.0 with IMO 13.6 kernel and I believe Humblecharged 5.0 RC2 with IMO 4.0 kernel.
Check the Infinity ROM thread from known issues with CWM 4.0.1.4. You may be able to use that version to create and restore backups. To my knowledge, people have successfully used the new version of CWM with Infinity to create and restore backups.
I don't know this for certain, but I haven't heard of a single successful instance of ROM manager working on this phone regarding backup and restore. I suspect it will not work, although it would be interesting to see.
Even if you soft-brick your device, you could easily get back to working order via Odin. I've soft-bricked a few times- as long as you can get into download mode, you should be fine.
You could try P3Droid's Odinmaker from the market. I haven't really used it much because I have been able to restore from CWM.
Yeah ... I'm pretty comfortable with Odin and CWM for flashing and installing zip files and such. I've had this phone since the weekend it hit the market and I have recovered from numerous brick jobs in learning my way around the phone.
But I've never played with nandroid until now and the phone hasn't completed a nandroid backup the couple of times I've tried it. Was just wondering if it was an issue maybe with this combination of ROM and CWM.
Edit: Now that I'm home I decided to try it with the cable plugged into desktop to ensure max power source. It goes through the whold backup process and at what I would assume is the end of the process it pukes up;
"Error while making a backup image of /datadata!"
But!! If I go back into the restore section of cwm, it does show a copy with today's date that I just performed. I just don't know if it is a valid full backup with the error I got.

how do you quickly restore after ROM install?

For those that are testing roms, how do you back up your installed apps/data to load to the new rom and get up and running quickly? I have 80+ apps that I really hate to have to reinstall or have progress reset every time I try a new rom. I have TB but have seen mixed reviews here on its results. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I have already read the threads how to backup existing setup in case something goes wrong.

Make a CWM backup. Install new ROM, then go to Backup and Restore, go to advanced restore, then select the backup you made, and select restore data. That will bring back all of your apps/setting and such.

Exactly how I do it!

Thank you. I thought cwm was only to put back to the way I started like a windows image file.

I apologize, I misunderstood your question......
I used CWM when I went from stock rooted 2.3.5 to stock rooted 2.3.6 to restore all my apps. I'd imagine there could be some issues if you used CWM in the same manner when going from stock rom to say RebelROM so for that I'd use MyBackup. I prefer it over TB any day. So use MB to make your backup of your apps (apk's and data) before flashing the new rom, flash the new rom and then once you get MB on your phone again use it to restore the apps, apk's first then data after all the apk's have been restored.
Sorry for the confusion
I use Rom Toolbox...it works quite well

I just tested a theory i had and it worked flawlessly. I just flash supercharged v5 and before i did i just wiped cache and dalvix and formatted system, i did not do a factory data reset. I then flashed the rom and everything went flawlessly. I still have all my apps and data from before the flash.

[Q] Why isn't full adb restore working?

Hello:
I was stuck at JB .30 without root - so I used "adb backup" to copy my apps + data before downgrading to ICS and rooting. Now, thanks to buhohitr, I'm back to JB .30 with root; however, the restore from .ab isn't going so good.
I have a big back up file (about 4GB). The backup went smoothly and officially ended with Backup Finished. Again, before I wiped the tablet with a downgrade. I've tried a couple things and neither seem to get the restore to go through.
1) Titanium Backup. TB did load the .ab file and showed all the apps that were backed up. I can pick through the one's I actually want. But once I start the backup it hangs on the first or second app being restore.
2) Using "adb restore", basically the same thing happens. I run the restore and the tablet asks for permission to continue. I say "Restore" and then it hangs on the first or second app. It's been sitting there for 15 minutes now (i.e., alarm clock app). It really shouldn't be taking this long.
I've tried and tried again several times with both methods. One other thing to mention is that I didn't use a password when backing up. I know other programs want this - but I don't see how it's a problem. Again, I can see all the apps in TB and also "adb restore" actually does get one or two things done before it freezes.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers.

I confused, you stated you're on JB .30 before backup and downgrade? (typo with .30, since ICS is .30).

Hello:
Sorry for the hiatus. I RMA'd my TF700 for repair and they finally sent back a new replacement unit. Truthfully, I'm starting to get tired of ASUS's sub-par customer service.
Anyways, now I've got a new unit back a the latest JB and need to downgrade to ICS and then use ADB restore to bring everything back again. I think 'll be okay doing the downgrade using the dlpkgfile method.
I tried to do the ADB restore before RMAing and was having difficulty (see OP). What is the right time to do the ADB restore? Or best practices with doing it? Has anyone had success with Titanium Backup and ad file? My backup file is 3.81 GB big.
Thanks for you time.

I strongly suspect that adb backup doesn't work for transformers. At least up to now, nobody has been able to convince me otherwise in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176169
What you could try is to extract the files from the backup file (https://github.com/nelenkov/android-backup-extractor), then manually copy relevant files to your transformer, which will definitely need root. However, when I carry out "adb backup -all -shared", no app data is stored. Only when I specifically list apps for adb to backup, some of their data is backuped (which then might be restored by Titanium or manually).
