I'm looking for a tether app that will work with cricket and get past having to pay their $10 tether fee. My phone is rooted. Thanks.
Try Wireless Tether for Root Users, just Google for it.
If it doesn't work, try FoxFi, which can be found on the market.
If THAT doesn't work, download PDA Net, it's wired, but it gets the job done. (Can also be found on the market.)

I want to know if the nexus s from Sprint has the native tether or do we have to root the phone to install one?

It has it but there is a fee if you use it.

No no fee just went in to wireless network menu and turn it on. no additional service required.
supposedly fees apply, but at this point we don't know for certain whether sprint will charge or not.
Yeah mine works too, but Hastings said anything about fees

yeah... just called in . they said that 4g tether requires the 29.99/mo plan.
anyone got a hack/work-around for this?
right now only able to tether via 3g, and looking for the 4g tether fix.
I posted this using the defulat tether app in my Nexus, and I do not have the hotspot code in the sprint system :/
Officaly Sprint will tell you hotspot is $29.99, as its all the reps know.
Please note:

Root your NS4G > Install Wireless Tether from Market, or google the WiFiTether APK. This will allow to tether via 4G or 3G without the hotspot plan. Worked on Evo and Works on my Nexus also.

Is there any way to get 4G tethering and infrastructure rather than ad-hoc?
If via wireless or wifi-tether app what version are you using? 2.0.8 pre-1 or 3.0 pre-14? Or something else? The built-in tethering turns 4G off, so alternatively to wireless tether is there a way around this?
I believe it is native tether. I have been using it since may 10th and it works fine. Nothing has shown up on my Sprint bill yet. I hear they are going to change that in July though. I would post the link but I am too new for that. I did see it on this forum.
When I tried Hotspot on an Evo it came up that it wasn't provisioned. On the Nexus S it works without any notices. I'm assuming that if they're going to start to charge for it they will at least give us a heads up.
ive used pda net for years. works perfectly for me. amdwin machine, xp pro

Use the 3.0 pre-14 version of Wifi thether and under settings, set it up as a Nexus One device. This worked for me perfectly to be able to use it under infrastucture mode and not the ad-hoc mode.

I tried that. What mode did you use, softap or the other one for infrastructure? I tried just that, using 3.0 pre-14 and saying it was a Nexus One, and using softap. It activated the built-in hotspot and still disconnected 4G. Seemed kinda buggy. I'm guessing more work needs to be done for this, and I'm sure someone will figure it out soon enough.
IF/WHEN the built in hotspot is activated, am I going to be charged... or since I'm rooted and on a custom rom (I think just stock deoxed) is it unlocked where I'm not going to see a charge.
I'm still kind of reading through and trying to make sense of this all.
I have been using tether all month heavily and I just got my bill and I did not get charged. (Not rooted)

Since Verizon will start to charge extra for tethering on June 15th, I am looking for a free app to tether via USB.
I tried android-wired-tether since I have root access, but that app does not work.
I am aware of pdanet, easytether and tether for andriod, but all are paid apps.
If there is not a free usb tether app, what is the best free working wifi one for the droid charge?
Thanks!
I would recommend Klink tether they have a free and a paid version. Its way better. Also the developer of the app responds quickly if you have problems. Hope that helps

I really like "Open Garden Wifi" for wifi tethering. many people really seam to like Barnacle Wifi Tether also.
I have been using PDAnet for usb tether and wireless tether (root) for wifi.
Both seem to have been working good on the Charge.
I used them both with the Fascinate for months.
I just bought my charge a few days ago and recently rooted with the new altered beast ODIN ROM. Is there any tether software that doesn't require a client installation on the tethered computer, or maybe just the phone drivers?

WIFI tether options don't require any software on the client, just a working wireless card and OS that supports Wifi (can't think of one that doesn't)...
Wireless tether for root users is what I use
Barnacle is another free option
I am sure there are more....
It's been a long time since I've had to find the Wireless Tether app and I'm having issues trying to find the version that had WPA2 support. The current one that I constantly find floating around has the WPA supplicant but only allows wep-like passcodes. Anyone know where I can find the version that actually allows you to use WPA2 security?
edit: Oh yeah, jsut in case it has bearing, I'm using the Droid Bionic with GB rooted.
You could always use the sprint hotspot. Just kidding. I use the wireless tether for roo users app on the market. It works great for me. Just type tether in the market (or black market depending on your rom) and it is usually the first app. Hope this helps.

Yeah... It'll be nice if that ever works again... I just found out GingerBread locked down all of the wifi tether apps... Verizon really needs to stop hating on wireless tether and wanting to charge $30 a month on top of what they charge people for data.
Man that seems a little excessive. I have heard about that on tv. Where at&t only gives you 2gb and then cuts you off, verizon and t-mobile give you as much as you want but the more you use the less bandwith they give you. I think sprint is the only truly unlimited data plan

I want to preface this with that I am on Verizon so this is using the Verizon hotspot app and I have rooted my phone but I expecet this to do the same on a non-rooted phone.
I have noticed that if I go directly into the app, the service will not work because it does a check to see if I pay for the tethering option. When it checks, it fails and tells me that if I want it that I need to call a number and add it to my plan. However I have found out that if you have a 3rd party app/widget, it will activate the tethering without the check. I have done this both through "Locale Wifi Hotspot Plugin" and "Tethering Widget". Other tethering apps seem to be flaky and either not work at all or timeout.
I have not had any issues with this; I watched an hour long show on Netflix on my tablet yesterday and used my old DInc(now deactivated), which I have the video out wired into my car, to play a few kids shows this morning on the way into work. I hope Verizon doesn't catch onto this workaround.
I too have found this to work! I downloaded switchpro widgets and it allows you to turn it on through the stock app and configure at will. More reliable than foxfi for me! Give it a try if you want wifi tether without root
haha nice. I wonder if it VZW can detect this and bill you?
Failed on my sprint version, cool that it works on vzw
I bypass all that and just use FoxFi.

Thanks this worked for me on my unrooted verizon. Does anyone know any other teathering widgets that work? Im not a fan of the icon.
I would just hope this doesnt come back and get billed for it.
I just installed FoxFi and it works good.
Also if you are on the new shared plans, tethering should be "free" now.
i can't believe FoxFi hasn't gotten yanked for VZW customers yet like they did with PDANet
Ok I need help. I have foxfi and the wifi plugin both working. What do you guys suggest I stick with? Am I better off sticking with foxfi, since the other way uses verizon's hot spot?
foxfi works for me, unrooted at&t s3
Does ICS have tracking files like GB that notify vzw about tethering? I remember having to flash a file to remove them.
Also on that note, apparently toggling on the built in hotspot is much easier to track, according to lifehacker... Not exactly sure how FoxFi works but sounds like that might be the "safer" option, despite the cleanliness of just toggling on the built in. Also, I can confirm that using the toggle method works on AT&T as well.
I installed it on my non rooted TMo, and it turns wireless tethering on, what ever that connects to the tether gets directed to TMo to add wireless tethering to my account.
set it up on 2 sgs iii last night, both took a little while to connect my win 7 laptop the first time, but all is good.

They would have a hard time collecting on something you didn't agree to pay for, and you aren't doing anything wrong if it "just works" using a 3rd party app.
Still I just use Wireless Tether.
Tethering sounds great on a "shared plan", but what the heck are you going to do with a gig or two of data?
Wow totally works! Stock Verizon...

Are you on Verizon? I am and I want to use the good ol' Wireless Tether app hosted on google code. I chose the generic ICS profile but it starts with errors. Log says failed setting ad-hoc mode. .

Curious, did you actually use another device and go on line using the tether?

download Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot on the play store. Works like a charm. Just make sure to Enable and Disable within the app and don't use the built in hot spot enabler.

this didn't really answer my question though.I have a unlimted data plan will i get charged if i used this feature on att ..when i had a iphone 2 years ago i used a jailbroken app to wifi tether and att show how found out in there system that i was doing this and they wanted to charge me 30$ dollars for a tethering plan so i gave them hell.Thats why i ask ......
just use the application foxfi in the market its onsale right now for 2.99 it works without root. at&t wont recognize ur tethering unless u over 5gb of data limit I believe. been tethering for free without paying more
edit: and yes! u will get charge when you use the built in hotspot on the s4 before u use it.. theres a lot of free and paid applications that bypasses that tethering in the market. root or not rooted device
