[Q] [Verizon] Can you use a 4G phone without a 4G sim? - General Questions and Answers

Can I just go out, buy a second hand 4G phone (Verizon) and use it with just 3G so that I don't have to go and pay the 4G activation/sim fee?

There is a GSM hack for the Droid 4, Bionic, and Razr. Any other 4G phones, no.

Hmm, maybe you don't understand. (Or maybe I worded poorly) I just want to know if I can still use it on Verizon without going out and paying for the 4G sim (And running without it)

Verizon uses sims?? Since when?

Since Verizon started to offer 4G LTE phones. Without a SIM card in a 4G phone, it won't connect to the network at all, 4G or 3G, as far as I know! :fingers-crossed:

[Q] Can I Use The AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket On T-Mobile?

I have a T-Mobile Pay As You Go plan so I am wondering if I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and get it unlocked through eBay if I would be able to use it with my T-Mobile SIM card? I don't need the 4G LTE on it as I would just use my wireless Internet if I ever needed to get on the Internet. I use this phone mostly for texting, phone calls, and games. Do not use it for the 4G, 3G, etc.
Thanks for any and ALL help!
Oh and if I unlock the phone to use on T-Mobile do I need to root to flash any kernels, etc? Looked for answer to my question but was unable to find an answer.
ATT for the win jaja
Yes you do need a root to flash new kernels
Edit: and yes you can use it with any GSM provider if you get it unlocked hopes this answers your question

Thank you so much for your answer! I appreciate it. What kernels would work the best and if I root it can I still get the OTA Official update of ICS when it gets released? I believe there is somewhere that will help me root it correct? THANKS again!
Awesome! Thanks for the info.

Hi, As for my understanding, once you rooted, the OTA will stop working...
Below thread might be helpful for you regarding what is needed to use SR on Tmobile:

I was looking at running the ATT Samsung Captivate on T-Mobile for a friend.
I found out the Captivate would only run at "Edge" speeds on T-Mobile. Not 3G or 4G.
Might want to check to see if it would be the same for the Skyrocket.

You are correct, ATT and tmobile have different bands in which their phones operate, so you will only get EDGE speeds at most. Also to clarify ATT's 3G data operates over 850/1900Mhz spectrum and tmobile 3G operates over 900/2100Mhz so you really can't use 3g/4g at all unless you go with another carrier like Straight Talk where they use tmobiles and ATT's towers so you recieve 3g on your smartphone. Good luck !

WOW! Thank you all for such much information, I LOVE this forum. As for the 3G honestly some may think I am crazy but I honestly don't care about the 3G/4G stuff. I use my phone for talking and texting, I never use the data plan. In fact I just don't have a data plan so it honestly don't matter to me. I just wanted to make sure my phone would be useable without having to root it, change the kernels, etc. to make calls and text family & friends.
So thank you ALL for all your information and taking the time to share it. It is very much appreciated!
The Skyrocket says it supports LTE 700/1700/2100 so does the Galaxy Note and they just found a way to use the Galaxy Note on TMobile 4g so wouldn't this phone support it as well? They have the same specs.

Us skyrockerters had figured this out easy before the note came out. I've been using mine on TMobile 4G since January.
Alias..if all you want is talk and text then you don't have to do anything except unlock the phone and put your Sim card in.

HTC Thunderbolt on AT&T - LTE Only ?

Hey,
First of all let me say I know there are other posts concerning HTC Thunderbolt on AT&T, but mine is a little different.
My wife has an HTC Thunderbolt, loves it and wants to keep it. But we have moved to a new place a few months ago, and since then we don't get any verizon reception in our place! But AT&T works, and has data!
I have a Galaxy S, and will switch it soon to take another phone with another carrier. My wife has the HTC Thunderbolt, and doesn't want to switch phone and pay a new device.
Now one small detail about my wife, she is mainly interested in data only. If there is a way for her to get internet only on her phone, she would be happy. (She sends texts via Google Voice, and can place calls on her PC).
Do you guys know if it is possible to somehow get a tablet SIM card from AT&T, put the SIM card in the SIM card slot of HTC Thunderbolt, and get internet only on the Thunderbolt ? I know the phone is CDMA, but she doesn't really need the phone or text message capability. She basically just wants a small tablet. I'm mostly saying that because I know AT&T is LTE also, and that it might work ?
Otherwise did someone succeed into changing careers with something else ? Virgin Mobile ? Cricket ? etc...
Thank you
The tbolt is CDMA but has a sim slot?
Will att sell you hotspot card and she could WiFi her tbolt to it?
via xda premium on my AOKP'd Evo LTE

tbolt does have a sim slot. It is a hybrid phone like all 4G Verizon phones. Basically the phone uses CDMA for 3G and phone. And uses the Sim card for LTE.
We could just buy a hotspot yes, but that's an extra device to carry which she doesn't want to do.
AT&T and Verizon use different LTE bands I believe...though they are both in the 700 mhz range I doubt the thunderbolt has the radio bits to get on AT&T bands, as it predates the existence of AT&T's LTE and I don't think hardly any devices even now have that capability. I can't see the harm in throwing in a sim to see what happens, of course.
The thunderbolt lte radio doesn't operate at the same frequencies necessary to work on at&t. It was made that way so that you can't switch the phone to other providers. It will work on other cdma type networks but GSM providers like at&t are a no go.

I'd like to add that the Verizon SIM is not your ordinary typical SIM. It's a RUIM card. I believe the thunderbolt can only accept these kind of cards as well. But in either case, Verizon’s LTE network operates in the upper half of the 700 Mhz range (746-787 Mhz), while AT&T’s operates on the lower half (704-746).

Trade it for a HTC Inspire. Lol.
Same phone, just on AT&T.

Way easier just to get an AT&T phone. You could probably trade one outright for an Inspire 4G. They're both worth about $100 in great condition.

That would be easier, but..... I too have wondered about what other hidden features are in the Tbolt.
Example: (It's rumored when official ICS is released for the Tbolt, international roaming will be activated or allowed.)
It's also rumored that ICS will actually be released...
Its rumored that ics will make my thunderbolt so much better it can fly.

[Q] Is a dual carrier Galaxy Note II possible?

So anyway,
I work for Sprint and just got a free Note II. Am I crazy at thinking there has to be a way to have the phone activated on both AT&T and Sprint at the same time and choose data from one or the other? Dual boot ....
My S3 is AT&T and data speeds are awesome here but Sprint has limited coverage, (it's getting better though)
When the Note II came out I joked around about getting it and throwing my AT&T radio into it so that I could get the data speeds while using the sprint phone service I get for free. Now that I have one, it would be perfect if I could get the free phone service from Sprint. I'm still under contract with AT&T and plan to stay that way for a while, I've got the grandfathered $30 unlimited internet. I really don't know much but I'm learning. I can't find any bandwith the sprint model supposedly wont cover (except one LTE) I can't find any reason why either carrier will not allow the same phone to be active on both, although I also can't think of why anyone would want to pay two carriers for the same phone either lol. Is there a way to run a dual boot ROM to accomplish this or something close to it? Will the hardware in the Sprint version register correctly on the AT&T towers? Any thoughts on this subject?

What he's asking for is legit, re-read the OP to understand the situation.
@OP, is the Sprint Note II a world phone? Does it have a SIM card slot? If not, I'm afraid it's a no go. Sprint is CDMA and ATT is GSM - they're two different technologies.

[Q] one x prepaid?

Ok I have looked everywhere for a solid answer on this.
I actually bought this unlocked att branded one x for use with T-Mobile prepaid. I however didn't know that my data (even with adjusted apnpsettings) only got edge speeds. So I'm trying to find.prepaid alternatives .. I was told by att that gophone doesn't work with their 65$ 1gb data plan because it's a 4g phone. Is this correct? Also I've looked into straight talk however with Sims costing 50-90 dollars and uncertainty idk . Any reliable information on what I can do with prepaid with this phone AND have 3g/4g possibility please let me know ASAP.. thanks everyone
What city are you in? The website Airportal.de shows where T-mobile is activating 3g for non T-mobile phones.

Definetly check out this website. If you see any pins in your area for 3G (HSPA+) maybe hold out until they bring more towers online. In my area they are adding a few miles of coverage per day.

What does that mean exactly, that the phone simply won't work at all (even for voice and EDGE)? Or that it will only work on voice and EDGE? Or it will work on 3G HSPA, but not 4G HSPA+?

My understanding is that ATT checks the IMEI of the phone accessing data and if it is a phone with 4G capability it blocks it completely. No EDGE, no 3G, nothing, no data access. You may be able to skirt by for a while until they track you down and cut you off, but it is only a matter of time until you are cut off. Voice should work.

So beat me if needed. I have a new att one x coming today. If i get it unlocked, and use a straight talk sim that is a tmobile sim, should i not get the same speeds as a $30 tmobile 5gig plan? I live in mpls and right now get great speed on my n4 with a $30 plan. Thanks b4 and after.
Short answer is probably not sorry
The n4 is pentaband and gets all of tmobiles bands. The att one x might get 3g on T-Mobile depending on the refarming in your area. Chances are it won't be as strong or consistent as the n4

[Q] What MVNO options do I have for Verizon GS3? with little/no flashing?

I'd like to get off of my plan with verizon... and go to an MVNO. I have a Galaxy s3 that I'd like to take with me. I'm using a rom that I enjoy... so I'd like to not have to flash my phone to go to an MVNO. Is that possible?
I would just sell my phone and get another from a different carrier except that my screen is cracked... making it nearly impossible to sell for a good price.
What are my options as you see them?
Thanks for you help ahead of time.
Any sim card that uses the Tmo or Att network will satisfy your needs
Sadly, I used a Straight Talk AT&T sim on my Verizon S3. Running the phone on 2G/Edge speeds is unbearable considering how powerful the phone is.

I haven't seen this solution anywhere. I must really be using the wrong search terms. I just want to make sure I have this absolutely clear. I can simply using any MVNO that uses an AT&T or TMobile sim and I won't have to do any flashing? I don't mind slow speeds, I will rarely use the data outside of wifi.
Thanks again!
