Gotta ask [ Verizon users] SGS3 Vs GNEX? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I was absolutely stoked to upgrade to the S3 until the locked bootloader news hit. So now I ask, with Android 4.1 on the GNEX, is it really worth the extra $50 for another locked Verizon phone? Its got a lot of cool gimmicky features, but they are just that, gimmicky. I don't see anything I'd use on a daily basis in the S3 that isn't on the GNEX already, or has a Port for. It sucks I already bought a micro SD card, and loaded it up, so I can't return it. I really don't like not having an SD card, but I might be willing to sacrefice that for an unlocked phone. What's everyone's thoughts on this? Coming from a Droid X I have little hope the SGS3 will be unlocked.

Well I would say GNEX. But hurry quick before you can't buy it because of the ban !
Simba was moving too slow, so I told him to Mufasa.

Idk developers on the gs3 are already getting a workaround for the boot loader to flash custom kernels. It doesnt seemed to be as locked down as motorala phones

how easy is the work around? I know MOTO had a few and I got sick of jumping through hoops. I have yet to be able to get my DX into CWM without rebooting several times, or general screwing around for 20 minutes. Its the main reason I dropped custom ROM's. Flashing was a nightmare.

I Am running Jelly Bean on my Gnex and it flies, faster than stock gs3. But I am still tempted......
Oh and the new voice command is waaaayyyyyy better than svoice.

Gnex. Until they figure out the boot loader things are going to be slow. Its apparently encrypted as well.

Do they have root for 4.1 yet? I'd imagine so, but didn't see anything skimming the GNEX forums.

Oh ya, root.....mods....some themes...and it's only been a week since it was introduced.

Nice. Sounds like I may be leaning towards the GNEX then. I'll wait until both hit the store since I only NEED root, but I miss running custom ROM's, I haven't done that since the OG Droid.

Anybody else listing their thunderbolt?

I just listed mine on Craigslist in anticipation of the SGSII coming to VZW.
I'm really really hoping it'll have 4G because I don't want to come back to the tbolt or have to deal with the bionic (unless the bionic is unlockable).
What about you guys? Anybody else selling to get top dollar before the new phones are officially announced?
Edit: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...according-to-the-vzw-support-twitter-account/ woot, sgs2 will have 4g!
Lol, what if it's delayed I may sell mines eventually as well, I hate Samsung but this phone is a beast.

Yeah, I'm worried about it being delayed too :\
Fortunately, I have an old Incredible laying around that I can use in the meantime. I really hope VZW doesn't drop the ball here and delay it past early September. As far as I can tell, that tweet is VZW's first admission that the sgs2 for VZW even exists.

After hearing that it will have 4G, I might be tempted to sell my TBolt once it launches. I also am not a fan of samsung phones, but this thing really makes me drool.
i'll probably wait until next march(when my 1st year is up) as ill get my $400 deposit back then.
As a previous owner of the fascinate, I am definitely with you guys on the anti-Samsung bandwagon. The thing that has changed my mind is that Samsung has said that the sgs2 is practically made for Ice Cream Sandwich. That gives me hope that they will be updating it relatively quickly once ICS is released.
Also, the fact that they gave the sgs2 to some of the CM devs makes me think they are more consumer focused than they were the first go 'round.

All good points, I forgot they hooked up some devs with phones. I still have nightmares about my Captivate. This phone is in a completely different league though.
To be honest with you I want my next phone to be great out of the box. I never thought I would reach a point that I would be tired of rom flashing, lol. I could slap lpp on top of touchwiz and would be good to go.
Still love my bolt though, we'll see.

It's also the first and only android phone with a completely open sourced linux kernel (no linked binary blobs for drivers in it).
Selling your phone off for this right now is silly though. Who knows when it'll be out for CDMA/LTE. It could be another 5-6 months at the earliest.
The Galaxy S2 having 4G is still unconfirmed.

For anyone looking to upgrade to the RAZR

If you are looking to upgrade I thought I would post this for you all.
http://www.vzbuzz.com/2011/11/amazon-selling-the-droid-razr-for-111-11-for-one-day-only/

Add a new line
I am super tempted, I hate waiting for the Galaxy Nexus. If I got it I would just return it for the GN anyways so.
But, when you add a line the price goes back up to $200 on contract. Still great, but not $111.
Cool phone, holding out for the Nexus though. Can't beat ICS + HD screen + first to update + no carrier/manufacturer crap.
am waiting for the nexus too

Unfortunately, the 111.11 price is only for NEW lines. Upgrades/etc are $249.
I really do like the razr but I may as well hold out for the nexus. I have yet to own an android phone that has received any sort of update. I started with the HTC Aria, moved to the D2G, and now the charge. I really like the fact of no bloat out of the box too and we all know the roms we are dying to get on our phones will be available almost from day one. Part of me is also wanting to try, dare I say it, WP7.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
That's not even the price for new lines -- it's just for new accounts.
Upgrades and new lines on existing accounts are both 249.99 (which is still $50 less than buying it straight from Verizon, though).

I've been too spoiled by the awesome screen to settle for a downgrade like the Razr would be.

Say what you will about the SG3 radio... But I have never dropped a call or had a 4G outage since I purchased it on launch day. My Nexus however was a completely different story. The Nexus will give you a new rom to play with every night, but the GS3 will give you fewer headaches in the signal and battery departments.

Good bye HTC Rezound, hello Galaxy S3!
Even if the bootloader dont get unlocked, ill be happy using the kexec method...other than the extra 30 seconds boot time, I see no difference. Also our current flashig methods dont trip the flash counter since were Not flashing non-stock firmware in odin!

I had an Epic Touch (on Sprint) and went to a Galaxy Nexus (on Verizon) then a S3 and IMO it's a huge upgrade. I absolutely love this phone and wouldn't even consider going back to a GNex. The only thing I don't like is the physical home button but a stable AOKP will resolve that. As for the locked boot loader I was a little concerned too but with Kexec it's irrelevant. They already have CM9/CM10/AOKP running on this phone. I'd rather just use Kexec knowing I can return to stock then void warranty with a bootloader unlock. JMO!
Both are great phones, I have the GS3 and my old man has the Nexus. Touchwiz isn't too bad if you get use to it.

To trade or not to trade- insight needed!

Hello everyone, been reading these forums.for a while now. . Recently registered. I have a question you all might be able to help me out on. I've been having fun flashing roms left and right since the unlocking of the bootloader, love this phone. Screen, removable battery, speed, eveverything. Only downfall is my signal issues. Flashed new modem, tried just about everything, still everyone is choppy and.I'm dropping calls. Also been informed people have tried calling me with my phone not ringing. Coming from a razr maxx and before that OG razr, then droid x. My question to all is I have a friend who's willing to trade his razr maxx limited edition (red and black kevlar) and 100$, for my s3. What do you guys think? Stick with the s3? Wait for official JB? Hold out for Razr HD? Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Personally, I'd rather have the GS3. But if strong signal & battery life are your 2 number 1 features, then maybe the maxx is better. You should be able to do better than $100 cash in the trade.
You sure it's not that your S3 is defective? If you have access to another S3, maybe try it in the area you use your S3 most often.

I second this.
I'd Odin back to 100% stock/bloated and run it for a little see if the connectivity issue is resolved. If not bring it to verizon and tell them to fix it/replace it. I wouldn't take a step backwards to a Razr Maxx or no Maxx.... ick. hehe

I agree I think I would be extremely disappointed going to the Razr Maxx from the S3...I would think that it would be defective and flashing back to stock via odin, or having Verizon replace it for you would fix the problem...I think your best bet is to see if you can get better service with your S3 first before making a decision some might say your bound to regret.

I am leaving Verizon for AT&T to get my GS4, paying a small ETF and will be happy doing so. I do suspect the GS4 will be rooted and the rumors that it has been done so already are encouraging. But after the VZW GN2 bootloader crap and how quickly they locked it by pushing and update and replacing all store stock I am finally done with them.
ever since ICS I really dont see the need to flash different ROMs since its so smooth. I don't like touchwiz that much either so I just install nova launcher. I just need root so I can tether that's about it. Locked bootloader won't be a deal breaker to me. I love my verizon service compared to the att I used to have

Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.
For me rooting is for tethering, runnning adblocker and other things that require it. Sometimes I consider a custom ROM, but really it depends on whats out there and how much hassle there is to get back to stock.
I root to install AdAway and remove bloatware. The only phone I've ever been inclined to install a custom ROM on is my HTC One X -- just because it really needed it.
