[Verizon]Crap signal - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Anyone else have a really weak signal with their device? My thunderbolt had 4 bars at my house, I have one on this phone. Even driving around I've not seen anything over 3 bars and have even dropped to 3 g a few times.

What's the actual dbm difference (if any)? I'm curious because I use a TB for my work phone and wanna know what to expect from my GS3.

You might have a defective unit, I came from the SGS2 and the S3 is hands down better for signal across the board.

Co-sign, except I came from the OG epic. Far superior radio on this to me.
go go gadget galaxy s3!

This is one of those threads that is meaningless information or worse because the mods combined the forums and the posters failed to flag their carrier. So-called "signal" issues are carrier-specific.

This phone has issues. Tmo says no calls lately?

I had to call tmo today to order a 3rd set of g2x.
Reboots and freezing have gotten out of hand.
I had a Rep tell me they have not gotten calls about the issues recently and thought they were just about ironed out.
I got a real bad retention agent who basically said go elsewhere.
Really. But even she was better than Verizon.
I called back about my bill and got a great agent who read the notes from retention I think as she knew we both were having issues.
The transfer went from customer support to loyalty.
Loyalty sent 2 new phones out today. Same day.
This will be our 3rd set of g2x.
Tmo claims call ins are down. Complaints too.
I hope these phones work or we will have to look at sensations.
We love the phones. Not the problems.
And don't want sensations.
Why the heck is tmo not getting the galaxy s2?

Did you try factory data reset ?
That seems to work on some of the phones that are having reboot problems.
I'm on my 3rd G2X and the only problem I've had with all 3 is poor data reception
at my work location. (while the MyTouch 4g does just fine there)
I returned my phone to TMo for a refund over a week ago but Craigslist
got to me in when I saw a G2X for $260 so I'm back.
Too bad this phone is only capable of 14mbps.
I'm definitely down for getting a Sensation though.
I'll just get one off Craigslist.
Anyone see anywhere what speed the Sensation can do ?
TMo will doubtless get the Galaxy S II, dont worry.
The Sammysung Hawk is going to be 21 mbps buts it not dual core.
http://www.androidcentral.com/samsu...ile-june-8th-offers-solid-mid-range-4g-device
I just got off the phone with T-Mobile and was aware that the backlight bleeding is not a known issue. Although they always seem to take care of me. Shout out to John.

Yeah I did the volume down and power. Also from settings.
I love the phone. I just think its a shame it has such issues.
The sensation looks good but imagine how long updates may take with all that extra stuff in sense
I am a fan of touchwiz. I don't know why. But after my vibrant I'm sketchy on relying on Samsung for updates.
And I hate kies.
But the gs2 looks so damn good I'm not sure you would care about the update

I've read in 2reviews the g2x outperforms the galaxy s2 in games and playing flash.
So I would like to keep it if I can get one that works right
And with a better gpu shouldn't the g2x run smoother over all?

My phone has some hellacious troubles with lost signal. I did the GB leak update, but that didn't take care of it. I drove from my house in Chicago to one of the burbs to check out a Sammy Charge from Verizon and the phone lost signal at least a half dozen times. On the way back, the Charge didn't lose signal once. Don't know if it's faulty software when it transitions from "4G" to lower speeds, bad radio driver or bad antenna design. This is basically a good phone, but dropping calls when I'm driving is simply not acceptable when my N1 and now the Charge don't have the problem, driving the exact same routes.

This is simply false. The Orion is 1.2 Ghz which is why the OS feels snappier. Android doesn't use the GPU for accelerated graphics except in a few apps. Honeycomb is the first OS that really pushes GPU acceleration.
Go on Youtube and compare 3D games between both phones and see which one lags out and stumbles to keep up. Hint (it isn't the G2x)

Why do people keep swapping phones?!?!? Seriously? There hasn't been any new OS updates from T-Mobile/LG so you're not going to get a different software experience. I am waiting for an update - if the update doesn't fix it then I can say it's a faulty hardware. Also the leaked GB is useless as it uses the same baseband and kernel as our current system. If you flash Cyanogenmod and still get reboots then you might have a faulty phone as that's a completely separate kernel.

[Q] Is there a way to recalibrate signal strength?

After rooting with Infused it is showing 3/4 sometimes 4/4 bars in my apt and I know for a fact that I have next to no service depending where i am and always had 0 or 1 bar before rooting. Now it shows almost full but will not send/receive texts. I used to be able to send texts if I sat it on the end of the couch but now I don't even get that.
I know you have to calibrate the battery after installing a rom but do you have to do something similar with the signal strength as well? Mine is way off.
theres no calibration for signal strength.

Yes they do. AT&T doesn't get that great of service in my place. The Infuse does seem worse than my iphone as far as reception I just need to move. Weird thing is that this phone will show full bars but can't even send a text. Knowing my signal strength before installing a rom I know it was always at 1 or no bars depending where it was in my apt.

Try returning to stock. Really sounds like a tower went online for you.
As to not being able to send a text - I stopped being able to send texts a few days ago, but I can't send anything from no less than 3 different phones using my SIM.
Can you call out or use data?
I can but I have to be in a perfect spot. I just picked up an AT&T 3g micro cell tower. Supposed to give me 5 bars in the house. Where I am is really a dead spot for ATT. I'm out right now and the phone is working great out side of that area.
My wife has an iphone 4 and gets better service but still only one bar for her. infuse antenna must be a little weaker maybe.

Inspire 4g Antenna Mod

Ok guys. After having the Inspire off and on for the last 2 years and loving the phone but hating the signal, I decided to try to do something about it.
My work has paid off and I will be attempting to make it better and more on the clean looking side of things.
I decided that the stock antenna just wasn't cutting it... Everyone knows this. So I got out some foil and some glue and got to work with building on to the crappy little sheets of metal they think is an antenna.
I split off a section of foil that is about 1 inch long and half an inch wide as well as a section of foil that is a half inch long and a quarter inch wide. I molded these to sections separately to each antenna contact on the cover. I glued them down to the plastic and made sure that the two sections did not touch where the two contacts are split off.
Results? Doubled my signal strength!!
Where I work, I normally will only get 1 or 2 bars on a good day with 3g and H+ changing back and forth. On a bad day it will jump down to no signal at all. Now I get 3 to 4 bars consistently with H+.
At home: 4 bars normally in the middle of the house, but it will jump between 3g and H+. Now it is at 4 to 5 bars but stays at H+.consistently.
At my girlfriends house: No signal while holding the phone or stuck on Edge. 2 bars if I set the phone down on the table with 3g or H+. Now with the mod, I get a consistent 3 bars on H+ while holding the phone, and 4 to 5 bars while it is on the table with full H+ coverage.
What I plan on doing because I have about 4 of the covers is using different methods and layouts for the modified antenna to see if I can maximize the signal and make it cleaner.
One thing I want to do is get some conductive glue and set up a kind of maze layout on the cover for better coverage. I will post pictures and such later when I get home
Also, I am sorry if this is in the wrong thread. I just want it to be known that we can have a better signal.
Reserved for pictures and whatever else.

I would think that it really is no different having the mod vs not having it. The theory is that the signal strength is always there in the airwaves. The only thing the OP has done is essentially increased the surface area of the antenna so that it will catch the signal better. The concept is no different than say adding foil to the rabbit ears of old, but one is just dealing with a much smaller space to work with.
And by the way...if you are so worried about brain tumors then why do you bother with a cell phone at all?
Wondering
Wonder if this could have any adverse affects on battery and/or voltages supplied to antenna? Any one know?
And any luck on pics yet? I understand that life can get in the way sometimes so no biggee. But I am definitely curious now.

I am not worried cause I use stock equipment that is not altered and approved by the fcc. When I am in an area with bad signal I force my phone into gsm only where I usually always get 4-5 bars :banghead:

I also don't think that altering the antenna, like this, would increase the chance of a brain tumor 1. Studies haven't truly proven that this is true 2. They sell cell phone boosters that do the same thing and those are FCC approved as well. But I do get where your coming from.
Plus I barely talk on the phone I text, surf the web, or use hands free. Once a week won't harm me too much but I would enjoy being able to text in my house, hope this works.
(on a side note I lost my cover a month ago so I jammed a paperclip in the receiver, believe it or not but I got a much better signal, didn't even think about the medical repercussions LOL)
need some pics please
I might have to try that.

the k3 radio should be rolling out in the jellybean update today OTA. maybe wait and see how it is. if you are not opposed to rooting and unlocking the bootloader then i highly recommend cleanrom.
Motorola is a great phone for reception, probably the best imo.
Regardless of the radio on a GS3, it simply doesn't get the same reception some Motorola and Apple phones get... At my house, with the newest radio, I have to go outside in one particular area and stand still to make a call. With my old Droid 2 and my iPhone 4S I could easily walk around, inside and outside and keep a phone call with minimal issues.
The new radio helped mind you, i'm not out of signal 30% of the time now.... but it's still not quite there.
It's different for everyone. I get the same as my HTC incredible. I tested and compared before and after. Like others have said, maybe a different modem will help.

As someone has said, it is different for everyone. At my office everyone has Android except 1 person. The iphone user struggles with signal there while the majority of Android users have a fairly strong signal, including me with both of my S3's. One is stock, one is CleanRom.

Motorolas tend to bre a bit better based on my experience (and looking at signal strengths, data spedd, etc...). But I really like this phone and I'm in a decent enough signal area for this not to be a factor. My wifes iPhone is actually a bit worse than my S3.
Should've seen the Galaxy Nexus... That phone was horrible. I thin it's a Samsung thing.

This has been established for 3 years lol. Samsung makes the most feature rich phone but just doesn't do the best radios. My wife's does better than her nexus did, but still worse than my rezound with my radio combination in her terrible service area. But, it still is the best Samsung she has had as far as reception on a Samsung goes... In her ****ty service area.

Wait a few hours and call back. I tried the keep calling back thing when I was trying to get my upgrade moved up 1 week so I could get the SGS3 and they started saying when I asked about an early upgrade that since I wanted the GS3 they couldn't do it and then started saying no to an early upgrade.
I'm right there with the OP on the terrible reception. I've had Samsung phones before and they all were bad compared to Moto, but the GS3 is the worst I have had. I never had the Nexus so I don't know how bad it was but this is terrible. I constantly have to move my phone around and around and hit resend at least 5 times for every text. Phone calls rarely happen because they just won't come through. I find out after I leave the house that someone had called and left a message. If I make a call I have to walk around in my yard until it finally picks up a signal. Its very very sad that this phone has such ****ty reception because its such a great phone.
OP, if you want to switch wait until the evening shift and call until you get someone extremely friendly. That's what's always worked best when I have had a problem with anything. Any time I have called in the middle of the day for anything they are always assholes and don't really care what your problem is.
Sent from one of the many Anthropomorphic Personalities on the Disc
I just got back from visiting my mom down in Cochran. I live in Warner Robins and in Cochran my wife's gs3 had kicked to 3g at 600 kb dl speeds and on my rezound with my radio layout I was still able to pull 6 mb dl on 4g. I was able to maintain 4g. I also had 3 bars of service and 4g and in the house she had 1 bar of service and 0 data. Just signal for a call or text.
Basically it was such a large difference that my parents, as much as they like the gs3, will not even be able to buy one due to signal alone. They are gonna try out some razr hds possibly next week so next time I'm down I fan kinda get a better comparison seeing as how my rezound is far from stock lol. Wife's gs3 is bone stock no root ota jellybean

[Q] AT&T Software Update

I'm curious if anybody else is having an issue with AT&T Software Update. I go into Settings, then click on AT&T Software Update, then of course "Check for Updates". It then spins on Checking for new software update now, for a few seconds, then goes back to the "Check for Updates" screen. But never reports back there are no updates available like before. Has been happening since Friday Afternoon.
Steps to solving this issue
Look at yourself in the mirror and say with pride att sucks and I will not wait for their update
Than after having an epiphany go root and flash a custom Rom
Breathe your first breath of freedom air
Sit back and enjoy
Answer me this, I wanna do CM10.1, but what is the best kernel for battery life?

Sigh. I've gotten 36 hours on cm10 with no special kernel or software.. Just stock cm10. I find it funny how people say sense has better battery life, then they complain about a 20 hour charge (which is still pretty good for using it) but I can easily get that 20+ hours on aosp

Are you LTE? Just curious, since we switched to LTE in the Portland Market, my battery has been atrocious...
LTE will always affect battery, specially since it goes in and out all the time

LTE doesn't affect battery life like you'd think. What do you mean it goes in and out all the time? I'm constantly on a LTE signal in the metro Atlanta area and it never goes out. Unless you are talking about when a phone call is made. It does switch to 3G for that but goes back to LTE as soon as I hang up. I actually get better battery life on LTE opposed to when I'm out of town and have no LTE. The whole LTE is bad for battery life is way over exaggerated in my opinion.

You just answered your own question...you live in a place with strong LTE so of course you're not "affected" but with soemone in a place with grey ares of LTE of course it will affect them ..think little one..not everyone lives in the same place with the same coverage

The post I quoted was a general statement that LTE goes in and out all the time, which it doesn't generally do.

Not sure what to make of this. This isn't my first rodeo. Not sure why you need to make yourself feel superior.
