Hey everyone! So I switched from an iPhone 4 to the One X about 2 weeks ago and so far, the HTC is a beast! ALMOST no regrets switching (although the google play store lacks in certain areas). However, I'm pretty big on customization and my iPhone was jailbroken and all tricked out with different themes. So far, I haven't found the degree of customization that was available on the iPhone for the android. For instance, one big thing I noticed is that the notification bar on sense (or in general actually) is tightly integrated with the ROM, so you would have to make your own ROM to customize the notification bar, as opposed to changing images on the iPhone.
There are quite a few launchers available on the Android, which makes changing icons, docks, and lockscreens more centralized than on the iPhone which is a nice plus. So what do you like to do with your android? Do you hook it up with some themes, spice things up a bit, or keep it stock/vanilla? I'm thinking of developing themes, that's why I'd like to get your feedback.
You don't need to create a Rom to theme an android device most of the status bar icons are in the systemui apk you can use an app like 7 zip open the apk as an archive navigate to res drawable-hpdi folder you find all the battery, data WiFi icons in there find the icons you wish to replace them with size and name them appropriately and drag and drop new icons into the folder then push apk back to the phone. You could also try a Rom like miui aokp or cm9 which has tons of pre made themes available.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely look into that later. I have tried the CM9 mod as well as the MIUI one, however they still have certain features missing (Sense camera along with 4G LTE). I'm just wondering what launchers/lockscreen apps you guys use and whether you pay for them or not. I have a GO Locker theme on the market right now, but I'm still wondering if that's the most popular lockscreen. I'd appreciate people's opinions on theming, whether they look at the play.store for them or elsewhere.
You could look in MyColorScreen.com to have an idea of what can be done on android customization. You will find some great work that people have done to there phones and what apps they use as well as wallpapers and icon packs.
Your welcome and I use adw ex launcher. Widget locker and MiLocker for lockscreen replacements. If you click the AAA logo in my Sig I'm a cofounder of the group android augmentors anonymous there you will find some great screenshots as well as resources that members have have shared.

Ah thanks, that's really what I was looking for. I've tried ADW EX launcher and I really liked it, but right now I'm using GO Launcher just because it has a few more effects features than ADW. And man, so many screenshots in your group! Probably one of the best Android groups I've seen on deviantart!

MIUI Style Launcher Localized And Compatible With All Devices.
If you’re anything like me, you can’t get enough of MIUI. It’s polished good looks and big bright icons are impossible to get out of your head (like that hot cashier at Walmart). Only problem is, the ROM is only available on a rooted devices. Since I have yet to take that plunge, I’ve resorted to other methods. Take this this beautifully styled MIUI homescreen replacement on XDA for instance. After finding this Chinese MIUI launcher in the Market called Tencent Desktop (from the developers of QQLauncher), XDA user Quinny899 set to localizing the app for all us westerners.
In what will no doubt be a make-or-break for most, just like the MIUI ROM, gone is the familiar Android app drawer you’ve come to know and love. But that’s exactly what gives this launcher a true MIUI experience. You’ll find all of the MIUI styled app icons, dock and folders and even a handy themeing engine. If you’re wondering how to get the transparent notification bar, well that’s for the more experienced rooted users.

Nice. Been wanting to try the ROM but my uptime has been rock solid so don't want to reboot.
This seems to be the updated version.

This launcher looks awesome! But the lack of an app drawer doesn't do it for me. Can't have pages and pages of apps, just doesn't feel right.
If they combine the look of this with the functionality of Go Launcher EX then we'll defo be onto the best launcher ever.
It is nice.
Trailblazer101's Modified TouchWiz Launcher
Hey guys, I know there aren't a lot asking for it... But I like to stick to the Touchwiz Launcher, even if it is only for the Weatherbug Widget
All of the ideas are based off of the work from pawitp's source files You can thank him personally if you want for his great work I just ported it over, which isn't as easy as you may think, because they are based off of Gingerbread, so the differences are major...
Also, just so you guys know, this is OUR original Touchwiz Launcher, not one from the Fascinate or any other Samsung phone... Otherwise, the "Calling" feature of the ticker would not work, and compatibility would be compromised...
Features it includes:
-Landscape Mode!
-Removed Notification Bar (Optional)
-Semi-Transparent App Drawer
-Blank Page-Indicators (Not Yet...)(Optional)
-No App Tiles (Not Yet...)(Optional)
-Alphabetical Sorting (Not Yet...)(Optional)
Now, on to the download links!

Sounds cool TB, but honestly I'm never going back to Touchwiz unless someone (probably you!) can get it to auto-sort the applications list without me having to use AppZapper or whatever it was called
i havnt used touchwiz since the day i got my phone im coming from sense and i even didnt like that after awhile and always usesd aosp roms all touchwiz does is bog the phone down and theres not even any good widgets besides the buddies now one and sorry for the rant i just hate touchwiz lol
Nuckin: that is a part of the more
And haha, I understand Bierce... The only reason I like it is because of the Weatherbug widget

trailblazer101 I love all of your work! Great themes and mods. I've tried most of them and they work and look great without any problem. But I have a quick question. Do you think it's possible to make the continuum have a fancy rotation animation? Just wondering. Keep up the good work.
Hello all,
New Galaxy S2 user here. Coming from a line of exclusively HTC Sense phones and ROMs.
I'm wondering if it's possible (and easy) to change the icons for default apps in CM9 or TW based ROMs? Specifically the "Messaging" icon - I hate the "smiley" face. Makes me feel 12 years old again.
I've done a few searches, but I'm not looking to replace the entire icon set or the ROM or theme... just one icon.

The hard way is to download the apk, open it up, replace the images with the ones you want, repackage it, and reinstall it. The easy way is to use a launcher that allows you to change the icon. I know Apex and Nova do, not sure about any others.

Also check out "Desktop Visualizer" in the market .
But as already mentioned ....the different launchers are the best & easiest way.
Holo launcher is another one.
Good Luck.

Go Launcher as well. Go, Nova, and Apex have the ability to use icon sets made for each other.
Hmmm... going to an entirely different launcher seems like overkill, but I guess if it works...
There used to be apps on the Market that would allow you to create shortcuts with different icons (BetterCut comes to mind, but the dev pulled it from the Market entirely).
If you don't want a new launcher, try Desktop Visualizer (though I have yet to figure out how to get it to use an existing icon pack). There are a lot of options in it and it's a great program.
I don't know about anyone else, but I have a BAD habit of wanting to change what my Atrix looks like, every 5 minutes. Sometimes its because I may not like the ROM and sometimes I may love the ROM...but need change. Especially, when I see a new ROM has been developed.
So I thought to myself...since I need change, how could I do that, without constantly flashing ROM after ROM. Stupidly, not thinking of this before - I have been playing around with home launchers.
I decided to make this post because I posted a few screenshots in the thread of my current ROM (Jellybeer) and I have had a lot of inbox messages asking what "theme" I was using. So I wanted to put this out there for those who have not discovered this home launcher. Now keep in mind, you can theme CM10 - and change the home launcher at the same time...which is awesome. Some home launchers even offer their own themes (which may change your icons, font etc) So lately, I have been spending more time combining themes of CM10 with different launchers, which led me to discover YANDEX.SHELL.
Its pretty basic, but offers some awesome visual effects (in my opinion). Which includes - its own dialer that you can use by default if you wish, a new look to your contacts, and my personal favorite - the carousel! The carousel is neat in the aspect that its animated. Its activated with the "pinch" gesture on your home screen and it shows all your home screens in a carousel that spins one screen at a time...animating any widgets you have on that screen (NOTE: Animated widgets are the widgets that are provided with Yandex)
The link and my screenshots are below. I hope this helps and let me know what you think! Cheers :good:

Hello all,
So I am coming from an iPhone. Back on android after 4-5 years. A lot has changed. I saw a lot of beautiful homescreens around and want to replicate those. But none of them have steps/settings/instructions.
I have Nova Launcher Prime installed and I know where to get Icon Packs. Can someone point me at any good resources/tutorials?
Cheers.

You can take a look at mycolorscreen for example. I'm personal using the launcher they published. It's called themer. You can find it on playstore.
You can't really 'theme' Nova Launcher, in that there isn't a button you press to apply themes. Everything is done manually.
You will probably need a combination of widgets, icon packs, and wallpaper to get the theme you want.
Nova Launcher is meant as a replacement launcher that is both simplistic and offering more options at the same time.

If your into themes, there are a lot of theme communities on Google+. Many of the themers including myself have been launching our themes to the Play Store. Mycolorscreen used to be popular, but its slowly dying and the site has been having tons of issues, not maintained from the looks of it. I would look at Google+, deviantart, behance, dribbble, etc. I always post instructions on the Play Store for my themes, it just varies from themer to themer on how detailed they want to be.
As far as apps go, Zooper widget is still popular for widget creation, but the new boy in town has been KLWP and KWGT, pronounced "Kustom Wallpaper" and "Kustom Widget". KLWP is a live wallpaper editor, essentially its a full theme creator with built in "one click" apply/backup. It allows for animations, formulas, touch input and much much more. The best part is that its a live wallpaper with low battery consumption that makes it super easy to setup themes without going through so much hassle of setting up everything. When it comes to theming nothing compares to KLWP out there right now. KWGT is KLWP's little brother which is focused on just widget creation but without the animation support since its not based on screens.
Nova is still the king of launchers in the enthusist area, since it sticks close to Googles design language but with tons of cool features.
I would say, go to the Play Store and find a themer's profile like mine or someone else, and click on one of their themes, and the Play Store will show similar apps on the Play Store which will give you a way to see themes similar to the one your selected. Zooper widget packs normally have zooper in the title of Play Store themes, same with KLWP and KWGT. So you can easily find themes by searching by those keywords. Google+....just search and you will find tons of people posting themes, tons of communities with FAQ and tutorial sections, so much help from other users and developers on there that its worth checking out.
Go to settings. Search themes. It will take you to a Samsung store with free themes. You can get many themes there thag will change settings... Keyboard... Messaging... Etc.. I personally like the material dark theme. You can search within the Samsung store.

Most of the teeming is done with widgets. The popular ones are UCCW and Zooper from the Play store. Once you have those installed you can search "zooper widget" or "uccw widget" and you will see different widgets for those apps.
There is a general Android Theme section on xda. There you will find all kinds of widgets and icons that aren't on the store. You can also browse other people's creations.

KWLP takes some getting used to but there are plenty of tutorials to get you started.
Check out google+ communities. There are loads there specifically for themes, icons and widgets.

I was too at first. Watch some tuts on Youtube, its the best theming thing around right now. No point in using anything else really.
Try these tuts by Brandon Craft, great place to start. Gosh, I didn't have any video tuts when I got started, it was hard to learn:
