Hey guys, I'm new here and I had a couple of questions before I bought a used Fuze. Right now I have verizon and I am switching over to att because my contract is over.
1. I am scared to buy a used fuze because if I buy a used one from someone and it is stolen can it still be activated?
I know that if I buy a verizon phone that is stolen then it can't be activated.
not sure how you handle it in usa but in europe I never had to activate any phone
just pop in the sim and type in the sim code
heard about the aktivating in usa in relation to iphones
The thing is that I'm gonna sign a 2 year contract with att, I just wanted to know if I buy a used phone and it is stolen will I still be able to use it.
I am not going to take a chance on buying a stolen phone if I can't use it.
Get a phone you know for sure isn't stolen, make sure it comes with all the accessories and box and then you can feel safe.
Do not buy a phone if you know it is stolen, that is both illegal and wrong.
if you buy a stolen phone which have been reported stolen the police give
the IMEI number hardcoded in the phone to the operators to be added to their
block of service list in the country
and other countries the operators have a working relationship with
Ya ok, then the best thing to do is buy a new phone.
I was saying that if I buy a used phone and it is stolen then I wouldn't be able to activate it.
I didn't mean to say I WAS gonna buy a stolen phone, no no.
Thanks guys. Goin to get it in an hour!
if you're signing a 2 yr contract anyways, why not get a subsidized phone straight from ATT. up until a few days ago, wireless att com website had the refurbished Fuze for FREE w/ 2yr contract. just checked website now and it is out of stock. they go in-out of stock so call in and ask.

Thats a deal, I'll call them and ask about it. Thanks
Here in the USA we don't have the IMEI blocking service, even if the phone was stolen you can still use it. When my Blackberry was stolen I called AT&T to report it and all they could do was block my PIN from the device and not the device itself. It's not like Verizon or in any other country.

verizon uses CDMA... if (for whatever reason) you need to change phones, you have to go through Verizon to activate the ESN(cdma version of IMEI) on the phone to tie to your Verizon account
for GSM, as long as the phone is unlocked, just slip the SIM card into in and the phone should work
one reason why i like GSM better: you don't have to do much to get a replacement phone
Just wondering if it's possible. What I was thinking is keeping the Infuse until the SGS II comes out and then selling the Infuse and with the cash I get for it pay for the SGS.
Do I need to do anything special to my Infuse before selling it (say on craigslist)? Never done anything like this before and was just wondering if it was possible.
So far this Infuse is rooted w/ Infused v2.1. Would I need to unlock the phone? Or is the phone pretty much unlocked already with the ROM I installed?

As long as you stay in contract and pay your bill for the 2 years you can do anything you want with the phone.
It's not unlocked unless you specifically have unlocked it. Rooting and loading a ROM does not automatically unlock it.
Depending on who you sell it to keeping it rooted might be good. That's a choice you have to make. When I sell a device I usually give the buyer the option to have it rooted or not.
What ever you do just make sure you remove all accounts from your phone, especially your gmail account.

Personally, I would suggest using Odin to go back to stock, then going in and formatting both the internal and external sd cards so that you remove any of your information on them.
Just my two cents.
i am from other country so do not know much about att contract policy.
i wanna know if eddie sell his phone and do not fulfill his contract then what will be consequence for buyer of phone as well as eddie?
is there any chance that phone's imei be blocked/blacklisted on account of no payment?
are you guys required return phone to att if you terminate your contract midway?
The contract is just an agreement to pay for the voice and data plan for two years, and there is a standard fee for breaking it (starts at $325, less $10 per month you've paid or something), and no obligation to return the phone in this case. I can't swear that AT&T won't blacklist the phone in the case of an unpaid bill, though it seems unlikely. I assume they would simply cut off service to the person's SIM and sic a collection agency on them.
Att's prepaid service, GoPhone, and devices, are unable to be resold. Contract phones can. Do not know why, but its stated in the terms of service for each.

You just have to pay an early termination fee, which is like $300 and goes down each month towards zero. It's basically a loan for the cost of your phone.
No matter what the phone is yours to keep.
I've sold about 5 phones over the passed few years and everyone I was under contract. I've never had an issue nor did the buyer. You don't have to do anything special. AT&T doesn't have to be notified for any reason. It's your phone. I've even told reps I was selling my phone while I was getting an upgrade and they didn't care one way or the other. Just make sure all your personal data it wiped. That's a must.

Ah ok thanks for the info. So Odin back to stock, then unlock and sell?
Been thinking about picking up one if these as a backup. The problem is that these phones can only be activated on postpaid verizon after 6 months of being active on prepaid. Sort of a deal dealer. Can this limitation be passed? Is there anyone who knows of a way to bypass this and just activate straight on my share everything plan?
Anyone?
I would like more information on this too.

since my GSIII decided to commit suicide and I didn't want to spend too much money to upgrade devices when all the new flagships are about to be released, I got myself a moto g.
Good news is that you can activate it directly onto a postpaid plan. I didn't give it a prepaid number to begin with, so I don't know if that would affect anything, but if your phone has no number, just activate it through *228. It failed the first time when programming, but the second time around it worked.

thank you for the response about this... can anyone else confirm this?
i called a verizon store earlier and was, of course, told that no you could not and it had to be on the 6 months, etc...
so if i pickup a moto g (verizon capable) from best buy, for $100, and just buy the phone and leave (they will let me?) i can then just *228 from the phone itself and port it onto my account somehow?
currently using an iphone 4 on verizon.

My process with getting the phone was walking into target and picking one up for $100, *228 with phone number you want to transfer and the account password (had to search for that) and it activated on the second try.
I most definitely went from numberless to postpaid plan.
Maybe I got lucky because the guy who got the phone for me wasn't the usual guy who takes care of phones. YMMV

I can confirm.
I just bought a Moto G from Best Buy. I turn on the phone, killed the activation. Because I have a business account, I logged into the web, put in the ESN number. Once I did this *228 and it activated with my number and 3g.
Groovy!
thats two confirms. One more and i sell my soul and gs3 for a G!
What is the account password. You mean to log into the online account?
Best Buy Verizon Moto G Prepaid - Activated Successfully on Contract
Another data point for a successful activation on a contract plan. Picked up the phone from Best Buy, bypassed the activation screen, dialed *228, and success! Both voice and data are functioning. Hopefully it's a permanent replacement.
For anyone who did this, did you have an old plan without data, and if so, did it force you to change your plan?

Well the person I'm trying to get this for doesn't have any data plan and uses an old plan from years ago and doesn't want to change. Sometimes the stupid carriers detect you went from a feature phone to a smartphone and tell you you have to upgrade your data plan or else.
Hope it works.
Make sure the network fine.

That I'm not sure about. Verizon may very well be able to tell if a newly activated phone is a "smart" phone and requires a data plan. There might be better/cheaper options for phones without data plans.
I just bought one for my Dad, His S3 crapped out and went to try and activate this moto g on my account which is not prepaid and it wouldnt do it not even ask for the #, so I called *22898 for prepaid activation and it says its LOCKED and to return it to the store. Wal-Mart must had not scanned it properly. So I`ll go back get that fixed and hope it can activate cause he can upgrade in 4 months but Verizon wont Budge so no point and buying a used phone for a lot of money for just 4 months.

I just used my upgrade to get a vzw m8 with the intention of selling it, then bolting to tmobile. I plan to be on the hook for my etf for 350, which I expect tmobile to eventually pay in 8 to 12 weeks.... Will my m8 get BLACKLISTED if I try this? I would assume not. My thinking is that's what the ETF is covering... Am I correct? I don't wanna sell a phone that has been blacklisted. Thanks

You should be good. I have sold phones purchased at on contract prices prior to my contract being up and had no issues.
I have 2 lines of service that I'm terminating and was gonna pay $100 a month until etf is paid by tmobile... Hopefully that will keep my phone's from being blacklisted!!
I thought when tmobile or even sprint now for that matter, dont they make you turn in your phone from your old carrier ? I assumed that was the case, so they can sell off your old phone to pay towards your old carriers etf they are paying off ? Am I wrong here because it makes sense that you would have to turn your phone in to them in the deal ?
The ESN will only be blacklisted if it is reported to be stolen or lost.
Some companies will not accept other companies' ESN (like Sprint and Verizon,) but with advance of LTE sim cards, this might be a moot point.
In any case, there's no reason why someone else cannot use your phone, unless you report it lost/stolen.
You have to trade in the m8 to T-Mobile in order for them to pay the etf. Since its brand new, I'd just return it to Verizon and cancel your contract outright. It will save you time and money in the long run.

What he said. You can't sell the phone because T-Mobile gets the phone, and you also have to buy one of theirs. Better idea - just stick with Verizon. Everyone's prices are going down these days, Verizon should be next. But even if you just stopped paying Verizon (without covering the ETF), then yes, your phone would get blacklisted. It is not just lost or stolen phones, it's unpaid bills that get your blacklisted too. Source: I deal with this stuff every day.

Are you serious? I don't even know what you're trying to ask about "blacklisting a SIM slot", they blacklist the IMEI of the phone (it doesn't matter if you use your Verizon HTC One M8 on AT&T or T-Mobile - regardless of what SIM is in your SIM slot, your IMEI is the same), which typically all of the major carriers share now. You go to make a call and it says "this phone has been blocked from network usage."

LTE is an evolution of GSM (more or less). LTE phones have an IMEI. Take out your M8 and go to Settings > About > Phone Identity and look at the third line, which is your IMEI (not your ESN), or look at the box and notice that you don't see an ESN (o an MEID), but you do see an IMEI. Then look at the 6th line, which is your ICC ID, AKA your SIM card number. The IMEI does not change (without flashing), no matter which SIM card you put in the phone, and it it what is used to identify your phone.
And yes, there is a global IMEI blacklist, it's even mentioned on the GSMA's website (and Verizon Wireless is a member of GSMA).

Take an lte sim and pop it into a phone that supports it.
Are you saying that sometimes it won't work because a carrier has blacklisted your phone?
I'm saying that in order for T-Mobile to pay your Verizon etf, you need to turn in the eligible device (m8). Without it, they will jot pay the etf. Verizon will also block the phone from being used on any major carrier.
Don't try to cheat this system. It will come back on you.

If verizon blacklists your imei number it wont work for basically any carrier in the USA unless the imei is repaired, but the phone blacklisted in the USA can still be used in other countries as no other countries care about an imei that is blacklisted in the USA.
Morning all!
I have a Verizon grandfathered unlimited data plan with one line which I curently have an S3 on. Over the weekend I bought a working S5 for $80 bucks. Guy said there was no issues with verizon. He even left sim card in it and I discovered it still has service. Well doing a little poking around I found in the 'my verizon' app that the phone upgrade eligibility is 02-2016.
I have an old verizon s3 thats dead with clean meid. Could that be used to swap with the current s5 to release the s5 from contract so that I could move it into my unlimited data account?
Or is there a better way to handle this? I get the impresion the previous owner is just going to abandon the verizon account so im not worried what happens on that end. Only that I have a clear phone that dosnt mess up my unlimited data.

All you really have to do is put your Sim in the new phone and everything will be fine.
The only way there could be a problem is if the guy you bought the phone from is still under contract and he stops paying the bill. Then they will blacklist the phone, but that won't do anything to your unlimited account, the phone just won't work any more.
I have zero expectation that he is going to continue paying the bill. That's why I had the idea of replacing the contract phone with an already dead one then I wouldn't loose out.

Well if his phone is paid for through contract completion or he just bought it out right, then you should be fine. I don't believe they have the right to blacklist a phone that's completely paid for in one way or another.
However, if it's not paid for and he stops paying the bill, there will be a problem.
If you put an old phone on his contract, I doubt that will help you. I would think they will blacklist the phone that's under contract regardless, because they have no right to blacklist your old phone.
That is just what seems logical to me, I don't know their procedure on this for fact.

I do believe you can swap phones while under contract. Ie if this S5 was dropped in water and died, I could obtain another verizon phone that wasn't under contract and swap the phones. It would seem to me then that would release the S5 from the contract but hold the S3 liable. If he defaulted on the contract then the S3 would get blacklisted because that's what's currently in the account under the contract. Or would they still blacklist the original phone even though its not in the account anymore? Anyone know the answer for certain?

you can defiantly swap phones on an account, weather they are paid for or not. i have done it many times. there is no issue, until you dont pay the bill.
i see your point with putting the old phone on, and you may be right. however, i just dont see how they could legally blacklist a phone that no money is owed on. i could be wrong though.
since you already bought the phone, i dont see where you have much options really, regardless of an accurate answer to your question.
just put his sim in your old phone, which will register it to his account. then you will just have to wait it out for a while and hope the s5 dont stop working.

Thank you for the input. If I knew for certain what the answer would be = I want a note 3or4 but the S5 will work great for the time being since $ is so tight. If the phone is going to get blacklisted with Verizon then it goes to the girlfriend to replace her iphone on Straight Talk. If I can get it cleared through verizon then it will be mine and the girlfriend gets my old S3....Hmm will I be able to move it to Straight Talk if blacklisted on verizon?
