even if they had the exact chipset I don't think that necessarily means the RIL code is the same. I doubt JB would work well on charge. We would have RAM issues more than likely. Like it feels like we do now (oh wait that's just facebook raping my phone for all it's worth).

didn't Samsung say TW for JB was supposed to be the least intrusive it's ever been? And they were worried whether 1gb of ram was enough for SG3 so they bumped it up to 2gb. I read it somewhere can't remember where .

I believe the biggest problem with ICS/JB on the Charge was the limited size of the /system partition, rather than RAM. AOSP JB uses 357MB of my system partition. I don't remember the partition size of the /system partition on the Charge, but I believe the size of the ROM would be a problem.

Well damn. I just looked at /system in Root explorer. Adding up the used and free space I get 333.12 mb of space.

good point with the system limitations I forgot about that. Of course we will never know if the charge can handle even a stripped down JB unless JT decides to scratch ICS and start up with JB . Which is probably another thing that probably won't happen as enough time was spent on ICS. Also, not having Samsung's "Our proprietary code could contain our technology" (yup their actual words) RIL doesn't help. :crying:

I don't know why you'd need that level of precision. I do surface mount soldering by hand all the time, and BGA re-work with hot air or IR at work. It's no longer exclusively the stuff of billion dollar companies. The act of desoldering a chip and soldering another one in its place would probably be the easy part.
Why do you need more internal storage Rockerboy? Get an SDcard.
I do got an sd card 16gb but some appz cant go on sd card nd my internal memory is running out.

To do this you need two things.
1) A SOLDERING STATION, not just a soldering iron
2) god-like steady hands. <--- Might as well be a Marine Sniper
As far as I am concerned the memory controller (ala Northbridge.) should be able to recognize and compensate for a increase in memory as if it were a regular ram upgrade on a PC. As long as we aren't talking hundreds of gigs increase it should work fine, no?
This is not feasible for you to do on your own. If you have to ask, you can't do it. WTF do you have installed that takes up 500MB that can't be moved? there's only a handful of apps that can't be moved.
Wow, 500MB full? That seems unlikely if you've moved every app you can to your SD card and cleared your caches.
I haven't tried it on the Sidekick, but if you're running a custom ROM have you looked at using CustomMTD? That would free up some space (I use it on my G1)
CustomMTD is designed for HTC phones that use the MTD filesystem, rather than the RFS or EXT4 partitions used by our phones. That said, with some hacking/modding it would be possible to get something similar working on our phones, but I'm not the person to work on such a project.

[ROM][KANG][JOP40D]CM10.1 Port[Build 1][11/30/12]

This is an early release of CM10.1, so several CM features are missing and this is a WIP.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible for anything bad that happens as a result of flashing this, do so at your own risk.
Working:
Phone Calls / SMS
Wifi (doesn't seem to be scanning but it will connect if you manually add a network)
Bluetooth (appears to be working but haven't had a chance to test)
Audio
HW Buttons / Backlights
HW accel.
Sensors
Not working:
Data (obviously)
MMS
Camera
HDMI
GApps: http://goo.im/gapps (Use 4.2)
Build 1 [11/30/12]: http://androtransfer.com/get.php?p=sbrissen/Charge/cm_charge-ota-eng.sbrissen_42_1.zip
Install:
Copy ROM/GApps to sdcard
Reboot into CWM
Flash ROM

Yeah I don't think they want to keep this phone going. They want us to buy new ones. I'm going to have to wait for income tax refund time. That's OK, I really like my phone with Tweaked on it.
The thing I think is funny is the iPhone commercials keep bragging about stuff my poor old Charge already has.
WOW!! I leave the droid charge community for a few months and this is what happens??? Simply incredible. As I have relegated my charge to WIFI only duty this is nearly perfect. The only issue is that it never actually boots. The boot animation just keeps on going and going and going. Does the file system need to be converted to EXT4 before flashing? I'm using the latest 0302 recovery too. Thanks in advance!
Nevermind. Got it up and running. Seems like the recovery updated itself somehow (shrug) and flashed it using the brand new CWM looking recovery and it's working. Can't wait to play around with this later.

Just wondering (I'm not a developer or anything), but to get DATA working couldn't we throw in the Factory Test.apk? I was looking at what was running, and it always is. Then I looked at what it is and it all has to do with the RIL.
I am actually looking into trying this build! I usually have Wi-Fi wherever I go so DATA isn't too big of a problem. If it does ever get fixed I believe this would be the Charge's lifesaver.
Any news on the issue that people are having getting it to install?

FactoryTest is in this build, it is required for secPhone.apk to work. I'm not actually sure if it helps or not but its in there. I'm not sure on the boot issues, after installing I would just make sure to wipe data and it should be fine.

RAM Help

Can you guys help me? I think my Walkman Z's broken. I went into the running applications menu and checked how much RAM is being used. The Z's supposed to have 1GB of RAM. It showed up as 97MB used and 247MB free. This doesn't add up to 1GB and it's worrying me, I know that the system uses some RAM but 700MB? That doesn't seem right.
Thanks!
I have no idea if something is wrong with your phone.
But.. you can always try to do a factory reset. It´s a good start and then check if there is an update to your phone.
Dont forget to back up your stuff.

But ohhoho a phone isnt a PC it doesn't have a bios that would recognise the ram first of all or that its even gone. All the parts on the phone work in harmoney and when something internal breaks the whole phone does. And the ram is built into the motherboard so that would mean you have a broke motherboard. Do you really think the phone will function then? Please try to use a little sense lol.

I'm actually using some sense. Ram chips do go bad. If there's disk 512mb chips n one went bad then he wouldn't have 1gb ram. They go bad for many different reasons thus not affecting the motherboard. The only problem is you can't swap out ram like you can with a PC.
You say a cell phone ain't a PC but android is a form of Linux. Linux doesn't need a bios to work. Allot of devices out there run a form of Linux without a bios. Wi-Fi routers, cable boxes, ps3, blu-ray players, Nintendo Wii , etc etc.......
I've had devices where the ram has gone bad n they still worked. Just not at a 100%. I'm speaking for experience n knowledge. I'm a developer for android. I work with the ROM n kernel source code. All the devices I have worked on I haven't seen no fail safe in the android source code that will prevent the phone from booting. I have seen the code that loops at the ram n reports the ram found.

it works similar to how windows uses drivers to communicate with the hardware, it is basically the same way linux is able to allow the android operating system to communicate with the hardware layer of your network radio, incompatible RIL/baseband can cause dropped calls etc, if it errors out.

hello...
what's going on everyone... first off just want to thank everyone for their hard work on these forums. thought the whole rooting/modding thing seemed harder than it looked, but when i finally got down and dirty, it reminded me of when i modded my psp a few years back!
anyway, just reading this thread and decided to dl getRIL, and it does say my RIL/baseband don't match. i'm running the g2x with cm7/mazout's 2.6.32.60 GB kernel and the "new baseband fix" after having the popping/"hash hash" sound (can't recall where the thread is off the top of my head...). getRIL says i'm running v20c, i was under the impression that this setup was "v21y-ish"? i've had this setup for a few days now, and the only issues i've had were random reboots/shutdowns (85% positive it's a battery issue... it looks like it's swelling!). i switched from cm10.1 JB (yesss! JB on my g2x...waitaminit... can't call or text?!?!?! aarrgggh!) to EB ICS 4.0.4 for about a week to my current setup (as i like having HWA and a video camera.) but with my current setup, no data/radio issues so far...
basically the point is: should i mess with my baseband or leave it as is? again, thanks!!!

It's the same as updating drivers on your computer, you either want to, or you dont. But if you start having issues with connectivity, it is advised that you update the RIL first.
Mine didn't seem like it had any issues either but I did it anyway in the hopes that I could get better battery life, call quality, etc. Haven't really noticed any improvements yet lol.....

question: why are phones sold with unmatched modem/RIL?
Neither of mine were?
Sent from my SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 4
It is almost always best to use the RIL that matches the software version it is meant to work with. The RIL is responsible for interpreting commands between the Android kernel and the hardware radio/modem that enable the phone to work as a cell phone. One of the reasons that the G2X won't work as a cell phone with ICS is the incompatibility of the GB RIL with ICS and no G2X specific RIL for ICS is available.

It basically scans your storage volumes and graphically shows what's taking up the space and lets you delete UN-necessary stuff (if you dare!).

Yes it is called disk usage and if you have root you can view system files as well. Strangely there is well over 400mb of free space in the /system folder. Anybody know why?
