SD Writing Speeds - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new to this device, and my main problem is that for some reason I can only transfer files to my SD card at around 800k/sec.
I know it's not my PC, I'm using my Samsung stock USB cable, and with my old G2X, using this same cable, I would get around 1.8mb/sec.
is this an issue with the Nexus S or just the way things are with the phone?

No - it seems to be a common thing.
Mine is transferring all my movies back on after a fresh wipe and new ROM at 559kb/s right now.
For some reason it was about 1.2 MB/s last night, but it is slower right now.
I have tried putting it into aeroplane mode, but it has made no difference. I have also tried google searching and reading other forums and it seems to be a common thing with the Nexus S...
Let me know if you find out a way to improve things!

Damnit, talk about a let down. I have a 32gb SDHC sitting at home but I don't think we can swap out the internal storage, can we?
I know on the HTC HD7 there was a way to remove the internal SD card and put in something larger.

If you are on AOKP ROM, go to Settings >> ROM Control >> Startup tweaks. Enable SD Boost and bump up read ahead value.
Otherwise, install ROM Toolbox from Play Store, on the Performance panel, bump up SD Card Boost value. It's reset at boot unless you tick apply on boot.
Goodluck.

Awesome, I'm on RemICS at the moment, but still in the process of figuring out which ROM works best for me.
I ran across some script that increases the SD cache size. Right now mine is set to 1024, but the scripts go all the way up to 4096. I'm not too sure how that translates to the actually mb/sec but I'm going to give this a shot.

If you need faster transfer speeds for larger files, you're better off using recovery. Its an issue with ICS and that is what I've been using for large files.

oohhh yea I know what you're talking about. So it's faster when you mount through CWM?

Yup. Semi fixed issue with ICS. Depends on a few things, like ROM base and kernel used. Just mount in recovery and enjoy normal speeds.

[Q] Touch Screen Responsiveness NS4G

Hi guys, I've noticed a few bumps with my NS4G and it -seems- to be software-related.
Most of the time when I plug my phone into the computer the touch screen gets really wonky, as if way uncalibrated. (This happened on two other android phones as well) I tried uninstalling and re-installing anything android related and just installing the Android SDK which helped temporarily.
Another issue I notice is that pretty often the screen will lose responsiveness around the S on the keyboard (the problem persists in the same area if the keyboard is gone). Usually I have to reboot to solve that problem
I'm on CM7 latest nightly (It's been doing this for a few versions) and Mart1x BFS 1.4ghz OC smartass governor. I'm also using the recommended settings in Proton Voltage for undervolting.
Anyone have any ideas?

echo 13 > /sys/devices/platform/s3c2440-i2c.2/i2c-2/2-004a/noisethr
I had similar issues and came up with this. I have ZERO issues with responsiveness and this is rock solid. Been using it for 2-3 weeks now with no issues. Hope this helps. On a side note I never had issues while phone was plugged in... But did notice a lack of responsiveness on screen. thx
The file below you will have to place in system/etc/init.d folder using root explorer (make sure to mount while in RE). Change settings you see above hit save exit and reboot phone. After that your screen should be more responsive. I know mine is. GL and let me know how this works out for you.

If your going to do that here is another link below but with the modified settings already set but ya you should be able to adb. I dont see why not.

Also you can download 4share from Android market and then within the app search for root explorer and dl.
I'm just curious, what exactly does this edit and how reversible is it? I've never seen it before, so I'm a little skeptical.

[Q] Camera crashes phone

Droid Charge, rooted, PBJ 7-31 SV Kernel, SD Speed Increase
I've only had this phone a couple weeks, but I think this is a new problem. When I try to take a picture, the phone freezes up. You hear an abbreviated shutter sound, the flash fires, and the screen goes black. None of the vol+ power, vol+ home power, etc; do anything. The only way to get the phone working again is to pull the battery.
In doing some simple testing, it only seems to do it when the flash is enabled. The camcorder works fine also.
Sound familiar to anyone?

its a known issue afaik, probably kernel related but don't quote me on it... haven't heard of a fix aside from maybe reflashing/re-odining your rom
Not happening to me, can we get some other info like your kernel, rom and free space?
Beamed from my Droid Charge using the XDA premium app
I have the same problem. It only seems to happen when the battery gets low, around 30% and the flash on. Pull the battery and restart the phone shows it did not take the picture.
I am running Eclipse 1.31, peanutbutta jelly time kernal, and I have 28.91gb free space.
That is a sign that you are undervolting too aggresively.
Elucid, im not sure thats it either. I've taken hundreds of pics with my phone. This morning while taking pics of my kids for first day of school. The cam crashed my phone. I mean super crashed. Pulled battery and reset, and my acore, swype, and android keyboard were gone. Had to completely ODIN my phone.
I have had mine crash and when I recovered i started getting all kinds of force close errors and had to odin back to stock.
I was running gummycharge with several versions of the peanutbutter jelly. I went totally back to stock and then flashed humble. Humble seems to have this problem less, but I'm not 100% sure.
I have found that the crash usually occurs when the phone is multitasking. Running pandora and taking a picture will ALWAYS crash. Running Barnacle Wifi and taking a picture crashes as well.

That seems plausible. How do I check the voltage? I'm running PBJ 8-7, have not made any changes. Should I install SetCPU?

Guys, I really need some help here. Is there another kernel I should try? I'm on the latest PBNJ (not OC). I want to stay rooted but I might have to go back to stock if that fixes the camera problem. your phone might just not like undervolting... I believe imnuts' PBJ voodoo kernel is set at -50mhz across the board which is really conservative, you could always disable lagfix and use his non-voodoo PBJ kernel

I am running the voodoo flavor of PBJT (0730) without the camera issue. I had a couple of freezes and lost root a couple of times on the 0807 release. Wiping cache from CWM fixed the lost root temporarily and going back to 0730 stabilized everything again.
FWIW, there have been several posts on VZW's forums about the camera
issue on presumably stock phones.

I may have found out what the problem is. I was having the same problem and it seems to be the sd card. It HAS to be the Samsung sd card. When i took my phone back they gave me a new one and it had the Samsung sd card inside when i checked it. It also solves the HD video problem too. Hope this helps.

I think he means when they switched it out, they gave him a Class 4 sd. The original Charges came with a Class 2 card, and at some point they switched to shipping them with a 4.

There is an extensive thread about this on the Verizon forums, with no valid solution being proposed. Some are arguing that its a defective battery, which would make sense.
I'm at the end of my rope with this problem. If this thing locks up one more time when I'm trying to get a shot of my kids, I'm going to be looking at a warranty replacement.

1. Install or move a program to your SDCard, icon stays on phone, but phone thinks program has been uninstalled ! (This apparently was the same problem the original Atrix 4G also has)

No.. internal. Look at full specs on PhoneArena and GSMArena.
Built-In Storage : 8192MB
Correct me if I'm wrong .. thats 8GB .. not 4GB.
Attached are 2 screenshots .. one from PhoneArena, other from GSMArena.
I have issues with bluetooth when connected to my car stereo. Most of the time, occasionally it works just fine, when listening to anything by bluetooth in my car I get drop outs in the audio that last any where between .5 seconds and 3 seconds. They sometimes happen in a pattern of a long drop followed by a short drop withing .5 seconds. It does not seem to effect phone calls but that leads to another problem.
While listening to an internet radio station and a call came in while in the car the radio (iheartradio) kept playing after I answered the call from the car stereo touch screen. I had to kill the radio app in order to keep the audio out of the call. The other side told me they heard my radio over the phone.
Random reboot
Random reboots while listening to any audio app (dogcatcher, Pandora, stock music player). I am using wired headphones and the phone will just randomly reboot. Very annoying
Interesting, any certain amount of time before it reboots? I use xiialive lite with zero cut outs or reboots. Been rocking it for awhile, are you streaming and recording at the same time?

Those are the last two places I'd expect spot on info from.
Looking at the official Motorola website under the specs for this phone, it does list 8gb as the internal storage capacity.....but it also has a footnote that states:
Available user memory varies due to the configuration of the phone, which varies by service provider.

So I decided to check AT&T's website and found that it says "up to 8gb"
So based on the above listed information on the two websites that really matter, it's safe to assume that the reason it's not showing 8gb in available internal storage is due to AT&T's configuration.
I saw that also.. but the fact is.. we can't use it. If you go to "Settings" "Storage" .. look under Application Storage. Mine states 4.13GB .. now here is the bug .. install 500MB of stuff (anything) .. once you reach 500.. watch your phone state you're out if memory !!!!
You can't move your apps to the SDCard, because, if you have to reboot your phone .. it will keep the icon on your screen/listing .. but the phone will come back with an error stating it was uninstalled .. yet all you did was move it from Phone to SDCard.
Those are 2 major bugs that they really need to resolve .. yet the funny thing is, the original Motorola Atrix 4G had the same bugs.. you'd think they would have learned from there first mistake.

I understand and know that, but that wasnt the issue I was addressing. It was your claim that the phone is only reporting half of available internal storage, just 4 gb of 8gb, which simply isnt true. But you can bring up other unrelated issues and ignore that if you want, lol.

I'm pretty sure it's 6gb internal memory + 2gb on the included micro sd card. Of that 6gb, 1+gb is being used by the OS and pre-loaded apps. The phone seems to load everything that's downloaded onto the 2gb sd card, so it will fill up pretty quick.

When you installing a program and the phone alert that "there is on room left", then you can re-install this program again, then it will be successful.

Atrix 1 vs Atrix 2
Can't really complain but I found this funny...
I have both Atrix 1 and 2, Atrix 1 has the CM7 rom and scores 6000+ using AnTuTu Benchmark, Atrix 2 is obviously stock and only scores around 4000 using the same benchmark.
I will try to wait patiently for movement in the rom arena. It's hard, I'm a flash junkie.

[Q] phone overheats with ROMs

Hi everyone,
I'm having overheating issues with the custom ROMs put up in the forums here. It's really frustrating because I love the interface but I can crashes and overheats pretty often.
I was running a rooted i727r with official ICS, I used ROM manager to flash to paranoid android ICS and JB, I also tried liquified (I think that;s what it's called) and everything runs great except I sometimes get overheating (up to 45 degrees celcius) at which point the phone just shuts itself off. And the worst part is that the battery gets super drained when that happens. I have done nothing to trigger and has happened when it was in my hand as well as in my pockets when in sleep mode.
I don't want to run official ICS, so if there is a solution, I'd be really grateful!
Also on an unrelated note, I can't get swype to work on these custom roms, does anyone have an idea?
Thanks in advance!
Use clockwork mod or twrp to flash and if you haven't yet, try your roms with the stock kernel.
Don't use rom manager and do some reading.

ROM Manager can and will brick your phone if you use it to flash ROMs on a Skyrocket. Read up and learn before doing things like that.
Stay on stock rooted and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, switch to a TW-based ROM and use the stock kernel. If your phone is still cool, then move with caution into AOSP territory (which seems to be where you want to go) and consider UC'ing/UV'ing AFTER you've read up on them and understand the possible side effects.
my phone gets hot sometimes, but usually when i'm browsing for a while. doesn't seem to be overly hot though but definitely hot to the touch

I don't mean to sound defensive, but I've read all the stickies...they tell me how to do things, not WHY to do things (kinda like a recipe book). I might be ignorant in the technicalities, but I know my way around following instructions. Telling me to just READ is not helping me, telling me WHAT to read or WHERE to go is better, and I'll be glad to read.
I took your many advices and flashed back to the semi-official ICS using the CWM recovery. The overheating and crashing problems are no longer happening, at least not during all of today which is a good sign in my eye. I still don't have an indication why it wasn't working when I used to the ROMs provided in the development section. I follow the instructions to the tee and I still had the problem (even when I used the CWM instead of ROM manager pro).
I was having severe heating probs. I never let it get so hot that it autoshutdown but I'd do it manually. I found that there was a serious wakelock happening and even while awake media scanner was going nuts. On it's own it just chewed up the battery but combine a high useage app with media scanner and the phone got hot. I ended up doing a stock rom install via Odin, reformatting my ex sd card. It's been good ever since. You haven't been using Zedge by any chance??

Could be. Try pulling everything off your sd card and put on your pc. Format the card and put everything back on.

It is the Media card...a couple of my friends have had the overheating issues on their devices. I would suggest formatting the media card on the PC as previously stated. If that fails then try another SD card since it could just be the SD card.

I've ran plenty of custom roms even OC to 1.9ghz but the phone will get hot no matter what with heavy wifi usage or talking I must say.
With that said, the custom rom will most likely not help unless you aim for roms that aim for that kind of purpose.
Others may beg to differ but that's my 2centz.
Alright, so I did what some of you said and disabled the media storage at start up. The crashes and overheating are fixed! But, now I can't see my pictures that I stopped in the external sd card when I'm browsing for them through my files or through the gallery. I can, however, see them through third party file browsers. It's there a way that I can at least see them them in my gallery? I tried f5 but it didn't work.
Thanks in advance

Issues with Galaxy S Blaze 4G (Help!)

Hey guys,
It has only been three months since I purchased the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G, and I currently have a few issues that really are bugging me out. I will bullet them out to make it clean and easier for you guys to read and figure out.
ALSO -- My phone is rooted, rocking a custom rom (AOKP JB Blaze 4G: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1989825)
1. Every time I take a screenshot, picture, download something, or just about any piece of data, my phone for some reason saves it all to my internal storage device, which is barely 1 GB. I have a 32GB MicroSD card, and bought the SD card with the intention that I can save all my data to that, never having to worry about my 1GB internal storage getting full. Is there any way to fix this? My phone is rooted, rocking a custom ROM, and I really don't see how this can be an issue. Can someone help me to fix this issue? I am a real noob when it comes to stuff like this, so I would appreciate detailed instructions!
2. My phone currently has an issue where every time I get a notification, the 4 LED touch-buttons on the bottom of the phone start blinking. I prefer it to not blink at all (as I would instead like to save precious battery life).
3. Even though its only been three months (less than a month with the new ROM) I noticed that the battery life is not too amazing, it drains out REALLY fast for some reason. All I really do on my phone is web browsing and visiting a social media app (facebook, twitter, etc...) and that's really it. Is there a way to possibly fix this as well? Could it be the ROM
4. When I drive, I often use my phone as a GPS, and what's funny is, even though the phone is plugged in (and technically charging), the battery drains out. I don't know how that is possible, as the phone is plugged in and charging through my car. Could it just be that this phone was never meant to be used as a GPS? Or is this another problem that can have a workaround to?
Anyways, that is my list, I'd really appreciate your help to solving all those issues, as I use this phone as a daily driver, and need all of the phone's functions working without problems.
Thanks!

Im new here also as of today. Im sorry your having issues with your phone and the rom. I have been doing alot of research on this phone we have as Im still stuck on Gingerbread. I just went off contract from Tmobile and recently rooted it. Getting ready to upgrade the rom.
I have read in some posts that the JB rom did have some problems with recognizing SD cards. Seems to me that I read that this was changed in a later release. I wish I could find that thread again and show you but it escapes me. Is this a stock ROM for JB that you are using?
I do have a question for you. I want to upgrade from gingerbread and thinking CM10. However, I do have to make sure speakerphone works. Any problems there?
I would guess at this point that you should try another ROM.

1:Your going to have to flip the external and internal SD card in order to fix that. I remember there being an xposed module for that.
2: pulse notifications are enabled. I haven't run 4.1 in a long time but I think it's under the display settings.

How exactly would I flip the external and internal SD card? I am unaware of how to do this by all means.

Ok, Most likely the vold.fstab file lists the mounting points for the phones filesystem. It will probably be a text file and I would suggest making a backup copy before modifying it. Otherwise you could really screw things up.
I have not viewed this file yet because I dont know of the exact location yet. I found a link but Iam a new user and not permitted to post it. Do a search for vold.fstab and you should easily find a link for editing it.
Basically, Your going to edit the fstab file and change the settings for mounting the sdcard. I would think a reboot of your phone will probably be the last step.
Hope this helps, From one learning to another

I'd forewarn you that the sdcard swap is for kitkat and the op is using AOKP 4.1.2

Sorry for being late on this one, I am in the middle of exams and have been really busy.
Is there any sort solution to this that is newb-friendly (step by step), would be awesome to use my external SD card for its full use.

In the previous page wollieburger posted a link to edit the correct files. A really good guide (one post) on how to do it.

When I am changing the input from 0 to 1, the file is unable to save.
EDIT: It works now! Thanks for the post, and apologize again for being so late on this!
Sorry for the multipost, but I was wondering if someone can still help me out with my other stuff I am trying to figure out:

You should be able to disable the flashing LEDs (also known as pulse notifications) through the display settings.
I'm not certain if there were device settings in the 4.1 era.
Battery life on 4.1 was garbage. I could only imagine the GPS drain.
4.3 had the best.

The GPS navigation on the blaze takes a lot of battery. If you have the phone plugged in the battery won't drain as fast as compared to not having it plugged in.

To be honest, I never had a battery life problem on 4.1.2, one reason is I didn't use Google Apps (I had gapps package installed, but the minimal package), I also followed this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357417
If you like push notifications from Gmail and other Google dependent apps, ignore that thread. Otherwise, it will improve your battery life. The other reason was I never ran cm10. I ran @thomas.raines ParanoidAndroid 4.1.2. Imo, the best cm10 based rom the Blaze had. But that's MY opinion. He's taken down the link, maybe you can try and chase him down and see if he'll re-upload it for you...
