Blurry Gallery - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys
i have a samsung omnia w running mango(AKA: Focus flash i667) and i have noticed that photos and pics i have synced to the phone are blurry. even if its native 800 x 480 pixels. if i place the same image as wallpaper, its sharp
any ideas?

Are you sure the photo is fully loaded (usually only happens when viewing something from cloud storage)?

yes its on the phone, it was synced via zune, the slightest pinch make it all sharp again

no one?

Yeah, this is my experience too. My explanation is that the gallery uses compressed thumbnails, and only when you zoom in does the full picture get loaded.

thats exactly what i thought, i did the reg hack to show the device as portable device in windows explorer in an attempt t see if there we thumbnails created in the sync process, found nothing , so it must be stores somewhere else? :C. i am guessing this is the fault of the sync process, i did copy the image straight into the portable device via windows explorer, by passing zune, and the image looked sharper
but when you do that, you wont see the thumbnail preview when you go into gallery
any one know of any zune hacks to create high quality thumbnails?

ok so here is my fix,
1. Convert the phone to a portable device
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/11/18/use-your-windows-phone-7-device-as-a-portable-usb-drive/
2. Copy over images straight to your device, without using zune. you might get a warning saying image may not open on your device, ignore it and copy it anyway
Note: do not have the image too big, try somewhere below 1600x1200, as too big an image will case it to look weird. hope it helps, and let me know it goes guys

The default location for pictures taken with the stock camera app is on the sdcard in the folder named: /DCIM/Camera
Did you do anything like root your phone via the oem unlock procedure before the pictures disappeard?
Happens to me quite often, just close the gallery and then re open, or reboot the phone. That has worked for me every time.

I've switched to using Quickpic. Much faster than stock gallery. just no fancy 3d effects.....but i never really liked it anyway.
Fortunately (or unfortunately) a report has been filed and many people share similar issues with the Gallery. Please visit the report and star: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=13419

Camera Burst Mode Folder Structure

I can't figure out how the phone decides where to place a string of photos taken in burst mode. When I connect my phone to USB and look in the folder where the burst photos are located, there are multiple folders that have already been created. Within those random folders are where my burst photos are located, but in no particular order. This makes it a pain to go through and transfer them all to my PC b/c I'm constantly having to hunt down the photos in random folders.
I hope I'm just being ignorant to how it works, but any help is appreciated.

That seems to be the way it works. From what I can tell, the storage is meant to be temporary...you're supposed to pick the best shot after the burst, then it dumps the rest. I guess if you want them all, you have to do a little hunting.

Not the answer I was looking for, but I'm afraid you're right.

I use dropbox to auto upload my pictures, and it also uploads all the burst pictures in order. Makes it easy to keep all pics or select just the ones I want to keep on the PC.

If they have a common naming convention, then you could hook up your phone to a computer and do a search via filename (or date) then copy the images elsewhere

Strange picture i didnt take is in my dropbox

Today I discovered a picture in my dropbox camera upload that I did not take.
Viewing the file on my computer it is just a png file with a statusbar without clock.
Now on my S3 there has always been a clock, so it's not a screenshot I have taken.
On my S3 the image is quite different.
Immediately when opening (before app renders the image completely), I get a picture with a clear motive.
After rendering, the image is more distorted.
This is only viewable on the device, not on a computer.
Sorry about the motive in this image, there is some brat in a back seat of a car waving at the camera with his middle finger.
I would love to blur the image, but I take my chanses uploading it as an original. You have been warned.
I DO NOT know the people on this picture.
Please share your theory or ideas! I am also happy to answer any questions you might have.
All I want for this thread is to understand why these people are appearing on my phone.
Original file attached to this post.
Will upload the other images in next post
Screenshots from S3:

Ok so I have a theory. I bought the phone used. I formatted all storage before use, but this might be some resilient file that got caught by Dropbox and is now corrupted because it was supposed to be deleted. What I think is strange is that I never saw the picture on my phone or in my Dropbox before yesterday. Yet the date for the file is dated back in 2011. Both capture date and upload date. The meta data (AFAIK) in the original file says the image has been captured with the s3 as a photo, not a screenshot. Not sure if I want to settle with my own logic here...

[Q] Help! Wont read saved Pictures

So, Heres the deal. Oneplus, rooted (has been for a while) Currently on Cyanogen 5.0.1 but the problem started before this. I tried to use a different rom thinking that it might work but didn't so I had the same problem on the stock rom. Anyway, the camera takes a picture and saves it. Gallery recognizes said picture and everything is fine. I download a picture from the web. It will not show up in the gallery at all. Or google photos. I move it to another folder, any folder. nothing. I use a file explorer app, any app, and i can see and view the picture, but gallery still does not recognize the picture. Any idea why? they are saved as JPG. Please ask any more questions. I have not tried a reset yet. This started after i was gone for a month and the battery died.

Deleted a whole album of photos by accident.

I thought I was deleting only one photo but deleted a whole album which was kind of frustrating. I was in album mode in the gallery and selected the album which only shows the first picture. That, and the fact that the confirmation dialog for both deleting an album and a single photo says "are you sure you want to delete this item?" make it confusing.
They should make it clearer that you are deleting a whole album by saying in the dialog "are you sure you want to delete this album of n pictures?" and making the album thumbnail look different than an individual picture.
I am not sure if this is an Alcatel thing or an Android thing but two small changes to the ui could prevent loss of important photos. They could also offer a recycle bin feature that you could turn on or off which would be nice.
Otherwise I love this phone. Truly an amazing device for $250.
Try another photo manager app. Made the same mistake myself. Luckily at the time I did it, I had the photos already copied to a PC and there wasn't many photos involved, maybe a dozen in the album. I no longer use the stock gallery. I now use Google Photos. There were a couple others I tried to use, but they wouldn't offer the capability to delete off the SD card, couldn't get privilege to delete.
If its that much of an annoyance. I always use 'quickpic', its the best gallery app for android IMO.
If you have a windows PC and the folder was on an external card, get the card connected somehow to the PC (not in the phone, but in an adapter so it can get a drive letter). Install the free version of Recuva and do a scan on the card. It should be able to recover most if not all files if nothing was written on top of them.
