I listened to my music on the Sky ICS GS3 music player fine on my way home yesterday and when I went to listen to my playlist today nothing would play. The timer woould sit at 0 no matter where it was in the song. After a little bit I went to All Songs and I noticed that each song had a second copy. A song would show up as 2 files that were seemingly identical except the first file was blank as I described above, while the second was normal and intact. All the music in playlists were the blank copied versions though. Has anyone else had this happen or know how this could of happened so it doesn't happen again? Should I remove all music from my SD and reload?
Why wouldn't you try that? Gotta start somewhere, ya know...
Dump your music, open the app, see what you have left. Research and dump whatever's left.
Reload music to SD via Windows. See what you have in the app.
Rinse/repeat till you figure it out.
Worst case scenario, you need to wipe your phone and reload the rom. I've had crap left over on my emmc that caused oddball issues on the next flash. Gallery finding every album cover, wifi drops, etc..
Can say the latest ICS works perfectly after a full wipe and reload. Redid my TB backups too.

Is it just me or are other people having problems playing MP3s ?
Have just tried playing some from my SD card, they play for 29seconds and then advances to the next MP3, anyone else found this problem ??
Cheers
Like I have tried saying before - this is to do with the application 'close all programs'.
Don't know why - only happens after you use that program without a soft reset.
SO you are saying if I don't ugo into the memory area and do a close all that windows media player will work fine ??
Or are you talking about the program that is bundled in Midgets apps ?
If you have a battery meter program, try disabling it, and see if that helps.
I use iLauncher for my meter, and there is an option for that to use polling instead of whatever the normal way was, and it fixed the issue. It also fixed the issue by disabling the meters totally.
Nope not got much else installed really, PIE and Opera are the two apps I installed, oh and Midgets extras pack !!
i would have to agree with alan... i have just installed a bettery meter.. and since i have installed i have had the same problem... guess im just going to have to uninstall the battery meter when i want to listen to tunes... no biggy!!
if I am not wrong WMP problem has nothing to do with the battery. the problem playin files for few sec the jumping to next comes and geos. you may likey ones you start the WMP the player plays normal until next time it apears again
I know it has nothing to do with the battery, but, iLauncher battery meter standard settings, WMP skips, turn off meter, WMP plays, switch meter to polling method, WMP plays, switch back to normal, WMP skips.
Like I said its that program that auto closes all programs in the memory, I think you get it from 'midget_1990_tweaks_and_hacks'. Same program is included in Helmes 3.5 version 1 ROM.
I know this cause I noly get this problem if I use that app. If you don't use this app then its another issue. Just sharing my findings. Hope it helps in some way or at least rules out an app.
I agree with mrbrightside, it works fine after a softreset AFTER you use that 'Close Apps' program. If no soft reset is done when Close Apps is used, the problem appears. Glad I found this thread though. Just confirmed what I thought was happening.
I have the same problem here, except it’s only plays for 6 seconds! I’ve been wondering what the h*ll happened to my WMP? Haven’t tried the solution above but I think it comes from either spb pocketplus (today plug in) or the close all utility
Thanks guys! Let’s see which one will be the solution! i'll post it latter....
I have Helmi's WM6 with Spb pocket plus, works fine for me...
Does seem to be the "Close Apps" program specifically, was outlined in Helmi's WM6 post. If you're using pocket plus, it has a built in full close application which doesn't cause a conflict with WMP.
Good luck all
i don't have that close apps program installed and my midia player tends to starts songs all skippy, like it's in fast foreward and then 5 seconds later it stops that and plays normally.
anyone else have this problem?

Have you done any registry speed tweaks? In a WM5 ROM I had it started doing that after I did some registry edits, but it played normally when I plugged in some earphones. I didn't get rid of it until I got a Crossbow ROM.
So what ever registry tweaks you've done, undo them, or just plug in some earphone and see if that works. I don't remember what reg key it was though...
yeah it stops skipping after i plug head phones in.
i'm running jwrights new wm6 rom.
i have tweaks 2K2 INSTALLED.. i'll try playing around with it..
well!, in tweaks i had low background quality of wmp on.
i turned it of, and it'll skip once when the song starts and it's fine. thats great! good enough for me, you're a good man!
WMP Skipping
I had the same problem also when i first installed the new Helmi_c 3.5 rom. But after a soft reset, the problem seems to disappear. Strange.. Will try and see whether the problem persists.
argh actually i have the same problem and even after soft resets it still persists.
i'd like it to stop but nothing i';ve tried works. it's not too bad though, i'm rarely playing music on the external speakers anyways
check the file format of your tracks
initally was experiencing the same problem of media player shutting down after a few seconds using mp4 files.. i converted my track to mp3 and it seems to of resolved the problem all tracks now playback normally
Hi all,
I had an original Desire since it came out and loved it, so I couldn't resist upgrading to the Desire S when it became available. I like most things about it, the size, the weight and shape. However there are a disappointing number of software bugs that I never experienced with my original Desire.
I know the delete by selection bug has already been documented, this is really annoying as it happens very frequently.
The fine text selection tool that is covered by your finger, I can't believe such a ridiculous problem made it into the final product.
Flash videos on BBC news website, like the streaming snooker for example, don't play, worked perfectly on the Desire but on the Desire S you get a blank white box.
Now the most annoying thing that I hope someone can help me with; I have a 32gb microsd card with about 2700 mp3s on, in the stock music application when I scroll through Albums or Tracks I am unable to fast scroll-as you start the scroll the fast scroll bar appears on the right, you drag that and it will move up and down the whole length of the screen but the letter it is on stays as '#' and the actual list of tracks/albums stays static. When you release the scroll bar the display is back at the start of the listing (if you had manually scrolled half way through the list and then tried to fast scroll, you will end up dumped back at 'A').
Just wondering if anyone knows a quick fix before I start having to shift GBs of data on and off the card, factory resets, formatting the SD card etc!
Thank you.
Well I copied everything off the SD card, formatted it in the phone and then copied the music back on. It seemed fine for a while but after a couple of hours (i.e. probably when it finished indexing 100% of the music files) it is displaying the same problem.
So it could be: invalid/problematic file names/s tripping it up, corrupt file/s, directory structure, number of files plus more.
I can't really think of anything else to try so any thoughts on this problem would be appreciated.
Cheers.
I found one other reference to this problem so far on the 'net from someone who updated their Desire HD to Gingerbread and this issue surfaced.
The problem is actually manageable, most aspects of the Music Player scroll search currently work on my phone, but the Tracks view is still prone to randomly not working as described above, or sometimes it will quick scroll but not display the quick jump letter and will scroll quickly but not jumping whole letters at time.
I'm considering rooting, even though I'd prefer to keep this device stock, simply to have the ability to tweak the background process killer in Honeycomb. I don't know if it's something Asus cranked up, but I haven't heard of anyone else with a tablet having the same problems that I do. I literally cannot listen to music (through ANY app, default Android Music or whatever, they ALL die) because at some random point, beteeen 5 and 15 minutes after I switch away from the player to do something else with my tablet, ActivityManager will kill it and respawn it. This obviously stops playback, which is annoying.
I have no task killer apps or anything like that running on the tablet. Checking logcat shows nothing leading up to the event, simply a line for ActivityManager whacking the music player PID, then restarting it. If I leave the player in the foreground, it's fine, and plays without stoppage. When I switch away from it to browse, or write this post in the XDA app (expecting music to die shortly ...) or anything, it will get killed, even though it's still playing music.
Anyone else experiencing something like this?

No, it's certainly not normal, and I suggest doing a factory reset before rooting if you want to keep it stock (even though custom ROMs do offer better overall performance). Does it happen randomly, even if you're sitting at the desktop for the 15 minutes, or does it only happen when you are switching between lots of apps, or using memory heavy apps?

The only situation which will keep the app from dying is if it's the active, foreground app. Strangely enough, the screen can sleep, as long as that music app is the one that's up when it shuts off, and it'll keep playing. I can sit at the home screen, and it will die. It will die if I switch apps, to run Talk, or the browser, or Mail, Market, anything other than Music (or any music app, I've tried them all, it's not a specific app problem.)
Checking the log via logcat shows an entry from the ActivityManager class killing the PID of the app, then immediately restarting it. If I'm watching it when it happens, the music stops, and if there's a status bar icon for the player (such as Music, WinAmp, or PowerAmp) it disappears for a moment, then reappears, on the same track, but reset to the beginning. I suspect this is because the current track is cached/saved somewhere but the position is not when the PID is killed. Oddly enough, the app must be considered to be in a "crashed" state because of the instant restart a second later.
As I said, the tablet is 100% stock. When I got it (early August, I think?) there was a single update that immediately applied. Then I got the latest 8.6.5.9 US update what, a few weeks ago? That's all that's been done as far as the code that's running on it. No root, ever, no custom ROMs, nothing.
I suppose I should do a factory reset and see if that helps. I just hate having to set everything up again without a backup (which I obviously don't have, not rooted.)
[Edit: I should add that the music player isn't the only app that ActivityManager logs kills/restarts on. logcat is full of them.]
Factory reset last night (VolDown while powering on, select "reset," so this was a full wipe) and it's STILL DOING IT.

hm strange, maybe there is an issue with your music library that crashes the music player? file corruption during transfer, maybe?
or some app your recently installed is not 100% Honeycomb compatible and makes the Activity Manager go nuts.

I've wiped and re-copied the music files several times. Also, as I said, if I keep the music app active (foreground) it plays forever, no problem.

I wiped back to stock with no apps and it still does it.
No, I actually did some more research yesterday, involving BTEP and staring at the output of "top" for an hour or two.
Warning: Linux babble ahead --
It seems that ALL the background apps will respawn at the same time. So, when Music drops and restarts, the com.google.android.music process is not the only one dying, pretty much anything running forked from zygote, except for the following exceptions: system_manager, com.android.systemui, com.nuance.xt9.input (part of the Asus keyboard,) com.android.phone (with wifi only, why is this running?) and com.google.process.apps.
You can tell when all the application PIDs are grouped tightly together, in the range of a few hundred, that some event is forcing a mass kill and refresh of the apps, except, curiously, if the app is running in the foreground. So there's at least some logic involved in whatever's doing it, and not simply a kill -HUP `pidof zygote` or something like that. (I don't even know what that would do, heh.)
While monitoring top I didn't notice any processes with extreme CPU or RAM usage. Everything looked fairly well behaved. The system had plenty of memory available at all times. I checked dmesg for any kernel errors, nothing at all to indicate a failed read/write or any other type of hardware error.
Since what I'm looking at is basically a Linux system (and I troubleshoot this sort of stuff for a living) I'm trying to dig into it from that angle first. If I can find out WHAT is causing the mass process kill, then I can hopefully have a better idea of WHY.

anyone else having issues with poweramp? works great for a couple weeks, then nothing seems to make it better. i end up flashing a different rom and the problem goes away for a couple weeks. currently running a ported rom. doesnt matter whether i'm on froyo unrooted/stock, rooted, gb port, or gb official release.. cant seem to figure this one out. i've always restored app only, never restore app data. and i have tried removing and installing a fresh version straight from the market..
when this happens it sounds like a cd skipping and the ENTIRE PHONE freezes. it can happen with the screen on while using the phone or with the screen off playing music through the headphone jack. i've tried different voltage settings and profiles, thinking that maybe im UV too much.(but the phone doesnt freeze any other time) when this happens the ONLY way to fix is to pull battery. none of the buttons work, capacitive or external, and the touch screen is completely unresponsive. this is driving me crazy. last night i tried clearing app data and it made no difference. this does not happen with ANY other apps.
ANY IDEAS?!
Did you try emailing the dev?
I've been running PowerAmp with Voodoo on Emancipation for awhile now without any problems. Have you tried any other music player to see if you get the same problem?

i have not used any other music apps, but i can tell you that this is the ONLY app that crashes the phone. the only thing i didnt like about gb custom roms was that my sms app(chomp sms) wouldn't sent messages sometimes at all, and the stock sms app was intermittent.. ported roms were better for me. and everything force closes on froyo.
Anyone else have issues where poweramp won't see the tags for several songs resulting in them not showing up whenever i go to the library? Some of the albums are missing songs and some entire albums don't show. I can see them without issue in other music players and I can see them in power amp if i browse by folder but they don't show up in library.
Never mind, found them under unknown artist and just manually changed them.
Hey guys I'm having an issue where if I play an album or playlist etc from the Play Music app it will stop playing after 2 or 3 songs, but when I look at the app it didnt switch to the next song, it just keeps the progress bar going on one song (like up to 7 or 8 mins etc on a 4 min song, and no audio obviously). It doesn't let me switch to the next song or pause or play anything, only a reboot fixes it. I am stock rooted right now, I recently did a full wipe with no restore of any backups or titantiun files, and am still having the issue. Any ideas how to fix this? My battery life has gotten much better since the recent full wipe restore, but this issue still persists (ive had it since i updated to JB and tried out a few roms (clean, executioner, jelly "beans")
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
