Where does Google Now gets its data from? - General Topics

Hi guys,
I have a question about Google Now on Android 4.1. Google Now can recommend nearby restaurants/takeaways etc but where are the details for these businesses stored? Does it pull them from Google+/Google places? If it does pull them from these places, would the business need to sign up to these places or does Google automatically add them?
I know it's a strange question but Id be grateful if you could help me out here.
Thanks

N00b, it asks Chuck Norris!
In reality, it takes reccomendations from Google+, Google Places, Google Search and from ZAGAT.

I think the buisnesses data are from Google Maps.

Google Now uses all the data Google gets from when you search. It uses location data from their Locale app, and the calendar info from your calendar.

If they have an android phone and are using latitude. You will see their position in google maps. If you want, I can show you, just PM me.

U use their gmail accout, add their email and it will send them a confirmation link and they set it up to what level of information they want to share with u. Ive noticed that other android handsets are more accurate as they are always updating, iphone bb and wm have to actually run google maps i think.

Voicemail like iphone?

New to android, and was wondering if there is an app that will do voicemail like iphone? I think evo has it.

Yeah, if I had to choose one thing I miss about my iPhone, it would be visual voicemail. Would definitely like to see a mod for it.
Google Voice
Google Voice is the best/free app that comes to my mind (works great for me), however I'm sure if you Google or just look for apps on the marketplace they shouldn't be hard to find...

Visual voicemail by Fusion
There is an app called visual voicemail. It is made by Fusion. Works great for me. I used it with Windows mobile. Had an account back then. I even get faxes to my cell number. All free when I signed up with Windows Mobile.
I don't think this belongs in the development section
this definitely belongs in general. keep the development section open for roms and fixes etc.
Anyone else think we need a q&a sections like some of the other phones?
Unfortunately for those of us that use Google Apps they left us in the dust on Google Voice.

Yes, Google Voice is pretty good. Its about as close to iphone visual voicemail as you're gonna get on the Captivate.
Plus I kind of like the transcribed voicemail emails.

Log into your google account on your computer. Find google voice on google's site. There is an option to use google voice for just voice mail. There will also be instructions for setting up your phone to forward voice mails to your google voice account. When you are all done wth that, download google voice from the market and go through its options.
I did all that and google voice works seamlessly for my voice mail.
Just open another google accountunder the same email. Problem solved

Damn. I didn't know you could do that. I started another account under a different name because the market wouldn't work with my apps name.

Problem NOT solved because it's still a different account with a new contact list.
Your google voice account does not have to be the same as your primary account. I have a google apps account that I use as my primary account for contacts, email and calendars. I have a second account that I use for the market and google voice. It works fine.

But none of your Voice stuff syncs with the main account.

Google Apps Users

If you're a Google Apps user that's been SOL on using such things as Google Voice on your Captivate...
Login to your Dashboard on your Google Apps account, and then paste this link into your browser:
https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/domain.com/GoogleAccountUpgrade
Replace domain.com with your domain.
It should launch a wizard to convert your Google Apps account to utilize such services!

There's still some services that Google hasn't converted over but alot of their "big" ones are now Google Apps compatible.

I think Google is supposed to send you an email when it is time for your upgrade. If you have a normal Google account with the same email address as the Google apps one then you must change it or they conflict after the upgrade has finished. You can request to have your Google voice information move from the old Google account (now renamed) to your converted Google apps account when finished. The only things you can't login using Google apps is buzz, youtube, and a few misc items. Beyod that syncing works as expected all around on the phone.

Google Verification Code??

What is this, I've received a text and a call with a code and have no idea if it's for the Google Search thing or not??

On your google account, there's a second layer of security. Anytime you log into your account from a device or computer other than the one recognized by google, you'll have to enter this code which is sent to the phone number listed on your google account. You can disable this by logging into your account and going to security.
I had it on my account, but I've gone through several ROMs the past couple of days and got tired of having to go through the process everytime I flashed a new ROM.
However - this is assuming you are logging into your Google account when you get these texts/calls. If not, then it could be some spammy thing or perhaps someone else is trying to log into your account from another device/computer,

Could be a scam, sure. But even if you've only used it on your phone, Google will then send the code anytime [you or someone] tries to log in with a device ID not recognized by Google. When you first logged in on your phone, do you remember selecting an option for the second layer of security? Here's a link to info on it if you want to see what it is.
As you said, it may well be junk - but it won't hurt to keep an eye on your account just to be safe.

Google Now notes location?

Just started playing with Google Now. You can say things like, "note to self, clean out refrigerator." only problem is, I don't know where these notes go! I've looked far and wide, searched google everywhere looking for this answer. Anybody know? It's probably something really easy to make me look stupid. LoL
Just tried this out...apparently it sends you an email saying what the note is
