Heylo Guys,
First post (obviously) and I'm kinda stumped.
So, I rooted my phone (Skyrocket on AT&T) with Odin and got CWR on it as well. Then I successfully flashed the Sky ICS rom and was doing all my joyful downloading and stuff of apps. I got ROM Manager and updated my CWR to Touch Recovery. Everyting was fine and dandy. I then wanted to back up everything after everything was set up and my ROM Manager froze. Sooo, I did the recovery via button holding and tried to backup; however, Touch won't backup, it just freezes. So, I started to do other things in touch... but they freeze too! In fact, it even freezes when i just try to go back to a previous menu. My phone still works... I just can't flash anything... or do anything in CWR. Anyone know what's up?

dont use buttons to navigate in cwm , dont update cwm through rom manager, but i would suggest to read my sig first

I didn't use the buttons. And I did search... I didn't really find anything that could help me... Such as hold the down button and stuff, but as it seems you know the problem maybe you could tell me what to do instead of pointing out my mistakes... Thanks.

the version of cwr that rom manager flashes is very buggy. you should flash a recovery from somewhere in the dev section. i prefer 5.5.0.4, i have never had a problem with it.

i did tell u what todo, dont update cwm through rom manager, u can just download touch cwm from this site and use regular cwm(zip file) or odin(tar file) to flash it, but i guess u did search if u didnt know that, like this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472954&highlight=touch+cwm or this, this ones a sticky http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526&highlight=touch+cwm , and i also told u to read my sig, but if its too much work let us know and we wont bother working with u

Thanks. I'll give it a try. But since I can't flash through CWR, am i going to have to do it with ROM Toolbox or something on my phone? Or like Odin?
EDIT: Obviously can't do it from phone... Haha... Odin it is.

Thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate the time out of the day to help me... I'm just new at this and wanted to make sure I didn't brick my phone with any stupid moves. I Odin-ed that new recovery and it seems to be doing great. There should be a warning for that Rom Manager CWR! xD

why do u think my sig is the way it is, ive read a few hundred posts here on the i727 forum b4 i even attempted to flash, i did not want to brick my baby.
too many users come on here read a few posts, head straight to the devs, dont understand what they are reading in the devs op, but flash anyways, then cant understand why their phones arent working when everyone else's is, and i dont think you have read it here that anyone has updated or used cwm through rom manager, unless rom developer says u can , so it begs the question, why did you?, if u followed my advice you would b sitting pretty

just to give you guys some more confidence i ran trusselo's super easy batch scritp on my dad's windows 7 box to hack 3e recovery.
you can look at my 3e thread in captivate general but do not attempt the kernel swap methods!
use trusselo's script on windows
if it fails or you are on a mac/linux machine then use the manual 3e fix after you root the device.
after i got 3e modded for self signed update.zip zip flashing like the old 2e recovery on 2.1 sgs phones i installed rom manager and chose the captivate cwm recovery. rebooted into recovery, reinstaled packages. phone rebooted, reistaled packages again and i was sucessfully in cwm. from there i was able to backup the stock rom and installed a .zip file that just changed my build.prop (taking baby steps) i could have spoofed the build.prop in many ways but it was for the sake of testing. the flash was successful. i booted up checked for the change and confirmed it was written to /system properly.
then i rebooted and restored the backup. there were some graphical errors including a broken progress bar and a splash screen that covers the menu when the restore is done so it is difficult to navigate, but it is something. success! the restored rom booted and the old build.prop was in place proving it was a successful restore.
tomorrow i will try a replaced vending.apk (market) and the build.prop as a market fix and post it in a thread if it works. if gtg465x doesnt mind i will try to build a rom off his deodexed rom if someone doesnt beat me to it.
i think we need a bounty to buy a dev phone for someone more knowledgable than me. i dont want to go all cowboy and brick this thing, the captivate had much more as far as backup plans so im being more cautious with this one. and even if i had a dev phone i wouldnt be of as much help as others around xda.

just look in the captivate general stickies. i would post a link but there is stuff in there that doesnt apply because we dont have any kernels to flash, i dont want to confuse anybody and cause bricks because someone flashes a sgs kernel. i might make new write up.

it does but there seems to be a problem. not sure why, i had no issues flashing small mods for testing but people are having trouble flashing roms. besides that the restore process seems to give me some graphical bugs but works. as far as i can tell it works like it should but i wont discredit others claiming issues mounting the sd card.

Hmm, how long is the timeframe between when CWM is updated? I'd love to get rid of all this AT&T [email protected]# they litter my phone with, but I don't want to brick it... and lots of people seem to brick phones without CWM, haha

you can use titanium backup to remove stuff. also there is odin/heimdall to flash "refuse" from h8rift. they work and are also the safety net unique to samsung phones.

OK, it goes without saying that to do rooting and flashing you need to have at least a basic understanding of the English language, a decent IQ and the ability to follow basic instructions.
However, with the CWM mod that's out there for this phone, there are dangers in trying to use for anything other than flashing. IMO, the problem is that those discussions are getting buried in long threads that were originally meant for other Subjects. I feel that CWM needs to have a thread of its on to benefit EVERYONE, especially the newbies. So I am starting it off with this simple instruction:
DO NOT TRY TO USE A ROM MANAGER AT THIS TIME! THE DEVS WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN YOU CAN USE IT
ALSO; DO NOT USE CWM TO RESTORE AT THIS TIME YOU WILL BE BRICKED
#2 IF YOU WANT TO GET INTO CWM FROM START-UP TO FLASH A ROM - HOLD DOWN THE VOL UP BUTTON + HOME BUTTON + POWER BUTTON, WHEN YOU SEE THE SAMSUNG LOGO, RELEASE THE POWER BUTTON.
TO END THE CONSTANT QUESTIONS ABOUT THE "GO BACK" MENU OPTION: SCROLL COMPLETELY THROUGH ALL MENU OPTIONS TWICE, THE GO BACK OPEN WILL THEN APPEAR
I ask the devs to post info. here even if it has been posted in one of the threads.

Restoring currently has a bug that bootloops a device.
It should be noted that currently there is no go back option either. To enable this scroll through the menu 3x and select an option, go back will now appear.

AfaIk thats correct. No one has reported a successful restore. People who have tried end up in stock recovery loop. Hopefully someone will come up with a solution for these folks soon.

Huh?? So if you try a recovery it bricks your phone???? or are you still able to get into recovery and reinstall a ROM?
If your are unable to get into recovery can you at least restore and Odin?

Not sure an odin restore is helping people.
I have a theory on a way to fix a stock recovery bootloop but that would require a bootlooped device which I'm not willing to do...

I have found pressing the vol up and vol down at the same time enables the "go back" option. It will state that it is enabled.
It will pop up when you select another option first.

On the Fascinate when you flashed CWM, Stock recovery would come up the first boot, then you would flash an update.zip that took you to CWM and you could flash a compatible kernel and you were on your way no more stock recovery. I don't know if something like this could work to get ppl unlooped or not, just throwing it out there.
And ShotgunSam you might as well add don't restore w/ CWM in your big red warning.

Well, I'm already stuck there, if your idea isn't too complex, I can try it out
I have one that was bricked for this reason. If anyone has any ideas I will test them out. I am good with adb shell and have been trying to figure out how to change the bootmode=7 which I think is the sdcard to 6 which I think is the nand. Can't find where the file is in the system because I can't boot. Or a signed update zip that boots Android of the sdcard like the hd2 might work.

Go to the epic 4g forums and in development you'll find a thread that contains an update.zip that will use cwm 3.0.2.x. adb push that update to your sd card or just transfer it. Flash jts cwm compatible kernel through odin then try applying the update.zip.
Just a theory. If cwm boots, you can then flash a rom and that may work.

Koush has been worse than useless for the Galaxy S.
Well he does have the Charge listed as a supported device on his website.. if its bricking he might help.. so if my phone were bricked I would at least try and start with him

1) I think some "bootloopers" have had success entering download mode when their SD card was pulled.
2) Have any brickers/bootloopers tried the JIG method to force download mode?

3) Also, I *think* someone who had bootloops was able to clear his data/cache folder somehow/someway. And I *think* he was either able to stop the bootloops or at least get into download mode. But maybe I am thinking of something else here.
Would empty cache/dbdata/movinand.bin files be helpful for Odin? We could rip them out of one of the Fascinate Odin packages to be included with a "Restore to stock" Odin package. Based on the error I've seen of someone that tried to restore, it looks like /data is getting FUBARd and that's causing the problem, but it's not something I want to personally test since my phone is working.
Anyone having issues after a restore, please see if you have adb shell access. If so, please grab a logcat and post it here.

did you install all the drivers for nvidia and follow the guide
yeah i did when im going to the program and click on it, it works even now, i can go to clockworkmod if i want but i cant do nothing right now, i have downloaded two roms and two stock 2.2 recovery roms and nothing one of the roms says sm5 mixmatch something like that.

What does it say on your phone
If the phone boots to anything, your not bricked.
Sounds like your trying to flash it the wrong way or something? Download the ROM you want, put it on your SD, you can mount from CWM if you cant boot past recovery.
Wipe/factory data reset
Then install from zip
Select your ROM and your on your way
Well first the S/W updating screen, then unplug the phone put the battery and reboot to CWM and when im going to do a restore/backup it always says wrong image or no image file or no file or m5 something as for now i cant do nothing to restore my phone.
I have seen where that happens at times, where you cant restore someone else's backup. If you have access to a pc, just download a new ROM. BTW, Gingerbread is far more stable on my phone then any FROYO was

not a problem. the brother above is right, it sounds like you are trying to flash the nandroid restore instead of flashing a rom. I apologize for not making more clear when I sent you the post. You can actually restore that but you dont flash from zip you go to backup/restore and choose restore for that file in that post.
1. You must have ROM Manager installed and or ClockworkMod Recovery flashed and an external sdcard installed. Then have the directory and file contents of the "LG-P999-V10f.rar" file extracted to your external SDCard in the _ExternalSD/clockworkmod/backup/ directory.
2. Run ROM Manager and choose Reboot into Recovery or boot phone into clockworkmod recovery.
3. In recovery go down to backup and restore, choose restore.
4. Select LG-P999-V10f and choose Yes - Restore.
5. When the restore finishes do not reboot yet. Do a "wipe data/factory reset" from the recovery menu.
6. When it completes choose Reboot.

Glad you got it worked out. The x-boarders stock tweaked is really nice and very stable. Its probably the best IMO. I also like the AOSP by Faux combined with his OC kernel is really nice also. There is also another I have been hearing alot about that seems to be really nice with alot of custom options and tweaks and thats called Weapon. Happy Flashing

When i go to the sounds menu on the ringtones they appear three times all the sounds, why is that??
Sounds like you have an older SD you may have used in another device? You most likely have them on your SD a few times under Audio or something IIRC

Ok so I just got me a New samsung showcase. It came with 2.2 installed build number sch-i500.ee25. Ok so i find out about rooting and all this so i start researching all about it. Here is where i am. I rooted with SuperOneClick. Worked fine. I installed ROM manager to get the clockworkmod but it did not work so I used Odin to install clockworkmod. That worked fine. So at this point I decided i need to backup the stock ROM. I try this using ROM manager but no go. it reboots into clockworkmod and gives me the sd card not mounted stuff. So I read and read and read but i can't seam to find a solution to this problem. I know there other people that have had this problem. I have read through the step by step guides and i really see nothing on this. Anyone have any type of solution.
Running on stock 2.2 rom manager doesnt work. You will need to go into cwm by turning off phone, holding power,vol up and down at same time. after samsung blinks 2nd time let go of buttons and you will boot into recovery.
Thank you. I thought I tried that before but I guess i did something wrong. Worked that time. Now if my memory is correct from reading that will not back up two things. The kernel and something else. How do I back up the kernel? Or am I just not thinking correctly cause I have not had enough sleep.

First, Welcome!
Second, Download and familiarize yourself with a program called Odin. This phone is hard to brick. From nearly every situation you can flash back to stock with Odin.

that is true. ive seen phones get restored that have been flashed with roms for other phones and wont even get past the samsung logo. he said nearly, I'm sure you can come up with some weird far out situation but don't try and scare the newbies off this early.

What will scare newbies off is when they start flashing crazy **** for another phone in the Phone box in ODIN or something and can't fix it by just ODIN'ing like you guys are suggesting.

I have the exact same phone as you. I just rooted my phone for the first time yesterday and I am having trouble installing CWM. Can you explain to me how you used Odin to flash CWM. And after you flash CWM, is it possible to revert back to stock recovery? If so how?
Could someone help me root my device..?
I tried reading around, and i think i knida know what im doing, but i really dont want to brick a 400$ tablet...
i have the b50 model on 3.0.1 and build number hri66.us_epad-8.2.3.9-20110423.
also, if i could get some help to fix the speaker imbalance, it would really really help..
With that firmware you have two choices.
The ADB method

id like to use cwm if thats possible... it's the only recovery i have any experience with..

NVFlash probably easier IMO.
CWM recovery is the only only avaiable for the TF BUT you'll have to root first than
install CWM at the same time. Once done you'll be rooted with CWM recovery.

Thanks again, but how would i go about rooting and installing cwm at the same time..?
And also, could i simply install rom manager after rooting via nvflash?
And is there anything i could do to fix the audio imbalance?
Sorry for asking so many question. its probably alot easier than i think, but i really want to know what im getting into before i root because... well $400 is alot to pay for a paper weight...

Would it kill you to actually look for the answer or must you be spoon fed everything?
i asked for help because a tablet is expensive and i didnt want to screw it up... if you didnt want to help me, you shouldnt have bothered posting.

I used the nvflash method that was nicely provided to me, and installed the prime rom. Now, can i use the cwm to flash android revolution hd? i already tried it, but it seems i loose my cwm recovery and i dont have access to my micro sd... or do i need to flash a nvflash specific rom..?

What do yo mean you loose CWM recovery? Can you boot into CWM recovery?
Try to format you micro sd card again, use sdformatter (FAT32).
Also I recommend you update your CWM to this version

How would i go about updating it...?
I installed the Prime rom via nvflash.
then booted into cwm and flashed the android revolution rom.
It booted up fine and everything, except i wasnt able to go back into my cwm recovery, and i was not able to access my sdcard. I was able to run the rom but i decided to use nvflash again to flash prime, where i have access to my sd and i can also use cwm.

Prime have the function to boot into recovery from the Power button menu which make it easy.
For any ROM which don't have the Power Button menu
-press and hold Vol down + Power button till you see a couple of lines
of wording scroll at the top left corner
-within 5 seconds push Vol up to take you into recovery.
