What happens if you get OTA on a rooted phone? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I heard the phone gets unrooted with an OTA? So what happens to the apps that need root access? They stay there and start working fine when you root again or need to be reinstalled?
Do you lose data in the process when you install OTA update on a rooted phone?

if i remember correctly , it will not have OTA with rooted phone even with stock ROM.
by root , you must have change some system file , most case, flash CWM recovery and install superuser, which will effectively fail the OTA.

You will get the ota.
it will install perfectly normal if you still have stock recovery.
if you have custom recovery manually flash the update.zip Then flash su.zip. You're now stock rooted.

I have stock recovery and I do have some third party apps installed as system apps but I havent deleted any.
I'll think unless I am one of the first to get OTA I'll prolly be too impatient to wait for it anyways and flash through CWM. But will I lose data flashing through CWM? I have flashed stock roms through stock recovery when it was allowed in GB and never lost data but I wasnt rooted back then.

Be patient, stay rooted, soon after the release I am sure there will be a stock rom that you can flash via CWM,

You won't loose data.
You can flash official updates through cwm no problem. In fact that was the only way to do it manually after 4.0.3. Stock recovery would not allow manually flashing the update zip. Would end up in a error 7.
So it was either wait for the update to be pushed to your phone or flash it manually with a custom recovery

[Q] Stock ROM on rooted device?

Is it possible to run stock rom with S-OFF, rooted device and CWR (with OTA available)?

Yes you can run stock rom with s-off and root access however I am not sure if OTA updates will still work. Even if they did work I would imagine you would lose root access once the OTA update has been applied.
So when I flash stock ruu.exe nothing happens with S-OFF neither root?
You will need the stock recovery to get OTA updates to install, they won't work with CWM
and with stock recovery I'll be able to create backups of installed roms? And how do I reinstall stock recovery?
thx
You can't backup with the stock recovery, no
Got it, thx.
And how do I install stock recovery?
Get it from an RUU, then flash it using fastboot commands
Android Recovery Manager
There is a much easier solution: Android Recovery Manager

[Q] Trying to install 4.3 OTA

My phone is rooted, and has TWRP custom recovery installed.
The phone automatically downloaded the OTA, and tried to install it. With TWRP, the update failed and my phone is working fine now.
I don't need the rooting anymore (was for teetering, but with new data plan it's now included). So I'm okay with losing the root and all.
Using SuperSU I deselected the rooting, and after reboot RootCheck tells me my phone is not rooted. I still have TWRP installed.
Now, I'm stock MF1/ 4.1.2. How do I install the 4.3 update and remove the TWRP recovery? I found in another thread the 4.3 Tar file. Do I simply use Odin on my PC and flash it on my phone? What about TWRP?

Are you sure you want the 4.3, this latest rom will lock your bootloader permanently, meaning you will NOT able to install CWM,TWRP, custom rom/kernel or downgrade the OS to the early version. The only thing you can do once updated is root. If you still decided to upgrade, just Odin the full rom MF1 here http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23134718111254196 then after bootup your OS should auto update to the latest (OTA).

I had the same question myself, and have been proverbially "running around in circles" today (instead of working). Anybody have success flashing said Odin file and then upgrading via the OTA?
Ha! I came from a mytouch3g years ago, flashing incessantly. I got this phone so i could stop. Then rooted to take the ads away, and got a bit more than I bargained for... now I just want back on OTA stock.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Cheers

if you download this full firmware http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23134718111254196 unzip the file then use Odin to flash, this will bring you back to pure stock rom with stock recovery (no more twrp/cwm). After this you will be prompt for OTA and just take the upgrade. Once done you should be on the latest factory 4.3 with locked bootloader.
I ended up downloading the 4.3 files from another post here, and flashing it with Odin. Worked fine.
Of course, without a root, can't recover my apps from Titanium but oh well.

Why don't you just root with saferoot found here?http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
I wish I would have found this thread before starting my own... woops. Anyway I would like to install 4.3 and I too rooted with twrp. I don't care anymore if I am rooted or not. I stopped flashing roms and such a while back and will be upgrading this next year to the s5 most likely.
Is there a way to install 4.3 w/out removing root? If not, since I never used odin, and used twrp what steps do/should I take to get back to where I can install 4.3?
Thank you.

Since your life is too busy and you don't want to mess with your phone anymore, your best bet is go back to stock 4.3 which is very good by the way, very stable, smooth and bug free. After so many complaints from my wife I rolled it back to stock 4.3 and she's so happy now.
1. Flash stock MF1 here http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23134718111254196 , just unzip the flash with Odin
2. Your phone should take the 4.3 OTA update and you're home free.

Return to stock only if you don't want root. If you do want root. You don't want OTA

You can have ota and root, as long as you don't have a custom recovery. once you get the update you loose root, and have to root it back. just don't install a custom recovery if you want ota updates
As for getting ota back, you will have to flash stock images. that means wiping your device..

Actually you can OTA with root AND a custom recovery. However my real point is just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD... And if that isn't clear - rooted users shouldn't rely on or think about OTAs.

If you really want to... Even though people are telling you you don't need to..
Just grab the factory images, inside update.zip there's recovery.img, flash that with fastboot.
Why do we go through this every time there is an update?

[Q] Restoring for Update

Hello. I am reverting my XT1032 to stock in preparation for the update. Does the recovery need to be resotred to stock as well or can I leave the clockworkmod recovery on?
Thanks
Yes
Stock means all is stock, even the recovery. If you leave unlocked bootloader, you can change back to cwm later.
Stock firmware
Stock recovery
No root
No system apps uninstalled or freezed
Thats what you need to succesfully OTA to Lollipop. :highfive:
Hello
I have my moto G with root and custom recovery, what are the steps to follow to get all way back to stock ?
1. Unroot.
2. Uninstall xposed if you have it
3. Flash stock recovery.
4. Make sure you have the stock ROM installed. (Unlocked bootloader is fine)
5. Initiate ota
will i be able to return to kitkat after upgrading, at any time? no bootloader conflicts, or anything?
Once you upgrade to lollipop you most likely cannot downgrade to KitKat again since the boot loader will not accept it any longer.

Regarding this guide it isn't necessary to have the rom 'unmodified' i removed a few system apps from /system. is this causing a failure as well or do i have not all XPosed removed properly ?
Thanks for reply.
Do i have any alternative option than complete reflash the stock rom ?
If you removed some system apps there is a slight chance it will fail. Also I forgot to mention to remove xposed before unrooting because uninstalling xposed requires root.
Well then I think it fails because of the removed sys apps.
Will it be a chance to flash the ota using sideload? Or will this attempt fail also?
If I don't have any option I need to start over with the device when I decide to upgrade to lollipop. But at the moment it is not yet available in Germany.
I only have a due update which might increase the SD card compatibility.

OTA Question

Unlocked U11 with unlocked bootloader, trwrp recovery and rooted stock. Have not flashed custom rom. Steps to take OTA Oreo?
Flash back to stock. Use the firmware zip it is on now to reset. You should then be able to take ota's. No need to unroot, relock etc.
Flash stock unrooted FW due twrp?
Sent from my HTC U11 using XDA Labs
Believe I have bricked my device. Flashed RUU using appropriate RUU exe from HTC. Intaller ran for @1hour with 0% process. Battery was at 93% and ran to under 30% halting process. Had to disconnect to recharge. Will call HTC to see if they can help.
Update- All cool. Battery died, charged phone boots up fine. Still on stock. Need to restore stock recovery.

If I'm not mistaken, flashing back to stock with the ruu will in affect unroot your phone. You'd still have twrp and an unlocked bootloader, but you'd have to install SuperUser or Magisk again.
Am I correct?

Flashing back to stock with the ruu will replace TWRP with stock recovery, thus making it able to take OTA.
If it's rooted or TWRP installed, it will stall at beginning of OTA process .

What if you just remove twrp and go back to the stock recovery? Would it then break root?

You could remove root of SuperSU or Magisk and then flash stock recovery over TWRP.
Haven't tried that and not sure if it would work. A rooted phone won't take OTA.
Would save restore chores if you could.

only way to take OTA is go back to stock rom by using RUU (will lost data, back to stock recovery, unroot already).
On rooted stock rom, i tried unroot and flash stock recovery by ADB but it still cant install OTA update
Flashing back to stock will unroot and flash stock recovery. If you dont do it that way you cannot update ota as the signature of the firmware is broken. You have to 're-sign' the firmware by flashing it again.
Flashing stock firmware will NOT relock or lock the bootloader. It will NOT s-on. If your bootloader is unlocked and/or s-off do not change them as there is no need.
3 essentials for the m9 are:
Stock firmware ruu.zip
S-off
Charger cable.
